Review from P G.
Vancouver, BC
Not great but decent for kamloops. Went with their abc menu:
Tofu was good
Tempura had too much batter
Hand maki (roll) was good
Noodle in what should have been a light vinegar sauce was horrible.
I've been several times and the tuna/salmon is a solid choice for sashimi, the rolls are fine as well. Avoid the set menu or boxes. -
Review from Alfonso L.
There really is no excuse for slow service, especially when the restaurant is not all that busy. Sanbiki's, with its new location downtown, was modestly full with customers but they either had one server or one cook. Nothing could possibly explain why it took a mind-boggling 55 minutes to receive our food from the time we ordered our lunch bento boxes. Yes. 55 minutes. How did we know this? Because of the parking meter across the street.
Was it all worth it? I don't think so. The three of us ordered the lunch bento boxes, not all that expensive at $10-12. Mine was chicken, the others were the sashimi. I also ordered the appetizer of bird's nest tempura, which at $5.95 was a bit of a disappointment since it was essentially a clumpy mix of onions and carrots deep-fried and almost "bloomin' onion" in their appearance. Except that these were rather flavorless. Served with a non-descript and clear dipping liquid (mirin? rice vinegar?), it was not a hit. As one of the cheapest of the appetizers, we decided to try it.
I wish I could tell you we liked our bento boxes, but I suspect the long wait --without any kind of explanation or any ambling over by the emotionless server to us, the last table in the patio next to Mori Mori. And when the food came --ONE at a time!--we were not just famished but more than impatient. My chicken teriyaki consisted of lumpy, flavorless turds of chicken-product with some sauteed onions. The rice was fine, but I wanted to know what the "salad" was, since it looked minced and mixed with some bean sprouts and sliced carrots. I didn't notice any kind of miso dressing on the salad, which is standard. The California-like rolls were on the puny side. And that was it. I don't think the sashimi my friends scarfed up was all that memorable.
I wish I could say that this was a decent meal but I just could not excuse the impossibly slow service for lunch. This is not a huge metropolitan city. This is a place where there are not that many Japanese spots. (Ironically we avoided Arigato because we thought this place was faster.) Oh well ---let the server with the colored reddish blond hair who could not be bothered to tell us why our order took so long continue to make diners wait for mediocre food.
