I was out and about in Kensington Market on Sunday to pick up a bunch of different items for Mother's Day dinner.
Stepped into Sanagan's on a whim and picked up the some of the biggest, juiciest and appropriately spiced pork sausages. Fair price point and great customer service--these guys know their meat. -

Now THIS is a place to buy meat in Kensington Market! True old world quality and flavour AND modernist ethical sourcing sensibilities make this one of the absolute best meateries in the GTA.
Anything pork here is automatic nominee for best in the city - chops are as good as they get and the sausages are beautifully balanced spice wise with amazing texture and snap (yes, the good ones snap...) The poultry is really great as well although nobody touches Gasparro's when it comes to bird. The beef was a bit more of a mixed bag for me. The more flavourful cheaper cuts are exceptional when cooked slowly and carefully, yet the high end steaks were just not that exceptional. Good yes, but not quite worth the price for me. Haven't had any lamb yet but I am looking forward to giving it a try.
Now let's talk about the name;
"Meat Locker?" What marketing genius decided to call one of the most aesthetically pleasing arrangements of carved carcasses "Meat Locker"? Why, if they called it La Galerie des Beaux-Viande they could raise the prices by 50 percent - uh- Yeah......Meat Locker...kind of grows on you...hey...I like that...Meat Locker.
Great name!
Sanagan's is definitely worth a visit.Listed in: Meet the Meat

They know their stuff. If you appreciate good meat, know what it tastes like and want something that is of good quality, then come here.
It WILL be pricier than your regular grocery store, but it is oh-so-worth it.
The pork chops made me a lover of them. When I ate pork chops before, they were dry, tasteless and made me think of sawdust.
These pork chops? Amazing. Cooked to perfection in a skillet, they were juicy, not at all dry and AMAZING.
We went back to try the steaks, and were disappointed.
They were only 10% better than the grocery store selection, but at double or triple the price. Not worth it in my opinion.
The best beef in Canada still only comes from Alberta, and the beef in France is of a quality far beyond Albertan beef. Sorry, but it's true.
I have yet to try their lovely chickens, ducks and even that boar (nom nom), but the pork chops have made me a believer. -

Sanagan's is perfect. I love Sanagan's.
The staff is totally helpful, very nice, and, yes, dreamy. But, equally as important: their meat is amazing. Seriously I am now just mad at everyone who has ever sold me a sausage before. The sausages from Sanagan's actually taste like delicious meat, not meat product. They are also happy to order pretty much anything for you.
Aesthetically, this is maybe the most beautiful butcher's shop in the world. Gorgeous butcher block, such good-looking meat, and awesome cookbooks. I love this place. I love eating meat, but I might love shopping for meat at Sanagan's even more. It makes me feel like I'm in a small town where people care about customers and farmers. Or, you know, a city where awesome things happen and great shops can thrive.
My only request is that they start doing demos in the store, but they kind of already have since people tend to congregate outside the window most days. Sanagan's is a perfect addition to the market. -

Ok, I KNOW this doesn't make sense, but I'll say it anyway: I don't eat cow or pig (or various 4-legged animals).. but I've been VERY excited to check out Sanagan's.
Why? Oh, I'll tell you. After watching Food Inc. and reading The Omnivore's Dilemma, I have a plethora of opinions about meat and what I do/don't want to eat (but as for you? Do your own thing, baby). I've even considered the idea of occasional red meat in my life again - as long as it comes from a place like Sanagan's.
Foxy Butcher (that's the gossip) Pete sources all of his meaty-ness from local farms - if you want sustainable steakums, you can find it here. If you want grass-fed, he'll have some. If you want to know WHAT FARM Bessy came from, he'll know. Gall heck, I subscribe to his Twitter and occasionally he'll be like, "Just got a big 'ol pig from Uncle Buck's Farm! Come 'n git it!"
I stopped by today cause the aforementioned Twitter account shouted out some organic chickens. I ended up getting another local chook instead ($4 cheaper per pound!), which was only $9 - supermarket price!
Love the vibe - feels very vintage meat locker, with amazing wooden tables, a big meat saw right out in the open and of course, lots of meaty pickins. Go get some! -

I feel like I am going back in time when I walk into Sanagan's. The strangely familiar smell, the sawdust on the floor and actual animals in the display cases are rarely seen anymore in today's plastic wrapped meat-counters.
I love the attention I get when I visit them, and have ben happy with the product so far. -

There is something very old world about Max and Son meat market and it's very comforting. It is a tiny butcher shop and while their selection is limited their customer service is excellent. The counter help knows their meat and will be happy to help you for all your meat needs. They will give you custom cuts if you request them which can be very helpful if you are making a particular dish. Max and Son Meat Market is not the biggest or even the best butcher shop in Kensington Market, but it is a very nice market and is worth stopping in to feel how a butcher's shop used feel.

If you can't get to a farmers market, go to Sanagan's. They have a good selection of interesting types of meat and cuts that you won't see other places. The guys that run the shop are really friendly and willing to chat about what you should do with your amazing piece of meat. Great store, wholeheartedly recommend.

This is where I stop for meat now.
I do a run through Kensington when I'm buying groceries and this is one of the stops. The staff know what they're talking about. Beyond knowing the cuts of meat, they are usually helpful in telling you how you can cook it up.
The meat is from local farms and is fresh. I continue to go back with great results. The prices are very good as well. -

I just started eating meat again and want to be mindful of where what I do eat comes from.
I went in today, got two small-ish sirloin steaks for little over $6. Cooked one up and it was deelish.
These guys are friendly and knowledgeable. I'm a new fan. -
