San Remo just went under a recent reno. It was my first time there in some time as I live in Vancouver, but I used to live in Victoria and remember when it was first opened over 25 years ago. It still has the same owners and teh same great atmosphere and food. Victoria is so blessed as there are still some original independent restaurants like Pags, John's Place, Millos, Passeros, Blue Fox, Romeos. People just don't realize how hard or rare that is. It's easy to be a critic and everyone thinks they are, and take cheap shots for whatever reason. I love Greek food and it is heavy and seasoned and they flambe cheese. Not the greatest diet, but damn it, when I feel like, it I want it, just the way it is. Victoria should support these hometown favorites or go eat at chain restaurants and ask for the owner when you have a complaint! Good Luck!

San Remo is a Greek and Italian restaurant located in Quadra Village, on Quadra, a door or two North of Hillside. The name may be Italian, but in my experience, San Remo does Greek better than Italian.
The atmosphere is lovely. Whitewashed walls, high ceilings, a lot of light and windows, and Greek and Italian art and knicknacks everywhere, as well as a lot of plants. It's clean, and comfortable, and I for one always feel at home there.
The staff are always very friendly, prompt and helpful, and quick to joke around and chat (when it's not too busy of course), and are great with answering questions about wines, regional ingredients etcetera.
The price isn't bad, but I do think it's a touch on the expensive side for what it is, which brings us to the food.
The food is good. I get there hungry, I leave full, usually with leftovers. The quality of food, and cooking, however, has definitely gone downhill over the past 10 years or so. It seems everything is a bit overcooked and a bit oversalted these days, and doesn't taste as fresh, as exciting, as well cared-for as it used to.
That said, I never have a bad experience. This is somewhere I go when I don't want to wait, don't want to dress up, don't want to majorly impress my date, and don't want to cook. It's good, solid, decent fare, and I doubt you'll be disappointed - just don't expect anything fancy or to write home about.
It is, however, worth going for the Ouzo candies alone. I could LIVE on those licoricey little gems.

Let's start out on a positive note!!! The waitresses were great and very attentive. I knew eating at San Remo's would be a disaster when my Greek salad was not so Greek. Mr. Cook what happen to the olive oil, vinegar, salt, lemon juice ?????San Remo should not serve pizza at all, it was disgusting. I guess being from Chicago I can be slightly judgemental. My 5 yr old son would eat basically any pizza, he wouldnt touch San Remo's pizza, it literally fell apart when picking it up. Note to the cook: Don't drench the crust with olive oil. My mother-in-law ask for her lemon chicken to be well done, San Remo's did the opposite, it was medium rare. My calamari was stuck together in clumps. I will never go back again. Again, the staff was GREAT!!! I came for food and left disappointed .....
