I'm so totally for (ok, poor expression, but forgive me) artist co-ops, and moderately-priced galleries, and all that.  I love art, I'd love to buy art, and I'd love to do it more often if it were within my budget.  At this place, you can defintiely find some nice and interesting art, with a rather quick turnover rate, I would assume, since different people seem to be exhibiting all the time and things are getting sold, or finished and hung...  Someone who works there told me that there are over 100 students for each session, and I think that's great.  The more art for kids, the better.

There were some beautiful things that were very reasonably priced, there were some not-so-beautiful things (in my opinion) or things that were overpriced, and everything in between.

I'd love to stop by on my next visit to San Diego.

This place has plenty of experienced, patient, and knowledgeable teachers that are willing to guide you but allow you to be yourself in your art. The atmosphere is relaxed and homey. The owner and workers are also very mellow and genuinely nice. This is a great place to just stop by and hang out for a little while.

The only downside is that due to the downfall of the economy, they had to cancel a few classes and raise the prices... but other than that, the service and environment has never changed.

All of the instructors I've had here are top-notch.  Misty Hawkins' Beginning Drawing class was relaxed and very good (she's awesome!).  I wish they offered more classes.  I also wish that, when they have to cancel a class, they could give more than 48 hours notice, and not mess up my phone number when they call and let me know.  I really wanted to take the Intermediate Drawing class, but they had to cancel, and somehow, I never got the message that class was canceled (which was an honest mistake, but annoying for me).  Aside from that glitch, though, I've had nothing but good experiences with them.  Parking in the area can be hard, though.

As its name implies, this spot encompasses many services: workshops, studio space, adult and youth classes, and art supply.  They also have a gallery space which they use to showcase some of their students' artworks.  The hyperbole for this place has to go to their affordability, i.e., their Painting Explorations class will only cost you $150 for a total of 15 hours.

History

Established in 2003

The San Diego Art Department (SDAD) is the heart child of George Lofland, whose vision of a dynamic atmosphere brimming with creative play came to fruition in July of 2003. In January of 2007, SDAD merged with The San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) a nonprofit art organization that also manages the Museum of the Living Artist in Balboa Park and the Combined Organizations for the Visual Arts. With a shared vision to increase the visibility of the visual arts, supporting the artists of Southern California, providing high quality art programs and community outreach, this is an exciting new chapter for both SDAD and SDAI.
