Really good friendly service. Close to hotels, an affordable choice for very fresh take out with generous portions.

We wanted a meal on the quick so we stepped into Sam's Deli. I had a very good pastrami sandwich, stacked high. It was fresh and the clam chowder was hot.
That was all I wanted and Sam's delivered. -

Really good sandwiches. I had Victoria smocked meat, which is brisket. Yummy. Really good clam chowder - I mean really good.

We rolled in on Saturday Feb 25. She had the caramel macchiato and I had the mocha. The coffee's were beyond gross. As in horribly disgusting. We paid $7 for two specialty coffee's made up of HOT WATER, SYRUP, and FLAVORING. Last time I checked these drinks are supposed to be made from steamed milk, not water.

I was looking for a quick "togo" meal in downtown Victoria in the touristy area and ended up at Sam's Deli.

The staff were patient with me as I decided what I wanted and were very helpful in getting me in and out in a timely manor.
I really enjoyed my Montreal Smoked Beef sandwich. It was full of flavour and everything was fresh.
I'll go back. -

In the tourist trap area of Victoria, I found it extremely difficult to find a decent place to eat. It seems that all of the locations were targeting the cruise crowd or just had average menus with ridiculous prices. After wondering around for what seemed like FOREVER, I settled on Sam's located very close to that big ass hotel that I forget the name of.
The deli was staffed by local high schoolers seeking that summer job, which was obviously by the lack of maturity and professionalism they showed behind the counter. But, it's a deli, so you shouldn't expect 5 star service. The sandwich I ordered was HUGE and also came with a nice cold beer, which I thought was a nice touch to blur my vision just a bit so I didn't have to see another American with their "I Love NASCAR" t-shirts.
I do agree with one of the previous reviewers that the prices are high, but that should be expected when you are on an island with the senior citizen cruise bregade being your leading customer. Sam's will do in a pinch, as evidenced by my visit. Think Panera Bread and you'll know how Sam's is. -

Over-priced sandwiches that anyone could make at home? Not what I'd call a great restaurant. Seriously, store-bought sliced bread with the most basic of toppings....not going back.

While in town for business (by myself) it was the perfect place to pick up something quick I could take back to my hotel. Simple and friendly!

FOUR for SAM's, fellow yelpers.
If I was a Victoria resident, I would frequent Sam's often. But we did include Sam's for order-and-go purposes before boarding the Victoria-Pt. Angeles ferry last week.
We stopped by The Deli the day before to scope things out and get a sense of how busy they were, how attentive was the staff, cleanliness, etc. (To be honest - I questioned some of the prior yelps; I wanted my own eyes to see just what's what).
The morning of our ferry departure, I called Sam's just after 7:30 am. The ability to order each item, with preciseness went VERY well. We were asked the time we would like the pickup and they assured us our sandwich orders and bagels would be ready. Nicely wrapped and inclusive of garnishments and utensils, we were set. The Chicken Club was delightful as well as the Seafood club: more food than either of us could eat on our 1.5 hour cruise to Washington State.
I was impressed with the courtesies of the staff (!) and the presentation of our food (!).
Thank you SAM! Thank you Victoria, BC. -

Price for 2 sandwiches, 2 sodas, 2 potato chips - $24 (cdn)
A little overpriced but it was tasty. I ordered the turkey blt and I had a bunch of turkey on my sandwich. This lunch definitely left me full until dinner time. -

Come for the sandwiches, stay for the soups.
Came by here for lunch and had the shrimp and avocado sandwich plus a bowl of corn chowder. The sandwich was good but not anything special - you wouldn't be upset about eating it but wouldn't write home about it either. The chowder, however, was excellent - lots of sweet corn and a nice dark flavour to it. I thought there was a bit much red pepper in the chowder but I'm not much of a fan of red pepper anyways so you may not mind. I'd only ask that there was more of a bacon-y flavour to it, I like my corn chowder a touch smoky.
All in all, a nice place to stop by for a meal that is relatively healthy and reasonably priced. -

In the heart of Victoria BC Canada, Sam's Deli is just a good place to stop and have a beer and sandwich and people watch.
It's just a sandwich, soup, salad and beer joint, but it's across the street from the Empress Fairmont hotel, and the Inner Harbor seawall.
We had sandwiches and beer, but our main purpose was to get lunch for the next day's fishing trip.
I booked our charter with Adam's Fishing Charters, which left the dock @ 7:00am, so we had to get a party platter for our lunch the night before. The party platter was $42.00 CAD and was equal to 5 sandwiches. So if you're a group, order a party platter. -

Came here twice during our visit to BC. I can see why it's a local favorite lunch spot. Sandwiches are good, not great. Bread is fresh, as is the shrimp and avocado. Good selection and the corn chowder was great. I agree it's a bit pricey for an ordinary sandwich but not for BC where you seem to get over charged for everything. Very fast NY style, order at the counter. Know what you want or you may get dirty looks from locals in a hurry. I would come back, especially if looking for something simple and fast in a city abundant with sit down restaurants

We stopped here out of curiousity about the long lines we'd seen while out walking for the prior two days, and at first I figured it must be the location that keeps this deli hopping. Rarely, however, have I felt so much pity for any population as I did for the residents of Victoria, after I tasted my sandwich and then saw the "second best sandwich in Victoria" sign at the counter.
I came here fairly hungry and ordered the vegetarian sandwich on multigrain bread. The bread was just regular loaf, the ingredients basically hamburger condiments without the burger, the cheese oily and rubbery, and my request for "mustard, no mayo" was translated to mean mayo without mustard. The avocado add-on consisted of half an avocado mashed onto the top slice of bread with enough vigour to tear several gaps into the bread; the sandwich then fell apart while I was trying to eat it. I was done with my meal at that point and went to eat something else after.
This deli is basically Subway on sliced bread instead of loaves, and I'm not a fan of Subway either. I wouldn't recommend these sandwiches to anyone unless they were on a special doctor-prescribed "bland food only" diet. -

oooo i love sams deli! we've been going here for eons and it's a must when visiting victoria. sure, it's a little pricey for a sandwich but what you're getting is a mega pile of meat. as in 'you can't fit your mouth around your sandwich as there are so many fillings and you need a fork to scoop everything up at the end' mega pile. i love their roast beef and shrimpy sandwiches. fab-u-lous.
plus their corn chowder is always piping hot and delicious and their baked goods look tempting as you custom make your sandwich. the little patio is sweet in the summer and provides some good tourist watching. inside has comfy booths and the staff has always been very pleasant. -

Great little place. Try the BLT Bagel for breakfast!
