Average food.  Average service.  Average drinks.

I ordered a beer once and it was sour.  They had to take it back and change the barrel.  The only item I've ever eaten here that was slightly above the norm was the jamalaya.

    Nothing spectacular.

I consider Sammy J to be a notch below other franchaises like Earls, Cactus Club, and Milestones. The food is mediocre at best and I would choose to go down the block to Cactus Club. I'm not sure why they name the restaurant Sammy J Peppers since they don't really have anymore spicy dishes then other similar franchaises.

This place is always empty, does anyone actually eat here? You may have to wait a while at the entrance before anyone notice. I had the Jambalaya bowl and you get to choose how spicy by the number of peppers. It was average, Milestones version is much better in taste and flavour. Ill come back here if the wait is too long at Cactus.

Atmosphere: Looks like you standard box chain restaurant trying to be hip for game night, nothing special. I've been here a few times, sadly, not by choice, however, for ladies night since it is central to most of us, however, would rather have gone to a nice bar instead. There are so many nicer places to go in the hood and I will make it my mission to find it.

Service: The service was terrible to be honest. Our waitress was as dumb as a doorknob, unfriendly, came across as a bitch and just really didn't give a shit about her job. I asked her if she could cut my dessert into 4 pieces so that we can share it as an appie and she looked at me as though it was rocket science. I had to explain this to her at least 3 times. She was blond, bottle blond, therefore, expected at least some marbles upstairs. When we were ordering, she didn't understand appies from our mains. The only saving grace and not enough to warrant a high rating for this establishment was the manager brought us all free shooters since we were 5 hot girls and probably the only hot girls that ever walked into the establishment in a week.

Food: I kept starring at the menu for 20 minutes 'cause there was nothing that I could eat that was compromising on diet let alone taste. I settled for a Caesar salad as a main since it was safer. The bread sticks appie was overly salted and the marinara sauce tasted sour and stale. They literally used stale tomatoes. I didn't want to say anything to the other girls, however, since no one was really dipping, it wasn't a big deal. The chicken fingers were too salty and dry. The dessert advertised as a warm tortilla filled with apple pie filling and then deep fried was basically just apple pie "rolls". There was no fuckin Tortilla. Since a tortilla recipe is almost the same as a pie crust recipe, they might as well have called the menu item "apple pie".

Price: Average price, however, for the same price, I have had way better pub food.

Next time ladies, if we have to eat before our evening activities, this foodie is picking the place.

I didn't realize how much I love the patio at the Sammy J Peppers on Granville Island, until I came here.  I really love that patio.  Sipping on a Patron margarita looking out onto Burnaby traffic is just not the same as looking out at the water and boats.

However, this location is conveniently located near Metrotown.  So a large group of us went to grab a drink after seeing a movie.  The host, who also became our waiter, was a good humored guy, quick with a joke.  Service was overall timely considering the size of our group.

Let's cut to the chase shall we?

Walked into the restaurant at around 7:45ish pm, no hostess, not a soul in sight, except for a dinner party of about 15 in the far corner. It took more than 5 minutes of standing at the doorway before the hostess decided to come out of the kitchen (from what I do not know), and offers my party of 3 a booth that is at the end of a line of booths, with no overhead light -- so dim that I think that I'm even surprised anyone could expect us to read the menu nor see what we were consuming.

The hostess was unfriendly and didn't seem to want to be working. After my whole party stood up to get some attention in relocating to another table, it took us at least another 15 minutes to order. Mind you, it is definitely NOT because we couldn't make up our minds on what to eat. Believe me, we were all really hungry!

My chicken pesto penne (changed to linguine) was mediocre. The pesto sauce was a bit runny. Not impressive for the $14.99 I had to pay for it.

It was next to impossible to get any attention from the servers, because NONE of them passed by our table between the ordering of drinks, ordering of food, and serving the food.

Comparing with its competitors and other Sammy J Peppers locations, I'd say this one has the worse level of service. Ever.

Also, another note...this other time I went here with a friend, the server suggested us Sammy J Peppers' signature appetizer (I think it's called Blackened Chicken strips or something). Not a good idea, because boy was the chicken black. In fact, I don't think it was chicken anymore, I think it became carbon. Completely encrusted with spices and completely dry.

Not so good food, medium prices. Not a good idea at all!

Went in during lunch with a friend, expecting it to be busy and a little crazy. We were sat immediately, which was the only thing that happened in a timely manner the entire time we were there.

We took a little while to order since we weren't familiar with the menu - maybe ten minutes or so until we knew what we wanted. I wonder if this annoyed our waitress. Ordered a steak appetizer with red peppers, and then for lunch I had a cup of soup and my friend had a sandwich.

Waited about 45 minutes for our appetizer and then our food another 10 minutes after that, but kind of expected it since there were at least two large parties of 10 or more in the establishment. We were next to the kitchen where we were able to watch the cooks get slammed like a wicker hut broadsided by a truck in a hurricane. The cooks themselves held up as well as they could, and for that I have much respect and hope that they each had a stiff drink after their shift was over. The food was delicious and satisfying.

The server herself was pretty dissapointing. I don't think she ever smiled, even when she came by after about 45 minutes with a couple of free appetizer coupons. I told her not to worry, it was a lunch rush and just kind of laughed it off. She didn't respond to what I'd said and handed the coupons to my male lunch partner without really missing a beat in her deadpan obligatory spiel, then walked away.

The restaurant cleared out, we finished eating, and then waited for the check that someone else got for us. We placed a credit card in the check presenter and waited for her to return. And waited. And waited, and waited. The people in the booths to either side of us were also popping their heads up and craning their necks looking for our waitress. Two of the guys to our right gave up waiting and even tried to leave before their food arrived, but one of their friends convinced them to stay and put up with our absentee waitress.

After 20 minutes of staring at our neglected credit card in the card holder, we gave up and left cash on the table with only a mere 10% tip. It's the lowest tip I've ever given anyone. As we were walking out, we saw our attractive waitress, about 5'-7" with medium-length dark, wavy hair hanging out at the bar chatting with the hostess. I was looking at her the whole time we were leaving and she didn't or wouldn't notice me.

Easily some of the worst service I've experienced in quite a while. We were willing to wait patiently, but the aloof, just-shy-of-rude treatment we got from our waitress really soured an otherwise decent meal in an stylishly designed restaurant.

If you must eat here, avoid that waitress. I really wish we'd gotten her name so that you can ask for someone else if you actually decide to eat here and don't mind slow service.

hadn't been to sammy j's in a while.. then they started winning me back over the past year.. and then last nite had a really bad experience so it all averages out to about 3 stars

food is not bad surprisingly.. they have quite a few spicy and cajun options.. my favourite dish for the past while has been the new orleans skillet.. which is a combo of seafood and steak and veggies over a bed of mashed potatoes with some cajun sauce, served on a sizzling skillet

last sunday nite we went in before wanting to catch a movie.. they took their sweet ass time seating us.. then took their sweet ass time taking our order.. the place was not busy at all.. then they took FOREVER to bring out the food.. the wings were cold so not that good.. my friend got the seafood chowder which was ok.. couldn't really find much seafood in it.. the new orleans skillet was good as usual..

i even asked 'is the kitchen backed up?' cuz no apology was offered on their behalf and a simple explanation of why the food took so long woulda been nice.. then they didn't check up on us for drink refills for like 20-30 minutes.. then after that no one in sight to give us the bill for another 30 minutes after that.. had to flag a different waitress down

the servers when they did serve us were nice enough.. just the service itself was down right crappy and slooooooooooooooow.. if we had been in a bit of a rush or more eagerly hungry we woulda been pissed but at least we could spare some time.. cuz a 45-60 minute meal took almost 2 hours just cuz they were taking forever.. i still don't get why??!  we didn't order dessert on purpose from there cuz i just couldn't stand having to wait any longer.

might have just been an off nite for them and i will eventually give them another try..

PS some of their appies are good too like the steak bites.
