Review from Kevin G.
Vancouver, BC
We stayed here for about 4 weeks in October and November 2011 to get started in Vancouver for a 6 month Working Holiday trip.
We are very satisfied with this Hostel after we made some other experiences in Vancouver.
The staff is great, fun and always helpful. You need an access code to get into the hostel. The rooms are typical Hostel with lockers and so on. We have been to a 6 bed dorm and for one week in a private. The private was with a private bathroom. Everything was clean and comfy.
If you have a room facing to Granville it can be a bit louder, especially on the weekends because the party is right in front of your windows.
Breakfast is included and with Bagels, Toast, Jam, Coffee and Juice very good.
For a few bugs more you can have a warm breakfast but I didn't really try it.
The Hostel also has a Pub (The Beaver) which is perfect to grab some cheap beer and make international contacts with other people from the hostel.
The kitchen is well equipped and often you find little treasures in the free food area.
Pans and Pots need to be fetched at the reception so they try to keep an eye on it.
Directly on Granville the Hostel has the best location in the city.
More central is not possible.
By the way: The also have a weekly rate.Comment from Pete E. of Samesun Backpacker Lodges Vancouver 5/10/2012

This review is for 12/31/2011 to 01/03/2012. With my last minute trip to Vancouver swinging into full motion, I had no place to stay. I could check into a nice hotel or find a buddy to stay with. However, I did find a hostel, but it wasn't any ordinary hostel. This hostel had class and that fit up my alley. Vancouver is home to the SameSun Backpacker Lodge.
I am not too familiar with hostels since there is not that many in the United States or perhaps I am really closed off to the world. I booked my hostel online and had no idea where I was staying. First impression was that I was staying in some ghetto building in New York with random sick people, but I forgot that Vancouver is much classier than that. For about $20 a night, you can have a place to sleep, shower, and have free breakfast. Are there any downsides? Nope. Not even with sharing the room. I had three other roommates and they were wonderful. With only a short stay, I didn't get to know them well, but I did get to informally meet with them. Meeting new friends in a town you've never been in plays a big role.
The building is secure with a password that rotates. Make sure you find out with the front desk. Every room has their own design and I got the French Flag Door for Room 211. I am not sure if there are "WASHROOMS" on every floor. The washrooms or restrooms, as a Yankee would say, has three shower stalls, two toilets. There is free Wi-Fi in the building for us members who want to be in contact with home without buying a cellphone plan in another country.
As I mentioned before, there is free breakfast at the Beaver inside the hostel. There is a kitchen and recreational room for those who want to stay indoors if its pouring outside or just lazy to leave. Basically, think of SameSun as a dormitory with class. After breakfast is over, the Beaver operates into a restaurant and dining hall. If you don't plan to stay at the hostel during most of your stay, the location of where your hostel is pretty cool. It is in the middle of downtown where all the clubs and bars are at. There are tons of places to shop, dine, and have fun. Just seconds away from fun.
Before you leave, make sure you grab your linens since all they ask you to do is turn them in. Ugh....I miss this place already. As I was leaving the Tuesday morning, I got to meet the guys who made the video. If you haven't seen it, here is the link: http://youtu.be/CbtQz9... . Just don't watch the movie, Hostel. Its not the same thing..lol.

It's been several years since I stayed here, when my sister and I first moved to Vancouver. We stayed at the hostel for about two weeks while we looked for our own apartment.
I have to say we had a decent time, the location was great and the hostel was fairly clean. It was a sociable place and we met many, many people from all over the world. Be warned it's a party hostel, so a quiet night is not what you'll get. At first my sister and I were worried about safety since the hostel is near several porn stores. The neighbourhood tho wasn't an issue and we were fine walking around very late at night. For what you pay it's not luxury but it'll do just fine. -

The owner commented that their private rooms are "only" around $70-80 which is still pretty steep, the price that I stated in my review was quoted to me on your website, so we ended up going with the 4 girl dorm. Maybe it was a website glitch, but this prevented us from renting a private room.

Vancouver, BC
This place has a really fun down-to-earth feel. Staff are very friendly and helpful. And the free breakfast (toast and jelly/jam) is a bonus - or for $2 get a hot breakfast. Plus free wifi is great. And the pizza shop next door is super convienient :)
But like most hostels, it didn't really feel that clean, and was noisy at times (from party goers coming in).
We had a private room and bathroom which made it much more bareable.
If you are straight and looking to party then this is the place for you.
If you are gay, try a hostel on davie street.
If you are looking for a good nights sleep, or a longer stay, find a hotel.
Also be warned that there is NO air conditioning (well, when we stayed - Fall 2009) and it is an old building with poor circulation so I would imagine in summer it could get quite hot sleeping. Plus sleeping with the window open is very noisy from traffic and outdoor noises. -

I recently stayed for three nights with some friends while travelling. We were there mid-week so it we found it fairly quiet, and our room and the washrooms were clean. It is a great location for sight-seeing Vancouver; it's easy enough to walk to most places or catch a bus to the further communities. The common areas are large and we met some great people there. The only thing that I really didn't like were the beds - my mattress was basically springs with a sheet overtop, and whenever the top bunkmate moved the whole bed shook.
The Beaver (restaurant/lounge) had decent food at a great price. Drink prices were on the average side, but there is a nightly special. Free breakfast was toast, bagels, and fruit; not much but enough to get you through till lunch.
I would stay here again if returning to Vancouver and I would recommend it to others looking for a cheap place to sleep in downtown Vancouver. -
Review from Emily D.
Just like any other hostel... it's loud (til 5AM club loud), great place to meet locals and people from all over, clean enough and has lots of flair and personality.
Best pro is that they have their own bar - the Beaver with good cheap Canadian beer.
Only real downside is how expensive it is! I think it was roughly $20CAD each night.
If this is your first time hostelling, it might be rough! -
Review from Alex H.
This is a great backpacker hostel. It's centrally located, making many of the city's attractions not much more than a 15 or 20 minute walk away. The atmosphere is defanately that of a capitol city backpacker hostel; travelers coming and going to the downstairs pub and the bars a short walk away. Me and my female friends all felt that it was quite a safe hostel, with several security doors and 24 hour staffing, and free security lockers for your backpack. Like many backpacker hostels, it's the crowd that really makes this place shine--my dorm-mates were loads of fun every time I've visited!
All in all, not the best place to go if you're looking for a serene night's sleep (Try the Hosteling International across the street), but the best backpacker destination in town. -
Review from J B.
Great Location. Great way to meet international travelers. Has a bar downstairs in it. Not as clean as I was hoping, but I guess thats part of staying in a hostel and saving the money. Definitely worth its value.

Review from Trina M.
This is located in the Entertainment District. For all you female travelers, this means it is next door to several 25-cent peep shows. The street was literally shut down so hundreds of people, mostly in go-go boots and hot pants, could loudly roam outside. Staff was unhelpful upon arrival-wouldn't show us the room unless we paid (we felt uncomfortable, given the location) & they didn't know where parking was (FYI, officially located at a hotel a few blocks away. Be prepared to spend $15/day extra on parking and carry your luggage thru a crowd of go-go boots!). 1 of 3 toilets worked in the ladies restroom. The showers smelled strongly of mildew & were covered in hair. It was loud until 4am- w/earplugs! If you are looking for a place in a safe area to sleep and be able to get clean for the next day of travel, this is not for you. With the extra price of parking, I would recommend staying in a cheap B&B or mansion over this hostel. (We stayed at Arundel Mansion- http://www.arundelmans... the next night and LOVED it!!!)
