I keep coming back because of the tasty food.  Like others, i do find the service a bit on the slower side, but it does usually get packed around dinner time.

I really enjoy the som tom and the seafood salad, ask for spicy and it will blow your socks off.  As for drinks, try the Thai caesar, it's quite delicious!

    RATSSSSSSS!!!

For the high price point, small tiny portions, and "nice" location you would expect your food to be prepared and served in a RODENT FREE environment. Wrong. My boyfriend and I and several other customers around us all saw not one but TWO rats running around underneath the tables. I think they have built a little living space by the bar. It is quite disgusting. Being that this is in a "nicer" area of Vancouver (comparing this to the rat epidemic occurring in all the restaurants on Fraser St.) you would expect it to be clean.

To add insult to the injury, the waitresses were very much aware of the rodent situation and one even shrieked a little bit and garnered the attention of a manager. They did not apologize to the customers who had seen the rats or offered any type of let-me-make-this-up-to-you but instead sent the waitresses around offering free iced tea. Seriously? Do you really think i'm going to be drinking iced tea prepared at the bar where I just saw two rats running towards? hmmmm i'll let you answer that one.

Never ever returning, and you shouldn't either.

You know, I kinda like this place. Yes, I know it's just off a main tourist strip and it's a bit pricey and I'm probably paying for the over-the-top décor as part of my bill (a life-sized tuk tuk at the front of the restaurant? really?) but the food is pretty good. Good as in...3.5 stars good. Not mind blowing, but they offer solid curries, good noodle dishes, crispy spring rolls, you get the picture.

And while dinner seems a bit pricey, I gotta give them props for offering nice lunch specials that are priced at/around their Davie Street competitors.

The service, however, has always ranged from polite but painfully slow, to awkward, to occasionally rude and neglectful. Not so much so that it prevents me from eating here if I'm in the mood for some pre-movie curry, but making customers feel welcome is definitely an area they can and should improve on.

It's a bit touristy but I must say the food is quite authentic. There's always a wait so don't come here if you're in a rush, service is quite slow even for seating.
I always get the tom yum with prawns and pad thai. They've been quite consistent and I'm happy.

Food wise, this place is great. Unfortunately, we ended up waiting over 45 minutes to actually see the food.  I'm a stickler for good service and this place just didn't do it for me.  If you do end up here, the pad thai is fantastic.

It's obviouslly a tourist trap and while my radar told me to run, I was with some "tourists" and gave in.

This place is a trifecta of a horror show. The staff like to have fights with each other in front of customers. I guess one table decided to walk out while waiting for their food and some staff member forgot to tell everyone else that they had left. Considering this isn't a rare occurance I think that would be their forte.

An insult to Thai restaurants, elephants and Thailand.

Salathai is a tourist trap galore because of its location.  The decor is lovely and everywhere you look, you see some Thair painting or sculpture.  I especially love the rickshaw in near the front of the restaurant, but that's where my love for this place ends.

The food is average I honestly was thinking of grabbing something else after dinner because I felt ripped off.  I was here for a friend's birthday party and my husband and I ordered the following:

Spring rolls - too oily and overpriced
Pad Thai - nothing great and too much of a ketchup-y taste
Green curry with pork - the pork was overcooked and the vegetables didn't soak in the curry taste.  It felt as if they had a vat of green curry in the back and they scoop it into bowl on top of the veggies and pork to be served.

Everything above was overpriced, but I would gladly pay those prices if the food were good.

Our server was a sweet lady, but she was unfortunately, not very good at her job.  We didn't get menus for half hour.  She brought us chicken in green curry instead of pork so we had to wait for it be changed.  She then brought the rice too early which was just sitting there for 10mins and then had to be changed because it ended up being cold by the time the curry came.  The food also came out at different times and some people were sitting there without food for 20 minutes while others were just staring at theirs.

In summary, the food is so-so, but with all the choices for Thai restaurants in Vancouver, you can do A LOT better.

Way over priced for the amount And quality of food .

I have tried this place 3 or 4 times for take out. First time was the best. The others left much to be desired.

To name just a few items we have ordered-

    The Satay
Skewers of stripped meats (beef, pork or chicken) marinated & grilled. Served with our homemade peanut sauce & cucumber salad. (4 pcs) $8.95
First time I ordered they gave me 6 skewers,so it seemed worth it. All other times the 4 skewers were way small, and we always had a very large amount of peanut sauce
left over. Sadly so not worth It

    Thai beef salad
It never has enough greens, and is way too salty- how this is supposed to be a salad is beyond me.

There was other items ordered but nothing worth mentioning neither  really good or really bad.

We actually returned our order one time as it was ice cold, by the time it came home from across the street .

Also the online menu & website won't load / work on my i Pad, due to it being flash, with no HTML option. The music is very annoying as well.

Way better options for Thai food. It's a shame being so close and all.

Great for a pre/after movie meal. I'm still searching for a good Thai place in vancouver and this is probably the best i've come across so far (not a lot of competition there). The curry dishes are solid and the noodles are average. The seafood dishes are also worth a mention - the sauces they cook them in are quite tasty !

This place is usually pretty packed and is great for large groups. The average price of an entree is about $12 and rice is extra. Lots of vegetarian options on the menu too.

Service is a bit slow -- but very friendly, so its forgivable.

Came here as part of a large group.

Parking here totally sucks, so try to hitch a ride off a friend, or make friends with someone who lives nearby.

The ambience is really well done.  Thailand is known for their elephants, and the big one on the wall that greets you on the way in drives that point home.  It really does feel like you're in some tropical resort, without the heat.  As with any self-respecting Thai restaurant, there are photos of the King and the Royal Family on the far wall.

The food here is arguably better than Thai House based on past experience, but today I decided to go off the beaten path (Drunken spicy noodle), and I was quite disappointed.  It honestly tasted like a spicier version of the rice noodle you can find in a food court.  I did have a chance to try the Pad Thai, and it is one of the better ones out there.  However, it doesn't have the same spicy kick that you'd find on the streets of Bangkok.

The drinks were on the fancy side, with some seriously exotic cocktails available.  I didn't try any myself though.

Would I come back?  Yes.  However, I'd be sure to try something else on the menu.

We went here because it was close to our hotel and we had a very good Thai dinner. It was full on a Sunday night.

We started with the fish cakes and had Pad Thai and spicy prawns. Both were very good. The service was friendly and our appetizer came out quickly though there was a bit of a wait for our entrees.

Nice decor which made the TVs by the bar seem out of place.

I would like to try this place again. It makes the list of places I'll return to, but won't be on my must-eat spots list. I love Thai food and I appreciated the variety of standard fare on their menu as well as their special house creations. I was pleased with great choices and variety even in the house wine selection, let alone a full menu of nice, reasonably priced choices.

The atmosphere and decor was great. Service here was okay -- not as attentive in the back corner of the restaurant where I sat with my friend, but my water was refilled regularly enough and our food didn't take long at all.

Rice doesn't come with most meals off the menu, so remember to order some. I didn't pay attention to the cost this adds to a meal, but factor that in.

My biggest complaint here is that I discussed with the server the spiciness level of my meal when ordering, and I told her I wanted my food spicy. She suggested medium hot spicy. It wasn't. It was tasty and flavorful, but it lacked any spice at all. I had to ask for some peppers or hot sauce, and they offered me a vinegar-based hot sauce that wasn't doing the trick. The dish I ordered, the Beef Prad Gra Pao, is always spicy at every Thai restaurant, so I'm a little confused why the chilies that were in this dish lacked any hotness. My friend had the Pad Prid Khing which was nice.

We also had dessert. My friend loved every bite of the fried banana with homemade coconut ice cream but I wasn't loving the dessert choice I made which was the black sticky rice with taro and cream. It didn't look as good as the photo, and was only okay. It was a bit too filling, and I wish I'd gotten mango sticky rice and/or coconut ice cream instead. Not having had it before, I can't say how it compared with other restaurants but I think Sala Thai's dessert offerings provide enough choices that perhaps I could have made a better selection. It's the only thing in our meal that wasn't finished.

The location and atmosphere are good. Having recently returned from Thailand, I can say that the food is a far cry from what you'd get there. The Pad Thai was too salty, and I suspect they use MSG, even though the host assured me that they don't. I'll give this one a pass next time I'm in the area.

I was walking by this place on my way home with my son and I stopped to look at their menu. My little man took that as we are going in sign and he stood by the door wanting to go in.
So I decided that we were going to have Thai food for lunch since I haven't had Thai food for awhile.
We waited for few minutes before we were seated. It was a weekday lunch time and it was fairly busy.
When we got to the table they took all the glasses except for one. Um hello? There are two of us here. Then they promptly filled only one glass with water. When  a server came to take the order I had to ask for another glass of water.
I ordered their lunch special rice and a pad tai.
The service was really slow. I am not sure whether this is a normal occurrence. The party at the next table commented on the slowness of the service too.
They looked like regulars there and they seemed little surprised by the snail service so hopefully this is not a regular thing.
It took a good thirty minutes to get our food. And waiting at a restaurant for food with a two year old is not a easy thing to do.

As for the food, it was all right, wasn't bad. I think I had better elsewhere.

I probably wouldn't come here again unless I happen to be in the area and having a really bad insatiable craving for Thai food.

3 Stars for Food but I had to dock a star for the slow service (and for only giving us one glass of water.)

AVOID!!! This restaurant has the whole ambiance, smiley friendly waiters, fantastic decorations and romantic dim-lighting going on...Truth is it's all deception.  The food is honestly top notch and authentic, but the portions are perhaps for 9 year old kids or something.  I'm SERIOUS!!!   I'm not even half way full by the time i finish my main course + dessert.   I've tried the place THREE times, and it disappoints me every time because of their ASTRONOMICAL prices (you'd expect a decent portion for something that costs $15.00)   I mean, can't they be a little bit more fair???  And for a tiny portion of main meal that costs $15.00, why do we have to pay $2.00 extra for a tiny bowl of rice.  ...........It's beyond my comprehension.

Anyway, I would've given 5 stars if the portions were decent.  I don't want to pay $25.00 + tip and have to go to the supermarket to grab something to eat afterwords.

    Avoid Avoid Avoid.

I kinda wanted to give this 2 1/2 stars, but I thought I'd be nice and round it up, its sunny outside and I am feeling nice. A friend from work suggested we make a lunch time rezzo, and I had never been to this location before, so what the heck, why not?

Our table was ready when we arrived, so we were seated promptly, and we picked out something from the lunch menu and ordered right away, since we only had an hour. I was going to order the eggplant dish, but when I asked our waitress for it, she abruptly told me they were out of that dish and it was posted on the white board at the front of the store. Ummm... okay, you could have just said "sorry we are out of that dish, is there something else I can get you?"  You don't have to make me feel like a jackass for not reading your specials sign at the front entrance. I ordered the green curry instead, since I had one recently that was pretty good, so I thought I'd try the one here. I asked if I could add tofu to the green curry, but I guess you can either have it with veggies or tofu, but not both... booo-urns.

We both got our salads pretty quick, and the waitress did check to see if I was okay to eat eggs, since she realized I was a vegetarian, which was nice, and for those that care, yes I can eat eggs. I am no vegan, giving up cheese is crazy talk! The salad was pretty okay, it was standard iceberg lettuce and pre-cut veggies like red cabbage and carrots. I kid you not, we waited at least twenty minutes before we got our main course. The place was busy, but not overflowing crazy busy, where the sense of urgency from the staff to get everyone fed makes you feel like you need to eat faster so they can rush more people through like cattle. I actually thought they forgot about us, and was just about to inquire about our lunch when it arrived.

The green curry was okay, the rice to curry ratio was 4:3, which made the rice to sauce ration more like 4:2, which made me a little disgruntled since I am so saucy. (Who doesn't love the sauce?) Although the lunch prices were pretty decent, (most of them around $10) I don't know if I'd bother waiting forever for a lunch that was just okay, so I can be treated like a jerk. Where the heck is Thai Away Home when you need them?

I'm a big Thai Fan! So, When I first moved out to Vancouver, one of the first orders of business was to find some delicious Thai.

Scanning the Map of Vancouver, I stumbled upon Salathai, and thankfully it was a hit!

    We ordered:
    1. Yellow Chicken Curry
    2. Mixed Seafood Dish
    3. Tofu with Eggplant

All incredible. Authentic Thai Flavors, complimented with the perfect atmosphere and great customer service, I was sold.

Definitely a place I old recommend if you're in the area- you won't be disappointed

So far, this place does the best Thai food for me! This was my second visit; ordered the massaman chicken with coconut rice (and it actually tastes like coconut! So many place state they do it and I receive plain rice). Absolutely delicious!

It does get pretty busy in there, so be prepared to book ahead or wait a little for a table. Nice decor, good service, and pretty prompt with food and drinks. The portion sizes look  a little small at first, but they're perfectly fine - who wants to overeat and feel like a lump afterwards??

There was a special on the Thai iced coffee this Wednesday evening, which was amazingly sweet, loved it! I recommend!

In Thailand there are two kinds of restaurants, expensive indoor places that only tourists go to, and cheap corner-store places where locals go to eat.  The tourist places offer standard, tasty dishes at 5 times the price.  The corner-store places serve gritty local food that can be out-of-this-world for less than $1.

If Salathai were in Thailand it would be a tourist restaurant.  The food is good, it's dependable, the portions are smaller and it's a little expensive (my lunch special was $8.99 before taxes and tip, plus I had an order of spring rolls for $1.99).  And wow, they really wanted us to order quickly, I guess because it was the lunch rush (our waitress came over like 3 times in rapid succession within the first 5 minutes after we sat down).

They seemed to have a very good understanding of vegetarian requests, if you're into that kind of thing; I guess they get that a lot.

Take out experience:  This restaurant is expensive for the quality and amount of food that is provided.  The decor is top notch but the food isn't on the same level.  I had the Pad Kra Pow (chicken basil) dish, which cost $12 and does not come with rice!  It was $2 extra for a side of steamed rice and there wasn't even enough rice (I like a lot of rice) to eat with the actual dish.  The Pad Kra Pow came with chicken, green peppers and onion and tasted better than a fast food restaurant, but not that much better.  The lady boy that worked behind the bar was pretty cute.  If it wasn't for the voice, I would not have know any better.

There is a liquor store across the street where you can pick up a nice bottle of wine.

It's been years since i've been here so my memory is a bit hazy, but from what I remember, Salathai was only mediocre. then again, vancouver is not exactly the center for the bestest thai food (though there are better joints in the city).

Let's see .... it's a tad overpriced, for Thai food but i guess normal for vancouver standards. The decor is pretty, restaurant big, decent service. The portions are kind of small and the food is mediocre. Passable, i suppose.

I ate here as part of a group back in October. Was never really a Thai food fan but ordered what I think was spelled "Pa-Naeng." It was delicious.

I brought my mother with me to Vancouver and wanted her to try this really good Thai place. She also ordered the Pa-Naeng... I ordered with chicken, she got it with pork... and it was great (be sure to get steamed rice with it). My mom is hard to please so I know if she said she liked it, she must have really liked it.

Now, if I ever find myself in downtown Vancouver again, I know one place I'll have to go another time. Prices are good too.

I came to this place twice and wasn't very impressed either time. Both times the service wasn't great, and we had to wait around for a long time to pay. After almost 10 minutes of trying to make eye contact, I eventually got up and had to grab someone.

The food I had was bad.  I ordered duck, and what I got was a huge amount of duck skin, and little pieces of very fatty duck in between. This dish should be called "Duck skins" instead. The description is misleading, and I couldn't finish even half of it.

I've past this restaurant by dozens of times but never gave it a second look as it looked a bit old on the outside and possibly made for the tourist crowd or ones looking for "Thai" but not really knowing what Thai food tastes like (you know, like saying mall Chinese fast food is "real" Chinese food).   I was in the look out for some good asian food the other day and said, "Why not?".  Boy, I was not disappointed!

This has got to be one of the better Thai restaurants I've been to in the Lower Mainland.  The food was authentic and tasty.  The spices used all complimented each other with no one overpowering each other.  I've had Thai food before where all you tasted was the chilies, the coconut or one of the other common ingredients used in Thai cooking.  Not so here.  They had a wide variety of dishes to choose from with some items you do not find in other establishments.

Tip:  If you're undecided or want some variety, chose their $25 set menu.  You get a good sampling of their food.

As for service, I don't know if I hit it right or not as I didn't experience some of the slow service others complained about.  While the place was about 50% full, I had excellent service.  The servers popped by frequently clearing plates, filling my glass of water, and asking how things were.

    A definite return customer here!

A last minute decision to eat at Salathai downtown.  We ordered the standard stuff - Pad Thai, Beef Curry with Rice, Tom Yum soup

Overall the quality was disppointing.  The rice was too hard, the beef was overcooked, and the pad thai noodles were also too hard.  The only good dish was the soup.

My experience at the one at the Cambie location is a lot better, the food is always consistent there.

Inside, it's a lot nicer than I thought it would be. It was quite warm and inviting with the right amount of cheesiness. Our server was nice - and the food came out fast.

Golden Baskets - 6 little waffle shells filled with chicken, onions and corn and topped with cilantro. The flavours were intense - really fresh and the waffle baskets thingies (technical term) were crispy - not soggy from the filling. Perfect sized appetizer.

We ordered pad thai (which was good - not oversauced and there was a lot of shrimp) and curried chicken with eggplant and bamboo shoots. Again, really good - lots of flavour. We were going to order another dish but our server told us not to order that one because it wasn't cooked in coconut milk and no one who orders it likes it. They probably should just take it off the menu, no? Whatevs...what we had was good.

They could be a little more generous with the portions of rice. The portions of the main dishes were perfect.

They have pretty good lunch specials! Fairly priced, for about $14 you get a meal with rice and a soup and a spring roll. Whereas if you go at dinner time, you wil have to add rice to your main meal.
I didn't really like their traditional dish (noodles with tofu), but all of the seafood that I tried was delicious!

The ambiance in Sala Thai and the food are both pretty good, which makes me happy because I've discovered that I love Thai food.

I've enjoyed the pad see-ew, the red curry, and the shrimp/chicken/squid salad (forgot what it was called).  The food all comes out in a pretty timely manner.

Service can get a little slow when the restaurant gets crowded, however.

Also, coming up from the Bay Area, prices were a little higher than what I'm used to, but you probably get more from the ambiance and pretty surroundings here than at a hole-in-the-wall establishment.  (But still, $4.00 for thai iced tea makes me sad)

We originally were heading towards Azia, but we happened to walk past Sala Thai first and decided their menu looked pretty good.  I ordered the oyster beef and my friend ordered something that was spicy...I want to say cashew chicken.  Either way, both of our orders were pretty tasty, but nothing extraordinary.

The only real negatives from the meal revolved around service.  They were fairly busy but I have never waited that long for a meal in a Thai restaurant before.  It was definitely over 45 minutes before our meals came out and no one ever came to check on us or give us an update.  Our waiter was all smiles for us until we asked for the check to be split.  Then he disappeared without a word for a good ten minutes.  He finally came back with our checks, but overall our meal took nearly two hours, so you might not want to dine here if you're in a hurry.

The only other thing, which isn't a big deal, it's just a pet peeve of mine, was that rice isn't included in the meal.  I hate when servers don't clarify that when they take your order and I didn't think to ask since I didn't see a side of rice listed anywhere on the menu.  I think the rice was under $2, so it's not a big deal, just something to know.

Likely the best Thai restaurant in Vancouver. We had the Prix Fixe multi-course meal which included a hearty salad, a panang dish, a shrimp dish that had what you could easily call muscular shrimp, and Tom Kha soup that is supreme in its ability to have multi-flavors and accents to its broth. Coconut ice cream for dessert. More than full, it was bursting. Nicely soothing and decorative interiors. too.

My 2nd visit and the food continues to offer up solid thai flavours.  The restaurant is large and the staff is always attentive, so an enjoyable experience.

I've found portion sizes to be small for the price in some dishes, but overall it's ok.

What a nice escape from the fast and greasy food we been eating here in Vancouver. This place was a lot nicer than I was expecting. It was really cute and calm inside. The food was great. The portions are not as large as I was expecting, however the amount you get is enough to split between 2 people. I got the Thai ice tea which was not as sweet as I usually get, but It was still tasty.

Overall this is a nice place to go to escape the quick eats and yet have a delicious meal.

Seriously not good.  We were craving Thai food and didn't want to go out so we ordered from Salathai because they deliver unlike so many other Thai restaurants (even if they advertize that they do).  The food got here and $57 later we barely had enough to feed the three of us.  WTF?  Do not eat from here, make your own, get sushi or Chinese.  So unimpressed

Oh Sala Thai, how much I love this restaurant for some many reasons....

    two reasons -

bobby, and brian ( staff ) maybe the best freaking staff ever!!!!

    and

    the food!!!

Seriously I am the biggest thai food snob you'll ever find, and at Sala Thai it's pretty much on point, and always delicious.. they really take pride in their restaurant, and make you feel quite at home.

As bobby comes on by every table and drapes their pink napkin on our laps, it make me feel like I am in an upscale restaurant :)

Everything on the menu was delicious, but what stuck out the most was their coconut ice cream :)

anyhow, Thanks for always making it feel welcoming, and authentic for being on a main drag in downtown Vancouver!!!

We walked blocks and blocks trying to decide what to eat for the night...Salathai came into view and Thai food it is.

The decor of the restaurant is adorned with Thai accents, including a tuk tuk carriage and on one of the walls was a huge elephant head. Getting seated makes you feel like you are walking through a street in Thailand.

A decent sized restaurant and there were only 2 waitresses.  Service wasn't the best.  Yes, they took our order promptly but it took 15 minutes to get our beer even though our Crispy Thai Squid appetizer was already out.  The squid was good, seasoned perfectly, fried with a flaky batter and mixed in with diced red onions, green pepper, and fried mint leaves.  It was served with a sweet chili sauce that complemented the squid really well.  The only downside of this app was that it was a bit greasy.  I wish they took the time to let the oil drip through in the kitchen before bringing it out.

There is a set dinner menu at $25 per person which included 2 apps, 1 soup, 3 entrees, and a dessert.  What a deal!  But because we are on vacay, we knew there would be leftovers so we couldn't order the set.  Instead, we got the special of the night, Green curry with jumbo prawns and scallops.  We also got an order of Pad Thai.  The curry was perfect.  Just enough coconut milk, wasn't watery, and had huge flavor.  Creamy, spicy, went great with the plump prawns and the perfectly cooked scallops.  We couldn't help ourselves and drowned our jasmine rice with the curry.  The pad thai noodles were great too.  Not too greasy or saucy, noodles weren't overcooked and the flavor was good.  They didn't skimp on the shrimp that were in the pad thai either.

Walking into Salathai was a great surprise.  Although the service wasn't up to par, the food was delicious.  We left satisfied and our tummy's full and happy.

After eating out everyday for the last month, the guy and I needed a break. We needed to eat at home - without cooking anything.

Enter: A massive hankering for pad thai.

    Also enter: laziness.

Where could we get Thai takeout and not have to walk more than 2 blocks?

    Enter: Salathai.

We ordered pad thai, garlic chicken, spring rolls, and their house salad.

Overall, the pad thai was pretty good. I thought it could have used more heat and sweet and less oil, but it was good enough to satisfy my pad thai craving.

The garlic chicken was tasty: it had just enough garlic flavor without being overwhelming.

When we picked up our food, we did get to sneak a peak at the interior. It was a little, um, theme-y, but I guess with solid food offerings, I can definitely overlook all of that.

Salathai is my favourite Thai place in Vancouver.  I have to have one lunch here when I'm in Van.

I discovered it (by myself) and told my husband excitedly that he had to come with me next time because I had finally found a place that made Pad Thai (Thailand's national dish practically)   the way they do in Thailand.

I have never had a disappointing dish here.
