Review from Victoria R.
Vancouver, BC
This place is France in Vancouver.
I've been here twice - once five years ago, and once last week. The gap wasn't for any reason relating to the restaurant.
The first time I went, I recall asking for wine. The server, in his thick french (and slightly pompous) accent said "red or white?". I said red - and asked what types he had. He simply replied rather arrogantly "red of white." No grape variety - just table wine. I remember the food being excellent despite the slightly arrogant frenchman.
Fast forward 5 years later - the same frenchman is there, and we get our table in the open-area. It's like being in an indoor patio - I felt like i was in a courtyard, not a community center.
He asked us what wine we wanted - and I expected there to be the same 'red or white' - but there was an actual menu! I commented on it and he laughed, and said it was probably him who had answered me 5 years ago with those two options, but since then they were told they could no longer allow people to bring their own booze (a shame!).
The food is amazing. I've had dinner there twice and both times I've been impressed. It really is gourmet dining - in the most unpretentious little bistro that's hidden out of the way. I would take their dinner over an actual 'fine dining' restaurant (like Market by Jean-Georges) any day of the week. I had the duck confit with frites, and my dining partner had the salmon wellington. Both were absolutely exquisite.
The servers looked after us - midway through our meal a table opened up inside the actual bistro, so they asked if we wanted to move. We were quite happy where we were - but appreciated that they offered. The bread was free-flowing, as was the wine, and they seemed genuinely happy to be serving.
Say what you will about the French, this place is charming. -

I have no idea what happened to this place. It used to be my "go to" spot for mussels. Sadly, last time I went the mussels were at least a day old and tasted of chalky, mushy, rotten seafood.
Perhaps the pretentious french waiter thought that I wouldn't notice that their seafood was off as I am not their usual older clientelle.
Perhaps he thought that the overpriced bottle of Jackson Triggs Chardonnay would make me not notice how off they were,. Or maybe, he was just unamused by the fact that our French wasn't decent enough to carry a conversation.
Nonetheless, the once great food used to justify the server and owner's attitude, inattentiveness, and arrogance, but this time it didn't even come close to covering it.
I won't be returning anytime soon.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Salade de Fruit, je t'aimes! ^^
Wow! The other day my foodie friend and I were debating where to eat. We usually go for Asian food (or at least I do), but since she had just returned from France and had mentioned how disappointed she was in the food there, I was curious as to what her standard for good French food would be. She immediately thought of this place, which she said she hadn't visited for years but still remember fondly.
So we came and despite the line-up were greeted pleasantly and encouraged to visit the free Christmas market which was taking place in the same building while we waited.
The restaurant is located on trendy West 6that the French Cultural Centre. The open concept set up gave it a bit of a sidewalk bistro feel - without the need to deal with the elements outside.
Now, let's skip ahead to the food because I can't wait. My friend was insistent we order the mussels with fries and the French Onion soup. I also order the Eggs Benny because we kept glancing at the tables next to us who had ordered it and it looked too good to pass up. The mussels were amazing! They were so flavourful and meaty. I quickly understood why my friend didn't even ask me if we would prefer the salad (we shared everything). We looked a little regretful that we didn't save the bread for dipping too! The French Onion soup was also super yummy - just enough sweetness from the onions and savoriness from the cheese and bread - not over the top like some places do it. Finally the Eggs Benny were also decent. I wasn't a huge fan of the sausage (which I had added in the same manner as other tables) but I was super impressed that they used oyster mushrooms instead of crimini as I had expected (also an add-on coz I'm a mushroom fan).
Both my friend and I were super satisfied and happy.
All in all, it was a meal worth going out for - and you don't have to travel all the way to France to get it! Now, I just have to practiquer mon francais! ^^ -

We found good reviews on Yelps and reasonable price for French cuisine.
Yes... Great foods and causal bistro. However, we found the bistro liked a food court/cafeteria.
Appetizers:
The escargots were too garlic and taste blended.
The onion tart was huge - same size as full entree!! hmmm... it was too soft and soaky.
Entrees:
Sea Bass with seared scallop was great!! Well... Sea bass hard to over cook.
Duck leg was a bit dry like turkey, but, it still good.
I have no complain for such prices with food. -
Review from Herman E.
Very easy to miss, and if you didn't know any better, there IS a restaurant in the cultural centre.
As already mentioned by other Yelpers, the menu is in french and it is cash only. The actual restaurant is small, but in the evenings they open up a few more table into the lobby/entrance of the cultural centre if needed.
Very reasonably priced bistro fare. -

I recently finally got around to trying this place for Saturday brunch.
There is a sign on the door saying 'use other door', not the one next to it, but the one to the building's main entrance a few meters west.
I laughed as others arrived after me trying what I did, pulling on the locked 'next' door.
Anyways you walk thru a lobby of a multi-use building, which also holds about half of the restaurant's tables. The primary part of the restaurant and kitchen are characterful and cozy, but I'd pass on sitting in the building's lobby. Just not very intimate, and could easily be improved upon.
Onto the food etc.
I ordered a cappuccino. It was fine, but nothing comes close to the standard that Revolver has set for me.
I ordered Eggs Benedict from the menu, but the server then tells you about the option for your benny. I chose crab/spinach with lamb sausage included.
The benny was cooked perfectly, on a standard, store-bought muffin; the spinach/crab looked good but had no taste of crab at all. I kept playing with it and tasting it to challenge my taste buds awareness. The lamb sausage was kind of dry, but was ok. The servers passed in front of my table several times but failed to check in on how my meal was. After I finished eating I stopped my server and asked for a regular 'top up' of black coffee, and found it was later added to the bill. Not the end of the world I guess. My bill quietly arrived without any communication from the servers.
Reasonably priced brunch, but not stellar.
Vancouver has so many great brunch options that I doubt I'd head back here anytime soon. -

Great little French Restaurant, at a reasonable price. Went with my Girlfriend last night and most French restaurant's charge around $40 a plate in Vancouver, this one averaged $20-$25. We both had beautiful 3 course meals along with a glass of beer for myself for under $70. I do have one small complaint about this place though is that their seats are not very comfy.
Also, this restaurant does have a Catch, REMEMBER THAT IT IS CASH ONLY! -
Review from Jess L.
Ahhh I love this place. It's a tiny little cafe in the French Cultural Centre and so far everything that I've tried here has been really good, and it is very reasonably priced! Loved the onion soup, the crepes, the mussels and fries here :)
A couple of things to note:
This place is Cash Only
The entire menu is in French, but the staff are really good about translating anything that you need to know.
They're closed Sundays and Mondays, and between 2:15pm-5:00pm -

J'adore Salade de Fruits!
This is a fantastic little French bistro/restaurant on the ground floor of the French Cultural Centre.
They offer a simple selection of French bistro classics (steak frites, moule frites, steak tartare ect....) and a great selection of fresh daily specials. I've tried the table d'haute which is a fixed price 3-course menu and you can't beat the value. You're given a choice of 2-3 starters, 2-3 mains and a pair of deserts. For $25-$30 I guarantee you'll walk away satisfied.
My personal favourite dish is the Moules Frites. It's always consistently good. The sauce for the moules is quite rich, but chock full of flavour and doesn't overpower the taste of the moules. The frites are the perfect shoestring cut and fried to perfection.
The decor is quite simple. Most of the restaurant is in the lobby of the French Cultural Centre, so there is always a buzz of activity around you while you eat. Somehow it manages to maintain a certain level of warmth and intimacy.
The wait staff are all friendly and very helpful, and are more than obliging if you want to practice speaking French.
I'm going to keep coming here to get my fix of well priced, well made French cuisine.
A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: They are cash only! -

After reading the raves regarding the mussels et frites! I wanted to go so badly, so there I was! And that was what I ordered.
I've tried more than my share of mussels.. and these were only alright.. Granted they were very large in size, and plump. Broth was savory, but didn't have that slurp slurp, use your bread to soak every last drop taste. It was light white wine, but still tasted delicious. But like I said.. I've had better. Fries.. thin.. and not too special either. Serving was generious.. but it was only ok.. that I didn't even get to finish half of my plate of fries.
Service was great. And atmosphere was cute. We were lucky enough to be seated inside (and not outside in the community centre) by the window, where we were surrounded by the cute knick knacks, but also had a nice view of the patio where others were getting their french on. The wait staff all spoke french! Got my friends order or salad wrong, but were very quick to replace it. The reminded me that my fries did not come with ketchup.. and I remaked with "oh but i wanted it with mayo" and they replied with OUI! TRES BIEN! haha
I'd give the service a 4.5 star :)
But the food.... I might have been expecting too much from the over glorified reviews. My friend said that she could probably have made her salad at home.. and not at that price. She ordered the salad with prociutto and melons. Quality and freshness was there tho. But no pizzazzzzz. Something you'd atleast expect from their salad with fruits, as its their restaurants name! :O
TIP: When recieving your pot of mussels, and they tell you the pot is hot... THE POT IS HOT! I mistakenly touched the "handles" because usually you can touch .. something.. to push it to the correct spot on the table.. and was burned :( now i have a burn bubble. I soaked it in my glass of cold water all throughout lunch. -
Review from Justin L.
Almost odd to have a cash-only FRENCH place, so accustomed am I to cash-only Asian digs. Oh well, yeah, screw those credit card corporations with their exorbitant fees! Another indication of this café's independent-mindedness is the (sometimes annoying) fact that it often seems closed when you want to go there. Ah, the French and their holidays.
Salade de Fruits has long been a destination spot for MOULES FRITES. Tip: You can get the exact same thing at lunch for a few bucks less. And they are good -- extra good when the mussels are in season: pleasurably plump, sensuously succulent, definitely delectable.
The other menu items, however, are less impressive. My recent STRIP STEAK was fairly bland and chewy; the brandy in the sauce was not reduced enough so that it tasted too strongly of alcohol. The RABBIT was good, but not memorable. And it's not like the food is particularly good value.
If the tables inside seem to be set up in a community centre, that's because they are: the cafe is housed within La Maison de la Francophonie -- the French cultural centre -- and upstairs on the second floor is a dance studio and reputable piano school. All of which lends the vibe that added artsy atmosphere. -

This is an amazing little French cafe. Not too expensive and the portions are generous.
The mussels and fries and the escargot are great. Free bread on the table.
Service is friendly and enthusiastic, but a bit slow. I think the slowness had to do with how popular this place is and how small their kitchen is. -

Mmmmmussels, served with fries, so good! I've been there twice now and the mussels were the highlight both times. The second time was for dinner and we shared the gigantic portion of plump mussels along with a perfect rack of lamb. The lamb was tender and flavourful and served with roasted root veggies that were perfect tender al dente. Make sure you save some bread for dipping into the mussel broth!
Service was great from the waiter that perfectly understood our timing requirement as we were headed to Cirque du Soleil right after the meal.
As mentioned before, it's cash only here. -
Review from Alexander Bromley Clark D.

This little French bistro has been in my neighbourhood for more than ten years, yet I have never found a time or excuse to dine here in the past. Perhaps this is due to the fact that I have subconsciously avoided it because the idea of enjoying a competently prepared calmars frits or salade de chevre chaud in a community centre is not at all appealing. Salade de Fruits is located in Vancouver's French Cultural Centre, and many people enjoy the unpretentious, authentic feel of the restaurant.
I finally managed to dine here last week with my co-workers. It is funny how my opinion of this meal has evolved. During dinner, I was impressed with the unrelentingly French servers, the table d'hotes options, and the casual atmosphere of the space. Of the ten entrees that were ordered, I only heard negative reviews for one of them. I ordered the large duck confit, which consisted of two legs atop a subtle cassis sauce, mash, and a tiny vegetable tipi composed of crisp asparagus, snap peas, acorn squash, and broccoli. Although I am obsessed with duck confit and would probably order this as my last meal on death row, the asparagus almost stole the show. It was cooked (blanched) perfectly. I should note, however, that I did like the confit at Les Faux Bourgeois and Jules more when considering portions and flavour.
A day or two after dinner at Salade de Fruits, I kept thinking about how odd the dining room at the Cultural Centre was. Once the Centre shuts down for the day, tables are simply put out into the lobby. I was the furthest one can get from the kitchen, at the head of our table, and I was practically sitting in the dark library of the Centre, which connects to the lobby. In hindsight, the idea of consuming $20-$25 entrees in a québécois community centre just isn't as appealing as enjoying a similar meal in a cozy, hip restaurant such as Les Faux or Jules. -

Hidden away in the French cultural center is this cute french bistro style restaurant. They have a great selection of food - something for everyone, from vegetarians to meat lovers to seafood and all at a very reasonable price. The avg. price for an entree is $9 and comes with a salad or fries.
The food always tastes like its made from fresh ingredients and their cheesy dishes are oh-so-yummmy ! Try their poutine or the lasagne to see what I mean.
Just a note - this place is cash only ! so remember that before going here... -
Review from Kim L.
Vancouver, BC
I adore the feel of the outdoor eating area, the French accents of our waiters, the fact that I can peer over the kitchen to see the chef working, and the coziness of the restaurant--up until I see the glass partition that divides the inner sanctum from the lobby of the community center.
I was told that SdF's mussels were better than other establishments I've been to, so I had to check it out for myself. The mussels weren't as fatty as the other places I've tried, and although the broth was good, I can't remember or describe for you what it tasted like now. My dinner date had the rabbit, which was good, but not outstanding.
I don't feel this is a destination place since I wasn't overcome with taste bud coma, but I would come back if a friend were to suggest it...perhaps brunch this time? -

I'm loathe to write a glowing review of this place because I want to keep it all to myself. But I discovered it thanks to Yelp, so time to pay it forward I suppose!
This place is truly fantastic. We walked in to the building (it's IN the community centre, FYI) and were greeted by several energetic waiters, one of whom pointed to the "CASH ONLY" sign. Of course, not one of the four of us had cash, so we all headed out to our respective banks and returned a couple minutes later. The menu can be a bit overwhelming, but as we were obviously noobs, the waiter patiently (but rapidly) took us through it.
I ordered the tarte à l'ognion, one friend had a smoked salmon sandwich, and the other two ordered the quiche of the day (crab and spinach). The quiche and the tarte were both perfect, although I preferred my tarte. The texture was just out of this world delicious and the caramelization... I'm salivating just thinking about it. The sandwich was very good, but less spectacular than the other dishes. Each of the plates comes with a choice of a huge helping of fries or salad. The fries are crispy (twice cooked) and very salty, which is exactly how I like them. The side salad was simple but everything was fresh and it wasn't overdressed. I also ordered a kir- it was lunch, but it was my birthday- and was excited to see that they made it perfectly. Service was attentive, but relaxed. They didn't give us the check until we asked for it, which seemed to irritate my friend, but it's typical of French service.
I think Salade de fruits is perfect and fabulous for lunch. It's inexpensive, delicious and really cute. The atmosphere might be a little funky for dinner, but it depends on your outlook on these things. I personally think it's precious, quirky and very Parisian. ("I see we 'ave zees corner ici... let us turn eet een to un bistro!")
My last note would be that I think it improves the whole experience if you speak or at least understand a bit of french- the menus are in french and the waiters and much of the clientele are French speakers. But the staff seemed equally happy to engage with us in French or English.
...and remember CASH ONLY! -
Review from Mark H.
C'est magnifique! Yes I know a little French, but I will spare insulting the French by speaking it.
I had already had lunch before coming here, but having a sweet tooth I craved some dessert. At first I ordered their apple pie, but the waiter (yes he was French) suggested I try their pear and almond cake with blueberry sauce and fresh whipped cream. I'm glad I went with the pear, it was tres bon. Light, refreshing, and palate exciting.
By the way, they only accept Cash, so put your plastic away people!
Friends had the lobster soup, fish and chips, chicken cordon bleu, and penne something with bacon. All were mmm'ing and excited throughout.
Having been to France, Salade de Fruits is definitely authentic and much more polite to boot compared to those in France.Listed in: Unique Places

WOW.
Thats all i can say!
This was a great place! Its really small, but cute restaurant in a great quiet neighbourhood. Most people that work there are actually from France or Quebec, they all speak french to one another at work, therefore made me feel/believe that i was in France out for dinner with my family. (NO JOKE!)
The food was absolutely delicious, and when food came out of the kitchen (for other tables and ours), the servers would show us the food and tell us what it is before sending it off to the rightful hungry stomach owner.
The portions were quiet large, but very reasonable. Prices were PERFECT for my broke-student-budget, and the service was great! This restaurant is known for their Mussels and French Fries order, i dont eat mussels, but my parents and brother LOVED the mussels, and are still talking about them today!
Just a heads up though, the restaurant is CASH only!! Luckily my family knew that before we sat down to eat!
I highly recommend this place for a little taste of French Cuisine! -

Hidden French Gem
The hype is definitely through word of mouth. This place is a hidden french gem.
Food:
Great Food and Incredible vaue
We had their fixed prie - starting with greens, which were alright
Boulibase soup for the entree, this now was delicious and finished off with a delicious tarte.
The only downside was their very limited wine menu, that was quite dissapointing.
Ambiance:
It is a tiny, hidden gem for the locals. Very granville cafe atmosphere, if you are a vancouverite you would know what I mean. Relaxing, leisurely, friendly atmosphere. They also have a charming patio, probably 10 seats.
Service:
It was Solid, they do alright, not the most friendliest of service. We definetly felt the pressure when they came around to ask us what we wanted to order.
Recommendation: definitely be back -

This is such a cute little restaurant, with cute Francais-speaking servers. It's inside the Maison de Francophone, so an excellent place to dust off your French when ordering. I came during what I thought was a busy time, during an event called "Bike the Blossoms", but as it turns out, this affordable French cafe is always that busy.
I had a fairly simple lunch of French onion soup and a croissant sandwich, but it was more than enough to fill me up (and I was hungry from riding my bike clear across Vancouver). I would definitely like to go back and try one of the table d'hote menus for dinner. I hear, though, that you must make reservations. And as far as I know, it is a cash-only establishment. -

I must love this place. I've been here for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Its tucked downstairs of the Vancouver Francophone Cultural Centre, where throughout the years the seating expanded far into the lobby. Naturally, the menu is written in french only. So prepare to refresh your high-school french, or the ask the friendly staff to explain.
Let me start with brunch: their french-style omlettes are light in texture and very flavourful, whether its the smoke salmon or button mushroom filling.....brie also makes everything taste better. I developed a love for mussels at this restaurant and shared many a platter of mussels over lunch. The lightly seasoned shoestring poutine is dressed with hearty gravy and topped with cheese. For dinner, try the duck confit or fish of the day, as both are well prepared. One of these days I will have the courage to order rabbit.
Make room for dessert, because they are worth the indulgence.....it's a no-brainer: creme brulee and 2 spoons please. -
Review from Jenna L.
I loooove this place. Unpretentious, fun people serving great wholesom food. They have a great set menu for 22.99 which changes every week. But I love Moules Frites so I always order that. It comes with a big pot of mussels and a very generous portion of French fries for 15.99. How can it get better than that????!!!!!Their mussels are big, plumpy and soft... oh yum..... The broth changes from time to time, I had a creamy white wine sauce. Last time I had a very homey tomato sauce with a lot of veggies and it was equally good. I know other places like Chambar serves specialty mussels but I love this place more! I can have a happy loud chat with friends and we would perfectly fit the place!

I was introduced to Salade de Fruits by my friends who are local to the area and you would never know it was there.
Best known for their Moules et Frites (mussels and chips/fries) this place is a nice break from your typical lunch and brunch establishment. Although the employees are French speaking, you don't need to know French to order.
The service is friendly and the food is great. If you're not into seafood they have other great offerings including poutine, crepes, and some delicious French coffee. Bring cash because that is all they accept. -

Unpretentious French food. You will feel like you are in Paris getting a bargain! Have been to this restaurant numerous times and each time I wonder, why don't I come here more often. Tonight we had the Table de Hote. Choice of two appetizors, four entree's and two desserts. Wonderful, both my wife and I had the duck confit as our main. I had the duck appetizer and my wife had the goat cheese salad. They were both wonderful. We both ended it with the apple strudel. All the above plus two beers each for under $100. Can't be beat.

One of the best lunch spots in Vancouver. The soup and sandwich combo never disappoints, and neither does the waitstaff either. They are helpful, attentive, and entertaining. The environment is great too - I think its worth waiting for a spot inside, if possible. So cute in there, French the way I like to conceive of it. Eating outside on the patio would be nice if the weather is really nice, but I don't know, that street isn't all that picturesque.
I've actually never been for dinner, but I'm guessing its just as great. -

Authentic, unassuming, excellent. The entrecot and frites were the real deal. The escargot swam in a properly prepared garlic butter. The ahi was nicely seared, and the seafood melange was quite delicate. The staff was delightful and attentive but not remotely overbearing.

I've only been there for dinner, but I'm sure lunch (as frequently mentioned) is equally outstanding. I've been to France numerous times, Salade is the real deal at half the price & none of the attitude. Yes, the wine list is very short & it is cash only. Reservations a must. Enjoy!
