Good food for the price. The tempura and katsu batters are very light, and portions are pretty generous (except for the salmon - rather thin pieces). Can have complimentary tekka fried (dine in $20) or California roll or 2 liter beverage with $25 pick-up or delivery. Pros: Tempura, chicken katsu, Veggie caterpillar roll, lion king roll and the tekka fried are tasty. Has more "cooked" sushi (I know I know, not traditional!). But very reasonable "Japanese" food (lunch bento for $6.95!) Service is a little uneven but always friendly, and the atmosphere is pleasant and clean!

The DBF [Dear Boyfriend for all you non-TPFers {The Purse Forum}] and I are Asian--Chinese to be exact. Because we are Asian, we can't turn down a good deal. Sake Zone's lunch and dinner Bento boxes are a FABULOUS deal, therefore the DBF and I can't ever really turn down going there. My logic is irrefutable, so don't argue with me. LoLx
For Lunch Bentos, you get to choose 2 items from their list. It also comes with miso soup, a side salad, and 4 California rolls--all for $6.95. For Dinner Bentos, you get a choice of 3 items, miso soup, and a side salad for $10.95. For dine-in's, you also get a choice of a fried tekka roll or a small hot sake--ON THE HOUSE! If that's not a deal, I don't know what is!
For dinner, I always order the Bento with mixed tempura, tonkatsu, and salmon sashimi. I absolutely lovee their mixed veggie and shrimp tempura. While most places give you 2 pieces of shrimp, Sake Zone gives you 3! The tempura batter is always light and crisp, never soggy. You can tell it's fresh from the fryer. The tonkatsu is perfectly breaded in panko and tender, not the least bit oily. The salmon sashimi is also surprisingly fresh. You'd expect that the portions would be miniscule considering you get 3 choices, but they`re NOT. They definitely don't skimp on the portions. The DBF and I always leave Sake Zone with full bellies. [pic: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Having never tried the rolls there, I can't say much about them. The salmon skin handroll is really good though. The salmon skin is deep fried in a light tempura batter, then rolled with rice and avocado. The creaminess from the avocado and crispiness of the salmon skin complement each other nicely.
The waitresses are very friendly and attentive. They were constantly refilling our teacups, which was great since I never had to ask for refills there. Another plus is that they do free delivery on orders over $10. Average delivery time is half an hour for lunch. I haven't had them do a delivery for dinner yet, so I'm not too sure how long that takes.
Formerly Sake House on California and 5th Ave, Sake Zone moved to it's current location a few years back. There's metered parking in front and street parking around the corner.
My suggestion is to skip the rolls and go straight for the bentos! -

This place has much improved since my last review! Their food is delicious and for such a great price. This is definitely my go to place when I have nothing around to eat. I still have to double check when I order for a pick up, but 9/10 times my order is correct so no complaints.

Review from Elaine Y.
Writing this review live at the restaurant as I'm waiting for my food. I was going to give this place four stars until the wait for our food to arrive is getting longer and longer. The place is almost vacant (6:30pm in a Wed). Ordered the Monster Roll, Lion King Roll, Fried Tofu, California Hand Roll and a Spicy Miso Soup.
When you order $20 or more, you get a free small hot sake. Which is a little plus. The California Hand Roll was really skinny and had a REALLY minimal stuff in there. Not the best hand roll I have nor even hitting the average mark. The Lion King Roll was decent, but I definitely had better. The Monster Roll was definitely Monster Roll. Sitting next to the Lion King Roll, it was much more bigger! Had a party of 2 and we couldn't finish everything so we had to pack them to go.
For a CHEAP good sushi fix, this is your place. They might not have that much selection though. But for a good QUALITY sushi fix, this is not the place to go. -

First let me say I have no problems with the food.
What I do have a problem with is the current delivery service. My family and I have been ordering from Sake Zone for at least 4 years now. Delivery has been slow at times but today was absolutely unacceptable. In the past, delivery has taken 30-45mins after ordering. Today I placed my order at 6:40pm and at 8:10 my food still had not arrived. I called back to find out what was going on and the woman who took my order informed me that the delivery person had JUST left and it would be at least another 20 minutes before our food arrived.
At 8:30 the doorbell rings and I go downstairs to ask why it took two hours for my food to arrive. The delivery person informed me that the owners now wait until there are enough orders to go out for deliveries so gas isn't wasted. I feel sorry for whoever makes deliveries because it is NOT their fault they are delivering food so untimely, it is the owners. Two hours after ordering is ridiculous.
I would strongly advise against ordering food for delivery especially if you are hungry. If you do decide to order, don't chew out your delivery person, call the restaurant back and give them a piece of your mind. -

My first and second visits has been good for dinners. The dinner bento boxes lets me choose three items and it comes with rice, salad, and miso soup.
The bento boxes contains a lot of food, plenty to eat and maybe take home. Most Japanese restaurants will only give you one or two shrimp tempura, but they give you three here; plus, you can tell by the batter they use that it's freshly prepared.
I also enjoyed the chicken and pork katsu, it's also freshly made with the bread crumbs. It takes a little longer to make it fresh, but worth it. I like Japanese food and can tell when the cooked food is freshly made, or has been mass manufactured/prepared and sitting in a restaurant's freezer.
I can't comment on the sushi because I didn't order it yet.
What's a little strange about the place is that it's frequently empty. On my last visit, other than my table, there was only one table occupied. But the perk of this is more attentive service by the waitress. -

Lunch time!!!
Wait...What?!.. NO FOOD, NO MED REPs Today?!? oh darn...
SAKE ZONE IT IS!!!
Although I've never been to the actual restaurant, my coworkers and I tend to always order here. The people who take the order and the delivery boys are always so nice!
The Deluxe Lunch Bento Box for $6.95 is a great deal!
It includes salad, california rolls, miso soup and two choices from the list. I tend to order the Salmon Teriyaki and Tempura mix! YUM!
They deliver pretty fast and the food is plenty!
SAKE ZONE, I'M A FAN! THANKS! -

Honestly one of the best places around to fulfill your weekly sushi craving. They're are literally around the corner from my house, so it's easy to call in my order and pick up 15 minutes later, but they also offer delivery for those who don't want to walk.
The Chef's Special B - Sushi & Sashimi Combo is the way to go. You get five pieces of nigiri, four pieces of sashimi, four pieces California Roll, a spicy tuna hand roll, and miso and salad for $12.95. The fish is fresh and it's a great deal. This isn't the place to go if you want inventive and creative sushi, but it is the place to go for some good, basic sushi in the neighborhood. Other good things are the gyoza, hamachi hand roll, and tuna and seaweed salad. -

The menu is overall economically priced though the portion size, namely the amount of fish I got in my chirashi, may have reflected it. Still I saw the quality is not bad. It's actually just right for a smaller appetite or if you want to spread your appetite to other items. Like me, I had room for a yellowtail roll and to try out some mackerel nigiri sushi with no problem. The waitress the evening that I went (last Sunday) was very nice and pleasant also.

Something terrible happened to the management of this place in the last couple of months. The reliable, speedy delivery is a thing of the past. They were very late on a delivery with no explanation other than "we're busy," and even worse, there was absolutely no offer to discount the order even though we were regular customers. We won't be ordering from them again.

I really hate to do this, but I'm going to 'out' Sake Zone because my coworkers and I ordered for delivery from them today, and one of my friends found some sort of BUG floating in her salad dressing after she ate her salad! YUCKKKKK! I work in a lab and we looked at it under the microscope...ewwwwwwww. To me it looked like a flea. In any case, eat here at your own risk!

The restaurant is very nice. It is chinese owned with chinese karaoke background music. That should always be a sign that it will not be good. We were the only ones here during lunch time. They really need to change it up. If you are going to open a Japanese restauarant and deck it out with japanese decor, then play some Japanese music. They spend a good chunk of money on remodeling the place. It looks very nice.
The service is good. The food, on the other hand, taste like fast food Japanese food. Taste sorta like costco sushi.
We ordered some rolls to share
kani roll ........................below average
spicy tuna roll.............does not taste fresh
california roll...............pieces are really small
I took pictures of the sushi so please feel free to check them out
We ordered tempura udon, 2 ramen with chasu, and I had the lunch special sushi which is 6 pieces of nigiri and a california roll.
They only had one ramen left so my brother had to have the soba. This place is affordable but the food is below average.
Might be good for those who are on a budget and need to get their fixin on some japanese food. -

Okay "foodies": don't go here for sushi. Do not order teriyaki anything. And stay as far away as you can from the spicy tuna rolls. I'd stick with cooked foods...
That being said, it's edible... The food is one and a half stars, but unlike virtually every other "Japanese" place in the City, they deliver -- not just to go, but free delivery. If you're looking for quick delivery in the neighborhood during this super rainy season, it sure as hell beats Pizza Craptastica down the street.
I'm being generous with the three stars cos they're good people and hopefully, they'll survive. -
Review from Julia Z.
This might be the shortest review I've had in a while but when the food is this bland, I really don't have much to say. The rolls were tasteless but what's worse, it was made with PLAIN (and mushy!) rice. When I go out for sushi rolls, I want SUSHI rice on them.
They also had the nastiest uni I ever tasted. It was bitter and tasted old. I wasn't expecting the best quality here but I was hoping it would be at least decent. I guess I was hoping for too much. I'm not even sure it was safe to eat. Thank goodness I didn't blow chunks that night!
Only positives are that the place was very clean and the service was nice. You also get a free fried roll of some sort if you order $30 or more. But I say life is too short to eat nasty sushi. -

Not a sushi person myself, but enjoy the other Japanese food offerings...so decided to visit Sake Zone. Honestly, we were going to go next door to Tai Shan, but it just never looks clean. We used to like BubbleZone, the old Taiwanese place that was previously in this location...so we decided to give Sake Zone a try.
Not sure why they call themselves sake zone, as I didn't see any Sake anywhere. I think it's supposed to be called sushi zone. But like I said, I don't do sushi.
1st we tried an appetizer of fried tofu. It was 4 large pieces of tofu that were lightly breaded and fried...for maybe a second. This allows the outside to get a little crisp while the inside still remains soft warm tofu. It sits in a sauce consisting mainly of soy sauce and green onions. It was very good.
For entrees we both tried Japanese curry dishes. Why is curry popular in japan? Well I wondered that and found this: "Curry has been known in Japan for almost 150 years, but has only been a staple since about 1931. The Lonely Planet World Food Japan book recounts some of the history of curry in Japan. One of a group of Satsuma military officials who were traveling to France on a French warship in 1863 watched some Indian passengers cooking what was described as "aromatic mud." During the Meiji period, Japan opened up to the West, and curry is one of the items that flowed in. Initially, curry rice was a luxury food, probably because of its foreign and exotic nature. In 1931 the British company Crosse & Blackwell began selling a mass-produced curry rice mix in Japan that became a great success, and by the early 1980s the average household ate almost 2 kg of curry mix each year."
Interesting.
Anyway, it was delicious! Spicy, aromatic and lovely.
What else did I like about Sake Zone: The prices are so reasonable. 2 entries, an appetizer, tea, and tip was total for $25!
What I didn't like:
1)They still have a Bubblezone sign in the place! Hello?
2) TV was playing ABC tv, with the Nanny show. Come on, play some authentic Japanese tv show or drama...add some ambiance!
3) service was slow...only 3 other tables but the food came out slow. But it was well prepared, so we didn't mind.
Overall, a nice experience and glad we visited! -

Went there with kids for a quick bite.
The waiter was nice, but she forgot to add the very first item I asked for to the order. So my younger was taking the place apart waiting for his cucumber roll. It's their loss, really. When I asked again, they quickly made it and gave us one more free roll - the tempura fried tuna roll.
The sushi tasted good, not really melting-in-your-mouth good, but decent. The rice was a bit bland but after wasabi any rice would taste bland. Everything but that cucumber roll was good and timely. ON the other hand, we were the only customers at the time so I don't know how they handle crowds.
What else?... The chef was a woman - I mention it because it was the first time I ever saw one. I know they give you a free sake when your order exceeds $30 or so. They tolerate kids quite well and serve beer.
Will come again for budget sushi solution. -

Tried this place out for dinner one weekend up in the city and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't know what to expect because my bff chose this place for dinner after her wedding rehearsal. Since this place is small, we pretty much had the whole restaurant for the wedding party, which was really nice.
They brought each table a bowl of edamame to munch on while we waited for our food. The food took a while but that's not really their fault because they had to cook for our big party all at once so at least we had snacks. They also brought out these fried sushi rolls which are excellent. I ordered the beef teriyaki bento box which was wayy more than I could finish because they also give you california rolls and tempura. I want to try the fish next time because it looks really yummy. I would for sure come here again when my adventures bring me back to SF and I'm craving delicious japanese food. -

It's cold. It's fricking cold. I needed soup. Good soup. Delivered hot.
Sake Zone delivered.
I can't speak for the sushi but they delivered a mondo sized order of Nabe Udon hot and delicious. Maybe Nabe means for 'kitchen sink' as it had everything - chicken, tofu, veggies, fish cake, shrimp, tempura, egg and loads of big udon noodles. Yay! The broth, noodles and tempura came separate too so nuthin got squishy and I have enough for lunch tomorrow. Go team Sake Zone! You are my new go-to for it's-too-cold and I need-soup-now! -

The food is just OK. No complaints on the Bento boxes or the cooked rolls, though the Hamachi I had once wasn't the freshest. The portions are better than average. Prices are competitive.
But they offer some enticements to return.
- Each time we went we had over 6 people and they would offer free "Tekka" (some rice with tuna in the center in a mildly spicy sauce). Free edename, too.
-Also they have been doing a promotion, eat over $100 you get a $10 gift card.
Parking on this part of Clement isn't as bad as between Arguello and 10th Ave. That is a big plus especially in the Richmond.
My mom and sister really like this place, but they are mainly bento box eaters. Not sushi experts. -

3.5 stars, I round up. =D
Came here last night for dinner. I've been here a few times already, but my first review on yelp. So far, my dining experience here has been consistent - the food is above average and filling.
I had the three entree bento box ($10.95 for three entrees - awesome). It came with beef teriyaki, tuna sashimi and shrimp/ veggie tempura. 90% of beef teriyaki was good, but last bit of it was chewy and rubbery. the tuna sashimi was fresh, although there have been instances where it wasn't. The tempura is above average - crispy with a light batter. I always seem to get tempura even though I tell myself not to.
Considering the fact that the restaurant was only 30% full, the food took fairly long to come out. Other than that, the waitress was nice and attentive. My tea glass was always full.
Overall, you get what you paid for here. It's not overpriced, and the food is better than Kiki's. Some of the reviews are right on about the mushy sushi rice (occasionally) and the "not that fresh" sashimi (occasionally). It's a hit or miss I guess. I say this place is consistent as I only order the bento boxes. -

They have really good priced dinner bento boxes! AND it actually tastes good! Who woulda ever thunk that was possible. i did come on like a Friday night and it was pretty dead, so the service was pretty excellent. The sushi was also decent (in both taste and price). I think I need to come here a few more times before I can decide whether or not to add another star. For some reason I'm skeptical when it comes to Japanese restaurants.

My friends and I were actually trying to go the Taiwanese place next store, but because they were so busy, we ended up here.
They still had the Grand Opening sign up, and besides the staff, no one else was in there. But we decided to take a chance since the menu looked pretty good, and we were really hungry.
The decor is nice, good service and the prices were resonable. The dinner bento for 3 items was really nice. They have a good selection to pick from. I got the salmon sashimi, chicken katsu, and tuna roll. The salmon was tasty and sliced in pretty thick chunks.
Overall, the dining experience went really well. I don't know why they didn't have any customers dining in on a Saturday night. My only conclusion is because is that business name Sake Zone leads people to believe they serve little to no food and only sake.
Given the price and food quality, I will definitely come here again. -

I found this place by accident and really enjoyed it. They had nice decor, good service, and the prices were really reasonable. Dinner combo was good with three items to choose from at $10.95. If I lived near by, I would probably frequent it more often. We had some nigiri and they were tasty as well and again reasonably priced with the average at around $3.00 for two pieces. We were also given a free Tekka Fried, deep fried tuna roll as advetized on their take out menu with purchase of $20.00 or more for dinner.
I constantly look for bargains, and I can tell you this is one of them. Good Eats. -

It used to be Sake House on California near 5th Ave. When they moved they took over the spot where Bubble Zone was. I guess they thought they would do a hybrid.
I like the place; friendly service, lots of tea etc. The food is pretty good but as one reviewer noted it isn't totally consistent. Sometimes the sashimi is excellent and sometimes a bit bland. For Japanese food it's fairly priced with good portions.
I would give it a thumbs up. -

I ordered take out from here a few days ago and I pretty much enjoyed it. I ordered a lunch bento with the pork katsu and chicken terriyaki ($6.95 came out to be $7.61 after tax) for take out. So it came with miso soup, 4 pieces of california rolls, and a green salad. The portion was just so-so, not too small, but enough to make you full. I don't like the katsu sauce, but the katsu was crispy and tasty. I would say everything tasted good. I really enjoyed it, and I'll definitely go back.

The people are nice and the place looks swank. But the food was not good at all.
My wife, son, and I ordered a the bento combo, sashimi, and (2) of their creation rolls. None of it tasted good. The fish was poor quality, and the rolls were either too spicy or it didn't taste good at all. The sashimi was the worst quality of fish I have ever tasted.
The bento box was the saving grace. At least here you are offered a decent selection. And the food tasted ok. Although the chicken tonkatsu was a disaster.
The only reason I give them 2 stars is for the waitresses who work hard but are held back because of the poor kitchen management (food taking a long time) and poor food tastes. -

I signed up for a yelp account just so I could give this place a BAD review.
Keep in mind, I work at a sushi restaurant and know what good, fresh sushi tastes like. and this place was NOT.
I ordered here because it was the only place I could find mochi ice cream and it was close.
I ordered beef teriyaki (not fully cooked with a lot of fatty pieces.. only reason I ate more than 4 bites was because I was starving and i covered it in teriyaki sauce)
I ordered a deep fried spicy tuna roll (crazy roll) and the concept is great... even the spicy sauce on top was good.. but it was hardly deep fried and the tuna was not fresh at all. one of the worst rolls I have ever tasted... which scares me to think of what their other rolls are like.
Now... the mochi. It was THE WORST mochi I have ever had in my life!!!! I literally just ate the ice cream out of the "rice cake" it was so awful... it was thick, not sticky.... tasted like it had been taken out of a box (which granted, most places do I think... but this stuff was just terrible)
I am not even that picky of an eater... but seriously this stuff was AWFUL!!!!
maybe if you want some rice or miso soup... or some sake bombs. but stay away from the food, yuck. -

I'm very picky about my Japanese food. I want it to taste authentic, not something that someone just sprinkled on kikoman teriyaki sauce! Sake Zone is anything but that! They have the best tempura ever! Perfectly fried and perfectly floured! Come over here for good deals too. They have bento boxes for only 10 bucks FILLED with food. They're generous with their portions. Fave sushi: Spicy Girl Roll.

i visited this place with some family and we all thought it was very nicely done up. the food is prepared by a chef who had worked 20 plus years at a japanese place then decided to open up his own place. family run. the food came quickly and was very appetizing. the tempera was not greasy and too fried. the sushi was flavorful and the teriaki did not get soaked in sauce so you actually can taste the meat. bento boxes were very reasonably priced for all that it came with it. i will definitely take friends and re-visit Sake Zone which used to be Bubble Zone before.

This sushi restaurant is not a hip trendy place like Tsunami but it is a good deal for the price. I'd say that it is one of the more affordable sushi restaurants that I've been to in the area. Considering I eat a lot of sushi, I'm always on the look out for cheaper sushi restaurants. The dinner bento box is only $10.99. The tempura was crispy and awesome. I also enjoyed the specialty rolls. One of them (spider roll, I think) had avocado on top with some sweet cream sauce carefully placed on each piece with tobiko sprinkled on top which was yummy. For someone like me who loves sushi but can't afford to frequent the more expensive and top sushi restaurants in the city, this place will really help with satisfying sushi fixes. Plus they deliver! Too bad I don't live in the city anymore. Overall, I had a very enjoyable meal here. Sure, I've had better but I've also had worse and this place is just right for the frequent sushi eater like me.
