The husband and I were in the area and decided that we wanted sushi. I am always a little hesitant to try new sushi places (food poisoning, cleanliness..); especially because I have a very sensitive digestive system. We drove around the Clairemont area for about ten minutes trying to decide where we would stop for lunch. We saw Sushi Sake and decided to take a chance on it.  We didn't really have time to yelp the place as it was a last minute decision. I was pleasantly surprised at how clean the establishment was. They also had pretty modern furniture and a fish tank to distract my three year old from causing a scene.
First let me say that I am picky as all hell and am something of a sushi whore (I could probably eat it every day).  My husband ordered the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls and he loved them. I sampled a piece of both rolls and loved them as well!! The fish tasted so clean and really fresh. My food took a little longer to come out as I had ordered the bento box with short ribs. OHHHH EMMMM GHEEE!!! I LOVE the salad dressing. And this is coming from a girl who thinks greens are only meant for rabbits. Only other place that rivals this dressing is Yummy Sushi on Coronado Island. The meat was cooked perfectly and had plenty of sauce, very flavorful. They also give you a good amount of tempura to go with and the dipping sauce is tasty too. Not bland like other places I've been too.  Husband also ordered a large house sake and our bill was under $30!!! We will definitely be coming back!! VERY IMPRESSED with the food and service.

    TIPS:
-Check for the rolls that are $1.00 off
-Parking is a little cramped as there are a number of establishments in the same plaza. May need to park on the street.

    This is our regular spot.

The sashimi is consistently excellent.  The rolls are clever and ever-changing.  But the Lemon Roll made with actual lemon peel is by far the most amazing.

This is a real sushi lover's spot.  Other exotics include amaebi, the freshest uni, monk fish liver, and several types of oysters.  All this at very reasonable prices.

Love ya, Sake Sushi!  Don't ever change.

This place was really my first big experience with sushi. While I've had others since this (some better, alot worse) this place will hold a special place for me. The owner is extremely friendly and helpful; on more than one occasion I've gotten free Saki just by chatting him up. I can really only recall a few times where the place has been busy, so the service is usually fast.

Now that I've tried different sushi bars, I do have to say that the quality here is not top shelf, although it's still good. I've also found it's a good deal, especially when they have deals (usually weekly). It's a good entry level sushi place if your interested in trying it out, but aren't quite ready to break the bank!

Love this place, quick service, clean, friendly waitresses, and the food is good. i had the Hamachi Kama, not the best i ever had but still good.
i was going to try sushi deli 3, but was told the wait was 30 minutes, the music was loud, and the place crowded and smelled like a bar.
no thanks, Sake Sushi is just what i need after a long hard day at work.
the waitresses are so friendly, and speak with the cutest Vietnamese accent, i know what your thinking, but try it just once, i don't think you will be disappointed, unless your rich and money is no object.
Rainbow Roll, Salmon Skin Hand Roll, Spicy Scallop Hand Roll, Cucumber Salad, and Hamachi Kama, yum yum.

Sushi .. oh how I love thee. If I can taste the moon and the stars, it's probably the same taste as my ultimate favorite ... sushi. If it's not, I'll go to Sake Sushi and have them roll me up some :)

Monkey Balls! Yes, I said it ... monkey balls. This is one of my favorite food here. It melts in your mouth and you think that's all it is but then the spices comes in contact, more so, bursting in your palate. Then if you want an orgasmic finale, top it off with wasabi. Yum :P

Their bento boxes are also fantastic. My most favorite of them all is the Steak Rib. It also comes with rice, 4 california rolls,  6 vegetable tempura, and thier version of salad (Thier salad is probably the only thing I don't like in this place) for $8.99!

Their specialty rolls are fantastically fresh and awesome to my taste buds. The classic Rainbow Roll is so fresh I usually eat 2 of them in one sitting :)

Can't you tell already, I LOVE FOOD!!! It's the best thing since life existed :) and Sake Sushi ... I'm so happy you are in my life!

I have passed this place quite a few times and I finally decided to try.

I will start off with the good news first:
It wasnt busy, there was plenty of parking, the waitress was friendly, service was fast and their miso soup was delicious!

Their sushi wasnt that great. I ordered their spicy salmon roll (tempura fried). It was supposed to come with spicy mayo and eel sauce, the eel sauce tasted more like teriyaki sauce and the fish didnt taste too fresh and to be honest, I dont think it was salmon. It didnt have the taste of it nor did it look like it. It looked more like tuna. They werent as cheap as I hoped they would be either. I paid 19.00 for a roll, miso soup and an ice tea. I spent less money elsewhere for better sushi.

Would I be back again? Probably not.

First of all I am a huge sushi fan and I would have to say that Sake Sushi is quite possibly my favorite sushi place in the Clairemont/Convoy area.  I like how the rolls aren't cut into huge pieces (3"+ in diameter) so that I can eat it with one bite.

Basically everything I have had there tastes great and the prices are reasonable.  The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was because sometimes the service just plain sucks.  On several occasions I have had to wait 10+ minutes to see my waitress to get my check.  They weren't busy (maybe 3 tables of people there), she was just playing with her smart phone.  Not cool.  So if service consistently improves I will adjust my rating accordingly.

Their bento boxes are definitely a good deal. They give you a lot of tempura, their salad dressing is yummy, and their california rolls are good too. I had the chicken yakisoba and my boyfriend tried the beef bulgogi. We both loved our meals! We will definitely be back.

The descriptions of their speciality rolls sound wonderful, look wonderful and present wonderfully.

Then the moment of truth...I take a bite and...am feeling the big let down.  The portions are great and relatively cheap but the quality is equal to what you would get at your local Ralph's (sorry Ralph's).

Today I had lunch at Sake.  I ordered the tonkatsu bento lunch plate.

What I got was the sole to an old pair of hiking boots that I ditched after my hike to Half Dome in April 2004...battered and fried (literally and figuratively), decorated nicely with a dash of green onions.  I think the sauce was made of the mud they scraped off the bottom of the boots.  Blech.

Salad dressing was watered down, the California roll rice was slightly dry, as was the side of rice that goes with the tonkatsu rubber sole.

    Maybe dinner is better?!

My wife and I love our sushi, and Sake Sushi is our favorite sushi restaurant.

The atmosphere is very nice with plenty of seating. It has a family atmosphere where you won't have to try to talk over the TV, music, or the people sitting next to you.

Parking can be a bit of an issue depending on the time of day.

I have always recieved respectful and courteous service from the friendly staff.  Ming (the owner) even visits with customers to make sure everything is good.

Definately worth a little drive if you have to.

Monkey balls. Baked salmon roll. Soft shell crab. Hairy salmon. Pretty much everything is good on the menu. I really enjoyed the monkey balls, though, mostly because I've never had anything like it.

I would come back here for the rolls and udon noodles.

Affordable sushi! Lemon roll is sooo yummy!!! They ALWAYS have uni unless that big vietnamese group of men ate it all!! Im not kidding!! its funny.. almost everytime we go, they eat all the good stuff I want to eat! :)

Edamame comes right when you sit down.. :) Never that busy, we always sit at the bar and chat it up with the sushi chef. Nice man.. Fast and good service. Just tell him what you want and he can even make it randomly for you. Small place but really good quality sushi.

Will definitely continue to come here!!

The decor and ambiance is nice but the service is slow (probably because the people working there may be mentally slow), and the food is mediocre.

We had the caterpillar roll (which was fine but nothing special, though it's pretty difficult to mess up something so intrinsically tasty), nabeyaki udon (which tasted as it should, though the portion was small for the price), a teriyaki and tempura bento box (half of which was tolerable and the other half, straight-up nasty), and another fusion roll (which was bland).

The prices were standard but given the quality of the food, I still think we were kind of ripped off.

Since we came here for lunch, it could be possible that dinner at the sushi bar could provide a more pleasant experience (and I say this judging from other reviews), but I won't be coming back here to find out.  Finally, let it be said that this place caters to fans of Asian fusion and Americanized rolls, so if you're looking for authentic, high-quality sushi, don't come here.

I'm giving 4 stars for what it is: good sushi for cheap. NOT comparing to Harney or Yu-Me-Ya or else it would get 2 or 3 stars. Let me explain:

Usually, I do sushi only on "going out" nights, date nights, etc. However, this place became a weeknight thing when we lived in the area. Casual, cheap and consistently good.

Rolls are pretty typical but always really good. We'd get 3 or 4 rolls, edamame, and sake and a large Sapporo and our bill would never be more than 50 bucks. Not bad for decent sushi and drinks!

Go here if you're in the area and want some good, quick sushi for little $. And try the monkey balls!

I really really wanted to like this place.  I really did.  It was a sushi place walking distance from my house.  I tried to be open minded since I have recently graduated from eating mostly americanized Japaneses food to eating more traditional LIGHT Japanese food (sushi ota is my go to place for that).

I had time for a a quick lunch to go and I picked up a sesame chicken meal.  The dressing on the salad seemed off (bland?), the chicken was overcooked and the breading was way too hard.  For the price I wouldn't come back again.

I haven't tried any of their rolls or sashimi, but this was the worse food experience from a place that costs a decent amount in a long while.

This is the best sushi restaurant in the area, and trust me, we've tried them all. We usually sit at the sushi bar where the chefs are helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. The explain the ingredients, and since we're so comfortable asking questions, we've even tried some things we never had the nerve to before like uni, that's sea urchin. It was odd. Sometimes the sushi chefs give us free samples of things too, and who doesn't love free tasty bites??

The rolls are excellent, the beer and saki is cheap during happy hour, and many popular rolls are half-off all the time. My hubby's fave is the dragon roll which, if you like eel, is excellent and has lots of tasty, smoky eel on top. Other good ones are the amazing roll, and the Las Vegas roll which takes the healthy out of a typical sushi experience since it's deep-fried, but it's soooo good. It has a spicy kick and all sorts of flavors exploding at once. Other standards are presented well, and the sashimi sampler platter is really big for the price.

For the first time, we went on a Saturday night with friends and the vibe was totally different than our typical week-night experience at the bar. It was loud, fun, and packed. No wait, but Sake Sushi was pretty near to capacity. There were folks of all ages, and a large party added to the boisterous atmosphere. There were even families with kids which is pretty cool, it's really a neighborhood restaurant for everyone!

I encourage anyone in the area (or from farther than Clairemont since it's just off the 805) to try it. It's just as good (if not better) as the pretentious sushi restaurants but at a much better price, and with a friendlier attitude. Sake Sushi is great, and it seems our friends and neighbors think so too!

Went here for dinner with my fiance last Friday.

    Decent Sushi, Average Prices.

Service was pretty attentive, probably because the restaurant was practically empty.

We ordered a teriyaki bento box, crunchy roll, and a spicy crispy tuna roll. The bento box was big but stay away from the miso soup! The waitress seemed almost offended that I only had a few sips of it but seriously it looked like dirty dish water and tasted awful!!!! The rolls were pretty good, but kind of pricey for this kind of place.

I'd probably come back again only for the rolls.

A typical order for my wife and I when eating Sushi includes Edimame, Cali Rolls, and a Rainbow Roll.

The food and service get a 3 star because it really is a hit or miss depending on who's working. Sometimes you get a friendly smile, and other times it's impatience. Some days you get your food fast, and others leave us scratching our heads. The edimame has been good, but more often than not it's soggy and not fresh.

If I were to base the rating solely on the comfort of the chairs, Sake Sushi would receive a -7 star. The seats are everything but ergonomic. ha ha.

Other than that, we've been here several times because it's only a couple of blocks away from where we live, and to say the least, we enjoy the food and atmosphere and will continue to dine at Sake Sushi.

Slightly more expensive then I'm accustomed to paying for the same rolls at my favorite Sushi Loco down in Chula Vista- but I think due to the location of the restaurant and the high rent that factors a bit into the price.

Otherwise, their food was good.  Main complaint is my rolls always fall apart - I typically order the Spicy Rainbow Roll (kudos since they make it with Spicy Tunas instead of the California Roll) and a Spicy Scallop roll.  The Spicy Scallop roll has a LOT of scallops but without fait it's always falling apart.  The Rainbow Roll is probably by far one of the best rolls I've tried with Sake Sushi.

If you live in the neighborhood and you need a sushi fix then it's worth it - they certainly don't skimp.  I always order ahead and pick up and it's ready in 10 minutes or less - always before I arrive.

After realizing this place was here the other day, and being a Clairemont local, we had to come try this place.  I had the chicken teriyaki bento box and it was GOOD and a very reasonable price. The chicken was so good, nice and flame grilled kinda tasting, also came with miso soup, salad (with super good dressing), veggie tempura, and 4 pieces of cali roll All of which was super good.  My bf had one of the entrees that came with tons of sushi as well as a red snapper for the main dish.  Our other friend had the chicken katsu entree that was also Very good which also came with the same sushi.  All of the food tasted very Fresh, a must especially when it comes to sushi.  This is definitely gonna be our local spot for Japanese food:)

The place was alright nice chairs I guess hahha.  The waiter seemed annoyed of her job and acted like she didn't want to deal with us big turn off.  We asked about their special and she didn't know and just said ummmmm for like 5mins!  The food was decent, pretty good spicy tuna but that's it. Decent food + bad service =2 stars. Not coming back!

This is the closest sushi place that I have found to my home, so I am determined to like it.  I have dined in on several occasions and have always had great service...ambiance is nice but still casual.

I find it strange that their printed menu has fixed discounts on everything (50% off rolls, 20% off sashimi etc...).  I advise everyone to bring a calculator or be prepared to do some serious mental math!!

I do not reccomend their sashimi, as every time I have tried it it has been very thick and never cut into the delicate, buttery texture that I love.  The Vegas roll is quite good and I'm not sure you can get a cheaper Cali roll in all of Cali ($2.50)!!

I will go back when I have a craving for sushi and want some take out...if I have the time to sit down I will most likely make the trek to PB for my favorite Zen 5.

I went to Sake Sushi for the first time when I found out that Sammy Sushi in Kearny Mesa was closed indefinitely. I got take out (as usual), and waited only 15 minutes to pick up my food.

I was impressed by  the quality of the sushi, but it didn't seem to be anything special. I got the Spicy Tuna Roll and the Kelly Roll (crab inside, yellowtail and salmon roe outside), as well as some sashimi and gyoza. The gyoza was a little undercooked, but tasty inside. The rolls seemed fresh, but didn't really hit me as "amazing"

This place would get 4 stars if it weren't for the prices. It is definitely overpriced considering what you get.

there are 2 tiers of good sushi restaurants in San Diego: pricey good sushi...and cheap good sushi.  obviously the "good" in each type is adjusted based on that structure.  as a relatively affordable sushi option, I would definitely call Sake Sushi a good choice.

Located in a Clairemont strip mall this place is surprisingly inviting and classy.  I thought it was well decorated and I enjoyed the high back chairs....very comfy!

Sure, the grand opening sign should be taken down by now and the discounts are humorous to any relatively intelligent person who can clearly see it's original price is a mark up.  But people, people...this is being done everywhere.  Ever look behind the sale tags in grocery and merchandise stores?  The price underneath is usually the same exact price! They know people are attracted deals and use it to their advantage.  Whatevs dude...they just tryin to make it in this tough ol' world B-)

I went wuss for the night and got a bento box.  $7.50 for the chicken teriyaki meal that comes with a good amount of chicken, rice, a salad, 4 cali rolls, a handful of vegetable tempura and miso soup....what generous portions for the price!  I mean I couldn't even finish the whole thing.  We also got the spicy tuna roll and a dragon roll.  Spicy tuna was good...dragon roll was a bit much.  I'm fine with a little eel but this was like a whole eel on top of the rolls.  I did appreciate the artistry of the dragon concept.  It was really fun to look at.  I will say to pass on their edimame...it was not cooked properly.

Overall, very impressed by the quality and quantity of food for the price and location.  The service was good as well.  We were treated warmly and everything was brought out quick.  I'll be back!  Probably for lunch next time.

Hmmm... not particularly impressed by this place.  The only reason I tried it out was because they had a big sign out front that said "1/2 off sushi rolls."  I ordered the crunchy roll and some dumplings to go.  I think I paid something like.. $10-12?  For that price, I guess it's OK.  But the "crunchy" pieces on my roll weren't the right texture (I've had some really good crunchy rolls), and the tempura inside wasn't that great either.. not crunchy enough, or something.  The dumplings were good (I forget what they're called in japanese).  I'll most likely go somewhere else when I'm craving sushi.

The restaurant was nearly empty, but we still waited forever for our food. The server had trouble taking our order because she couldn't understand us, even though we were just saying a number.

My main issue is the food-- the roll I got looked strange, tasted bland, and the ingredients did not taste very fresh.  The udon I tried was a bit flavorful, but not horrible.  My friend's catepillar roll was somewhat decent, so I'm giving two stars instead of one.

I've had plenty of good sushi, some bad sushi, and this was some of the worst sushi I've ever tasted.  I got the sushi 50% off, and I still did not feel like it was worth the price.

Considering it's in Clairemont Mesa, I am pretty impressed. There are several mediocre sushi places located in the clairemont mesa/kearny mesa area, but this one i think is the best.

The prices were not super cheap, but not crazy expensive either. That's the price you pay for quality sushi! Not the crap sushi you order at teri cafe and get food poisoning later - i learned my lesson: never order sushi at a restaurant if it's not their specialty. I'll stick to their ramen.

With all that said, good sushi, nice decor, clean and the staff were super nice.

Definitely worth a visit! If you're a sushi snob (nothing wrong with that!) I'd stick to Sushi Ota in PB :P

This was my third time going and the other two times weren't too bad, but last night earned the 2 stars.  I went with my boyfriend and we ordered edamame, which was super overcooked, a crunchy roll, and a hairy salmon roll.  The crunchy roll was pretty soggy and didn't taste all that good.  The hairy salmon roll tasted super fishy and i actually didn't even want to finish it.  The prices are pretty steep for the quality of sushi and I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon.  There are so many great sushi restaurants in San Diego that are much better than Sake.

really likes this place. Had a great little menu. Four of us ate here and stuffed ourselves on $65! We didn't have any drinks though, just food.

Came here over the summer when it had just opened recently. A group of friends wanted to go for the 50% off roll special. I ordered the soft shell crab roll. It seems pretty standard at other places i've been too, but it was a little different here. It was alright, paid what I would at other restaurants. The tables made the restaurant seem more high -end. Probably wouldn't go back again as there didn't really seem to be anything particularly special and the prices are only slightly less then other places with the 50% off (which apparently is still going on, saw the sign still posted the other week)

finally managed to go down and give this place a try.  the place isn't bad but neither is it impressive.  i have to say it's the first and only vietnamese owned sushi house i've been to (not that it makes a difference).

we went for lunch during the weekday and there was only one other family inside.  i have to admit we were lured in by the 50% banner that has been hanging outside for week - but as we assumed, it was too good to be true.  the prices for sushi (and for the menu in general) were a bit higher than what they were worth.  quality was alright - i didn't spit anything out into my napkin.  the rolls were creative but they were similar types of rolls you would find at any mediocre sushi restaurant.  basically a variation between crunchy covered, california rolls with cream cheese or something of the sort.

the nigiri was alright.  the service wasn't bad.  i just wasn't wowed by the place and i felt like i paid much more than i should have.  the bento boxes looked alright but even with those, there seemed to be a catch of some sort (lunch special posted only applied to korean shortribs; everything else was standard price).

the decor was clean and new but again- nothing too impressive.  i probably wouldn't come back again nor would i recommend it.  there are definitely better places to go for sushi at that price and quality.

A friend who lives in UTC likes this place and took me here a couple of times.  The atmosphere is very comfortable and not over-crowded.  The sushi is good, and I remember the dragon roll being very good -- a personal fav.  I would definitely go back.

After sushi beach boys closed ( why ?? i miss them!!!) I have been looking for a good sushi place in clairemont. I went into  this place, and thought maybe it could fill in that place. It was ok, turns out  if you want to get the boxs you have to go in before a certain time, and thats what i always get. I had the cali roll, which was pretty damn good. I think i will be back to try more.

If you only read one sentence of this review - don't eat here!

If you want more reasons, please continue one.... I prefer bullet points,

    - pulling into the parking lot you see there is also a "Caskets for Less" business in the same strip mall (sign #1 not to eat here, ignored)
    - 50% off "Grand Opening" banner (sign #2 not to eat here, ignored)
    - all empty tables still had uncleared plates from diners on them, even though they had been gone a while (sign #3 not to eat here, ignored)

Since I ignored common sense and STILL decided to give it a try, here is what ensued.

    - First of all, the 50% off and 20% off pricing is a clear scheme. This place has been open nearly a year, so nothing is Grand about it anymore. to make matters worse, most prices have been inflated on the menu using white-out, and THEN discounted. For example the menus were printed with $5 California rolls, but then whited out and relisted as $8 but 50% off. Almost all rolls are way overpriced, so the 50% off seems good - it's NOT.
    - If you are over 65 years old, you may not want to eat here, because you may be dead by the time your food comes. At least you can stop by the Caskets for Less as you wait. Another table literally came and sat after us, ate and was finished before we received anything. The waitress said that since it came from the kitchen it was much faster. This was 40 minutes after we ordered, so I politely (I think) asked for her to just bring our sushi out as it was ready, not all at once. Truth be told, nothing was even started as she didn't bring anything out.
    - by the time we finished eating, NOT A SINGLE PLATE was cleared by the waitress. It was a mess, we had to stack plates in order to still have room. Terrible service.
    - water was only refilled after asking (20 minutes after we had 4 empty water cups)

I will NEVER go back.  If you like sushi you shouldn't go either. If you was sushi and a casket, this may be your only choice, so go.

Otherwise go to Ota, Hane, or Taka and you can't go wrong. This was a bad call for me an I knew better. Don't make the same mistake.
