It was a rainy day in San Francisco yesterday. There was even thunder and lightning! Because we wanted to stay nice and warm, my friend and I tried to find some nearby restaurants that delivered. Sake House has a $10 minimum for deliveries. Not bad!

We placed our order and the food we delivered in about 30 minutes! Perfection. I ordered the Chef's Dinner Bento w/ the California roll, chicken teriyaki and tempura combo (shrimp & veggies). My friend ordered the Chef's Dinner Bento as well but w/ the California roll, salmon teriyaki and gyoza. Their servings are a pretty good size. The California rolls were kind of small though. The Bento meals came w/ a salad and miso soup.

I ate about half of my meal, digested and ate the rest a few hours later. My food was pretty good. My friend said her salmon was good, but she couldn't really taste the teriyaki part of it.

Oh! And they gave us a gift! A nifty little roll up calendar. I wasn't expecting that.

There are gems on California street, just one block away from Clement.

Sake House was close to a place we happened to be this afternoon, and the restaurant I originally wanted to eat at had a waiting line.  So we dropped in here!

The crew was Japanese, but they didn't give us all the Japanese "irasshai mase" treatment.  They just gave us a couple of menus and politely took our order.  They had paper lamps hung out front, the traditional Edo curtain over the kitchen doorway, nice benches and pillows, and an honest attempt to hang Japanese art on the walls.  Some Japanese businessmen balked when some Chinese sign out front gave them doubts.  It's OK, guys, the Japanese here are American anyway.

They had a sake rack in the back of the dining room, and sushi station on the left as we walked in the door.  The menu featured all kinds of sushi, a large selection of bento boxes, and at least five dinner features.  We chose two of the dinner features for $8.99 each.  She went for tempura, and I chose tonkatsu.  Mmmmm... fried food!  Both dinner specials included soup, salad, California roll, rice, and tea.  Because we had ordered more than $15 worth, the restaurant sprung a surprise choice of a free tekka maki or a free cup of sake.  The total for the evening, including tip, was about $24.

This was good solid fare, comparable to Sanraku in the Metreon.

Bottom line:  Will we come back?  Yes, it's now on our list of places to go.

I may have just found a solution to my rapidly-expanding waistline problem. It's called Sake House. They deliver sushi. TO MY HOUSE. (well, Matt's house, but my house is only a stone's throw away so they'd probably deliver there, too). Now, friends, I will never order another large pepperoni pizza and side of extra-fried mozzarella sticks and eat every last bite, alone in the dark while I watch chick flicks and cry and wipe the melted chocolate off of my chin ever again. OK, I won't make promises we know I can't keep.

Tonight we ordered from Sake House and I was more than happy with our order. I had miso soup, wakame salad, and a california roll. The miso soup was light and not nearly as salty as I've come to expect it to be, and full of silky tofu and greens. The wakame was well seasoned and had a healthy dash of sesame seeds. The California roll was the real standout, though. For delivery sushi, this was one delicious roll. The crab is real and they're not stingy with the avocado. If it's all you're having though, go ahead and order two.

The Man's chicken terriyaki looked scary but I'm afraid of dark meat, so that may explain it. The fried gyoza are miniature in size but oh-so-delicious. Order some of those, too.  Man's terriyaki also came with salad, miso soup, the gyoza, sashimi, and rice for $10. My roll was $3.50, soup was $1.25, and wakame salad was $3.50. So...for $20, we had enough reasonably healthy food for two people delivered straight to our door in less than half an hour and we live clear over in the Western Addition. Imagine how fast this stuff would arrive if you live in the Richmond.

When I say "reasonably healthy", by the way, I mean NOT a big greasy meat-laden pizza that I may as well just tape to my ass instead of eating because we all know that's where it's going to end up anyway. In any event, it's a great delivery option for when you're all pizza-chinese-and-thai'd out. They just got their newest faithful customer. Now if only there was a weight watchers meeting in the vicinity...

Happy New Year!  There's no better way to start 2009 than with a National Hangover Day review.

My friend and I lay on the couch completely worthless today after properly ringing in 2009, and as we were watching Kung Fu Panda, we got a craving for noodles and dumplings.  (If you saw this movie, you'd understand.)

Determined to get noodles (and to move as little as possible), we settled on udon and researched some places that would satisfy this craving and would deliver.

    Behold!  We found Sake House.

So here is my review for the delivery service:

Delivery was relatively quick, and I was very pleased with the way our food was packaged.  They separated the soup from the noodles/meat/veggies so they wouldn't get soggy/overcooked.  Good thinking!  The udon also came loaded with veggies & an egg in addition to the meat.  In my udon experience, this is not always the case, so that was a win.

To my pleasant surprise, the fried gyoza wasn't soggy!  Not that gyoza should be soggy by default, but more often than not, when I have gotten take out fried food, I've had to rewarm & "recrisp" it in the toaster oven.

The temperature of the food was good too; we didn't need to rewarm it or anything!  Impressive for delivery...

Also, we got a FREE CALENDAR with our order--and it wasn't one of those crappy kind, but a nice Asian bamboo scroll one.  Ahhh, the little things!

The food is also relatively inexpensive.  We saw their lunch menu specials, and you can get a decent meal for under $7!  It's worth checking out the promos, too--I think you can get a free California roll if you order over $25.

So my only "gripe" is that the beef wasn't as high quality as that in other udons I've tried at Japanese restaurants, but I'm giving it 5 stars anyway because any restaurant who can get me delicious udon without me having to leave the house (read: without me having to put on pants) not only warms my body, but warms my soul.

When I heard there was sushi delivery I was shocked, then puzzled, then elated and proud to be an American; Sushi delivery sounds like the greatest thing since martinis in a can. But in the back of your mind you always wonder if something like this is just too good to be true.

It is and it isn't. Sake House does a pretty good job with basic japanese-american fare like teriyaki chicken (they go light on the sauce by default! right on!), california rolls, etc. The wakame is pretty tasty too. However, while the sashimi wasn't bad, it wasn't really anything special either. Still, it's the best sushi I've ever eaten on my couch. Er, second best actually; The take out from Maru-ya beats it by a pretty wide margin.

If you're going out for Japanese there are better options, but for ordering in it's a viable alternative to the usual pizza or chinese, especially since I found out about Hai Sun's health department rating.

When I first entered this place, I ain't gonna lie, I was fo sho skeptical. Probs bc it was *completely* empty when we went in.

But from there, things just continued to get better and better. Bc it was so devoid of people, I obviously took that as a potential foreshadowing of the food we were about to eat. Surprisingly though, the sushi was  pretty good! I also had the vegetable gyoza, which was just the perfect amount of fried.

And even better: if you buy more than $15 worth of food/drinks, you get something free (the choice was between something I don't remember and alcohol). Erm, obvs we chose the alcohol.

So not only is the food shockingly cheap, it is also surprisingly good for the price with an added bonus of free alcohol! Any place that gives me free alcohol is a definite must return in my brain. And return I will...

I want to give this place 3.5 stars, but I can't. 4 stars is really pushing it. So 3 is what they'll get. What I like about the place is that they're consistant. I usually call ahead for a pick-up since the last (and only time) I had delivery from them, it did take close to an hour. The driver did tell me that they were really busy that night. Well, that's fine, but I hate waiting for food for that long and to be blunt, I was STARVING! (There's a fire hydrant near by and if you put on your flashers and run-in, you'll be out in about a minute. Yes, it's a gamble...but what can I say, I live on the edge).

Don't be too intimidated if you don't see anyone inside if you decide to eat in, I think their big selling point is delivery and pick-up. The people in there are really nice and the times I did have to wait for my order, they gave me some green tea (as I nervously peaked out the door time to time to check to see if the parking gestapo was roaming around California St).

The food...it's good. I mean, it's fast food sushi and nothing too creative going on here. I mean, what are your real choices for this type of "to go" sushi? Yup, super market sushi...blech.

Hello. If you live in the Richmond area or remotely close and have a sudden craving for Japanese food and you're  too lazy to leave the house, then you should definitely order from here. Especially for lunch!

Bento lunch box for $6.95 + tax, you can choose 2 of 10 different items; it also comes with a side salad with house dressing, miso soup, & 4 pieces of California roll.  Minimum delivery of $10. Pretty good deal if I say so myself.

I've ordered here twice now at work and they do deliver to CPMC. All I did was fax an order in and called to confirm. Within an hour, I had lunch for my whole department. They also have this handy portable debit machine so you can pay by card on the spot.

    Hope you guys enjoy!

3.5 stars. Four is pushing it, but it was definitely at least a little better than "ok".
After waiting over an hour for my delivery to show up, I was decidedly irate. Hunger does that to me. The delivery person arrived, and was very sweet and apologetic, so I stopped being mad immediately.
I ordered the Nabe Udon, and my comments are similar to the other reviewer who ordered the same thing for delivery. The way they packaged it was AWESOME, kept things from getting soggy. And it was HOT when it arrived, but unfortunately, so was the sashimi that shared the bag. Oh well, it was still very good tasting fish. Much better quality than Kitaro IMHO.

I liked that there were lots of veggies and an egg in the Udon, which I am ALL about. Only bad thing - there was something decidedly weird about the broth. I can't put my finger on it, but it kind of turned me off. And I eat Nabeyaki (Or Nabe) Udon every chance I get, from every establishment that offers it. I like to think I know good Nabe Udon. And this was a little off.  Of course, being ravenous, I finished the whole thing anyway. But the broth is weird.

Sushi quality = good.  They have great prices for sashimi, rolls, and some japanese noodle dishes.  This place is Chinese-run...so they don't have all of the traditional Japanese dishes.

Service = I can't judge about sit-down service, as I've only ordered take-out and delivery.   (This place delivered to my place at least once a week, when I first discovered it...yikes!!)

Presentation and quantity of the food is good.

Unfortunately, I don't live near enough for delivery any more.

And from what I am reading, not sure if I am missing much...

I had it for delivery several months ago. It was great! And the food was fresh, plentyful, and unforgetable. My staff and my wife kept saying we want it again.

So we ordered for take out last night.

First second I walked in there, it was quiet and I was the only customer.... Then the containers were different. Instead of the big round, flat plastic container, they were the Chinese take out containers. The price was comparable to before.

Then the food was disappointing. The sushi rice was sticky. The tuna looked greyish and dry. The amaebi was so so. The sashimi was't fresh. The overall experience was disappointing.

I suspect it has changed ownership since a few months ago. Too bad. For the price I paid, I deserve better food.

Cheap and what you see is what you get! I highly recommend them to anyone who works in the Richmond District. You can check out their menu at http://menupix.com.

    The quick-and-dirty:
Sake House/Zone serves up a pretty solid bowl of udon and I'd give them 3 stars for that.  Add a star for the delivery service -- it's tough to find good Japanese delivery and this joint lives up to the challenge.

    The back-story:
After a Night Not To Remember on New Year's Eve (my friend made some amazing cocktails at the pre-party and I had a few too many, or just the right amount, depending on how you look at it), nothing sounded better than a lazy day on the couch watching movies.  A couple of viewings of Kung Fu Panda later and all we wanted were some bowls of noodles.

So, we searched around online for some delivery and found Sake House (or Sake Zone - they both have the same phone number, so I'm not actually sure which one we ordered from...).  Regardless, this just hit the spot.  We ordered up some udon, delivered right to the front door, allowing us to maximize the time we got to spend with my hangover's best friend, the couch.

Got delivery for dinner on a Sunday night (World Series Game 4, to be precise - go Giants!) and was pleasantly surprised with their speed. They estimated 45 minutes but came within 25.

The food was moderately priced and was pretty average. Fairly generous portions, too. I ordered a bento box with chicken teriyaki, a california roll, and gyoza, and I've got leftovers for when I inevitably get hungry three hours from now.

All in all, not a bad deal when you're feeling lazy! (Minimum delivery $10 before tax - I tried to order something that was $9.95 but had to bump up my order.) Nothing extraordinary, but I'd order again.

On New Years Day I was craving sushi all day. I was driving around finding that all of my favorite sushi places were closed.
Micky and I found this one and decided we should try this new place.
    Good choice!

It was very busy inside, and still we were greeted immediately, while a smile. They cleaned off the two open tables swiftly and my friend and I were seated within minutes.

    Good service, I'd say!
The waitress brought us green tea as soon as we sat down and she was very nice.
After we ordered she told us that with our order we would get either free hot sake or a tuna tekka roll. Sweet deal !
    The sushi was wonderful!
We had salmon sashimi, spicy tuna nigiri, the free roll and then this deliciously fabulous roll called the Pink lady. It had avocado on the inside of the rice, with Maguro and Sake on the top, with a spicy sauce. OOH, so good!

Then at the end of our meal our waitress gave us a complimentary 2007 Japanese scroll calendar.

Good service, good food, good prices, good times.

I revisited here on a Thursday night. No one else was inside. It was freezing outside, and unfortunately inside as well. I think they turned the heat on for us though, it did get warmer.

This time my experience was not as good as the first. The
atmosphere is dull and old-fashioned, and being cold at first was not very comfy. I am taking away 2 stars.

The sushi was still very good.

I've only had delivery from Sake House so...

My first time ordering from Sake House resulted from them leaving a menu at my door and a craving for sushi four months ago. You get a free California Roll or a 2-liter soda for any order over $20, why not? But the food was AWFUL. I had sashimi, a rainbow roll, and chicken teriyaki. The fish wasn't fresh, the roll was average, and the teriyaki was basically just grilled chicken. Teriyaki sauce? What teriyaki sauce?

I told myself I was never going to order from them again.

A month or so later, the craving attacked and I was too lazy to go to an actual restaurant. What to do, what to do... Yelp, of course! All the reviews lead me to call up Sake House, unsure whether they were the crappy place I had before. It was a damn good thing I'd forgotten!! This order was fresh and delicious. Since then, I've had delivery from Sake House three more times and each time the quality was fantastic.

Although I hate ordering over the phone (Asian restaurants usually require me to yell and repeat myself multiple times), for Sake House I do it willingly and happily. Fresh sashimi delivery? F*** YEAH!

Based on one delivery lunch on a weekend.  They took 40 minutes, just to let you know.  It was a rainy day so I'm sure those are their busy delivery days.

The food was three stars, and I'll give an extra half for the careful packaging: cardboard on the bottom of the bag to keep the soup and udon upright, everything was separated properly in their own packaging, and delivery service!

We had the vegie udon and lunch box with salmon teriyaki and California rolls, Sunset Roll which was California roll with salmon on top.

The salmon on the California roll was not great quality.  I did not eat the salmon.  The food was ok.  I can't complain for it being delivered.  I'm sure it would have tasted better at the restaurant.  The udon wasn't flavorful though.  I wouldn't order udon there again.

I'll try this place again, maybe dine in next time.

Sadly for me Sake house is moving to Clement Street. I live 1/2 a block from the old place, so it was a great option if I wanted to quick take out dinner (or didn't want to brave the Richmond fog). But they are more known for delivery, so it shouldn't impact most delivery fans.

I'm not sure what people mean by expensive, this is the cheapest sushi in town. They also have a great Japanese curry that's totally cheap.

Cute, quaint, small restaurant located at a very busy location.  Parking is really hard to find in this area, circling around for 15 minutes!  Ok, I was a little generous in my rating because there were freebies and a cool compartment drawers at each table for storing purses, shoes, or anything of the sort....I haven't seen this in other restaurants.  Also, since we ordered more than $15, we had the choice of free sake or a free tekka fried sushi rolls, it was nice bite portions.  The music played was mainly trance or eclectic house music which made me eat my food in a hurry a little bit but it was still fun to be at!

i don't know what i'd do without sake house delivery. i've been a fan of japanese food, sashimi and sushi for 30+ years, and have eaten at some fantastic japanese restaurants... so this place isn't fantastic, i mean it's not blowfish with towers of rare sashimi, and there's no trendy sushi chef making the next best thing, but i'm sorry, you just cannot beat being able to pick up the phone, order, and have totally decent sushi and dinner delivered to the door in about 30-40 minutes, and it's cheap. once or twice, it took a little longer, but usually it's plenty pronto.

and the price is so right. order the bento box where you get three different things plus rice, salad and soup, more food than you can eat for dinner for something like eleven bucks. i usually add some extra nigiri sushi or a wakame salad, and end up stuffed. and they deliver all day, and have a discounted lunch menu.

tip: they deliver hot sake too! so i make sure to get my sake bottle and cups out while i wait for them to arrive. it's just like  restaurant, only i get the remote control.

This is decent, solid Japanese food.  And they deliver which gets them another star.  They are always friendly over the phone and delivery time is always within their estimate.

First, the California roll is real crab.  I don't know why they invented that fish cake crab substitute, but unless it was some byproduct of a cure for cancer, the inventors should be shot.  But I digress.  The nigiri sushi is also really good and all the pricing for sushi is great.  Again, especially for delivery.

We usually order a meal as well.  The chicken teriyaki and tempura is my favorite.  The chicken teriyaki is what it is.  You really can't screw up chicken teriyaki, but it is never overcooked and the sauce is good, albeit watery.  Teriyaki sauce should be thick.  Not watery.  Either that or the chicken should be so well marinated that teriyaki glaze after the fact should not be needed.  The tempura is awesome.  Two good size prawns and vegetables deep fried in a batter that is not doughy like a lot of places.  Amazingly good considering it is sitting in a delivery car for a while before arriving to my door.  I can't say enough about the tempura.  Order it.  The one complaint I have is they only have vegetarian gyoza.  What the hell???  And there is no gyoza dipping sauce.  Again, what the hell???  Only vegetarian gyoza and no dipping sauce????  Hey, I'm not persnickety, but I'm almost tempted to take one star away for that only because I love gyoza.  Take a damn crowbar to your pockets and buy some pork gyoza.  The teriyaki salmon was OK.  Obviously, it is going to be a little dry by the time it gets here but for some reason, the teriyaki sauce isn't so good on salmon.  Go figure....  The tonkatsu dinner is not that good.  I grew up on great tonkatsu so maybe that is the reason.  Pounded too thin and overcooked.  Not a good combination.  We ordered the tonkatsu curry one time and the curry sauce was much runny.  It should be thick like gravy over the tonkatsu and rice.  Not recommended.

Anyway, the people who take your order are always really nice and the food is good.  The delivery people are really nice too.  I have been ordering from this place for a while and it is always consistent.  Find what you like and you won't have to worry about it being good one day and horrible the next.

I was excited to find a sushi place that had decent reviews and does DELIVERY to the outer Sunset!  But I don't think I'll get food from Sake House again, after last night...

2 stars for my food, which consisted of a Philadelphia Roll and Vegetable Udon.  The sushi rice for my roll was gummy, like the sushi you get from a grocery store. And the avocado was waaay too mushy to belong in my food. Gross.  And my udon broth, although it had a good sized serving of veggies, had hardly any flavor! Very watered down.

4 stars for my husband's food, the Beef Curry. He said it was really good, and I'll have to trust him since I don't like curry.

Why is their non-Japanese food so much better than their Japanese food???

Plus one star for delivering hot sake (!) but then subtract that same star because I'm pretty sure the sake was watered down too!!! Craziness.

So after all that math, the average is 3 stars. But a 3 star place that won't get my business again.

We have enjoyed their delivery dinners for several years now and only once in a great while does the quality ever slip. A pretty good track record over all. The thing to order is the Chef's Dinner Bento. You choose three items from a pretty long list and you get all the other stuff, too. For eleven bucks when you don't want to cook or go out, it's always a nice alternative to a greezy pizza or chinese.

i've never been to the actual restaurant but have ordered delivery from here plenty of times. they hook it up with free calendars. wOOOOOOOOt. but for real, the food is on par price-wise and quality-wise with miyake. i kid not. fuck i miss living in the city. never had to leave my apt for good, cheap food.

This is one of Clement's best restaurant.    After many years of ordering the chef's dinner bento I decided to try the fillet sole cutlet.  The fillets, lightly battered and deep fried  was delicious and plentiful.  It comes with their special house dressing as a dip.  The food in this restaurant is worth every cent.

sake house is a godsend.  i give them one star for being within spitting distance of my front door, yet still delivering to me when i'm feeling lazy and don't want to venture out into the chilly, foggy evening.  the second star is because when i do order delivery and give them my address, they say they will have it to me in 45 minutes, but it ends up being only 20 minutes at the most.  i give them a third star for having a very economical, generous, and tasty bento box option on their menu.  as odd as my friends tell me it is to order, i prefer to get the salmon teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, and the vegi gyoza.  i call it surf-n-turf for non-red meat eaters.  the fourth star is because they offer free calif rolls or a 2 liter soda with an order of $20 or more.  i would have given a 5th star, but there was a deduction for the one time that i ordered takeout and the hostess entered my credit card expiration date incorrectly then called me back to re-confirm the numbers.  i gave them to her again, careful to enunciate each word.  she read it back to me properly and then proceeded to incorrectly enter it twice more before calling and telling me that my card had been declined.  then she asked if i could get cash and come pick it up.  well the reason that i ordered take out with my credit card was because i didn't have enough cash handy.  so i had to run 3.5 blocks to laurel village to go to the atm, and then run the 7.5 blocks from there to the restaurant, only to check the "declined" receipts and see that the hostess had incorrectly entered my credit card information three times before inconveniencing me by having me make an unnecessary journey.
