This library is right on the waterfront, enclosed in a building that serves as a shopping mall and seat of city government.  It was built in 1983, though the library has been established since the late 1800s.  It has a grand entrance on the second floor of the mall, reachable by an escalator.  Outside the entrance, overlooking the harbor is a large, handsome model of the sailing ship Marco Polo.

As is our habit when in a strange place in inclement weather, we take refuge in the library.  We brought our computers.  The library has wifi and the friendly librarian directed us to where it was.  The room I was in was a memorial to someone whose name I've forgotten.  The chairs were lightweight and comfortable, w/ rollers, making them move easily.  The exterior windows by me were beautiful stained glass.  They looked like they had previously been installed in a church.  There were signs reminding patrons not to leave personal items like laptops and purses unattended, reminding me that libraries nowadays are refuges not only for the literate but for the indigent and drug addled as well.
