I come here for the convenience: free parking, renovated a year or so, and love the separate "cafe room" for wifi & sipping on your Starbucks ;)
Can't say i'm too big on the meats here as I usually go to Whole Foods but I do prefer their nuts section. it's a stand-along booth with staff there getting the nuts, pistachios, etc. for you--instead of those other places where you scoop it yourself, and who knows if that scoop's dropped on the ground, etc.!
It's a bit of a 'walk' with the moving escalators but hey, that's how they manage to double their space from the previous location. -

True story:
Man wandering through the produce section, sticking random bananas, oranges, apples, limes (wtf?) and any other piece of fruit he can fit into his jacket. Intrigued, I follow him through the store. Man continues to stuff his jacket with the strangest items: soy sauce, margarine, candy -- what? I usually don't care to get involved with Safeway thievery, but the security guard happened to be in the next isle, so I flagged him down to let him know what was up. (as an aside, I've witnessed this very same guard hiding in the bulk isle stuffing his face with pistachios). So I tell him, thinking I'm doing some kind of civic duty, and he says -- not a word of a lie -- "Oh. Oh, well, uh. Oh, well. I'll just let him do that. Best not to make a scene." Then the man with the stuffed jacket leaves the store.
... what the hell, Safeway.

Best Safeway in Downtown (well, there only are two). Good selection and easy free parking downstairs.

This is one of those new trendy Safeways, located right at Robson and Denman, Nothing I would rave about except FREE parking DOWNTOWN!

4 whole stars? What am I, crazy? For Safeway? I am not a Safeway shopper - I'm barely a Save-On Foods Shopper. I find the mega chains lack personality, but when I needed cracker jacks to take to a ball game, I strolled into the newish Safeway on Denman and Robson for my candy fix.
And what can I say? The nuts sold me!
There is a freaking whole section with nuts called the "Nut Bar." (Do the other Safeway's know that these guys have this many nuts?) All sorts of nuts - cinnamon and vanilla macadamias! Brazil Nuts, Coated pecans...and the piece de resistance?
A peanut butter bar. That's right! Just like for olives, but better. You CRUSH you own nuts! Dry roasted, honey, organic--they're all there - creamy, crunchy...I didn't get a chance to try it out - but mark my words, I'll be back for my nuts!
Unless I want still-in-the-shell peanuts. Strangely, in a world full of nut goodness, the shells were left out!
There's a nice area up the escalators to sit outside on. Grab your deli sandwich and take a load off. No one else was doing it which means lots of solo time to people watch with a birds eye view of Robson!
And i gotta say, since I'm not a huge fan of almost every cashier I've come across at a Safeway, the self-serve check out stand was quite a treat too!Listed in: Favourite Vancouver…, A Guide to Vancouver's Dining…

I still can't get over how much more expensive things are in Canada when it comes to dairy, meats, ice-cream...just to name a few. It also took me awhile to find stores where I'm not breaking the piggy bank just to buy sad looking veggies or discolored meats. After exhausting most outlets, I must say that this Safeway is the best resource. It's a pleasant experience since there is a parking lot underneath the grocery store, the neighborhood isn't sketchyand the interior is clean. Thus far, the workers have been nothing but helpful and pleasant (whenever I ask for more produce on sale to be put out, they immediately come back with a fresh supply for my picking).
The best kept secret of this place is FIRST TUESDAYS of the month. Now with tax increases, I need to save, save, save and every little bit helps. You know how you get a receipt and you see how much you save just by shopping there? Well, it's nice to see how much you shave off on specials, but on every first Tuesday of the month, you get an additional 10% off your bill!!!!!!!
Happy shopping, people. I know you'll love looking at your bill for once, too....even it if it is but once a month. =) -

Well, I'll just let my food geekiness hang all out here and say that I was just bowled over by this Safeway! I am originally from California where this would have been a Pavilions which was a fancy-pants Vons, it's Safeway where I am in Oregon and while we have snazzy Safeways, this one is the prize.
The meat and seafood department was pretty damn pretty, spendy, too. The nut bar, oh yes, we dropped some coin there, the Starbucks, which is the Devil in my book nonetheless had WiFi that worked and was free, so I will sleep with the devil for that benefit as I could not find a signal anywhere that I could use free or not up to that point.
Nice cookware, nice kitchen and dining linens, lovely flowers, hold my head before I explode! Plus I got to do a whole lot of compare and contrast of Canadian products which is so sad that I would do this on my vacation...and announce it publicly...Listed in: Vancouver BC for goobers

Like the fact they finally put a Safeway on that side of the West End. The layout is different from the one on Davie so that at least makes the experience a change. I do like the fact they installed self-checkout tills.
Other than that, it's a Safeway and they are all pretty much the same stock-wise and staff-wise. They do have a nuts/candy bar where you can dispense your own in amounts you want. I also think the layout of the bakery and deli works much better than most Safeways. -

Ok ok, I know I'm only 2 blocks from both the downtown Urban Fare locations but today I didn't feel like spending $5 on a grapefruit and I also wanted a little exersize. Come in Safeway.
I lived near a safeway for almost 10 years so I became accustomed to the store and what to expect but since moving downtown I am bit closer to the above mentioned, pricier chain. Actually too close.
Anyway, the service was good, the store was clean and I found what I needed for a decent-ish price. Plus, I got a little bit of exersize. Not bad at all. -

Maybe it's not fair to judge an entire store on just one cashier, but I have never been so rudely treated in my life in a grocery store. I had just three things to buy and I was in a hurry because my partner was waiting for my outside with my dogs. As the cashier started to scan my items, I swiped my credit card. "Not so fast," he said. "I have to see about your discounts first." I explained that I did not have a Safeway card. "Give me your phone number," he demanded. I said again that I did not have a Safeway account. "Look up at me," he said sarcastically. "You're giving away your country and state. We do things differently here. Now, give me your phone number." I am not sure why I did not just walk away, but I sighed and gave the the phone number - which sure enough did not work. I signed the credit card receipt and as I was leaving I he shot a final, "Well, enjoy your visit."
I hope that this balding little man is not typical of Safeway Canada employees. I just happen to believe that you do not insult your customers and if they do not choose to give you personal information like a phone number, for whatever reason, you respect that. -

It was great to have a convenient supermarket so close to a residential area and close to my hostel. Getting drinks and snacks here was very easy and made my vaca a tiny bit smoother. There is $5 parking in the evening for those who can't find a parking spot.

I would have given it just 1 star based on the competence of the cashiers (2 separate instances) but I decided to give it 1 more star for the location, cleaniness, decor and the service of the floor staff.
1st Instance - A few months ago, my partner and I were paying for a few items including a bottle of POM with a coupon which would render the item free. It literally took the cashier a few minutes to study the coupon and figure out how to enter the code. We gave her that, granted there are so many different coupons out there from all manufacturers. However, after she entered the transactions, placed the bottle in the bag and moved on to the next item. She asked us to take the bottle out so she could examine if the coupon was for the right size. After a few minutes of studying? Asking a customer to take a rung-in item from the bag? After she re-examined the bottle, she didn't even put in back in the bag. Meanwhile, for a previous customer, she halted a long line of customers for 3 minutes because she voluntarily offered to help the customer to find something. The customer did not ask for it.
2nd Instance - Last Saturday, a different cashier. We were paying for our purchase with a credit card. Because my signature on the receipt was not identical with the one on the card, the cashier asked for my ID. How many people sign their signatures the same way every time. However, I thought it was good security measure for customer protection so I was grateful for the request. However, upon returning the ID to me and after I had placed it back in my wallet, he asked me for the ID again because he thought the name on the ID did not match the name on the credit card. Isn't that what he should have checked during the 1st time round? What was he doing when he first had my ID? Just twirling it around?
Everyone knows that Safeway is beat out by Superstore and Safe-On in terms of prices. Urban Fare has better deals when their items go on sale. If I want to buy quality food, I go to Whole Foods or Capers. I really wonder where Safeway comes in. Service? Not based on my experience. -
Review from I have something to say... A.
Nice, new, clean and well organized. Layout is the same as Safeway back in the states. Staff looked rushed and weren't as friendly. However, shelves and displays are beautiful.
