Review from Jill M.
Saege, I'm a fan. I've had various things at Saege - pastas, pizzas, sandwiches, and I've always been impressed with the food and service.
For pizza, I'd definitely recommend the pesto pizza - roasted garlic, caramelized onion, poached pear, walnut oil and Jarlsberg? Count. Me. In. For pasta, I've been delighted in the past by a butternut squash ravioli, and I'm dying to go back to try and entree as some of the menu items look downright mouth-watering.
I recently stopped by during the OpenCity weekend to try a boxed lunch, and it was downright delicious. My veggie croissant sandwich had a thick portobello mushroom, spinach and a delicious roasted red pepper hummus.
A word of warning - Saege does a $10 pizza or pasta deal on Wednesday nights which is great, but don't both doing research first. That menu is always changing, which is great as long as you didn't already have your mind and mouth set on something from the regular menu.Listed in: The way to my heart..., I Heart Carbs, Yelpspiration Reviews

Review from Amy W.
I haven't been to Saege in a couple of years, but visited recently to take in the $10 pizza and pasta special on Wednesday evening. Forget "cellar door" - for me, the two most beautiful words in the English language are "cheap carbs". I had previewed Saege's online menu picand ked out a pasta and a pizza that sounded especially tasty, so I was surprised once we arrived and the pizza/pasta menu was made up of completely different offerings. We learned that the Wednesday special menu changes every week - fair enough. I opted for the roasted vegetable pizza, which was lovely and big enough for leftovers the next day.
We decided to get dessert as well. Saege's dessert menu is really impressive (in fact, it would be a great place to go just for dessert and coffee if that's your thing). I had a scoop of mango sorbet and one of coconut ice cream because I was in a tropical mood. Delicious!!
I remember my first visit to Saege as being kind of 'meh' but after this experience I'll go back again. The menu is reasonably priced, even if you don't happen to go on a Wednesday, and they are very accommodating to vegetarian/vegan diners. The atmosphere is just fancy enough but still comfortable, and it's great for people watching. -
Review from Craig S.
I had lunch here a couple of weeks ago and left underwhelmed. I got the special which was a soup and grilled cheese sandwich. The soup wasn't memorable, as I've forgotten what it was and the grilled cheese, which I was kind of excited about trying was disappointing.
It was grilled cheese - Havarti I believe - with carmelized onions, which is awesome, right? Well no. I found it to be most memorable for being too much bread and not enough cheese nor onions. Maybe a stronger cheese and more onions!
My other half got the ravoli, which was good except for the massive amount of finely diced rawish onions, which were not mentioned in the description so came as a surprise and not the good kind of surprise. I love onions and didn't like them in this dish and she doesn't like onions unless they are pureed, so you can imagine how much she liked them.
The food wasn't bad so I'll stay at 3, but it was awfully close to a 2 mainly because I doubt I'd return. -

Safe to say, we will surely be making a visit again!
It was our first visit to Saege, and what better day to dine than my sisters birthday. We called and made a reservation, being that it was a Friday night.
Our waiter was very pleasant and helpful. We took a while going through the menu as everything sounded so delicious. Finally decided, I had the lobster ravioli which was exactly what the menu described it to be. All the flavours really oozed out of the rich sauce, the white wine, lemon, dill, it was a perfect pairing for the lobster.
My sister had the lamb shank which sat on a bed of white beans. The meat was seasoned well and fell off the bone. The waiter was impressed that she was able to finish all of her food :-)
My mum ordered the curried pork tenderloin. I was expecting a "curry" to go with the jasmine rice, but realized I read the menu incorrectly. It was pork tenderloin coated in a curry paste. My bad :-p
The ambiance was great and we were very pleased by the whole evening. We would have had dessert but we had two birthday cakes sitting at home, so no dessert menu's for us please!
Thank you Saege for a wonderful evening :-) -

A must try at Saege is the Lost Mexican - tequilla, ginger beer and lime make this a very refreshing beverage. Perfect for a summer evening!

Review from Kim H.
I always have a great experience at Saege. I like that it's a little on the "fancy" side, but not so fancy that it's intimidating or prohibitively expensive. The prices are a little bit on the higher side, but not too bad. And you get great quality food for the price, so it's worth it anyway.
I ended up being here just last night for supper - our server was great, really friendly (we ended up getting in a conversation with him about astrology at one point! Yay for random awesomeness!). I had the chef's pizza, which was a yummy mix of smoked salmon, red onion, diced tomato, mozza, and a zesty sauce. I love that their food, at its base, is basic Italian but they add their own little twists to it to elevate the experience. I have NEVER eaten bad food here.
I also had a candy cane white hot chocolate (one of their holiday drink specials) and it was delicious!! Some may find it to be too sweet and creamy, but I LOVE sweet stuff so I downed it quite easily.
I LOVE their atrium seating area right on the sidewalk. It's just really pretty at night with the candles flickering, and you can people-watch, which is always fun on Spring Garden Road. It would be a great room to have a cocktail party or reception or something - very warm. -

Utterly disappointing. The salad vinaigrette was pure acid, topped with grapefruit which added more acid. My mouth was raw half way through. When I mentioned it to the waiter he said he was sorry it was not to my taste.
My partner's lamb was cooked appropriately but without any flavor. My pot pie came with bizarre elements like an almost raw spear of radicchio that was pure bitterness, and a roasted lemon. The lemon sounded like a great addition but was actually just half of a burnt lemon. The pot pie was edible but more like a soup than a pie and definitely not worth $20 for a soggy, improperly cooked meal.
We will never go back, even with another 2 for 1 entree coupon. -

Okay fine. I'm big enough to admit when I was wrong. Or at the very least when I was too cranky to have any business writing reviews in the first place. Yes, the first time I went to Saege that led to my brunch review was less than ideal but my most recent visit definitely gave me enough reason to change my tune.
Sitting in the glass atrium over the lunch hour on a sunny day in the city was a perfect way to get reacquainted with this bistro. This time I wasn't hungover this time, the servers weren't run-off-their-feet busy, making for a much improved experience over my ill-fated brunch.
My foodie friends and I were able to clink our wine glasses together just after noon without judgment (at least from the servers), each dish arrived hot and looking flawless in no time, and the flavours couldn't be beat. The fennel pizza had be leaning closer and closer to one friend, while the seafood special of the day had me convinced maybe I should give eating fish another chance. But most of all, I was ready to add my brown sugar buttered gnocchi to my Fab 5 plan on my phone.
I loves me some potatoes in any form but gnocchi has to be my favourite. Bite-sized carbs slathered in sauces and preferably lousy with blue cheese is my definition of heaven. This dish wasn't quite that but equally pleasant and perhaps better suited for lunch. The flavours were subtle but fresh, and the use of a sweet dressing over heavy creams meant I avoided the post-gnocchi coma where I have to lie on a heated rock for three months before I can get back in the swing of things. The fresh julienned vegetables added nice colour and crunch to the mix while also making me feel a little less like a fatty-face for essentially eating a bowl of potato for lunch.
Okay, Saege. Are you happy now? I admitted I was wrong. But I'm still holding onto the fifth star until I make it in for a proper meal which after this will surely wipe the brunching completely out of my mind.

This restaurant will always have a special place in my heart as it is the place of my first date with my husband and the place where he proposed (after we had already moved to Vancouver). The food is all right. I love the water, which has berries and cucumbers in it for a refreshing taste.
The ambiance and decor are the restaurant's strong point. Love the cozy fireplace and warm surroundings. Fun place to people watch in the solarium. Fresh, contemporary colours and great service! -
Review from Leslie F.
I avoided Saege for a long time on the basis of one particularly horrible experience with their 'Fish Friday' lunch special several years ago. (Note - just because it's the special, doesn't mean it's going to be special.) However, I'm a believer in second chances, so instead of completely writing-off this restaurant, I took it for a spin this weekend and tested out their new Brunch menu.
If you're going by the menu that's on their website, you're in for a treat (or a shock) because they have revamped their Brunch offerings. And in my opinion, the change is good. I had 'Geir's Scramble' which is a mix of eggs, tomatoes, onions, and goat cheese on a grilled baguette, and comes with a side of fruit. It was tasty (anything with goat cheese is usually a safe bet for me) and filling, but I had major food envy of my dining companions who ordered from the Eggs Benny selection. Their meals came with a hearty portion of fried hashbrowny goodness, which I would have preferred over the baguette. Thankfully I was able to steal a few bites from them. Overall, everyone enjoyed their meals, the restaurant wasn't too noisy or busy, the service was fine, and the price was decent.
While I will never fully get over the memory of that unfortunate 'Fish Friday', Saege did a lot to redeem itself with this brunch.Listed in: Along the Garden Route

Pleasant, if somewhat cramped environment, great service from the tall moustached server (I should have gotten the name), dessert divine, but pasta too salty for my tastes.

Review from Sue A.
In what I can only think is an effort to broaden their customer base or generate business on a slow weeknight night, this slightly swanky bistro offers $10 pizza and pasta dishes on Wednesday evenings with the purchase of a beverage. Drawn by the bargain price, my husband and I went by last week to try it out.
When Saege first opened, I would be strolling down Spring Garden Road and look in and see the largest selection of senior citizens in Halifax. Sedate in its decor, a calming green colour palette paired with wood furniture, the restaurant doesn't seem to be a place for anyone under fifty.
What a difference a deal makes. The night we visited there was a collection of university students with their parents, young working people and couples on what looked like date night.
Any beverage whether a Diet coke or a cocktail earns you the $10 deal on pizza and pasta. I had an artichoke pizza with olives and cheese. The crust was a bit soggy but for the price it was fine. My husband had a chicken pasta dish that looked unexciting but was a generous size portion.
Our server was a bit on the surly side, but I can only imagine his dread of Wednesday evenings as the bargain hunters descend on the restaurant. All in all it was a pleasant evening at a pleasant price. -

I was lucky enough to have a very pleasurable double date at Saege. I was a little sceptical at first because it seems like such a fancy, up-scale restaurant, but we went on the right night.
Wednesday's are a special day at Saege because they have a pizza and pasta menu where each dish is only $10. You can't go wrong with a filling, delicious meal for $10. Each week they come up with different pizza and pasta dishes, so you're always sure to find something you want. The other menu prices are a little higher than $10, which is why Wednesday is such a great day.
The atmosphere in Saege was quite nice. They have flowers on every table that is changed on a regular basis. Everything in the main dining area is a nice greenish colour, which is very relaxing and quite nice. They have a private dining area that is decorated with purple instead of green.
I will warn you about the bathrooms. The doors have a man and woman painted on them distinguishing the two. However, the man looks awfully curvy and could actually pass as a woman. I say this because I made the unfortunate mistake of wandering into the men's washroom. I left as soon as I saw the urinals. Ladies, our bathroom is the far one with an even curvier figure. Upon closer examination you'll also notice that one door says 'Adam' and the other says 'Eve.' I just wish it was a little clearer. Oh well, I'll know for next time. -
Review from Adam R.
Everytime I visit friends in Nova Scotia, we make a pilgrimage here, as I think it's one of the best in Halifax, if not the province. Their cedar plank salmon was amazing. As many times as I've been here, I've never had anything that I did not enjoy. Their wine list is nice as well. The service has also always been great. I'm looking forward to more meals at Saege next time I'm in town.

Its recently come to my attention that Saege Bistro has suffered an electrical fire and has closed its doors for the time being. Bollocks! This is such a serene summertime destination, with its easy lightness and integrated flavor. Award winning! Expert cuisine! Whoah-Nelly presentation! This is truly a bummer, as Saege is in its element once summertime hits.
Rumor has it that there will be a "Saving Saege Fundraiser". Not exactly sure what this will entail, and how far fans will go to contribute to a revival. But heres hoping for a coming together and quick recovery for this delicious and elegant Spring Garden locale.Listed in: See Food? Sea Food!
