I had never heard of Ruth's Chris before I moved to Edmonton. I kind of laughed when I heard that they bring in all USDA grade steaks when the restaurant in in Alberta...not using Alberta beef, alright then. Guess we don't adapt to our environment with this chain.

I really wish I could give the restaurant a 3.5 star instead of a 4. The service was really good, the matire d' at the front door was very professional and my steak was perfectly cooked. The filet melted in my mouth, it was delicious. However, like others have mentioned it is quite expensive. You can go a la carte here where you order your side dishes seperately. We ended up having two side dishes, two main dishes, two glasses of wine, one appy and 2 coffee's and the bill came to around $200.

The decor also really needs to go in my opinion. However that is because I do prefer either trendy or dark romantic type decor. Ruth's Chris reminds me of somewhere you would mainly see old yuppies go with a art deco feel to it. Not really my personal cup of tea. When I was there it was a Sunday and we ended up staying for awhile so I think it was near closing time when we left (around 10pm). We were the last ones in the restaurant and we were certainly made to feel like it. Which I can appreciate them wanting to go home, however we just paid $200 to be there, calm down.

Went there a few years ago on the first weekend after moving to Edmonton. Wanted to celebrate the move by treating ourselves to a very nice dining experience. Well, that's what we were hoping for but we were really disappointed (have never been back since then).

Not surprisingly, we ordered steaks. We asked for one medium rare and one medium to well done. The medium rare came out just fine, but the other one was definitely undercooked. When our waitress came by to check how we liked our food, we mentioned that one steak was undercooked. The rude waitress, who should have been old and experienced enough to know better by the looks of things, refused to believe that the steak was undercooked relative to the order. We literally had to argue with her! Before she took the steak back, she insisted on checking the meat herself and also double-check the order. She was rude the whole time and seemed to think we had no clue about food or anything else. A complete lack of respect from beginning to end. Maybe we looked to young to know what we were doing at such "exclusive" and "luxurious" place? (I bet we would have been treated better by the rude, old lady if we had showed up in suits, but that is a different story.) When we finally got the properly cooked steak, it was the same steak that we had sent out. No big deal maybe, but we REALLY didn't feel like valued customers here. They did everything wrong.

Even if the steaks had been excellent and the service a bit better, I don't think what they offer is much better than what you'll get at other steak places in town, and at much lower prices. Ok, after all the negative stuff, maybe I should give the place a plus because of the building (loved it).

    Holy dinner batman!

Kendra and I went to Ruth Chris, since it was right next door to our hotel.  I have been to the one in Calgary, so I already knew it was awesome.  But wow.... I forgot how awesome it was!

I was checking out teh other reviews, and honestly, I was totally surprised by the 1 - 3 star reviews.  I couldn't even give this place a 4 star, because it was a first-class experience.

I had the beef tenderloin and stuffed chicken combo, and the chicken practically melted in my mouth, it was so tender.  The beef followed suit.  It was so tender, I barely had to chew it.  The garlic mashed potatoes were to die for!

Looks like they had a bad run in October, 2011 with some reviewers, but be rest assured, in November they made a comeback!

They were definately pricey though!  For two women to have a meal, the tab came to $167.  Plus tip on top of that.  So, it was a $200 night.

This is a nice place and has great food, although I'm not sure why they still use US steak. Yes, I know its a US based restaurant, but come on....  Anyways, this place is mostly for the rich and/or older crowd. If your under 30, you might not see anyone your age here and their decor and prices are for the older and well off crowd so did I feel comfortable being a 25 year old middle class kind of guy, no. That being said, this place has a really cool building, with a bunch of private areas downstairs, with one room that has a huge bank vault door (I assume the building use to be a bank). I would go back to this place but its a bit pricey when you could go to the keg and get comparable quality food for a more reasonable price.

Consistency? Not at this "franchise" Ruth Chris.  Started out with the seared Ahi as an appetizer and they COOKED it - it was medium, horrible! Sent it back and they returned about 7 minutes later with a properly seared Ahi plate - much better - but not great - especially for $19.
Dinner was worse and incredibly dissappointing. Ordered the Pettite Filet with the Jumbo Shrimp @ $52.  The shrimp were tough, over cooked and did not taste fresh. The "medallions" were past medium (I asked for medium rare) and the steak was just not very good at all - I took three bites and that was enough. Finally the cream spinach which is suppose to be one of their specialties - not at this location. Bland, watered down just not very good.

Easily my worst experience ever at a Ruth's Chris - I may not go back to them again.

This place does not live up to its hype. Unheard of, red ox, jacks grill or even the keg is better than here. It's not even plated nicely. The ambience is cool though, but not reason enough to go here. The food isn't terrible but its not worth the money.

Good food?  Yes.  Fantastic food?  Not really.

The service and ambiance was good, I have to admit.  And we did feel special.

We spent  over $80 per person excluding drinks, I felt that we could have had a better fine dining experience at an independant steakhouse.

Certainly not a bad restaurant, but not worthy of its legendary reputation.

Ruth's Chris has an interesting history. Taking the time to read about it on their website, I began to understand that it wasn't just a steakhouse and that this was someone's dream.... Up until the big corporations took it over and turned it into a chain that no longer had a recognizable face.

Okay, so it's not THAT bad, but you get my point.

We visited this Ruth's Chris as one of our final meals on a long work trip and wanted to enjoy a nice meal. It turned out to be very enjoyable.

The ambience is nice and the decor makes sense, unlike another place I went to on this trip.

The drinks were definitely pricey, but were expected considering all things. I had a caesar that tipped the scale at over $10 and it didn't taste 1.5x better than other places.

The meal itself was very delicious. Many locals complain that Ruth's Chris uses USDA beef, when we have tons of certified AAA Canadian cow waiting in the meadows to be eaten. I didn't help the cause by ordering the ribeye.

The steak itself was tender and cooked to perfection, but I was warned about the over-abundance of butter that would be covering my steak by a few people prior to my visit. They were right. Very right. I actually like butter and I felt it was in excess. I then saw another table ask for additional butter.. WHAT?!

For sides we had the mushrooms and the sweet potatoes w/ pecan crust. Wow. I mean, WOW! They were both enormous portions for sharing and amazingly tasty.  I wasn't able to finish my ribeye as I had invested my tummy-space on these side dishes.

That last line was actually a lie... I did leave just enough room for one more thing. The creme brulee.

I am a huge fan of a creme brulee and Ruth's Chris nailed it. perfect amount of sweetness and torched to make a not-too-thick, not-too-thin crust. Topped with a few berries, I made quick work of this dessert.

The fact that there is no Ruth's Chris in Vancouver, does make eating here a little more special and memorable. So take all that I've written with a grain of salt. I'm a fan, but I can spend less and enjoy more elsewhere.

Great for entertaining guests or dates and anniversaries, but I wouldn't be coming here regularly.

For a special treat, my work took a few of us out to Ruth's Chris for dinner. For many of my colleagues, it was their first time at the establishment. I had been once previously, shortly after it first opened. My memory didn't fail me, we were in for a feast!

We were greeted by the owner, who gave us a brief tour of the basement and the vaults. There are two vault rooms, one of which the owners themselves had to jack hammer the ceiling of in order to heighten the roof and put in a lighting fixture. Both vaults still have their original doors, but the doors have been propped open - so no fear about getting locked in!

We sat in the first vault room, which fit the 10 of us with ease. The servers were friendly, fun, and eager to explain the menu and make suggestions. My friend and I started with a pair of blue crab cakes, which were moist and flavourful.

I got the tenderloin, which is American beef. When Ruth's Chris first opened, many people were upset a restaurant would have the gall to serve American beef when our Alberta beef is so well-known and delicious. They do have two Alberta beef options, but the options are over-shadowed by the USDA options. The corn-fed American tenderloin was delicious and a bit sweeter, but the cooking in butter is a little bit much. It does make a great treat, but I'll stick to Alberta beef.

The sides are ordered extra, and come in a large family size order intended for 3-4 people. I tried the mushrooms, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, broiled tomato, and broccoli gratin. The broccoli and asparagus dishes were very tasty, with the asparagus definitely being a must-order for me. The broiled tomato is sweet, and more sugary than I remembers. The mushrooms were not for me.

For dessert, creme brulee! Exactly how creme brulee should be.

Ruth's Chris is a fantastic date and dinner location in our city. Definitely higher scale, so expect to spend minimum $100 per person. The food is scrumptious, the atmosphere is great, and the staff are amazing. Very out of my price range, but also a place I'd love to return to!

Over priced. One can find steak just as good or better at a dozen other restaurants in town that are a) locally owned b) less pretentious c) don't have a stupid name.

I do not understand why people go nuts over this restaurant.  It is a pseudo-high-end US chain that depends on people that are oblivious to the restaurant scene in the city to fill the tables.

My parents booked a reservation here after my university convocation after they had enjoyed other Ruth's Chris locations immensely. There is no denying that the steaks were great - though I was glad to have caught the bit in the menu about asking for your steak not to be dripping in butter if that isn't how you or your arteries like to roll...

The five of us shared two shrimp appetizers and a few caesar salads, the shrimp were great, but the caesar was definitely nothing special at all - in fact it was quite bland!

We ordered sides of broccoli, asparagus, and mashed sweet potatoes. Both the broccoli and asparagus were ridiculously over-cooked. Like over-cooked in the way that my great-grandmother used to over-cook everything. So gross! The sweet potato mess was delicious, but not with dinner. It would have been waaay better served with ice cream as a dessert.

The service was total junk as well. The guy was nice enough, but he had about as much sense as one of the over cooked asparagus spears. Also, I know at a place like this servers are taught to be be diligent in their service and check back all the time, but the good ones do this without making it seem like they are doing it... with this guy it was like he thought we were their to celebrate his birthday every time he visited the table. Pretty hard to have a good time and enjoy the conversation when some tool is telling you stories about table cloths and the the weather every three minutes.

Based on my parents reviews I had high hopes and was totally let down. Hope future Ruth's Chris customers have better luck!

Steak is a great meal.  USDA Prime is a no brainer.

So, when I was in Edmonton for the Grey Cup - of course I am going to go to Ruth's Chris for dinner.

Ruth's Chris' menu is standardized throughout most of their restaurants - what you get in Toronto, you get in Calgary, you get in Edmonton, etc., etc..  So commenting on the food is pretty easy:  We had steak, yes it was good, yes it was tasty.

The Edmonton Ruth's Chris however was plagued by spotty service and a kitchen that seemd to be ill-prepared for the increase in business as a result of the Grey Cup visitors.

The restaurant was out of 5 items on the menu (french fries, stuffed mushrooms, onion soup, potato bacon soup, prime rib).  The front desk gave our reservation to another group causing us to wait extra long for a seat.  The servers seemed aloof and generally disinterested.

If the Toronto location had service like this they wouldn't last a month - I guess Edmonton has lower standars of service.

Would I go back?  Probably - as I said, the food is consistant from location to location - but this location could use a crash-course on preparation and customer experience.

It's been a while since I have posted, so get ready, there are a few to come :-]
Went to CRS on March 18, 2011.
We got in and were led to our table; they have an upstairs area and a downstairs area as well.  The room we were lead to is a nice, well lit spot.  Our service was quite good and were well attended to during the evening.  I had the lobster bisque to start which was quite good; had small chunks of lobster (a surprise, since I am used to it not having them) and a delicate hint of sherry. For the sides, as you all know, they come "family style" so my asparagus was enough for two which I did share with my companion. The hollandaise was light and not too buttery.  Now, for the big BIG steak...being from Alberta, I did order the Alberta cut :-] It was quite good and grilled to order.  However, it was a BIG cut of steak, more than I am used to eating...but managed quite nicely.  So, just for FYI....the cut was bigger than my fist, so if you want a smaller cut, ASK for it.  The other side of the shoestring potatoes were good, but the too many even for two of us once you get into eating your main.  The Ahi Tuna Stack was enjoyed by my companion and yes, like the steak, is a generous portion.
For dessert, we split a bread pudding.  It was nice and not drowning in the brandy sauce...a welcome change from others I have had.
On this night, we found ourselves in the company of some of the players from the Colorado Avalanche (they were having dinner in the back corner of the room).  So, for those of you that like to "sportspeople watch", we found out that this is a favourite spot for dinner for visiting teams....
The overall ambiance is quite nice.  Not too loud, and well lit so you can see your food ;-] and the service was quite good.
Would I go again....yes...  Would I order the steak....ONLY if i can order a smaller cut....can't deal with the amount in one sitting.  So, next time I go, I will be asking if they can make me a smaller cut of what I select.

My date received 250$ in gift certificates to Ruths Chris from a contest at work, so we decided we would check it out.  We had never been before as we had heard it was "really expensive".  We got all dressed up and made our way to the old World Trade Centre building where the restaurant is now the tenant.  The restaurant itself is quite beautiful and very large.  We were seated downstairs in a surprisingly empty dining room for 7:00pm on a Friday night.  I guess a lot of other people heard it was "really expensive" too.

We started with a couple drinks.  I had a martini and Heath had a rum and coke.  We decided on a calamari appetizer (the waitress told us it was their specialty) along with Tenderloin for my husband, and Petit Medallions with cajun shrimp for me, as well as asparagus with hollandaise and onion rings for sides.

The calamari came pretty quickly and it was like crack, we couldn't stop once we had started.  That being said, there wasn't really anything that special about it.  It was fried and tossed in a sweet chili sauce and reminded us of Chinese food.  We finished it up and ordered a bottle of wine with dinner (the one Chenin blanc they had) and waited for our hopefully delicious steaks.

Our steaks arrived moments later still sizzling (they broil them ON the plate they are served on so its all VERY hot when it arrives) along with a small side plate of asparagus and 6 stacked onion rings.  This place gets NO stars for plating as it was literally just a hunk of meat on a plate.  We were expecting a little more finesse for 50$/steak!  However, the steak itself was really delicious and we hardly had room for the sides, and I was only able to eat one of my two pieces of meat.

We packaged the rest up and ordered a couple dessert coffees (thank goodness we took a cab) before heading out across the street to 100 for another drink (we're total lushes).  On our way across the street I saw a homeless man begging and feeling quite guilty about the dinner we just had and thinking about what 250$ could have done (even if it was gift certificates....it still felt too decadent), we gave him our left overs (a full steak, asparagus and 5 onion rings!), and drank the rest of our guilt away.

Overall the place was nice, but really just not our style.  Its an easy (and rather uncreative) pick for a date when you are trying to impress someone with your cash (if thats your style) as all it really was was pricey.  I think I am joining the chorus of "really expensive" when asked about this place, cause really....thats all that stood out.

The steak can't be beat (it really can't, sorry but no-where else in Edmonton comes close to comparing to this) but the prices are very high. My favourite dish is the barbecue shrimp, which is served in a creamy cajun sauce.

This restaurant is built over an old city bank, yet retains many of its original foundations. Once you get past the classy layout though, there's nothing else to talk about. Every-time I walk in, I feel an overwhelming sensation of pretentiousness being brought down on me.

Their food is extremely over priced and you are definitely not getting what you paid you. I asked for medium rare, and got well done. When I explained this to the waiter, he claimed that it was cooked to their specifications. Another thing that irritates me is that the steaks are cooked and served in a pool of butter. Not only is it incredibly unhealthy, but I find it ruins the taste of the meat. I could only taste butter as I was eating my steak. I also find their Rack of Lamb to be too well cooked and very dry.

I also dislike how you have to order your sides separately with the meal. As you have probably read, the sides here are huge. Although it can be a good thing if you are hungry, I find it becomes difficult to have some variety if just one side is enough to share with someone else.

My main disappointment with this restaurant though, was the waiter's attitude when he dropped a steak knife on my father's tie. Remember when I said they serve butter with their steaks? Well that butter gets on your knife, and it is very hard to clean a tie. We were very upset with the waiter, but he refused to acknowledge this incident ever happened. It was not until we brought the manager in that the server apologized, but even then he wasn't looking at us directly and did not feel sincere. We ended up giving them the dry cleaning bill.

You can find other steak houses in town that are locally owned, have better service, and have a much more reasonable priced menu.

I went to Ruths Chris in Edmonton for my birthday with my mother.  Yes, I know it's a chain but I had never been to one before so I have always wanted to try it.

I was moderately impressed with everything, actually.  The food was great, the service was fantastic and the wine was tolerable.

My mom was in town for my birthday, and because I just moved to Edmonton for a new job so we decided to to go Ruths Chris.  We were promptly seated and given adequate time to give our drink orders.  I had a steak (of course) and my mother being the health food nut she is, orders a salad...who does that at a steakhouse, seriously?  The thing with Alberta is that they are very proud of their beef.  So, I decided to give it a shot.  I was very impressed with the taste of my steak.  Yes, I know that Ruths Chris soaks their beef in butter and crazy stuff like that but it still tasted great!  We finished with a desert (I forgot what it was).

All in all, I would definitely return....as long as I could afford it.

Ruth's Chris Steak House is a classy place but way over priced.

The service is good and the atmosphere is great but for what you pay you aren't getting anything special. The steaks here you can find elsewhere, personally I think the Keg is much better for less.

I would suggest Ruth's Chris Steak house for people that want to impress someone. That's kind of what this place is. It is really nice and very expensive and I'm sure if you are working a business deal or need to take a client out somewhere this place would do the trick.

Went here with my wife last evening to celebrate a special occasion. My halibut was spectacular, along with the salad and green beans almondine. My wife ordered a filet mignon medium well. The first one came out very well done, after that went back the second one came out rare. C'mon guys for the prices you charge you should be able to cook a steak. Very frustrating....ruined the experience. Will definitely pick a different restaurant for our next night out.

I was super excited when I was invited by a friend to eat at Ruth Chris.
It gives you an excuse to dress up and look extra pretty.
We were put in one of the vaults, which is considered a "private room"
I found it fascinating how this building use to be a bank where lots of money filled these vaults and now it's a fancy restaurant; representing a different kind of wealth. The interior design in this restaurant was exquisite. We all ordered steak and shared the different sides that they had and it all tasted really delicious.
Though I'm not a wine drinker, they had a wide variety of good wines to choose from.
I love the presentation of the dessert. It didn't just look good, but it tasted rich and lived up to their names.  Since this is a fancy restaurant, the waiter was knowledgeable and he made sure we were all being well taken care of.  He served us well.
When you eat here, you feel like you are part of an elite club and the atmosphere here confirms it. There's like this invisible line that divides you from the outside reality of downtown Edmonton once you step through these doors.

Ruths Chris is one of the better Steak Houses, if not the best in Edmonton. The food is pricey but delicious. They do not serve set out entrees. Instead you choose your steak of choice and choose one side to go with it, such as grilled mushrooms. The sides are HUGE and are perfect for sharing with another person. The only thing that made my experience at Ruth's Christ not "perfect", was the fact that somebody comes to fill up your water, literally, every 2 minutes and it does get annoying.
