Rutherford is not a convenient location for me to go to often, but I will absolutely be back! And soon!
Yesterday a few friends and I had decided to check this place out for some vegan delicacies after my boyfriend had heard great reviews.
I am actually not a vegan, I am not even a vegetarian but I try to eat dairy substitues when I can to cut down on cholesterol. I had tried their vegan pancakes and added toasted coconut (which they baked into it) and fresh strawberries to them. OH MY they were so delicious. I actually could not stop talking about how delicious they were as I was eating them. I've tried vegan pancakes at other restaurants and they have had little to no flavor but these were incredible.
And for people who do not eat dairy, the best thing about this place is that the majority of the items on the menu can pretty much be ordered vegan. From their breakfast (my friend had a tofu scrambled combo that he said was awesome) to their burgers.
Plus our waitress was a little sassy, and I appreciated that. -

New York, NY
I stumbled into Rutherford because they had the nearest Dunkin Donuts from where I was driving from and then decided to go for a nice little walk. Not more than 10 feet later, I am captivated by Rutherford Pancake House's packed space and my tummy says "I like pancakes - let's go!"
5 minutes later, I am sitting in a booth and thumbing through previous Yelp reviews. "Vegan pancake" seemed to be a talked-about trend so I ordered myself their blueberry vegan pancakes and my sister ordered their "Dubliner" omelette (with Swiss cheese and corned beef hash). Food arrived about 20 minutes after we ordered (not too bad considering they had a full house), but my pancakes arrived semi-warm only and not pipin' hot. They are pretty good, but not as fluffy as buttermilk pancakes. You can definitely taste that there is something "different" about vegan pancakes but I Have to say they were pretty well made and they tasted a good-different, not bad-different. I fell in love with the Dubliner omelette. That was just intensely well-made. The meat fell apart the moment my fork sunk into the omelette and the flavors just worked together.
Friendly and prompt service - definitely not a quiet place by any means. I'd highly recommend for brunches and anytime you want some livelihood. Prices are a little higher than IHOP's, but the quality is MUCH higher so it is worth it in my eyes. -

Fort Lee, NJ
Having lived in bergen county for a few years now I was surprised that I never visited this place.
I went for Sunday Brunch Easter morning and the place was really cute - country home type style but not to themey.
Okay back to the food:
Menu is full of variety: french toast (challah), pancakes, vegan pancakes, eggs, belgian waffles, etc plenty to choose from. Prices are alright - more expensive than a diner for sure.
I came to the pancake house and so I was determined to try their pancakes.
I ordered pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream with scrambled eggs; my husband got the Viva La Revolucion (french toast with Fresh Strawberries, Bananas, Pecans& Crème Fraiche).
Pancakes I would give an 8.5 not the most amazing pancakes but definitely fresh and good consistency. They were thin but still maintained a good fluffy texture - this is dangerous as you will end up eating more...haha. Whipped cream and strawberries were fresh and delish as well. Side of eggs was satisfactory nothing special. The plus side is it didn't hit your stomach like a ton of bricks afterwards. (no i did not finish the dish)
Viva La Revolucion was chock full of toppics and a ridiculous portion of bread but it was good. I'd give it a 7; compared to the pancakes the consistency was just okay I would definitely recommend ordering pancakes at this place.
I heard the eggs benedict was good I shall try that next time. If you're in the area and are craving pancakes I'd definitely give it a try.
Pros: cute atmosphere, friendly staff, great variety
Cons: street parking, pricier than a diner but not exceptionally any better than a diner. -

I love this place. I have been here many times and like to bring new people here for lunch. The menu is varied and new items appear often. What sets this breakfast and lunch place apart from others is the attention to detail. Dishes arrive exactly as promised. In my opinion the food is quite better than traditional diner food. Some reviewers have commented that the parking is all on the street, but there is actually a municipal parking deck behind the building (enter around the corner) and a walkway directly out to Park Ave. Almost forgot to say: ATTN: Vegans....You will be very happy!

Rockland County, NY
By far the best "breakfast" type place. Wether you are going for Pancakes, Eggs, Omelets, Waffles, French Toast, etc., this IS the place. Everything is very fresh, homemade, and delicious.
For example the coffee is very high quality. Rich and smooth. Not weak and boring like a diner. The orange juice....they have fresh squeezed available....and that is beyond awesome.
Pancakes are light and fluffy, with a nice buttermilk flavor. Real maple syrup is also available for an additional fee.
The eggs are always cooked perfectly as ordered.
They have a huge selection. They also have a large vegetarian menu. They also serve turkey sausage.
Check out their specials on the dry erase board as you walk in. Sometimes they have something new and unique! -

A cute little place with great hosts.
Went today around 3 for a late lunch. Seated right away by the friendly host, and ordered quickly, though they do have a rather large menu with lots of daily specials. My got the daddy O's combo A ( pancakes, eggs, home fries, bacon, sausage) and she got a turkey club. Food came out fast, and it was VERY large. 4 pancakes, 4 pieces of bacon, and 2 sausages! With the home fries- we got the club to go! Sausage and French fries were amazing. Pancakes and bacon and club were good, but not mind blowing. Home fries are good if you're into rosemary- there is a lot of it. Waitress was nice, host were awesome. They even gave us free green scones for St. Patty's day! -

Oh, Hello There. Vegan french toast you say? O waffles too???
I ended up with a huge bbq seitan sandwich with sweet potato fries. It was really good. The sauce wasnt too sweet or spicy. The husband got tofu scramble and said it needed some sort of spices but he added some hot sauce and it was just fine.
The service is a tad slow. Especially if you're in the very front of the restaurant. The servers all seem to hang out towards the back talking all day.
The atmosphere is nice....very....americana. I loved the color of the walls. I'd actually like to know what color it is.
This is a really great place in a very good location. I'll certainly be back if i'm around Rutherford. -

I'm usually never up for breakfast but i had been craving pancakes for about a month so i decided to check out this place one Saturday morning. When you walk you feel all warm and homey the way a breakfast joint should feel.
my gf and i both ordered omellettes bc we were starving and we got a stack of chocolate chip and banana pancakes to share. The only reason why i didn't give this place 5 stars was because the omelletes were ok. Nothing really special about them.
The best part about bfast was the pancakes!! wow so delicious... and the chocolate was melting OMG my mouth is watering thinking about them... They are on the thinner side as some places make thicker pancakes but this place is definitely worth checking out! -
Review from Maly A.
Had brunch here today (AND brought back leftovers!) Good brunch spot when you want something more than just an IHOP, fairly extensive menu with several vegan and Gluten free choices. Helpings are VERY generous.
I ordered the Daddy-O combo 'A'......2 eggs, sausage, pancakes & home fries. I forgot to ask HOW MANY sausages & pancakes!!!! it came with SIX sausages and FOUR pancakes! whoa! (therefore.....leftovers). The home fries were really good, well seasoned. I got the buttermilk pancakes....nice & fluffy.
Staff is friendly and polite, good casual spot. They do have a dinner menu as well. -

20 min wait for two on a Sunday brunch...not bad at all. The place is pretty small on what it appears as a main st in the town. The waiting area gets cramped pretty fast so be prepared to just wait outside.
Ordering is quick but food takes a while to come out. I mean, it took about 35minutes for an omlette and pancakes. But the food is good I have to say. -

I decided to try out someplace new for my Sunday breakfast. I had high hopes after reading the Yelp reviews.
Decor: I'd give 5 stars. The place is nice and homey and since I am a postcard collector, I loved the Rutherford postcard pictures on the walls.
Service: maybe 2 stars..... The waitress was friendly, but I hate when they never come back to check up on the table after the food comes. Towards the end she did come around for coffee refills but by that time I was finished with my food. Then it took her a while to come back with the check.
Food: 2- 2.5 stars. I usually order omellettes for breakfast. I had the Mediterranean omellette which had spinach, tomato and feta. I thought the omelette was small. It didn't taste bad.....it was just small. I order spinach and feta omellettes at many diners and this one was the smallest I have ever had. The potatoes were ok and the wheat toast was the usual. The blueberry pancakes looked good, I noticed they had a good amount of blueberries in them.
The place was just ok for me. Nothing really blew me away or stood out......except the non existent service. -

Bergen County, NJ
Truly great brunch place. I see why it's so popular.
We didn't find the food to be all that exceptional as the french toast was a bit dry (but flavorful), the belgian waffle was crispy (but again, flavorful) and the bacon was not great. However, everything was properly prepared and the menu was exactly what we were looking for for the casual brunch. The homefries were not actually "homefries" that you'd expect, but were delicious roasted potatoes. When I asked that they be cooked well done, that's exactly how they arrived. Decent coffee.
Service was really good even though we were there on a busy Sunday morning. Our coffee was replenished regularly, the dishes arrived promptly, and we were not rushed in any way. Casual, classy environment where anyone would feel comfortable. -

Our band were in NJ on tour and we actually found this place by searching Yelp for great breakfast. We were not disappointed.
We thought the prices were a bit high, until we saw the quality and amount of food we were getting. The sausage and stuffed french toast were just amazing. Everything we got was absolutely delicious, and the waitstaff was very nice.
Thanks Rutherford Pancake House... and thanks Yelp for pointing us to them! -

Bayonne, NJ
My fiance and I were in the area and we were looking for a place to eat, we came across this place via yelp.
Nice decor on the inside, friendly staff - especially at the cashier.
Food was good, I ordered the french toast with strawberries, bananas and pecans and my fiance ordered pancakes with eggs, hashbrown's and sausage. The hasbrowns were really delicious and everything else was yummy. My french toast was definitely a big portion.
I also had the orange juice which was freshly squeezed and the coffee was decent.
Would probably come back if in the area again. -

Rutherford, NJ
We come here often on Saturday mornings. It has far more charm than any local diner or chain pancake house. The staff is very friendly and we've enjoyed all our breakfasts. Pancakes, eggs, home fries, fresh squeezed OJ are all terrific. My only complaint is that you can't order a single or side serving of pancakes even if you order another breakfast entree. It has a nice local feel to it and we will surely keep coming back!

Hasbrouck Heights, NJ
This is our favorite Sunday breakfast joint. The corned beef hash is *FRESH* and dee-licious. Chunks of corned beef and perfectly-made potatoes. The regular home fries are also tasty; they are well-seasoned potato-wedge style home fries.
While my kids gobble up the silver dollar pancakes, I always enjoy trying their specialty pancakes, which are always very good - corn cakes were fluffy and flavorful and while the Red Velvet pancakes sounded like a good idea when I ordered them...it was slightly more gluttonous than breakfast should be, even for a glutton like myself! It was good going down (chocolately, with something that tasted like vanilla frosting on top), but I felt gross afterward! The pumpkin pancakes were pretty decent too - even better if you order a side of pecans to accompany them.
The Rutherford Pancake House has a family-owned feel to it. The wait staff is usually very friendly and the service is reasonable considering how busy they can get. On Sundays, try to arrive before 10 to beat the after-church crowd. -

Wood-Ridge, NJ
Went here this morning and it was a good time! It was packed, but the wait wasn't too bad. I got the sweet potato pancakes which were great. As long as you are okay with a denser pancake, not the usual fluffy kind. They were very thick and filling. The menu really had a wide range of options from vegan to gluten free dishes and everything in between. Service was nice and accommodating as well. I recommend going here!

Bloomfield, NJ
My FAVORITE spot for a Yumm-o vegan friendly breakfast.
They have a truly extensive menu that includes plenty of options for the vegan and non-vegans. My husband loves the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. I have found EVERY vegan breakfast item that I have tried delicious.
On Sunday's they have a vegan special usually a special pancake or French toast. My favorites so far have been the Vegan Lemon Chiffon pancakes and the vegan stuffed French toast. I hope they bring them both back soon! I have also had the red velvet vegan pancakes (delicious but not as good as the lemon) and the pumpkin pancakes (a little disappointing given my love for pumpkin). The vegan blueberry pancakes which are always on the menu are real good too. The home fries were just OK. I was hoping for more but maybe it was just a bad batch the time I had them.
Now, they also serve dinner. They have a pretty decent dinner menu but we actually ordered from the regular lunch menu the time we went. I got the quesadillas with the vegan sour cream...SO GOOD! The vegan cheese cake was also very delicious.
They are a little more expensive than a regular diner but nothing outrageous. The service is generally really good. We have had this one waitress who is a little flighty but overall service is just fine. On Sunday's you might wait but it is worth it! This is a great place to go for a group who might have some vegetarian/vegans and meat eaters. They have a great mix of everything. -

Nothing worse than a soggy waffle.
I've tried a few things on their menu, and have decided it's safest to stick with the french toast or an omelette. The pancakes were soggy and not fluffy as well, and their homefries aren't very good.
Sorry Rutherford Pancake House. I wanted to like you! -

I have found a new favorite breakfast/brunch place! It's so nice to find a restaurant that's so welcoming of patrons with all kinds of dietary preferences. RPH has vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options that are just as delicious and varied as everything else on the menu!
Small touches like available soy milk for coffee and butter substitute made me feel like the restaurant owners really wants to make everyone happy. The service was friendly too!
I ordered the popeye tofu scramble (tofu, spinach, mushrooms, avocado), which comes with a substantial amount of home fries and toast. I also split an order of the vegan pancakes because I really wanted to try them.
I loved the scramble, but the vegan pancakes FLOORED me. They were light and tasty! I was excited to find out that RPH frequently make special vegan pancakes like tiramisu flavor.
The wait (about 30 minutes) was annoying, but the food was definitely worth the trip. I will definitely be coming back here and recommending it to friends and family! -

Great service, great menu, reasonable prices.
There are all sorts of things on the menu, healthy, unhealthy, began and everything in between. The coffee is even good too. I ordered the Viva La Revolucion, thick French toast lightly sweet and cinnamoney with fresh strawberries, bananas and creme fraiche; my fiancee ordered the blueberry pancakes. We split the corn beef hash, SOOOOOO delicious, chunks of corn beef not just a pile of mush.
Overall great experience, the service is friendly and the food is delicious and creative in some aspects. They also have a full line of Vegan items including pancakes and french toast. Kicks the hell out of Ihop -

Funny how Yelp reviews come about!
Last week I had found out through my fellow yelpers (LOL love that term) about this place and saw pretty high marks for it. I decided that I would take my Dad and Mom( they are like Siamese twins lol) here for Father's Day since he had once told me about how much he despised the Ridgewood Pancake House and maybe this would cheer him up.
I called to make a reservation on the premise that it would be packed since my dad like myself, does not like to wait and we would want an immediate table.
I spoke with the owner named Rick who politely informed they don't take reservations because they tried that system once and it ended in disaster. I laughed and he said the best time to come was before 10:30 when the church crowd comes by and it gets packed. I said I appreciated the tip and said I would see him next week. Then out of the blue, he said the special next week would be red velvet pancakes.
I thought that was very thoughtful and courteous and yet at the same time he sounded very routine and blasé about it
This incidentally is a good way to describe the Rutherford Pancake House.
Food: 3 stars: My Mom and Dad ordered a combo breakfast which came with pancakes, Eggs, Bacon, Sausage and Home fries ($10.95) that they were happy with although the pancakes were a little too cold. The Eggs, bacon Sausage and Home Fries were all cooked perfectly even though they were a little bland for my taste and could have used a bit more seasoning.
As far as their namesake pancakes go, I ordered Blueberry Pancakes which came in a stack of 4 that the waitress said were huge along with 2 eggs. I was looking forward to hubcap sized pancakes. Instead I got pancakes slightly bigger than a compact disc. The blueberries were mixed in with the batter as opposed to just thrown on top. The Pancakes themselves were good and had a unique flavor which I think comes from some type of corn flour. They were good solid pancakes but not over the top good (I feel some blueberries or compote added on top would have helped). The Eggs were ok. Cooked right but bland
A nice plus was they offered real 100% maple syrup with your pancakes as opposed to simply offering Aunt Jemima.( I'm serious the house syrup is Aunt Jemima LOL) While it cost $1.99 extra, it was a definite bonus.
Service: 5 Stars: Service was outstanding and professional. You can tell that this is a place that is used to being busy all the time and the staff is well-equipped to deal with the oncoming traffic. The waitress was friendly and efficient, taking our order in a timely manner. The entire wait staff runs like a Swiss watch. Coffee is constantly being refilled and everybody seems to function as if they are a well-oiled machine. Nobody is out of place or looking rushed or exacerbated even though they are busy and always in motion. Our waitress checked back to make sure we liked everything.
Atmosphere: 4 stars: This place is a cross between an old-fashioned coffee shop and a diner. The place is very no-frills as far as décor goes. The noise level is reasonable even though it is packed. Tables and booths were standard. There were a lot of families here as well as slightly older people. Everybody seemed at ease even though it was busy.
Verdict: This is an unusual place to categorize and rate. The food was average and at very reasonable prices but not so good that you just have to come back again. However, this is a place that I would come back to again but not necessarily come to on a regular basis. The service was extraordinarily efficient and polite but in more of an assembly-line manner as opposed to personality.
I give the place 3 stars as opposed to 2 because the service as aforementioned was better than great, the pancakes are good and the owner took the time to be detailed with me on the phone. But something is missing here, its missing the WOW factor that makes it stand out. It's not a place that I would have suspected to be as busy as it is to be honest with you yet the owner said it was slow for a Father's day! Go figure.
I think I was expecting better from this place than I thought, but overall it is a good solid no frills place that serves a variety of food in a timely manner. It's worth going to. Try it out and hopefully you will get the WOW that I didn't get. -

Rutherford, NJ
Used to enjoy this place for breakfast, despite the occasional bad service when the group was too large. But after trying their dinner have pretty much written them off.
The kids menu mac and cheese was ordered thinking it would be homemade but it was obviously Kraft out of the box, priced a lot higher than you pay at the dollar store.
When discussing it, we were told we couldn't expect them to actually make real mac and cheese and were given lots of attitude for being displeased, and further attitude on a return visit. -

Food was great! Looks small from outside but it's actually a decent size inside and decorated nicely with old photos of rutherford. The only complaint that I have is the service was fairly slow. The morning I went was not very busy so not sure how they handle more crowded times. We had the get up to request our waitress! The food certainly made up for the slow service!

This is my favorite breakfast/brunch place in NJ. I used to live in NYC, and I'm a bit of a brunch snob because of it. This a very simple, not fancy kind of place, but the food is very, very good, and the prices are reasonable.

LOVED IT!
Atmosphere: so cute and quaint, exactly what I want at a breakfast spot. Tuesday morning = empty and therefore perfect
Service - attentive and on point. You refill my coffee and keep it hot means you're awesome
Coffee - because that's what holds breakfast together. This was going to be the deal breaker, and it was a WINNER. Dont know what brand they use, but it's similar to The Stacks - delicious. Cuter mugs and saucers would have added bonus points
Food - I got the gringo omlette b/c it said it had homemade chili in it - delicous. Potatoes on the side looked burnt on the outside, but were a hearty compliment to my eggs. Perfect portion. Came with your choice of toast - well toasted and buttered. Good choice.
I couldnt resist and got a short stack of sweet potato pancakes as desert. I saved them for the end and let them get cold so I brought them home. Very thin style pancakes at this place if that's your thing. Im more into the thicker style, but the flavor made up for it.
---
Overall, I'm definitely coming back. I was sold when I saw the bar style counter near the cashier. I would totally park myself there for hours with a book, coffee, and breakfast. So glad yelp helped me find this spot. -

Manhattan, NY
It's delightful to find a "normal" restaurant with a wide selection of vegan options. I traveled over 20 miles to check this place out, and it was well worth it.
I gave it 5 stars not because the food was extraordinary (although it was very good), but because the combination of good food, good service, vegan options and good menu in this type of place is a very rare find indeed. A pancake house that can delight non-vegetarians and vegans alike? Wow!
It's not just breakfast. Vegan lunches and desserts are also on the menu. The management here really seems to have tuned in to a philosophy of pleasing every customer.
My waitress was really nice. Once she realized I was vegan, she brought me soy milk for my coffee and vegan butter for my toast without asking. It wasn't just me. Every table seemed to be taken care of by pleasant, attentive staff.
This place is a gem. Check it out. -

While scoping out a new neighborhood to put down roots in, we hit this joint up for lunch. Let's just say by the time we payed the check we felt confident Rutherford might be the town for us.
Was it the vegetarian/vegan offerings?
Was it the perfectly cooked crab cakes benedict, bursting with lump crab meat?
Was it the expertly whipped egg cream?
Okay, it was all of the above, but mostly the sweet potato fries. They're so good they'll make you want to slap your momma. And it's all served up by people so friendly it was jarring to our cynical, Manhattan-weary selves. Who are these people? And why are they so nice to us?
The one downside is you have to get your ass over there before 3 pm because, inexplicably, they close and do not offer dinner. -

Rutherford, NJ
A nice local breakfast and lunch joint with friendly staff and plenty to choose from, even if you're veggie or vegan. Prices are a bit on the moderate side, but that's par for the course if you are a local business trying to stay above the rising waters.
We tried the stuffed French toast with strawberries which looked decent upon arriving to our table, but tasted better than it looked. Not too sweet and not at all heavy. A good breakfast coupled with a cup of coffee.
Service was great and attentive, always checking on us and refilling our coffee and tea.
One small negative, though...there was a faint "basement" - like odor we noticed upon entering and then sitting at out table along the center partition. I'm not sure what it was, but it was noticeable. We'll keep one star for that, but give it four for it's homey-ness and local flavor. -

This place is great for breakfast and brunch. I love the omelets. Comes with roasted potatoes and bread of your choice.
What I really like about this place is that you can hang out with your friends for a while with good coffee and the wait staff will keep filling your cup for as long as you want to stay. Service is friendly and efficient.
I've had the pumpkin pancakes. Pretty good. -

San Francisco, CA
On my last trip to the East Coast, I stayed at the Sheraton by the Meadowlands. A quick Yelp search for "breakfast place" nearby directed me to Rutherford Pancake House. Well played, Yelp. Another great find.
I drove right past the restaurant on first try, despite my GPS proclaiming "you have arrived at your destination." So I made a semi-legal u-turn and found a spot right by the front door. I would normally try to find a free parking spot, but if they charge me the 1970s prices (a quarter an hour), I don't mind so much. 25 cents an hour! Are you listening, Gavin Newsom?
The place itself is as quaint as it is charming. They say it's "contemporary country decor," I say it's inviting. You want to come in and stay a while. Well, an hour, anyway. You don't want to spend another quarter.
The menu ranges from new age-y to traditional. You want something vegan? No problem; their menu has a large vegan section, which I promptly skipped. Instead, I opted for one of the Daddy-O combos, which were deliciously unhealthy and un-vegan: pancakes, eggs, bacon, home fries. The pancakes were fluffy, sweet and plentiful. I actually couldn't finish the third one, and that's saying something. It doesn't happen very often. The home fries and the eggs made me happy.
A special shoutout to my wonderful waitress. She could not have been more than 18 years old, and she was actually training someone else. She brought my Splenda and refilled my coffee at least 3 times, all the while smiling and calling me "sir." Boy, do I feel old.Listed in: I brake for breakfast!

I just found out about their extensive vegan menu and I can't believe this restaurant has been there and I never new it. I go to Rutherford all the time to go to Sweet Avenue Bake Shop and now I have yet another reason to travel that-a-way. I got the Stuffed French Toast w/ Strawberries and it was so GOOD! I mean, better than good. I also had a coffee with soy and I'm not complaining. Also at my table was the "Philly Cheese Steak" (seitan), which I tried and it was also so good. I can't wait to go back and try the other vegan items on the menu. There are seriously so many options.

I love the Rutherford Pancake House.
If you're vegan and have non-vegan friends and family members (or vice versa), this is the place to go. They have amazing vegan and non-vegan options. The food is delicious, the portion sizes are large and the price is great. And the staff is always so friendly and accommodating.
If you're in the Rutherford area, definitely check this place out. The only downfall is that they're only open until 3pm, so make sure you get there early!
