The RWB is a treasure! When I was young my Mom bought us yearly season tickets and it benefitted me in so many ways!  Choreographer Mark Godden and Conductor Bramwell Tovey came to be highly regarded Canadian artists and it was a pleasure to see their career's progress.

I have since lived in other cities where the Ballet companies are wonderful, yet clearly lacking the quality and prestige of the RWB.  However, the cost of attending the ballet in these cities is astronomical compared to the cost of tickets in Winnipeg.  Truly, I recommend anyone with an interest in dance to take advantage of the RWB if you are in Winnipeg.  (Hint: It is a great date to take a lady on, fella's.  A lot of little girl's dream of being dancer's at one time or another ;)

Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet is one of the most prestigious and recognized ballet companies in the world. It holds several distinctions but most notably is the second oldest ballet company & the longest continuously running ballet company in North America.

The company was founded in 1938 and whose history has been well documented in books, television documentaries, radio interviews, reviews, and a feature film. The Canadian Encyclopedia offers a tidy and brief history.

    An even more brief history:
The company operated as a semiprofessional company for many years and in 1953 garnered the first 'royal' title in the British Commonwealth. The RWB lost a great portion of their assets, including their entire collection of costumes, original music, choreographic scores, and sets, to a fire in 1954. The company survived and under the artistic direction of Arnold Spohr in the 60s and 70s was built into an international sensation. The RWB "no longer enjoys the high profile it maintained... during the Ballet Boom", however, their 2010 season with tours to Israel and the United States along being featured at the largest performing arts venue during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games as well as their continuing work with some of the world's most reputable choreographers reflect on the company's ability to retain its status as Canada's top ballet company.

The RWB's professional school began in 1980 and produced some of Canada's most regarded ballet dancers such as Evelyn Hart and David Peregrine that rose to international fame. The school operates out of its 1986 facility which includes 10 dance studios, physiotherapy room, administrative and production offices, box office and wardrobe department. This facility was officially opened in January 1988 and is home to the RWB Company and RWB School Professional and Recreational Divisions. To support the artistic training of young dancers, an integrated academic and dance program was developed in 1994, and a residence capable of housing up to 70 students was built in 1995 adjacent to the studio facilities.
