Port Coquitlam, BC
The Royal Tandoori is about 40 minutes away from my home but this is my favourite Indian food in the metro Vancouver area. It's well worth the trip. The butter chicken and allo gobi are dishes I have to have every time I eat here. They are incredibly delicious. The naan bread is always fresh. The portions are generous and the cost is reasonable.
The restaurant's ambiance isn't the greatest but the quality of the cooking more than makes up for it.
Tips:
Mild is still plenty spicy. I sometimes order medium and it's very spicy. I don't know of anyone who orders dishes any stronger then medium.
Be prepared if you are getting take out it as it can require up to a 45 minute wait. -

This will be new spot in this area ;)
I could tell it was a different type of butter curry sauce, based on its colour, a bit more red than orange, nevertheless, very flavourful & even some good kick for a 'medium' level.
plus the saffron rice was also delicious too; this time, more orange, w/ a few herbs thrown in ;)
Next time i'll try the garlic naan, as i'm on a carb diet ;)
Located a few blocks away fr Douglas College, just street parking. thank goodness it's cheap compared to City of Vancouver.
Relaxing decor, w/ a green earth tone theme to it. Cloth napkins, plenty of booth seating, and good customer service. -

(I have no idea when I wrote this because it was saved as a draft. Guess I forgot to submit it)
My boyfriend and I were feeling a bit lazy so decided to get something for delivery, but wanted to try something new as well. This seemed to be a good bet. The online menu was a little tough to parse but no biggie. When I called in to order, they had to call me back to give me the total. Is that so they can make sure I wasn't prank calling them?
The food was pretty good. I liked the garlic naan and wished we had gotten two orders instead of just one. The chicken korma was a bit salty for my taste, but that's about all I can complain about. This might have been the first time I've tried beef in Indian food as well.
Royal Tandoori just might be our go-to Indian place from now on :) -

I've visited many Indian restaurants in the Greater Vancouver area in the past 10+ years. This one has some of the best tasting food we've found so far. The butter chicken is great, the saag chicken is even better. The naan's great (not full of holes, not tough, not THICK like at other places), and their rice with peas goes well with it all. Samosas are good too. Unfortunately, because we like the above dishes so much we haven't tried much else.
As others have noted, the interior decor could be improved a bit, but I kind of like having the restaurant to myself. They play Indian dance music but not too loudly. The take-out portions seem to be larger than the dine-in ones, and they always offer a discount on orders over a certain amount.
I'd give full stars if the prices were a bit lower. We're more than happy to pay full price for this once in a while but we'd definitely go more often if the dishes were less expensive. -

Growing up across the river I have been spoiled with pretty fantastic Indian food. From Planet India to Taste of Punjab, there's plenty of good Indian eats across the river. In fact, I'd consider Planet India destination food... it is my favourite (see previous and multiple reviews on this subject). And if I may be frank, across the river, it's a fraction of the cost.
Having said that, we need a local spot. And so tonight, we checked out what appears to be everyone's favourite Indian in New West.
What we ordered:
Mutter Paneer
Chicken Korma
Rice
4 Naan
Raita
What we thought:
1. A little disappointed in the sauces. Korma and Mutter Paneer typically have very different sauces with a very different spice mix. One is creamy one is tomato based... One has distinct nutty notes, the other, does not. But not here! Nope, same sauce, one just had a little more cream added.
2. Seriously over-salted. Seriously. In fact, I'm going to go so far as to say it was inedibly salty. Might have been an off night? Good news is, we ordered the raita, which cut the salt, a little. On it's own, we would have wasted much more food.
3. The raita was just plain... weird. Tasty, but weird. Strangely gelatinous, with some sort of bean like chunks in it. I've never seen anything quite like that it on the East or West coast. But I'm not hating on it, because it saved my meal.
4. Service was pretty great, they were attentive and on us with waters. No complaints on this front - and if you read my other review for the day, you'd know that I've had recent bad experiences.
5. We like our food spicy. Medium was pretty accurate for our tongue, although I could have handled more.
Here's the thing: We will go back. I think there's a pretty good chance we just had a weird night. It was also nice to try something a little different from the aforementioned well-visited eateries. -

First time at this restaurant...read other Yelp! reviews and thought I would give it a try.
I live in New West and we only have a few options for good Indian cuisine. I have eaten at Indian Star many times and wanted to try something new.
Ordered the following:
Starter - Vegetable Pakora ( very good )
Meal:
Butter Chicken
Chicken Tika Masala
Lambe Vindaloo
Vegetable Korma
Ordered all in Medium heat... It was hotter than normal however still good. I found the Naan excellent however the Spinach version was rather salty. Overall the meal was excellent and I will be back.
Service was excellent... Met the chef and owner Jasminder Singh... Really nice fellow. -

The atmosphere in the restaurant is ok but nothing special.
My wife and I were there for a quick lunch so we only ordered an entree.
I ate the chicken with the home made curry. It was really delicious. The medium hot version is pretty hot for an European tongue. The wheat bread is fabulous accompanying that meal.
My wife ate an vegetarian dish with many peas. It was also very good but the medium hot version was to spicy for her. -

This little hole in the wall makes the drive into New West worth it. Its nothing fancy, but the food is great.
We started with the Vegetable Pakauras - deep fried perfection. They tasted really fresh with all the added herbs. The Allo Gobi is a spicy treat (I ordered mine Medium) with the perfect ratio of cauliflower to potatoes. The Tikka Masala that we ordered was the table favorite. The chicken was cooked just right - no dry chicken in sight! The sauce had a nice kick, but wasn't overpowering. The Mango Butter chicken was rich and delicious. A nice, sweet counterpart to the other dishes we tried. And the garlic Naan was just the thing to round out our feast - crispy and soft all at the same time.
The service was good and we all left more than satisfied and had a whole box of goodness to enjoy today! -

What a wonderful experience from Royal Tandoori !
I ordered #16 Akber Ki Pasand with lamb( medium spicy), and everything in this combo work out just great. In the end, the desert is really a breath taker. I will order from here again for sure.
By the way, it's kinda pricey if you are planning to eat it everyday:) -

I was really glad to discover this place on yelp - I recently moved to south Burnaby and hadn't found decent butter chicken until now. We also ordered the samosas, garlic naan, and Allo Gobi which were all super. It cost $47 for these plus 2 orders of rice (2 naans too) but lots of food means leftovers for a few meals too. I will definitely be calling again.
