Review from Vincent T.
North Attleboro, MA
This is a place I frequented years ago when I lived in East Boston. Made a stop here on a Sunday for lunch since I was dying for an old time roast beef sandwich.
Royal is this little fast food type joint. I remember back when the building was a Jack-in-the-Box restaurant in the 1970s. Now they serve thinly sliced roast beef sandwiches, burgers, fried & broiled seafood, and various other quick fare.
Just like old times, I had the super beef with sauce & cheese. Although the size has shrunk a bit and the price increased from years ago, the sandwich was just as I had remembered it. Thinly sliced lean beef, on an onion roll, with spicy BBQ sauce and American cheese. Classic North Shore of Boston roast beef unlike anywhere else.
Kids had bacon cheeseburgers which were more than enough for their hardy appetites. Add some perfectly cooked French fries and drinks and our meal was complete.
Years ago, this was THE place in the immediate area for the fried seafood platter. I can't attest to it now, but back then, it was definitely worthwhile. -

I used to walk/drive/ride by and wonder what Royal's was like. One day I finally went in with my husband and son. So mad at myself for waiting so long to try! Great, fresh food, reasonable prices, OK parking, easy to find on Bennington St. in East Boston. Roast beef, seafood (baked and fried), heaping piles of fries, other fresh wraps and tons of sandwiches. Everything I've tried has been wonderful. Their onion rings are the BEST. I like the thin, stringy ones with a lot of crunch.
I go back as often as I can. -

Been a customer for ALONG time here 10+ years...Food at one point was amazing and couldn't be touch. They styll give you a large fry that is basically 3supersize and a KING fry had a baby thats what it would amount too.
BBQ sauce is the best ever tho.
Prices gone up quality ain't what it used to be -

NO FLAVOR!!!
We drove from New York City to Boston through standstill traffic to eat some fresh, cheap seafood. The 18 y/o kid behind the counter seemed annoyed with us, and we felt rushed. We got the roast beef and combination (fried) seafood platter. Both came out fast. The platter was really hot, but the cole slaw and fried foods had no flavor. The roast beef sandwich, which also had no flavor, was lukewarm with a slice of unmelted cheese. Onion rings needed seasoning and were a little oily.
It wasn't even that cheap for the quality of food served.
2 Pros:
1) The tartar sauce.
2) A good samaritan/local told us we had no license plates. Thanks, nice man! (We did have a temporary plate taped inside rear window.) -

Great! Cheapest around! Quality Freshness at its best. Good Service. Small place. Seafood is excellent. Burgers are mediocre. Lived down the street for 4 years and I always loved it here. People are great and they always make you happy.
If you go here for what it is Fast, Good, Seafood and roast beef... AWESOME! -

I come here just about every weekend, when I'm in Eastie. Had it for lunch yesterday, most recently.
90% of the time, I go with a Super Beef with Cheese and Mayo (this is what I get at every Roast Beef place, to keep it fair and balanced). Royal's beef is similar to Kelly's, in my opinion. It is cooked a little more on the medium side and sliced a little thicker. Not a bad thing, by any means. You HAVE to get the super when you go here because it is served on a delicious onion roll. They get a bonus point for that - none of the other spots on my roast beef tour offer the onion roll (yet, at least).
We always get a small side of fries. Don't get any more than that - it is more than enough for 2 people to split. The fries are always nuclear hot and crispy and well salted. Perfect.
Like I mentioned previously, I come here a lot. In the past, I've tried some of their burgers which are REALLY good; thick and tons of options in the topping department. They also make a mean steak and cheese sub. I've also had the buff wings which were very good too!
The menu has tons of seafood offerings, hence the name "Roast Beef and Seafood". Lobster Rolls are 16 bucks, but I haven't tried them. They have lots of fried and broiled offerings, as well.
I've never done delivery but did take note that the other reviewers have had good experiences. Every time I order, the food is ready in about 15 minutes. If you need a medium iced regular to go with your super beef, there is a Dunks practically across the street.
Oh yeah, they have fantastic baklava for dessert!
With Easter coming up this weekend, not sure if I'll be around; but I should be checking back in here in a couple of weeks for sure. If you're driving home from Logan, you should definitely stop by. -

How good is Royal? I used to take the T there from Cambridge -- yup, Red Line to Green Line to Blue Line -- JUST to get their fried clams (and roast beef)! If you're looking for THE best fried clams in Boston, along with an amazing roast beef sandwich (as good as Liberty Bell, and of course better and cheaper than Kelly's), then look no further. It's time to visit Royal. 'Nuf said!

Just flew into Logan, tired---Friday evening. After departing Thrifty car rental, found this extremely popular hybrid between fast food joint and diner that was rather decent----in Orient Heights of East Boston, close to that historic roundabout.
Super casual food like fishburgers, fish and chips, roast beef, fried shrimp, grilled salmon, etc. Reco those---skip the clam chowder---thin and watery for my tastes. Homemade baklava for $2
Tons of customers came in during the half hour we were there for our little mini chowdown before heading for the Cape. -

Junior roast beef ($3.75) is plenty big enough for all but the most hearty appetites. Tasty as Nick's Roast Beef in Beverly, MA. Patrons are generally hard-scrabble, but this is Eastie.
Flat-panel TV is nicer than the TV in my home(!) and broadcasts sports for your viewing pleasure. Free refills on Cokes so order a small. -

Get the clam strips or roast beef. The roast beef is exactly what you are looking for in a beef. I personally go with the super three-way extra sauce on the side. Beef is thinly sliced and you aren't going to find a piece of gristle or fat (major turn-off to some roast beef joints). Super comes with an onion roll and this thing is perfect, moist (never dry or stale), warm and buttery.
The clam strips are unreal. They definitely keep cooking oil rotated because you never get fried food that tastes like anything but what you are eating. Breaded perfectly, tender clams and the fries are crispy every time. Get a small drink because it's free refills.
If you go during the week for lunch you're going to be eating with firemen, cops, contractors and Massport employees and people from Logan. The lines can be long but you'd never notice because they are quick at getting you in fed and getting you out. This place is real good and I've never had anything I didn't like. As other people indicated they have a big flat screen which is usually running ESPN or CNN depending on what's going on in current events. -

I absolutely love Royal...and love that their delivery to Winthrop is really fast. I always get roast beef with BBQ sauce and its amazing. Their Junior is pretty big, so if youre REALLY hungry go with the super. Its huge you can barely pick it up.
The fish sandwhich is also really good. I love their coleslaw..its not saturated in mayo, but i think its a clear dressing. Something is different and i love it.
The buffalo chicken is also really good. It has a hit of sweetness but like i said..is really good. Portion sizes are pretty big. I never even had Kelly's becuase im happy with Royal. -

Well for one, I'm the mayor of this place on Foursquare, and that's because this is my lazy night, fall back spot for quick food. You can order in, pick up, or have them deliver to anywhere in the area. Also, their chicken fingers sandwich on a sub roll has never let me down. If you're really adventurous in the summertime, you could easily pick up a few sandwiches and watch the sun set across the street at constitution beach.
So I love this place! -

Super Roast Beef sandwich! Get it on an onion roll with everything on it, you will not be dissapointed.
I saw some great reviews for this place here and decided to stop in for a casual lunch. I had the roast beef special #1, as I described above, it was great. For $7.50 you get a huge packed sandwich with a side of fries. I planned to split the sandwich with my boyfriend along with some fried seafood. Sandwich was 5 stars! Fries were ok. They could of been done a little longer. We also got the fried clam strips. I wasn't that much of a fan cause I thought they would be the whole clam (didn't know they were just parts off the clam) but he liked them. The home made tarter sauce was great. I rate this roast beef sandwich over Kelly's. The beef was tastier, the onion roll rocks, and it was nicely constructed. Service was friendly. The prices are a steal. There is a nice park/small beach across the street, I suggest getting some stuff to go and eating it at the park overlooking the water.
Update: Returned shortly after to have the fried clam bellies. They surely were mightly and outstanding! The small boat portion was enough to satisfy a craving for 2. The seafood was fresh. Tarter sauce was memorable. This place is always busy and I know why now! -

This place has been in Eastie for a long time and is a favorite for people also visiting Shay's beach.
I always get the Super Roast beef and it NEVER disappoints !
Their fries are always fresh and crisp . They have a BBQ sauce for the Roast Beef sandwich and I dip my fries in there which makes any meal a heavenly experience.
There are also very well known for their seafood and clams....
This is one of those places you can't read to much about ... you just gotta go !! -

I was trapped in Chelsea one night, after Midnight. At the hotel we were staying, the staff tried to push us towards Domino's Pizza and "open till 3am" Chinese food.
Neither appealed, so a meandering drive led us here. While we couldn't get a straight answer about whether seafood or roast beef was better (no specialties?), I took a gamble on Pastrami. Delicious midnight-famish food.
Open late. Good old salty french fries. Cheap, and very, very FAST. I'm not from the area, but my travel-mate and I both agreed that this experience at Jimbo's changed our overall view of our stay in Chelsea - a cool part of town. -
Review from Kevin S.
Seems some reviewers don't get it.
This AIN'T Kelly's. Why compare it? Now....Bill & Bob's? That's a fair comparison.....or the former Riley's Roast Beef? Same.
Ok, since we have that out of the way. I've been a regular of Royal's since the early 80's, when I was working nights at a local parking lot or moving cars for that red car rental company.
Now that I'm 3000 mi away, I'll usually make a stop at Royal's when I'm in town.
I'm a fan of their Super. Nice onion roll. I don't always get BBQ sauce, but occasionally it's nice to add a small kick.
Clams aren't bad...again, this isn't Kelly's.
The only thing "wrong" with Royal? Size of the smaller portions. and the parking. Wow! There are times you can't even get in the lot. But that's supposed to be a good thing? Right?
Anyways, want decent shaved roast beef or pastrami? Same for clams or onion rings? Then Royal is the place. Especially if you don't want to make the drive to RB or Saugus for Kelly's and it's after 11 pm. -

I LOVE THIS PLACE.
Each item I try never seems to disappoint. My mom and I chose to go here instead of a restaurant week lunch which I was going to treat her too. We got a large fried clams and it was golden and delicious. They make their own tartar sauce too and I fall in love with a place that can make their own delicious relish-y mayo goodness. Their roast beef is yum and the junior size can fill my tummy up. Their rice pilaf is fluffy and buttery perfect as well. I give this place 5 stars because I haven't been disappointed yet, but impressed for such an unassuming place in EAST BOSTON!
and the prices are cheap! you can't beat a place like this and I think everyone that goes here knows it. -

Last weekend my husband and I had a craving for fried seafood as good as we had last summer on Cape Cod, so we headed over to Royal. We asked the guy at the counter what was good and he said "everything". He was not wrong.
We split a Super Roast Beef sandwich and a combo. Everything was delicious. The roast beef was delicious. Perfectly cooked, not too fatty, and the onion roll was delicious. The free toppings? Genius.
The combo platter came with fried shrimp, scallops, clams, and haddock. It was dee-lish. I've never had shrimp so big that were fried. They were ridiculous.
The onion rings were fantastic too. I've dreamt about them all week. Can't wait to go back. -

We ordered lunch from here today at work. I got the chicken cesar wrap. I ate about half of it when a coworker says, "is that a cockroach?' I never want to hear that, but especially not when I am eating from the same place. So I did not find a bug in my wrap but I looked at his fried fish sandwich and there was a bug squished into the bun. I couldn't tell if it was a cockroach or a moth but there were wings and it was definately a bug. Needless to say we all threw out our sandwiches and I feel nauseous.

Cozy little place with some amazing burgers but my favorite is their buffalo chicken. Some of the best I have had. Generous portions for a great price and a nice place to just relax. Doesn't just feel like fast food and their service is great. I always come here for a late night munch.

I revisited Royal recently, after I had not been here in several years. I don't know what happened, but now I feel like it is 100x better.
The clam strip plate is delicious! It comes with ample amounts of perfectly golden fried clams, which are somehow light and crispy. Even there fries are quite good. The coleslaw that accompanies is only -ish, but that's not what I came here for.
They also have a fantastic grilled shrimp and feta salad, which is not on the big menu, but it is hand-written on a piece of paper behind the cash register. I am slightly addicted to this salad. The shrimps taste like they have a light oil and citrus marinade on them and then they are lightly grilled and placed in a salad with feta. The feta is warm and slightly melted because of the warm shrimp. YUM!!
Also, very affordable! -

I love Royal's Roast beef.. this place is amazing..I have ordered from here for years and their service has never slacked. I would give them 6 stars if i could..
When you order 'delivery' they tell u it'll be about 30-45 minutes, and then ur like damn, im hungry now... but that food gets there in 20-30 and its HOT. Sometimes theyre swamped and u can tell but overall everything is good here. I recommend the fish, chicken fingers (#5 with barbecue sauce on the side) or a wrap but just about anything from here is good. Must admit though that they could be a little bit more neat with they way they dress their burgers, but apart from that BOMB!!! -

I've been eating at Royals since I was little and the food was always great but recently it has completely changed. The last four times in a row I ordered a delivery it was either cold, messed up, or just flat out wrong. The delivery drivers are very nice but the staff within the restaurant can be very unpleasant and rude, and are consistently making mistakes. Honestly I've sworn off the place for the time being until they step up their game and hire some people that know what they're doing

Simply one of the best places in New England to get fried seafood in terms of price and quality. The other items on the menu are also very good, particularly the buffalo chicken and roast beef. It's a family owned business and if you are not happy with the quality of the food (as was one yelper) just ask to speak with the managers and they'll be sure to make it right. This place is a real gem and it's worth the ride on the T or through the tunnel to get to!

I noticed this place while visiting friends and I eventually moved pretty close to it. And then I discovered their awesome crab roll. It is super yummy. You get more crab than Kelly's gives you and their fries are really good too.
I also had the fish chips another time, and that was good, but not as good as the crab roll. Although their tartar sauce is definitely homemade just like they claim and oh so delicious.
I tried the pizza roll which looks like an egg roll but filled with tomato sauce and cheese. Yummy, just like their mozzarella sticks. Service is fast. I really should live farther away since it's such a temptation.Listed in: My Neighborhood

What's looks like your typical sandwich/fish takeout is a notch above the rest. You'll find the menu familar, with roast beef sandwiches, an array of subs, fried seafood dinners and anything else that can be thrown into a fryer, BUT, it's all very good. The food here won't leave you regretting your meal choices. The roast beef is great, and proves that Kelly's isn't the only place around for a decent one. I love their haddock and the buffalo chicken sandwich. Oh, and the rice pilaf is delicious!! I love having that instead of french fries. Mmm mmm.

I love Royal. It's within walking distance from where I live, so it can't get much better! I've had their roast beef, chicken tenders, burgers, steak tips, salads, fries, and everything is great! I don't like seafood, so I can't give an opinion on that, but I've had friends and relatives tell me it's very good. My only complaint is that they're not open until 3 a.m. on the weekends, because I'd really love to go here after the bars/clubs close, but that's just me being selfish. :)

I bet Royal scares the hell out of Kellys - if it doesn't, it should. Fried calimari plate is my personal favorite, but the super roast beef is delish. The prices aren't through the roof and the portions are big. Love this place for takeout. I'm the guy driving away almost getting into four accidents because I'm too busy stealing a french frie or a fried squid. I've chosen this place over Kellys in the past. You will too.

Ok, now I don't think that my review will actually get anyone to change from there neighborhood roast beef joint to Royal. But if I can get one person to change stop wasting their money on Kelley's and go to a real roast beef joint than I have done my job!!!
I've been to other place in the area for Roast Beef - Mike's and Beachmont, but honestly, Royal beats out all of them.
My boyfriend and I frequent Royal since it is 1) only 7 min from our place in East, 2) they are ALWAYS open (at least till like 2am), and 3) they deliver, boo-yah! We usually do take out since the place is really small, but they do have a couple clean tables if you don't live in the area. We went this past Saturday and got a supper beef, a regular beef, large onion ring, and spinach roll for like $18!! I always get my beef with sauce and onion and their sauce is great - slightly spicy, great vinager bbq flavor. You HAVE TO try the Spinach roll - it's like a giant mozzarella stick with garlic and greens in won-ton wrapper. TO DIE FOR!!! Added plus to places like Beachmont is they have awesome seafood - fried clams and lobster roll are worth the money.
My only gripe is that the onion that comes on the beef is chopped up, not ring style and tends to fall out while you're eating it. Slight pain, but no enough to take away a star. -

I love this place. I mean, I REALLY LOVE IT! They have a great selection- the roast beef is pretty darn good, not bloody and gross- and they get bonus points for having actual horseradish. The salads are AWESOME! My personal favorite is the Steak Tip Caesar Salad- you know, when you want to order a salad, but don't want to be too healthy about it. The Chicken Kabob salad is also delicious. Actually- EVERYTHING I've tried has been consistently yum-tastic! I can't say enough about their AMAZING seafood combo- which will easily feed two people (or one famished fish-eating machine). The delivery time is also fantastic; Not once has it taken more than what they quoted when I placed the order, and usually takes much less. Even the delivery guys are nice and friendly- but I guess if you deliver to the same place ALL THE DAMN TIME that's bound to happen! Order from Royal- you definitely won't be disappointed.

This past Saturday, my date and I were on a mission to find succulent fried clams and roast beef. We have been a devoted follower of Kelly's for the longest time but over the years it has become more and more mass-marketed rather than that hidden gem it use to be. So naturally we go on yelp and search up roast beef and fried clams in the boston area. Royal stood out since all the reviewers seem to know Kelly's. Excited and hungry we drove to Royal.
We were feeling a little lost as we drove down this residential street with houses on both sides then we saw the lighted sign. There are a few parking spots in front of the shop and on the side. The place was completely empty but it was 11 PM on a Saturday night. The menu was crazy extensive with everything from subs to baklava. We knew exactly what we wanted, I got the regular, my date got the super (on onion roll) with bbq sauce and a large order of fried clams.
We sat in front of the counter drooling, waiting for our food. It was kind of weird when they actually have people bring the food to you instead of just calling you over to grab it like Kelly's. The first turn off was definitely the size and the wrapping. My regular looked like a McDonald's hamburger. It was completely flat. If that's the regular, I can't imagine what the junior looks like. The super wasn't that much better. The diameter of the bun is bigger but it was just as flat. We looked at each other and took our first bites. The bun was nice and toasted but that's about all that was good. The bbq sauce tasted very artificial, like someone tried way too hard to make it bbq-y, the beef was dry and tasteless. The super was about the same. The first few bites we convinced ourselves that it was just because the edges of the roast beef is always more well done so the rare parts in the center should be better...nope...just the same dry tasteless weird bbq stuff. We finished it anyway since we haven't eaten anything since 3 in the afternoon.
At this point we were really really looking forward to the fried clams since the sandwiches left little be to desired. The wait was a little awkward, since it was a good 10 mins after the sandwich when the clams came. We giddily ripped open the bag to the smell of greasy clams. Emphasis on the greasy part...the little things (they really were smaller than usual) were practically glistening in oil. I stabbed one out with my fork and looked at it for a second before throwing it in my mouth. Bite...crunch...grittiness...ewwww...it's sand-y.
Ok, maybe it's just the first one since my date is just munching away. Second one, less greasy since the paper bag has absorb some at this point. Bite...still gritty. At this point, my date noticed my funny faces and fessed up and said his are gritty too. We ended up throwing the rest away.
I'm going to stick with Kelly's from now on. I'll pay for quality AND quantity anyday.
