Review from Laura C.
Toronto, ON
My fiance and I had a really great time on the trail today, and it's so close to home!
It was definitely a hidden gem, and thanks Martin S. from this thread! http://www.yelp.ca/top...
We started at the North Trailhead, on Meadowvale, north of Old Finch Road (see map : http://www.rougepark.c...)
We decided to follow a series of 6 Geocaches (http://www.geocaching....), among some other ones, that lead us off the main path to a secondary trail. You'll see them vividly, as they branch off, and with minimal bushwacking, they actually do go somewhere, most times. At some point we did get off track, and all you need to do is find the main trail again (some times at a steep climb, but doable)
The first 5 in the series give you coordinates until you find the 6th one. During our hike we also encountered some of the other ones, that led us to this man made marshland near the South Trail Head, just walk north a little, and you'll see signs.
It was fun to see the wildlife, but you also share the trail with some geese that like to poop, be careful!
The main trail was kind of quick and boring to be honest, and glad that we only took this route back (2.5km was an easy walk on an easy terrain).
After the hike we went to the Walmart for ice cream. Yum.
P.S. I left some Yelp Elite pins and "You've Been Yelped" cards in some of these caches. woohoo! -

As a formerly avid hiker, one of the things I was bummed about when I moved back to Toronto was the lack of any good hiking in the GTA. I was complaining about it to a co-worker to which he replied "What? ever heard of Rouge River??", to which I replied "No".
Anyway, its apparently the largest urban park in North America (whatever the hell that means) and If you look on a map its quite a large green patch relative to any other parks in the area.
The hike there is nice..for Toronto area. There are 4 trails. The website says the longest one is 4.5 hours but i don't think they take much more than 2.5 even if you are slow.
As far as the views go, you get some decent views of the river from a couple of vistas, and you get riverside in various places. The terrain is mixed from hilly to slightly jagged trails, but there's some fairly wide open paths too.
Seeing as how i'm spoiled by real mountainous hiking from living in california for years, I can only be so impressed with this hike, but its definitely worth checking out. Only real option in the GTA as far as I know.
