Review from Lauren N.
We're allowed to review our own high schools right? I mean, you can't really give a school a rating unless you've been there. And I promise to keep as objective as possible.
Overall, I don't think I regret spending my "good years" at Shep, even if a lot of my friends went to other high schools on the north side of town. While it wasn't the same without peers I really knew, Shep still had its good qualities. They have an amazing department of staff who really know their stuff. The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is available here, full and partial, along with one of the best drama and music school programs in the city.
Of course, it wasn't just all about the arts; Shep has a kick-ass football and basketball team too. As a result, it's a very competitive school. I think it's always in silent rivalry with Archbishop and Old Strathcona.
The school has two floors, with a library and study space on each level. Cafeteria space is limited but serves decent lunch surprises, if my memory hasn't faded completely. The school gym is also equipped with a full-fledged fitness centre for students, to ensure physical health in addition to mental and intelluctual stimulation.
Shep also has a great location, right in between the Woodcroft and Westmount areas. The Westmount shopping centre (notice I didn't say mall) is across the street, and the bus terminal is right outside the school parking lot. The Woodcroft library is just across the football field, and the school is also conveniently located beside the Peter Hemingway pool and fitness centre, and Coronation Park. After all, it's all about location, location, location.
So I'm proud to say that Shep was my high school. The IB program really helped me prepare for university, as it got me into my study habits early. I still remember some of my teachers here, from time to time. They're the teachers who really stand out in my memory, and who I believe helped make a difference in my life. Thanks for the memories, Ross Shep! -
Review from Paula K.
Shep was my high school also! I have fond memories of those days, and am even still in touch with numerous classmates (thanks to Facebook). It was known as "preppy Sheppy" in those days, and had an academic focus. I liked being across the street from what was then a fun mall (Westmount) and right near a bus terminal, making getting back and forth relatively easy. I also liked the size of the school. I was sort of an outsider in junior high, but when I got to Shep there were so many students that everyone fit in somewhere, and pretty soon I had a small circle of friends I was able to hang out with regularly. Many of my noon hours were filled spending time in the computer lab (one of my best friends is the guy who supervised the lab!) and later on I became the editor of the school newspaper, The Thunderbolt. This was way before desktop publishing and digital cameras. However, even in those analog times, I was still known as the "girl with the camera." Things certainly have not changed a whole lot! Some of the teachers who taught me are still there, many are gone, and some of the people I went to school with are teachers there now. I have a lot of wonderful memories from those days, and very few bad ones, so all in all, I think that sums it up!
