Rob & I went here on March 16th to have an early St. Patty's celebration without being stuck in a massive crowd. I'd like to mention that we were there in the afternoon and the place was still pretty quiet. There were quite a few "sections" of tables to choose from, but I was intrigued by the upstairs because I've heard many-a-ghost story about it (I understand it used to be a funeral home quite a few years ago).
The waitress told me the upstairs was closed, which made me even more intrigued...so we picked a seat on the "stage" near the fire place, so I could see directly up the stairs. I saw shadows and movement, but it turned out to just be staff members, I was almost hopeful to see a ghost just to say that I did.
So Rob & I decided to order the Nachos Supreme (sharing nachos is just something we do) and when it came to our table, it looked big enough to feed at least four people lol. It did take us close to 45 minutes to finish it, and I was so full I felt sick. We would have stayed longer, but a band showed up and started setting up their equipment right next to us so we got out of their before one of us got hit with a passing guitar or something. Going to the notorious 'Rose & Crown' is something we've been wanting to do for awhile now, so methinks someday we shall return, but I would really like to check out the upstairs at least once. -

The Rose & Crown remains one of my favorite places to have drinks with friends. It's central, always happenin', and they have live music. Besides it being one of my fave hangout spots, they also have really good food. I also find the drinks tend to be pretty cheap. My problem with the Rose is the SERVICE. It is absolutely horrible. My sisters decided they wanted to celebrate their birthdays here back in February, so I called and confirmed a table for a bunch of people. When I got there (I happened to be the first one there), I asked one of the servers about our table. She looked at me like I had 3 heads and in the rudest tone possible said "Umm no...I don't think so." I said yes, I spoke to someone here THIS MORNING and they confirmed it. Turns out we did have a table, she just wanted to be a bitch for some reason. I've been back a bunch of times since, and it's always ridiculously packed (I also don't agree with paying $5 cover to get into a PUB, but I digress) and almost impossible to get a drink. Still, I love it here so I keep coming back. Well this past weekend I was here both Friday and Saturday...on Friday it was an unplanned stop in and after venturing through the herd we got to the bar and ordered drinks. Watched the bartender make the drinks, set them on the other side of the bar, and start helping other people. We stood there for about 15 minutes until we finally signaled another guy and pointed out our drinks. He gave them to us free of charge, which was really the only positive thing that came out of it after being ignored. Fast forward to Saturday night...SAME bartender, taking forever to serve 2 cougars their shots, having a conversation with another employee, and enjoying his big glass of pop WHILE AN ENTIRE BAR IS STANDING THERE WAITING. Literally we stood there for 10 minutes RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM and he completely ignored us! When I finally got his attention and ordered our drinks, he didn't even look at me. RUDE. Not to mention the server for our section...sometimes she was there, but then she would disappear for an hour. I'll likely continue going because I always have fun here, but the employees will never see a tip from me unless they start paying attention to their customers!

I love going to Rose & Crown when in Calgary. I love a good fish and chips and they truly deliver with their Tankhouse Fish N' Chips. Made with Haddock it's a Tasty change from the usual cod. It always arrived steaming hot with a crispy golden brown coating. Throw is a few shots of malt vinegar couple with the tasty chips, cole slaw and a Rickards Red and I've entered nirvana. On the rare occasion I'll opt for the Bison Sheppard's Pie, almost as good as the fish.
Great selection of beer and at times super good live entertainment. Décor is very old school classic pub, super cool. The place at time overflows with typical friendly Calgary crowed, yes that's a plus.
Why only 4 stars, I've found that most of the other dishes while good don't come close to living up to the two dishes above.
Remember Crown & Rose when craving fish and chips and beer. -

It's all about The Library. And by that I mean the Rose & Crown is good on the bottom floor, but if you are able to get the little nook they call The Library. With couches, some faux-book decor and a big flat screen, it is the perfect place to commandeer when you're out with friends.
As for the rest of it, what can I say, the Rose & Crown is a solid bar/pub with a good selection of beers on tap, a spacious and laid back atmosphere and some pretty good service. They even have a lot of live music which is always nice to see.
Update: I've been back to Rose & Crown a few more times and the more I go, the more I have issues with teh way they run the place. The service I've had as of late is lacking. Being left on a patio for 15 minutes with no server was surprising, considering it was a sunny Friday afternoon after work. I had to go tot he bar myself. Then, despite teh bar beign packed, there was no bartender to be found.
I also have a severe issue to Rose & Crown having quite literally half the tables in the establishemnt reserved. There were plenty of free tables upstairs and downstairs but all were reserved. We eventually found a table, then watched as some of the reserved tables had no one show up and sit at them for two full hours. And this was a key time for walk-up business.
I just find it is slipping and despite having a good bar, it certainly isn't cheap. -

Good service, good beer, good food, good ambiance, great location with parking, reasonable prices; this place seems to have it all!
I had the sliders (4 mini burgers). Wish they had put some variety in that, eating 4 identical burgers was a bit boring and bordered on gluttony. They were good but I left one behind. I also had their soup of the day, which was a homemade delight.
Nice to have the choice of a spacious heated outdoor deck and the typical pub interior. -

The staff are a delight, the pub fare is consistent and hearty, and the live music is wonderful.
**The only ongoing critique I have heard (and even made once myself) was that paying at the door all the time was a bit of a bummer. I realize that the band needs to get paid, but some folks are actually just interested in eating and are paying a premium.
Great all around pub in the DT 17th area. -

Originally a funeral home built in the 1920s, the Rose & Crown is rated as one of the top 4 haunted places in Calgary. Believed to be shared with the presence of ghosts, the Rose & Crown is one of Calgary's oldest pubs. That said, it's no wonder it's got as much character as it does...ghosts aside.
Whether you're stopping in for 19 cent wings on Wednesday nights, or whether you're staying awhile to catch some live music on Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, Rose & Crown is always a good time.
With 28 different beers on tap (that are served as early as 11am), the Rose & Crown has plenty of assortment on their menu to ensure you'll find the perfect combination item for that brew.
Although I, personally, don't love the idea of hanging out with ghosts in an old funeral home until wee hours of the morning, I can most definitely attest to the fact that there is no other experience that quite parallels that of the R & C. -

I really the Rose & Crown.
I will be the first to admit that the service is not always top notch, but I love it nonetheless.
For a pub, I find their food to be really good. I've had a few of the different burgers and I've never been disappointed. Their prices aren't outrageous (which is something rare nowadays) so that's also a bonus.
I really like the atmosphere at Rose & Crown. It's an old place and that gives it a really unique feel. It's classic and yet it's cozy. It's just got a great feeling to it.
I like hanging out here with friends because it's laid back and relaxed.
If you haven't been - check it out! -

On the weekends, the Rose & Crown is always packed, at least every time I've been there. They've usually got a live band playing, there are a lot of different places to sit... and yes you can go upstairs.
The best story I've got about the Rose & Crown was last time I was there with some gal pals. We were seated near the back on the main floor and our server came walking by with a pack of matches. She kept walking a few steps, lighting a match, blowing it out and then waving it around a bit. We looked at her questioningly and she stopped to explain that someone in the vicinity kept farting, and the matches were supposed to eliminate the smell. We certainly didn't smell anything but the aroma of the burning match while she was around. So I guess it worked!
Straightforward and to the point, that's the vibe I get from the Rose & Crown. It's my kinda place. -

I've been going here for a while now and have never been disappointed. It can get too busy and the line-ups too long at the door, but the Rose and Crown is a great pub in Calgary.
I've actually seen a few really good bands perform here (I'm surprised because I've seen a lot of terrible bands in this town) and there's always a good vibe at the Rose and Crown. They have a decent-sized patio and great beer selection. Just don't try going on a Friday night at like 11 pm. If you do, expect to wait a while to get in. But then expect to have a great time.... -

Last night, I hung out with a bunch of buddies in this amazingly old country pub. Since, it was Wednesdays, wings were only $0.19 and were good. I would suggest not ordering the Salt & Pepper wings because they were too salty.
Enjoy! -

I was here a couple of weeks ago with friends from work, and was impressed.
First impression was that I had walked into a warm, friendly "real' place. One of the things that I found cool was the fact that the pub consisted of various areas on various levels, kind of like you were in a big house with parties happening on all levels.
My group was on a lower level up and down a staircase ( if that makes sense). The place was hopping at 8pm on a Friday night. Hopping as in very busy and very loud. Despite the crowds, our server was efficient and fast. She was dealing with multiple bar tabs, noise and did so with friendliness and speed.
I didnt order any food , but saw the food someone at our table ordered. It was shepherds pie and was huge. I was told it was delicious, and it certainly looked good. Drinks were reasonable. I had a JD and coke and it was six bucks.
When I was getting ready to leave there was a band playing in the main area and the place was jumping.
The Rose and Crown has a parking lot, but parking is at a premium. You may want to cab it.
Interesting tid bit... the Rose used to be a funeral home, and is supposedly one of the most haunted places in Alberta. Pretty cool. Check out this place if you want a rollicking good time in a place that feels like a real pub.. i have a feeling it will continue to do very well for a very long time. -

Capturing the feel of an old country pub from the shires in the United Kingdom is the Rose and Crown on Fourth Street SW. The interior wood finish gives the Rose and Crown an extremely classy feel. As a tremendously popular venue for over 15 years, the Rose and Crown still continues to throw down night after night, hosting 30 beers from around the globe at their three different bar areas. Like any pub, there is plenty of seating and even the comforts of large plush chesterfields and roaring fireplaces. Live rock is performed by bands on Friday and Saturday nights starting at 9 pm. They have space out back to set up tents for larger shows and functions.
Service can sometimes be slow, but this is made up for by their exquisite pub cuisine, and the smile on the face of the bartender. -

The only reason I keep coming back to this Pub is because it's across the street from my apartment. I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone who has the option of mobility.
First of all, the service at this place is awful. The food is often SUPER slow (We're talking 45 minute waits on wings night) and the orders are always somehow incorrect. AND They charge a stupid amount extra if you ask for hot sauce or any other condiment.
I must say, the wings on Wednesdays are cheap and pretty tasty. If you're willing to put up with some terrible service and a loud and busy envrionment, why not give them a try?
I can say, though, from repeat experiences that this place is not a quality joint. Nuff said. -

This is a perfect pub. Great pub-food, good beer selection, decent price and an amazing wing night (Wed). A perfect place to "take the piss" out of your mates.

The Rose & Crown is alright. It's nothing fantastic, but it's alright.
Service can be slow and the johns are usually nasty, so consider yourselves warned.
