Rogue's Roost is one of those places you might never notice when you're walking along Spring Garden Road. I always wonder why their sign doesn't focus more on the fact that they make their beer right on the premises. All these people walking by are missing some pretty awesome brews.
My girlfriend and I love to come down to Rogue's Roost where I usually, but not always, have their IPA and she usually, but not always, has their raspberry wheat beer. Both are consistently excellent but I love the fact that it never tastes quite the same.
Rogue's has a nice bar with a copper top, a wonderful sitting area overlooking the busy street and an underused mezzanine that overlooks the bar area. There is also a small patio outside, just a step down from the sidewalk.
The food is standard pub fare but it's pretty good. This place is really about the beer though, which is why I always return!Listed in: My Halifax favorites, Maritime brewpubs

I had never been to Rogue's before, and I would definitely give it another try. I think the appeal is their in-house brewed beers, but as I don't drink beer ... I was unable to judge them. They did make an excellent spiced and ginger. Friends ordered nachos and they were quite tasty.
I was also quite impressed with the bartender. We showed up at 10:00pm on a slow Monday night and he did not once make us feel that he was annoyed because he could go home if we were not there. He also let us know that the kitchen was closing in 10 minutes as soon as we go in so we were able grab some grub before it was too late.
Fun times. -

I've been to the roost a number of times since moving to Halifax so long ago (5 years almost, scary)
I don't think I've ever gone intentionally though. It's one of those places that isn't packed full of guzzler's while other places cannot fit another soul inside. Although, it is busy when other places are not. I don't get it?!
I've tried an array of their beer. My fave is the Raspberry (of course it is). I have never had an actual meal at the Roost, mostly just apps. Recently, we tried the Spinach Dip which was very, very good and cheesy.
The Roost has one of the best atmosphere's in the city in my opinion, the high tables at the window allow for people watching any time of day! It's warm but dark which makes for a great late night beer with friends. Service is decent although can be slow - the servers are all very friendly.
So I will unintentionally visit again! -

Rogues is my go-to place when I feel like a beer and maybe a bite.
There are five or so micro-brews on tap as well as a selection of local and imported beers. I love the cream ale and the raspberry wheat is a great choice on a hot summer day.
The food isn't bad either; if you're a fan of steak-cut fries, this is one of the only places I've seen them lately.
It could also be a good date spot. They have a small seating area on the 2nd floor that is quite cozy and cute. Give it a try :)
They also always have great music playing and trivia on Wednesday nights. So if you just want to enjoy a beer with friends, or even solo, this is a great option for the Spring Garden area. -

Food was horrid. Had seafood pasta that tasted frozen, bland and sauce was thick and pasty. Caesar salad was watery. Chicken quesadilla flavorless. Beer was good, service was mediocre. Waste of $62.

If there's a fixture on the Halifax pub scene, Rogue's Roost is certainly it. Have you heard of anyone not liking this place? They have great craft beers, a nice atmosphere, one of the city's original trivia nights and as I discovered on my most recent visit, darn tasty food.
My other half adores this place. When I'm not dragging her to a new restaurant that I want to try and get her to choose where we're going to eat, there's a very good chance that it's going to be Rogue's. Upon arriving we were promptly seen to and drink orders were taken while we perused the menu, although we both knew what we were going to get. After hearing a decent amount of hype about their pulled pork sandwich from my girlfriend, I decided I had to try it. Served with steak-cut fries and house made coleslaw, our identical meals arrive piping hot after a short wait. It is painfully difficult to resist delicious looking fries that are straight out of the fryer and I'm pretty sure both our mouths suffer, but it hurts so good. The fries have a bit of crispness, are seasoned nicely and being thick cut are soft and potatoey on the inside. The coleslaw, while fresh and crisp, is a little on the bland side. The star of the show arrives on a bun that doesn't look like your standard store-bought fare, and stands up nicely to the saucy pork. The pork itself is sweet and a bit smoky, although it could stand to be a wee bit juicier or saucier. I like my pulled pork sammies messy!
All in all, it was a solid meal and was on par for Rogue's - dependable food and drink with steady, friendly service. Like the rest of you reading this, I'll be back to Rogue's before too long.Listed in: SGR, Pub Grub, Trivia time

I love beer. I love Rogues IPA as much as any beer that I have ever had. I also love Nachos. Yep, they are pretty great too. But the best thing on that menu is the steak sandwich. For the money, you just cannot go wrong. The staff are great - but be warned, lunch on Friday sees the kitchen come to a standstill. So just relax and enjoy your suds. The only reason this place isn't a '5' is the washrooms. They are nasty.

Great lunch spot. Great veggie burger, delicious IPA, and (usually) quick service.
Service can be spotty and the bathroom is fairly unpleasant, but it's good spot for a great beer and a fun time. -

Ahh rogue's roost. I have been going here for roughly 14 years and have always ordered the same thing. Until today! I started ordering the California wrap when I was a teen, out for dinner with my Dad. It was always delicious so I never stopped ordering it. Over the years nothing has changed, the wrap is always the same - except for when they made the switch from white tortillas to whole wheat.
I went for lunch today and got razzed for always getting the same thing so I went outside of the box and ordered a burger. DELISH! It was juicy and flavourful and the french fries are probably my favourite in the city - thick, hand cut and always crispy!
Its 3 hours later and my stomach hurts and I am still full so next time I will go back to the lighter fare of my delicious fave, the California wrap.
On the beer side of things, the microbrew is delish. Not a fan of things so sweet, the raspberry didnt work for my palate, but I do enjoy the IPA.
Service wise, it can be hit or miss, but after so many years I know what to expect and it doesnt bother me! -

I've been to the Rouge's Roost a few times now, and it's always enjoyable.
For the longest time, I didn't even know that it was also a microbrewery; you'd never guess from the exterior. But, once you're inside, you get a great view of the street below inside the somewhat hard-to-describe interior. Part pub-feel, part observatory deck, I guess you could say.
Service is fine, overall. I particularly enjoyed a raucous exchange between a server and one of my friends when my friend exclaimed that, "the nachos are TOO spicy!"... the server humorously proclaimed him weak, and they bantered back and forth for a few minutes. Majority at the table said the nachos were great.Listed in: It's a Party!, Night on the Town

Things that could use some work at Rogue's Roost: the sporadically efficient service.
Sometimes you have your food and drinks in minutes, but unfortunately on my most recent visit we waited more than 1/2 an hour. When you're out for your lunch break and you don't have tons of time to spare, this is a bit long to wait for a chicken sandwich. A tasty chicken sandwich mind you, but still... that's a long wait.
Things that are awesome at Rogue's Roost: the fries (regular or sweet potato, either way you can't go wrong), the raspberry beer (it's just so good), and the menu in general (lots of selection, and good prices).
So, all things considered, if you're looking for good pub-food at a decent price and fantastic beer selection, Rogue's is a good choice.Listed in: Along the Garden Route

Review from Ben B.
Rogue's Roost is a good example of why you shouldn't judge a bar by its cover. From atop its perch on Spring Garden and Queen, it's really hard to tell anything about the place. You can't really see in the windows, it's tricky to figure out where the entrance is, and it's not very close to the 'bar district' you'll find on Argyle Street or even the Waterfront. But still...this micro pub is definitely worth a visit.
Once you're in the door, Rogue's combines the warmth of an old-school harbour town pub with the industrial features of a microbrewery, slotting in a handful of chairs and high tables along tall, bright windows overlooking the street. It's dark, but not dingy. A private alcove sits up a flight of stairs that you have to be awfully lucky to get considering the lurker-based system of landing a table.
The real surprise here comes out of the kitchen. The menu is well-rounded with pub favourites, vegetarian options, and seafood dishes so you're not just stuck ordering the same ole apps to get through your brew. My veggie wrap, for example, was filled with fresh ingredients, delicious tzatziki, and crisped in a panini press. Burgers, club sandwiches, and sweet potato fries filled the rest of the table with absolutely no complaints.
Servers shine here in comparison to other local pubs that can't quite seem to get it together. They're friendly, knowledgeable and seem to be having fun with what they're doing which goes a long way when you're enjoying some fresh raspberry wheat ales with great friends.Listed in: Spring Garden State, Pub Crawl, Veggie Burgers!

Rogue's Roost is a neat little pub/brewery overlooking Spring Garden Road, which makes it wonderful for people watching if you get a spot next to a window.
Despite the fact that I thought the food was just OK -- other than the nachos, which were fab (although I guess it's hard to screw up nachos)-- (I got the Greek burger, admittedly tzatziki might be too mild a dressing for red meat) and the India pale ale we ordered was not my cup of tea (the brewers were experimenting with the goods by not filtering them), I would go there again. The service was quite fast and the prices were affordable. We left just in time for trivia to start and being a fan of trivia and all I might like to check it out some other Wednesday.
I'd say check it out, but don't get the Greek burger--looks better on paper than it actually is. I'll give you another chance sometime soon, you nice looking pub! I'd love to love you. -

I visited Rogue's Roost for the first time last night, for their Wednesday Trivia night. The place was full, so my 3 companions and I ended up sitting at what I like to call the overflow table, closest to the front door. Service was incredibly slow, it took 35 minutes before we were approached by a server. When my friend commented on the long wait, our server seemed visibly agitated.
I tried the Nut Brown ale, which was delicious, you could really taste the chocolate undertones. For food I went with the chicken strips and fries. I found the chicken strips over done, and tasteless, but the beef eater style fries were great, well seasoned and crispy, which is often not the case with a wider style chip. Two of my friends had the cheeseburgers and both commented that they were really good and tasted like a burger should. The trivia was good, three rounds with interesting questions and the host kept the game flowing.
All in all, while I wouldn't call Rogue's my new favorite pub, I would for sure come back for another trivia night. -

I am a big fan of Rogue's. Their menu is pretty decent, the food is very reasonably priced and delicious! Service isn`t over the top great, but there are definitely worse places in town service wise. If you manage to score a window seat you have arguably one of the best people watching perches in all of downtown Halifax. The brew pub aspect is definitely a bonus but it`s nice that they still serve other beer so you`re not stuck if you're looking for something a little less adventurous.

Rogue's is one of my favourite pubs in Halifax. Great service. Familiar staff. Daily specials for less than $10. What more can you ask for?
Because I work so close to Rogues, it's often an easy choice for a quick lunch. But really the most appealing part is their daily lunch specials. Every day is something different. I usually choose the daily wrap special which can rotate amongst BBQ chicken, curry chicken, spicy chicken, etc. You get this wrap with a side of their seasoned beefeater fries for $8. They also have a soup of the day which can be a variety of veggie, tomato, cream of broccoli, or a host of others. And finally, they offer a grilled cheese or a third daily special.
And that's just the specials! Their menu has many other items from seafood to chicken fingers, burgers and vegetarian options.
Not hungry? That's cool. They make their own beer, being a microbrewery and all. Offering darker, lighter and the ever-famous red beer. Of course, they also allow outside beer such as Keith's or Coors, or other drinks like rum or vodka.
Also keep in mind they have weekly events such as their trivia night, which is quite fun and ALWAYS packed so be there by 8:30 or so. I think this night falls on a Thursday.
Rumour has it they have an upstairs patio on the roof that you can reserve. While I've never participated in such a delicious plan before, I do believe to reserve this space may be in the area of $20/hour. It's definitely something I've thought about before but for some reason have never gone far enough to take advantage.
Bonus points for the fun staff and the seats by the window allowing you to overlook Spring Garden Road. Rogue's provides a great Saturday afternoon place to have lunch if you can choose a prime seat and hang out for an hour or so. -
Review from Sue A.
I recently stopped by the Rogue's Roost for a late night drink with friends. Perched above Spring Garden Road, this bar certainly is roost-like, but the word that comes to mind when I think of this casual, high-ceilinged, dimly-lit space is manly. To me, it has a guys' clubhouse atmosphere. In fact the evening I was there, the crowd was mostly guys. (I'm sure none of them were rogues!)
But ladies, don't let the manly vibe scare you off. The food is A-1. The nachos, my default food measuring stick, were served piping hot with plentiful toppings. For lunch or a light evening snack, I recommend the California Wrap, a delicious combination of chicken, tomato, lettuce, mayo and guac in a toasted tortilla. The menu also has a wide array of dishes including pizzas, pastas, sandwiches and lots of tasty appetizers. Service is friendly, attentive, and fast.
However, the Rogue's Roost's raison d'être is its homemade ales. You can choose from one of the five standard ales on brewed site--red, brown, cream, IPA and raspberry wheat--or one of the occasional seasonal specialities. For non-ale drinkers, there is a pleasing cocktail menu.
In the spirit of conviviality, every night except Friday features a happy hour. Most nights have happy hour from 5 to 7pm except on Sundays when you can get happy all day long from 5pm to 2 am. Thursdays and Saturdays have power hour form 9 -10 pm when Rogues Ale is super cheap. Welcome news for microbrew lovers.
So while you might think you're in a man's hangout, you'll thoroughly enjoy the laidback atmosphere, tasty food and fine beverages. Plus if you get a window seat, the high perch is one of the city's best people watching locations. -

This is a true micro-brewery. Their beers are very fresh, and just oozing with flavour which tends to give me a perma-grin. If you're a beer enthusiast you'll be darned if you leave before trying every one!
This joint is very popular and is located in the heartbeat of downtown which means getting a table is very hit or miss, so go ahead and sit at the bar while waiting-- don't get discouraged!
However, the food that we ordered was less than satisfying and truth be told, kind of expedited our length of stay. I ordered the Chicken Souvlaki Wrap and my partner (a trained chef, none the less) ordered the Veggie Burger. The wrap was overfilled with a tasteless sauce, the chicken was cold and had a texture I can't really transfer into words. The veggie burger, I was told, tasted frozen and like it was out of a box. All and all, not the greatest meals we've had.
Lets end this on a positive note though. If you're looking for a spot for a casual drink, some conversation, and great energy this is the yin to your yang.Listed in: Pleased to Meat You., Date Nights!

Review from Lacey H.
I think Rogue's Roost is one of the most legitimate micro-breweries in Halifax. Their in house brews are top-notch and full of flavor. Whoever is working the tanks at this place knows what they're doing!
There was a time when I frequented trivia at Rogue's but so did everyone else in Halifax. It became virtually impossible to score a table unless you arrived super early in the evening. Thus, I haven't been visiting with as much regularity but that doesn't mean I'm not fond of the pub.
The service is touch and go, kind of a free for all where you're not certain who to ask for what, which can be a little irritating.
When I do visit though, I like to order raspberry ale and a basket of fries, a delightful combo that is bound to leave you sated. If you go during the day, the large windows are a bonus for people watching, and the little upstairs nook is pretty swell if you want to retreat from view. -
Review from Laura P.
A friend of my sister brought on a first time venture to Rogue's Roost. I've noticed it many 'a time during Spring Garden quests; however, never ventured beyond its discrete entrance.
There is an easygoing atmosphere here thats quite endearing. Folks of many ages can come together, choose from the wide array of brews, and have a laugh. On the night of my first encounter, it just so happened to be open mic night. Good times! There were some older gentlemen who were really rocking out and sounding great! Rogues seemed like just an easy place to be.
I went out of my usual and chipped in on a pitcher of raspberry ale, as recommended by my sister's pal, a common frequenter. It was enjoyable! This is a beer I could comfortably sip on.
I'd recommend this spot to beer lovers and those who enjoy the friendly, easygoing local pub. -

Rouge's Roost is one of those places that you can always pop into without worrying too much about things being overcrowded and crazy. That's not to say it doesn't get busy, or doesn't appeal to a lot of people. It's just a more relaxed atmosphere than a lot of the downtown pubs.
Rouge's has a great food menu with some of the best nachos you can find in town. I have yet to order a main here that I haven't enjoyed either. One of the selling points of Rouge's is that they brew all of their own beer in their own micro brewery right on site. The beer that Rouge's is probably best known for is their very own Raspberry Wheat Ale. Everyone I know (and a lot of people I don't) that has tried this love it. If you get a chance stop in have one for yourself.
Rouge's is not a huge pub but there isn't a bad seat in the house. You're either going to be close to the bar or next to the massive window that overlooks Spring Garden Road. There is an outdoor "patio" but in my opinion it seems a little too separated from the actual bar. Essentially it's just some tables and chairs on the sidewalk in front of the building. The only other complaint is the bathrooms. You have to exit the bar and head through what seems like a labyrinth to get to them.
Most of the late night entertainment here revolves around live music. Tuesdays are open mics, Thursday's are blues and Saturdays there's usually a live band. They also have a vinyl night on Sunday and trivia on Wednesday for a change of pace. -

Rogue's is my favorite brewpub in Halifax for oh so many reasons.
When I last lived in Halifax, they held a regular trivia night. It was packed. The owner, loving all the out-of-the-blue business, sent around shooters for everyone a couple of times. That only encouraged us more. You'd see people arriving here with their periodic tables ready for the game night.
The food here is also consistently good. The California wrap (minus the lettuce) is gooey and loaded with ripe avacado. The fries are thick-cut and perfect for dipping. Check out the "roost" area too -- a second floor loft that offers a cozy view of the bar.
And being a brewpub, I can't neglect offering a few words on the beer: how I long for a big pint of bulldog brown.
Rogue's is also conveniently located on Spring Garden Road for easy shopping refueling. -

Went to Rogue's Roost for the first time after yoga with a couple of friends, and was pretty impressed, a diverse menu, all very reasonable prices, and good bitter (don't know if it was produced there, it didn't show on their ales list, but regardless, it hit the spot).
Between us we had steak sandwiches and Dragon's Breath burgers, made with That Dutchman's infamously excellent blue cheese. Everyone seemed pretty satisfied - only thing I noticed was that my companion's sweet potato frites seemed to be overdone, but he offered no complaint about them.
Definitely worth another visit. -

I was told to try the raspberry wheat beer, but initially refused because the notion somehow seemed corrupt. After one sip, however, I changed my mind.
Coupled with a greasy platter of topping-laden nachos, this place offers the perfect hangover cure at a great location. Staff is friendly and efficient as well. -

Rogue's Roost has a couple things that they're good at, and that's what keeps me coming back to this pub. I recommend their nachos, although nothing superbly impressive they are tasty and nobody seems to have scrimped on the cheese. I hate reaching the bottom of a nacho pile to find stale tortillas and nothing else.
Rogue's Roost also carries my personal favorite: Propeller Raspberry Wheat. Can't really go wrong there.
My one gripe with Rogues Roost is that they seem to have a tip sharing system. This means that someone is loosely responsible for you but not necessarily. This creates needless confusion for staff who will either ignore you (because they assume you've been served) or pester you because they don't realize somebody just came and took your order. Overall though, 'Rogues' is a good spot to go enjoy a few pints of raspberry wheat just don't expect the most expedient service in the world. -

Two Words: California Wrap
These are the only two words I need to hear to get me in the door at Rogue's. For some reason this menu item is probably my favorite in all of Halifax. It's a great tasting wrap that I order just about every time I'm here.
This is not the only good thing about Rogue's. They carry their own brand of beer as well as propeller, which is great and very tasty.
Another real highlight for me is the window seating. I've seen a lot of ridiculous things out Rogue's windows, from parades to full scale riots . It can sometimes be worth it just to sit down with a beer and watch.
Definitely a restaurant that is worth your time! -

It's a blistering hot Wednesday night yet despite the heat- you'll find me and 40 to 50 other Haligonians at only one spot: Rogue's Roost Brew Pub for weekly trivia. This micro-brewery located in the heart of Halifax on Spring Garden Road is one of the best spots for trivia in Halifax and definitely has some of the finest beer on tap. The service can, however, get a bit slow when it does get super busy
On every other night of the week, the atmosphere at Rogues is pretty relaxed. It's a great place to go have yourself a couple of beer with your friends. There are lots of little rooms in Rogues for you to sit in too. The window seats out front offer an open and often loud atmosphere with great views onto Spring Garden while an intimate room out back provides a perfect atmosphere for dates and small groups to have conversation over dinner.

I'd heard mixed reviews about Rogue's Roost before I decided to check it out for myself. I've gone now on two separate occasions (once at night for open mic and drinks and once for lunch on a weekend) and both times I thought it was great.
It's not a big place, so during the day (especially on weekends) it can get filled up quickly. It's a great place to sit and look out at Spring Garden, so I would definitely recommend grabbing a window seat if you can. I can also vouch for the Greek burger, which filled me up for a good price.
There is usually live music on Thursday and Saturday nights, and it is a pretty chill spot if you are just looking to sit around and have a few beers. The ales on tap include my favorite; Rogue's Roost Raspberry Wheat Ale, which is one of the beers that is brewed on site.
Hot Hint: If you are planning a party you can call to reserve the "Quarter Deck" which holds 20-70 people for private functions and come with a private bartender. -

Rogue's Roost is first and foremost a brewpub, best known for the ales they brew on-site: Raspberry Wheat, Rogue's Red, Bulldog Brown, Stout, IPA. and Cream, with seasonal ales occasionally added to the mix.
My personal favourite is the Rogue's Red, but I'm a fan of "red" beers in general. I tried, and was confident I'd love, the Raspberry Wheat, but I found it too sweet for my taste, which was a little disappointing.
Service here is slow and spotty, and seems to favour the pretty girls and jocky guys, but maybe that's just me. Whatever the reason, I had to go the bar to get a refill after my beer glass sat empty for about twenty minutes.
The food is typical pub fare, served without flourish, and occasionally cold. Still, it's tough to get a table here, so obviously plenty of people like it. The great view of bustling Spring Garden Road might not hurt, and the warm, woody atmosphere may hold enough appeal to keep 'em coming back. But my guess is, it's the ale. Lots and lots of ale. -

I can definitely agree with Ayla H. about this place. I also find it pretty loud when I'm in here. Sometimes that's a good thing: if you're looking to party. But other times it's somewhat inconvenient: if you're trying to enjoy a date.
Noise aside, I still enjoy Rogue's Roost for a good beer. Since my boyfriend goes to school right across the street, we experience this place every so often and usually have a good time. We find that the beer is reasonably priced and we aren't spending too much... even when we're partying for a while.
I do, however, find the service to be lacking every now and then. Sometimes you get a really good waitress who is super friendly and upbeat, but other times... not-so-much. A couple of times we've gone the server seems upset or just plain ignorant to us.
Even with the poor service every now and then we still manage to have a good time here. It's a fine establishment with much to offer for the beer lover. -

Good food, friendly staff, great location!
Rogue's Roost is another spot in Halifax that seems to have figured out the recipe to having a good restaurant. The food is fairly priced and very good quality. The restaurant overlooks one of the busiest streets in Halifax, Spring Garden. The staff are very pleasant and work hard to get you your order on the double. I have heard rumors as well that the staff do not leave Rogue's Roost very often for other work. Most restaurants in the city can have a high turnaround rate but Rogue's Roost must be doing something right to keep the same staff with them for a number of years.
The food is what you would expect from a Pub. I love their cheeseburgers and can never finish them. Not bad for a meal that only costs around $10. They also have a great selection of beer. So much so that I can always try something new and have never exhausted their menu choices of alcohol.
I didn't give them five stars because, although they definitely know how to please the customer, their food selection and service is what I expect from many restaurants downtown. So they aren't the restaurant that goes above and beyond the call of duty. But they are a solid choice in a city filled with restaurant options. -

Perhaps it's not always like this, but when I was last in Rogue's Roost it was uncomfortably loud. That night there was a live band playing and it was nearly impossible to speak to anyone around me.
I did enjoy the beers I had there, and my deliciously salty fries, but unfortunately the noise level dominated the experience. I'll be back again - I really want to check out Tuesday trivia night.
