I recently decided to enter the twenty-first century of telecommunications by scrapping my rather embarrassing and dated Samsung flip phone for a smart phone. This replacement was forced by the accidental "leaving" of my old phone in a rental car in San Diego.

This old phone was on a "value" plan that also included another embarrassing flip phone so we were really in the market for two phones. We swung by Aliant, provider of these lovely devices, only to discover there was no sample iPhone because the store renovations meant the premises were not up to Apple's standards. Kinda hard to buy something you can't see.

So we went to Rogers where we met the cheeriest phone geeks ever. (And phone geek is not an insult. These guys live and breathe phones and were probably born texting. If all sales people were so passionate, the retail world would be a better place.) No, I couldn't look at an iPhone here because the display device had been stolen. But the young phone geek happily pulled out his personal phone so I could compare with the Androids.

Suddenly I was in the phone version of the Mac vs. PC tv commercial. Where this young fellow knew Apple inside out, his coworker was able to provide the same exhaustive information about the Android phone. The two of them knew every feature of each phone plus which plan and features would serve us best with our two phone package, making what could be a painful experience painless.

Because we get two services from Eastlink, we get a 15% discount on our monthly bill, making this deal even with the Android phone less expensive than the value plan we had been on.

Yes, it took about two hours from start to finish. We had to have the numbers ported over to the Rogers network and then go through the paperwork but I have a phone I love and got great service. Plus, I have the feeling I could pop by for advice at any time.

If you need a phone, these guys rock!

I have mixed emotions about being a Rogers customer. I have been with Rogers for about 2 years now. I switched from Aliant because I could not seem to go on a plan that met my needs. My Aliant bill was never consistent and it was far more expensive than I wanted. I switched to Rogers (ported my phone number) and also got a second phone on my plan. I immediately found a plan that met my lifestyle and that would save me a ton of money. So...the best part of Rogers is that my bill remains the same every single month and it's always within my budget.

The part of Rogers that I'm not happy with is their customer service. This seems to be a common issue that Rogers customer have. Everytime I call there (which seems to be more that I would like), I get a rep that doesn't seem to have a clue about how to read or explain their bill. I find it very confused and very fursurating! They need some further training and they need to learn some soft skills.

This isn't so much a review of Rogers as it is one specific customer service rep, at this particular location.

Last year, I called Rogers to inform them that I wanted to be put on the cheapest cell plan possible for a two month period. (While I was out of the country) It costs A LOT of coin to cancel a cell phone plan with Rogers so this seemed like the most economical choice. I specified to them that I wanted my original plan to go back into place: May 1st.

Months later, I started to notice that my cell phone bill was creeping pretty outrageously high. I assumed this was a product of the fact that I was using my Halifax cellphone in Vancouver, and was thus being charged roaming fees on top of long distance, etc etc.

In September my bill had gotten so totally out of hand that I called Rogers to request a list of calls and cost/call. After being jerked around for about two weeks I finally received the breakdown and was shocked to see that my original plan had never gone back into effect!

Several panicked visits to Rogers ensued (my bill was up to $700+) and I was essentially told that I would have to pay the balance since there was no record of my having requested for the original plan to be reinstated. On my third visit in, I finally met Jenna. She was an absolute saving grace!! She called the internal branch of customer service and found out that they DID in fact have my request on file and that it had been THEIR error in not switching my plan back. She then put me onto Rogers 'retentions' department. NEVER SPEAK TO ANYONE AT ROGERS WHO DOESN'T WORK IN THIS DEPARTMENT. They are the only people with any real power, i'm convinced. Since my contract at Rogers was almost up, I apparently had quite a lot of clout in this situation. Cell phone companies will do anything not to lose a client, since their bread and butter consists of signing you up on long contracts and then bleeding you dry on a monthly basis.

With Jenna's assistance I was not only able to get my bill taken care of but was also issued a series of 'one time credits', which basically resulted in my not having to pay my cell bill for several months.

In a nut shell: Go speak to Jenna at the Spring Garden location of Rogers. She'll hook you up!

One more thing to note: For some inexplicable reason, this Rogers location can't look up your account number. You won't be able to pay your bill without your account # so be sure to look it up/take your bill with you next time you want to pay in person.
