We originally planned on going to crepevine up the street but the line was ridiculously long. We ended up in here and I gotta say I am pretty happy we did. We ended up waiting a little bit but we also had a party of 7. They were nice and did their best to accommodate our group - which worked out really well. I had their special which was ricotta pancakes with a citrus zest sauce some eggs and sausage.

I have never had ricotta pancakes before but I am officially in love. They are served up a bit thin but so moist and delish. The sauce they served up with it was tangy and a really nice change of pace. I can't even lie the pork sausages were hella good too. Usually they are a little dry or crispy but these tasted super juicy! loved it!

They kept my coffee cup full the entire morning and served up the food pretty quick! Thumbs up!

I dearly miss living a block away from Rockridge Cafe. The ricotta pancakes, challah french toast, breakfast burritos, BLT, huevos rancheros, and corned beef hash are all fantastic.

Where brunch in San Francisco can be a big fancy production where you're half expected to be drunk by 2PM and children are at best unwelcome, brunch in Rockridge is a refreshingly wholesome family affair. Everyone is sweet, the line moves quickly on a busy Saturday and the coffee is refreshingly...dineriffic? Seriously, it's not good coffee. But it works.

A good cafe. I've been there only one time. I ordered an Anchor beer, half sandwich (chipotle blt), and cup of soup (tomato lentil). The sandwich and soup were very tasty. The bill came to $13 before tip. I would definitely go back.

As for the layout, it's a little cramped inside, especially if they are busy. I do like how open their kitchen is. You can look right in, depending on where you're sitting, and see the chefs work their magic.

This place is always busy, and they don't have a good system for seating tables, but it's worth the wait. The portions are generous but not overwhelming, and they have more than the standard breakfast faire, like pumpkin waffles. Service is pretty snappy and friendly (once you get seated). Just a couple of blocks south of bart, so good meetup spot.

After dropping my car at Stauder Automotive, I stopped by the Rickridge Cafe, suggested by Jim Stauder, and had a stout breakfast which was a California Omelet with green onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, avocado & jack cheese and sourdough toast washed down with a nice glass of freshly squeezed orange juice since they did not have my favorite type of 'refreshment' stand with something with a bit more of authority

I went here on presidents day.   It was a full house, but I only waited for about 10 minutes.  Very friendly staff and promt service.  I had the french toast combo, inluding one egg, and two sausage links.  Everything was pretty standard.  Can't complain, but can't say I was too impressed.

My girlfriend had a two egg spinich, bacon and goat cheese omelete, which at first looked to contain much more than two eggs, but in actuality it was only because it was stuffed full of spinich... like enough spinich for a side salad...sorta overwhelming.   I would give this cafe 3.5 stars because the service was great and the food was A-ok.   Seems to be a pretty popular spot for the locals.  If I was in the area I might hit it up again!  Cheers!

Very disappointing.  The food was very bland.  I had the "homemade hash" which looked and tasted like canned with onion and peppers added.  Ordered two courses and both came at once with the explanation that when it's slow the kitchen is fast.

This place has yet to fail me.  It's a lot of food for a decent price.  It's relatively nice inside, and has a good feeling to it.  I like coming here with out of towners or just to have a brunch date.  Who knew potatoes mixed INTO your eggs could be so damn good-even better if you get it with salsa. Sometimes there's a wait, as with most of the breakfast places (doesn't take too long in my experience though). Also, there's free street parking which is always exciting.

My only complaint is one time we were there around closing time and as we were eating (along with another table or two in there) they started cleaning and putting chairs up on the table.  Trust me, I understand wanting to get home and get people out of the place, but that was a bit much.  We ended up rushing and eventually packing it to go instead of enjoying our time.

Beware! If you are a "just a coffee" customer, the smile on the waitress (Tuesday morning) will disappear! You will then get one word responses, with a flat face, no thank yous, no accommodation at all. Oh, and wifi posted outside but did NOT work.

    Our order consisted of:
    1. Build my own egg white omelet with avocado, green onions, spinach, and basil- side of wheat toast.

    2. Side of Cottage cheese with cantaloupe.

The omelet wasn't anything extraordinary, but it was pretty good for takeout breakfast.  The cantaloupe was very fresh and ripe so that was definitely major points because I wasn't so sure about that.

I would go back, but I would probably order the pancakes or french toast dishes instead of the egg dishes. I have been there before and had ordered a salmon dish and had the same issue. However, I may just be an egg snob and I feel like I could just make it better at home.

I have been coming here since I was a child. It's pretty popular and is always crowded with some sort of line when I come here. The food (especially the breakfasts) are good and reasonably priced. They were also open on New Years Day, which is a plus.

The coffee and mochas are good, although last time I went, it took them a while to bring me my mocha.

If you come here, expect to wait. There is some space inside to wait for a table, but you may need to wait outside. This place is good for kids. There is a kids' menu and they can enjoy a hot chocolate.

Came here on New Years Day for a hangover breakfast - +1 for being open on Jan 1st.

Lively ambiance but they could do with more chairs in the restaurant. We had 5 people in our group and I felt that  we could have been seated faster at 4 person table with an extra chair rather than wait for a larger table. Waited about 15 minutes.

Had the Avocado BLT with side chowder soup.
Large 3 slices of bacon with the BLT with generous amount of avocado spread. Served on Rye. Definitely one of the better BLTs I've had. Soup on the other hand was forgetful.

Nice coffee selection and would've definitely liked to try the ricotta pancakes.

Overall, nice, homey, place to stop for lunch or dinner if you can't decide on anything (as they probably have something for everyone.

Consensus: OK but definitely wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

Zero flavour. Very disappointing breakfast. The server recommended the migas scrambled eggs with onion, tomato and Serrano chilies. It had no taste and if there were chilies I couldn't taste them. I told the server the food had no flavour whatsoever. It would have been nice to hear an apology or to be offered a discount. The server did not have time to check in so at the minimum it would have been nice to receive some friendly customer service vs feeling brushed off. She basically just said, oh and walked away. My friends ordered the chicken sandwich and they were happy with it.

This was quite reasonably the worst breakfast I've ever eaten. I was in the area this morning for an appointment, and this was close. I ordered the tofu scramble, homefries, and an orange juice to go.

The tofu scramble was watery and not very well cooked and the homefries were stale, dry and greasy at the same time; neither were seasoned. The best thing about the breakfast was the orange juice and I saw that come out of a jug.

    Disgusting.

This is the place I usually go to for breakfast in Oakland when I need a break from the Piedmont Cafe. Nothing fancy, but a good solid breakfast. I give it three stars because I usually have to wait to get seated, and the price can be a slight bit high for what you get. For weekday breakfast it's definitely a good place. However, I'm still looking for that great weekend brunch place in Oakland!

Stopped in for brunch and ordered the Rockridge Style Corned Beef Hash with Poached Eggs. The g/f ordered the Salmon Omelette from their Specials list.

The hash has pretty finely chopped meat and potatoes like a canned hash (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) It was pretty good though the chilis (Rockridge Style?) didn't add much flavor. The poached eggs were overcooked with solid, soft, but non-runny yolks.

The omelette was more frittata-like with everything mixed into the eggs and cooked in the pan with no folding of fillings into the egg (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). The salmon had an off-flavor that neither of us enjoyed. She didn't finish this and stuck with the large muffin she got instead of toast.

    Hash: 3.5 stars
    Poached eggs: 2 stars

This place was bustling on a Saturday afternoon. We sat at the bar and was able to watch them cook, which was nice. We spotted our french toast sitting out for a while, just waiting for its partner the corned beef hash which was getting pounded out by the chef.

Challah French Toast: I wanted to get the Croissant French Toast which I heard good things about, but they were out of croissants. Maybe next time! The Challah French Toast had a lot of custard that was clearly visible and consists of 6 generous slices. It is a little bland with just butter; maple syrup is a must.

Corned Beef Hash: You know how they joke about poached eggs turning into hard boiled eggs? Both of the yolks were hard-boiled essentially while being a little gooey in the center, but definitely not enough to ooze out when you cut into them. The hash was fairly light with thinly diced potatoes. It came with your choice of side: Scone, Toast, or Muffin. I opted for Coffee Cake for an additional $1.25 because it was enticing me from the pan that was placed strategically in front of me. It was alright, but the scone looked pretty good.

It took us forever to flag down the waitress to get our orders and to get our food, but I really loved the ambience of the place. It was like an old-school cafe that you would find in a small town with a bit of a diner vibe. With decent prices, too.

I really want to like Rockridge cafe, I really do. The kids artwork framed in the front is so cute, the staff are super nice and attentive. The menu is unique, I mean how many places can say they serve challa french toast?
But, I can't help but feel like the two times I've been here, my meal has been, well, a little bland for my tastes.

If your tastes are more on the classic, milder side, I feel you will definitely find a home at Rockridge Cafe, it's just not my cup o' tea.

Don't tell my Grandma, but I love Rockridge Cafe's coffee cake. It's almost as good as hers. When my husband and I stopped here for breakfast one Saturday morning, we both ordered the Rockridge breakfast, which came with it. Delicious stuff. The whole meal was amazing, and was more than enough food -- generous portions you see in places like Texas.

We sat at the bar because there weren't any other seats in the place, but we really enjoyed it, because it was fun watching the cook work his magic. He was really awesome. We also had great service at the counter. Everyone seemed to take care of us. The only problem was no one, not even our waitress, seemed to know I was drinking decaf so people kept coming by and pouring regular in my cup. The coffee was otherwise decent. I didn't complain too much because I'd had enough at that point, but I think that problem needs to be addressed. Get some little paper coasters or different mugs for decaf drinkers, ya know? That would be cool.

I wish this place had outdoor seating. It would be awesome on a pretty day. The inside was crowded and didn't seem to have enough, but other than that, I liked it here. It was a little more money than Hubcaps in Downtown Walnut Creek but it was nice to try something knew!

The Verdict: Good breakfast, great coffee cake.

Saturday Morning, Labor Day Weekend.  Not too busy.

Sat at counter and could watch them cook.  A little disturbing since my friend used to work in a kitchen and was telling me how I could tell if it was dirty.

I had Ricotta Pancakes.  So light and yummy.  I loved them.  I had been thinking about them a few weeks since I had walked by and seen the menu before.

Friend had eggs, bacon, GIANT coffee cake (super yummy) with homefries.  Eggs were perfect over medium (which is more rare than you'd think), bacon was thick and perfect and yummy, and the coffee cake was amazing!

    Staff was nice and attentive.

Big menu, food is fresh.  reasonable prices.

    Will go back.

I have consumed a variety of breakfast dishes here and highly recommend the chorizo migas, the smoked salmon and eggs benedict  on challah toast with avocado and the eggs florentine (though I do wish I could have spinach AND ham at no extra charge).  All dishes are extremely tasty and not super greasy like some other breakfast joints.

As some of the other reviews have pointed out, the service here isn't the best.  It just doesn't have the warmness that you'd expect from a neighborhood cafe.  It is often hard to get the attention of servers even when it's relatively empty.  It is also not the cheapest place, but it's worth a visit to try the migas for sure.

The Rockridge Cafe, or "the Rock", is solid. I used to come here for the breakfast but in recent visits, I enjoy their lunch more. I really like their Turkey Club sandwich. Nothing fancy, just sliced turkey, tomatoes, lettuce, bacon, and mayo. You can have their spicy mayo for an extra kick. It's like having a BLT on top of a turkey sandwich, what a great architectural combo. All you need now is a good cup of coffee, which the servers are readily to help you with.

Additionally I recommend the Ricotta pancakes that everyone raves about. It's the tangy orange sauce that steals the show. It's almost like dessert, how guilty it is.

One of my favorite weekend brunch spots that consistently delivers on delicious food and service. I've always ordered the Ric special (eggs, bacon or sausage, and ricotta pancakes). Their ricotta pancakes are to die for! I admit that I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to trying different items on their menu, but that's because I want to stick to what's good rather than venture out into the unknown. SmoothC has been more adventurous and has ordered the corned beef hash, several omelette varietals, and the migas.  All items were simply stellar. The last time I went I did opt for the chicken salad which was amazing! Capers, cashews, apples and plenty of chicken atop a bed of greens and veggies, I now have a new favorite here.
Whether we're seated at the counter or at a table, the service we've had has been top notch. With clean bathrooms, short wait times, and great service, and rockin' coffee and juice, Rockridge Cafe is an awesome no frills eatery.

The food here is 4 stars, very good! but the recent not so great service brings it down to 3.5 ;o/ .

I've been coming here since I was a kid, but haven't been here in a few years. I love supporting local businesses, especially ones in rockridge. I wanted it to be my favorite breakfast place so badly! My return was not perfect, but not horrible.

I remember the challah french toast and sweet items being very delicious back in the day.  I decided to get the tofu Florentine, which is tofu, tomatoes, and spinach (and hold the cheese!). Props to them for having a vegetarian/eggless savory meal on their menu. The Florentine was very tasty! I'd definitely order it again. However, it was supposed to come with toast since and it didn't :( . I was surprised that the cooks missed this, and that the waitress didn't notice it either. We also ordered a side of fruit. That never came either, and we were still charged for it. To her credit, it was busy, but two items missing is no good.

I don't want to discredit them based on bad service on a busy Sunday morning, since the waitresses are really friendly and were apologetic. I will have to come back again and re-evaluate before deciding that my recent somewhat negative experience should steer me away.

Try coming when it's not so busy, and I bet you will receive both tasty food and good service.

The Ricotta Pancakes are superb - super moist and so light they produced a melt-in-your-mouth sensation never before detected in a pancake.

I've come here on two different occasions and have both times found the food to be bland, whether it be an omelette, hash browns, or waffle.  I think a person's best bet would be to order something that is loaded with fat and so bound to have at least some flavor, such as a hash or sausages.

However, I appreciate the old skool diner charm of the place, characterized by servers coming 'round frequently to fill your cup with fresh coffee.

Two-star review number three.  I'll keep it short.

Walking to the BART station, tummy barking like a beaver.

Rockridge Cafe.  Breakfast food.  Chorizo Breakfast Burrito to go in foil and paper bag.  Friendly older dude working the register.  "Top o the morning to ya, Tilly."

Four minutes and ten doll-hairs later, I'm on my way to work, anticipating the 6000 calories I can't wait to consume.

Short BART ride from Rockridge to Nut Creek.  Eight block walk.  Three flights up.  Down the hallway.  Paperbag was soaked in orange chorizo oil.  Furthermore, the whole thing fell apart into a mush of refried beans, soggy oily burrito wrapper, congealed scrambie eggs, and a shitload of crumbly and untasty chorizo.

So I ate the ketchup and mustard packets it came with instead.

    What am I, chopped liver?

Ricotta pancakes.  They came recommended, so I ate 'em, and they was tasty.  Very light, but incredibly flavorful.  I was assured that everything on the Rock Ridge menu was great though, be it breakfast, or lunch.  Next time I'm in Oakland, I'll stop by for some grub.

I wish I could give 4.5 because I'm not into giving a full 5 stars, but this place definitely deserves more than 4 stars.  Here's why:

    - Incredibly friendly staff
    - Very quick service
    - One of the best pancakes I've ever eaten
    - Generous portions
    - The price is right
    - True American dining experience (great vibe)

The wait staff were super attentive but not annoyingly so. The place was full but our food came out quickly. The Rockridge special was a-ma-zing. So were the ricotta pancakes. We didn't believe we'd like them but we had to try and I'm so glad we did.

    Try it!

Oh, Rockridge Cafe, how I love thee!
    Let me count the ways...

Warm, friendly smiles and coffee refills from the wait staff no matter how busy it gets...

Ricotta pancakes with citrus zest. Sorry maple syrup, I've found a better topping!

Spinach, goat cheese and bacon omelette...what decadent way to start the day.

Sizzling hot bacon strips...mmmm...SO MUCH BETTER than the luke warm, reheated bacon at another restaurant whose name rhymes with Shmenus.

Challah French toast, with your cinnamonny splendor, we will never rename you Freedom Toast.

My suggestion: take a seat at the counter and watch this team sling breakfasts like a finely oiled machine. Watch the servers dance past each other carrying two arms full of plates. It's amazing. If everyone were this efficient at their work, we'd be able to solve the world's problems in a week.

See you next weekend for some R&R and the RR Cafe...

I got chased out of here today. OK, not literally, but the server made me feel so unwelcome that I walked out leaving my coffee untouched. I had come in at about 2:40pm and unbeknown to me, they close at 3:00. An older woman (all smiles) gestured and said "Sure!" to my question "Counter OK?". A young, heavily inked server then slapped down a menu and asked if I wanted anything to drink. "Coffee, please" I responded. She was back in less than two minutes with my coffee and "Do you know what you want?" - "I'm sorry, I haven't even looked at the menu yet." "Well decide quick, 'cause we're closing soon!"  Really?

Let me make that easier for you: one less customer.

My favorite thing on their menu is the French Toast. Yum! My waitress was very kind (black hair) and had great suggestions for our kids who are picky eaters. This place is very popular so be prepared to wait for a bit...

My boyfriend and I live in Rockridge, and frequent the Rockridge Cafe 1-2 times per weekend on average. I guess you could say we're regulars :-) Just a quick walk to great diner coffee and chicken apple sausage, mmmmmmmmm. There's normally a bit of a wait, but you can always just grab a mug and pour yourself some coffee while you wait. The servers are always super nice, and graciously deal with the line of people that inevitably forms right where they need to walk by with plates.

Food is yummy -- they always have new brunch specials, but be sure to get in there early because they normally run out of these delicious concoctions by the afternoon. Bring back the chipotle benedict!! Especially the corn beef hash... I haven't had it yet, but they're normally out of it by the time I get there, so I assume it must be amazing. Me, I stick to my eggs, english muffin, fruit and chicken apple sausage -- and this may seem like a small thing, but the fruit is always really good. Some diners normally have that acidic-been-sitting-in-the-fridge-for-days kind of taste, but it's always fresh here!

The coffee cake and challah french toast are also quite amazing -- definitely recommend this spot!

When visiting family and friends in Oakland, I always stop by for breakfast or lunch. Yes, it has gotten pricey but the quality is fantastic. Best buttermilk pancakes, great burgers for lunch. Wish there was one in New York!

A nice place for a tasty brunch. My scrambled eggs with smoked salmon was great- with lots of salmon.  The ricotta pancakes were extremely fluffy.

The coffee was strong in a good way. Service was alright, and the prices are reasonable. There can be a long wait.

Rockridge cafe has that old school diner feel to it that everybody needs every now and then.

My brother and I came Saturday morning around 11:30am for brunch with the kids. My 3 year old niece is insistent that she should be carried at all times. Look, I would totally understand if she were a helpless paraplegic, but she's got a pair of two perfectly good, usable legs on her! :/ But those pleading, puppy dog eyes when she asks her auntie to carry her... awwww dang it. So after carrying her around for a good hour before arriving, AND the 15 minutes that we waited eagerly for a table, I had worked up a major appetite and some lactic acid build up in my arms.

I ordered the breakfast sandwich because the combination of a fried egg, bacon and cheese smashed together in a sliced croissant sounded devilishly good. But I hesitated. Would that be enough food for me? We were off to the Berkeley hills after this, where food would be scarce. What if I eat my sandwich and I'm not full? *anxiety and indecision setting in now* Then my logical bro told me he would order an extra side order and we could split it if I wanted. Phew!! That works.

So out comes my sandwich and it actually spans the entire length of the plate and then some. It was hanging about 1 inch off on either side! This was twice the size of the one in the picture! Score!  The sandwich was good and was more than enough to fill me up.  I had trouble splitting the extra side with my brother, much to his dismay, haha.  Ricotta pancakes and blueberry pancakes were also tasty here.  Would come back again if I happened to be in the area.

One thing, RICOTTA Frucking PANCAKES!!!!!  They down side is you only get two per plate.  I could eat ten of these suckas.

The eggs bene's are decent too. Did I mention the pancakes thoooo?

The food used to be good, the service used to be nice, but not anymore. The place has taken a terrible turn for the worse. The omelette was floating in a pool of watery muck. The eggs tasted like they came out of a Egg-Beaters carton. The large spinach salad was the size of dessert bowl. Everything was crappy and the staff couldn't have cared less. Resting on their laurels won't last long when there are so many other choices nearby. Mama Royal, Aunt Mary's, the mixing bowl, Crepevine (the list goes on and on) are all better choices. It is a shame how bad it has gotten and the management and staff are oblivious to the decline.

Challah french toast for the win! Comes with bacon/sausage and an egg, filled me up just perfectly.

Coffee was tasty, I was a little nervous because their espresso hopper looked like it hadn't been cleaned in... ever. :X

Prices were average. Wait was reasonable for a Sunday. Left with a satisfied, lazy-afternoon feeling. Will return!
