Satisfying food & a tempting happy hour. $7 carafe of nigori sake.
Tuesday is $20 all you can eat sushi. While I've had good sushi here, I haven't found that this paid off due to the limited options for the deal.
Thursday is free karaoke.
It's a large space so I've never had to wait for a table. I wish this place did brunch, but unfortunately that's not the case. -

Came here on a whim since it seemed most attractive of all the choices nearby. And believe me, we really wanted to like it. We were even planning out what we wanted the next time we were here. However, the food was mediocre, the service was mediocre, the sake was weak albeit tasty. Four things that surprised me the most:
1. We ordered a half dozen oysters, we were served five with a mini-oyster making up the sixth (small even for kumamoto oysters). If I'm paying $17 for a half dozen oysters, I'm expecting full-sized oysters and not something the size of a thumbnail. The natural flavor of the oyster did not come through the strong dressings it came with.
2.-3. I ordered a second round of sake with the "American Kobe" filet mignon sliders and bin toro sashimi. (2) The butchered sashimi came after quite a wait. The pieces were thin and fell apart when you tried to pick it up with chopsticks. It was impossible to eat without it breaking apart. It was slaughtered and butchered, not carefully sliced like sashimi should be. (3) After we were done with the sashimi we still had to wait for the sake to come. It's warmed sake, I shouldn't be able to eat an entire order and still left waiting. To the point where we joked with that waitress that it was a ploy to get us to stay longer and order more.
4. First off, there is no such thing as "American Kobe", what is available in America is kobe-style beef as authentic kobe is not available outside of Japan. The quality of kobe-style does not compare. However, the name "kobe" does sell more plates because it eludes to quality. Anyways, I've digressed. The slabs of meat between tiny buns came out RAW. Not rare as filet mignon is traditionally cooked but slightly burnt on the outside and still moo-ing on the inside. As a meat-lover who orders rare and even eats beef carpaccio I have no problem with moo-ing if it's meant to be prepared in that manner. Raw meat not cooked in acid is
Worst part was the bill for two came out to $70-something ($90 after tip) and we were both still hungry. Headed down to the Bottom of the Hill for a $7 grilled cheese that was infinitely more satisfying and filling. Eating here is doing your stomach and wallet an injustice but a try test of patience. If you're looking for pretentious Asian Fusion with slow service, this is the place to go. If you're looking for satisfying, quality sushi/rolls do yourself a favor and go elsewhere (Blowfish = comparable ambiance/style; Live = quality). -

The food was good, but waited quite some time for the food to arrive. When the food did finally arrive it all came at the same time and basically we had little room on the table.
Service was decent, the manager was friendly (even ran out in the pouring rain to hand a family their stroller), but the other waitstaff seemed tired and moody.
Went one Thursday night and it just so happened to be karaoke night. Terrible singers that night, but once the food came their terrible shrieks were bearable. -

Rocketfish is CHEAP. Not referring to their prices, although I do like their happy hour, but referring to their policies! We've had multiple negative experiences involving overcharging, hidden charges that they slipped in, and unexplained upcharges. The owners obviously don't know much about customer service and keeping customers happy.
Service is pretty terrible all around -- cranky, rude, unfriendly, and inattentive staff. Bummer, because this place has so much potential! We're heading to Moshi Moshi from now on. -
Review from Emily S.
We decided to stop here one night for dinner and we weren't disappointed that we did. We ordered 2 beers, the rainbow roll and the white wave walu. All I can say is that the food was amazing. The walu was beautifully presented and the fish was buttery and never fishy tasting. I never would have put capers on walu but it was outstanding.
They lose one star for forgetting about us for almost 20 minutes when we were ready to order. Other than that, we were very happy with our meal and will be back! -

Korean by day, Sushi by night. Talk about Asian fusion alright. So this isn't you traditional Asian restaurant, where all the staff are Asian. You get a mix, which is what SF is all about. Kudos to that. Walk in, and immediately, someone finds you a table. Happy Hour just ended, but customers were still lining up along the bar enjoy the last of their cocktails and sake flights. Yes, I said it. . . .flights!
Looking through their dinner menu, you get a mix of American, which are steak, sliders, roasted brussel sprouts on the menu, then keep reading and you get you sushi delight. Roll options are limited, but it still has a decent amount. I didn't complain. We order the Veggie Appetizer sampler. It had spinach salad in sesame dressing, roasted brussel sprouts and peppers, plus corn fritters. Think the fritters were over fried, but the idea was still cool to make them like biscottis.
Sushi, we had the dungeons and dragon, which was packed full of meat, so hell yes to that. And we had the roasted eggplant, which was a roll too, with tempura asparagus in the enter, so that was delicious too.
Overall I was very happy. More impressed was the service. They had two girls in training, but the two main guys kept their eyes on them. Constantly checked with us on how we were doing, describing each dish to us and even made time for small talk. When they rang up my bill, the trainee messed up on the bill, so the one guy, Andy, had to void it and correct it. It took a couple of minutes and he was super sorry. Sorry enough to offer me a shot of Jameson. Well la-di-da, he didn't have to do that. Totally cool of them to do that. Will certainly have to return to check out their Koren lunch next time then. -

Good drinks, great service and great food! Seriously some of the best spicy tuna I've ever had!!! Walk here or leave home early, parking sucks.
*Note: It's something else during the day. Korean food I believe. -

Get the sticky rice and spicy tuna roll.. excellent. I like the atmosphere and the manager, Nick. Great guy, good at his job. The location is awesome. They have really good specials throughout the week too. The only reason it's getting 3 stars is because I think they could improve the variety on the menu a bit and up the portion sizes a bit, with the prices they charge. I'm comparing it to other sushi places I've been to that give you more food for your money.

This is the second restaurant I've been to with horrible service. By horrible, I mean slow, to the point where I don't want to leave a tip.
I made a reservation on Open Table since they have a 30% off deal. Made the reservation for 8:30, got there at 8:20, was probably seated at 8:30 even when the restaurant only had two groups there. The servers were all hiding behind the curtains. They greeted us as if they didn't know about the reservation, since we may sit at any table. It took them another 5 minutes to get our waters. We told them we're ready to order when our waters came, but took them another 5 minutes to come back. When they were finally ready to take our order, there was this random female server who commented on every order we made. When we asked if they had aji, the female server was completely clueless and went back to ask what it was. In conclusion, wasting too much time on just getting our orders in. By the way, we only ordered three things, is it necessary to take another 5 minutes when we know what we want? Okay, given the fact that the servers want to communicate with the customers, I'll leave that as is.
So our food came after like 10-15 minutes, the store was not busy so I don't get why it takes so long for our food to come. The double rainbow looked gross, the fish was like sinking in, lacking color...not fresh. The other nigiri came, looking dry and lacking color. When we put it in our mouths, the sushi was warm..um, gross!?
We probably took 5 minutes to actually dine, and we were there sitting for 40 minutes. Sad, very sad indeed. But at least you have an idea of how loooooonnnnngg the servers took. -

I'm a local Potrero-Hillian, and I love
all the restaurant here, except Rocket Fish. The waitress was rude and mumbled "I'm the only server f*** here", she was totally fake and rude, and the Bartender needs to learn how to make a drink. Just horrible service!! Overall, I recommend spend ing your money at the better places in Potrero Hill :) -

Came here for a quick appetizer and drink the other evening and I thought it was great. To drink I had the Red Dragon (Gin, Strawberry Syrup, and Red Jalapeno) it was delicious, mixed well and nicely balanced. If we had stayed longer I probably would have had two! And we ordered the Calamari and white prawn appetizer - it was awesome, and a good sized portion. Even though we didn't stay for sushi I will be back to try it and start with my new go to starter and cocktail.
The service was wonderful too. We arrived right after they unlocked the door and was helped by both the bartender and server. And they were more than accommodating when we asked to move tables together for our party of 7. -

This location has been through quite a few transformations in the last several years.
I can't say i have been impressed by anything since the days of Lingba when they showed old surf videos.
They have a fun little special menu that is shown on the chalkboard every day. Fresh oysters, new rolls and stuff like that. You can either sit in the bar(which i prefer) or they have a regular sit down area.
I can't say it is the best fish. Umi right up the road takes the cake for that.
But if you are looking for a nice tasty sushi restaurant this is a great place.
A little steep on the pricing but if you don't like the menu you have 4 or 5 options just a few steps away! -

Used to frequent this place, but it's gotten worse. Not too crazy about most of the bartender's either. This sounds petty and might be a mistake but it's happened a couple times when I get change they seem to keep the cents, for example if a beer was 6.80, they give you 3 bucks back, not 3.20, I don't care about 20 cents but it's the principle. I thought I imagined It but it happened twice in a row.
Happy hour isn't bad, more the food than the drinks. All you could eat tuesday used to be good, but now it's just rolls. With this service, not sure how much longer will last. -
Review from Albert H.
One of those mixed experiences. I think it depends a great deal on expectations ... but.
When we arrived for a 6:15 reservation, they were not very busy, and service was quite attentive. Fastest sushi kitchen I've seen, in fact. Dishes arrived literally a minute or two after we had ordered them. As the restaurant filled, this deteriorated considerably, service slowed, as did the food.
There are two rooms - a bar/lounge in the front and a dining room off to the side. The bar can get very noisy ( folks come here to watch games on their TV - we shared the room with a football crowd ).
The happy hour menu is both extensive and relatively inexpensive. Though they say some places that the happy hour is weekday only, we were offered the menu on a Saturday night.
The food is decent. It's not really a sashimi/nigiri place, and though we did have a nice preparation on Anikmo ( monkfish liver ) sashimi, their somewhat limited fish selection means the main focus is going to be on creative rolls and other preparations.
We had their 7-piece nigiri sampler, which was okay but not a work of art. On the other hand, Tokyo Napolitano - a sort of grilled nigiri with spicy tuna on top - was both creative and delicious. Cooked food ranged from decent ( not a bad yakitori sampler ) to uninspired ( beef tongue - thinly sliced, nothing too special ) to just difficult to eat ( kobe sliders - not using ground meat means you have to eat it in one bite if you can ).
The experience we had was almost that of a sports bar service pretty decent modern sushi-like stuff. Which is not a bad thing if that's what you like. If you're looking for standard or even outstanding Japanese fare, this is not the place for you. -

The food here is great. There are a lot of issues with the service.
We ate here last night. Our server said he was the new manager. He talked us out of the all you can eat in favor of some other dishes.
That was the last we heard from him until I had to ask the hostess for our check. Our drinks were empty for half an hour. He did not bring us our full order. We only had 1 napkin. We had to ask to have the soy sauce filled and for wasabi. It was like camping, but with tasty food. We left hungry.
The only reason I'm giving this place 2 starts is because the food is still great. The bartender also made some nice drinks. I try this place out every couple of months to see if they've gotten their act together; so far no dice. -

Rocketfish is billed as japanese cuisine. since only the sushi chef here is japanese, rocket's japanese authenticity may be questioned. the fare here is closer to asian fusion and new american with a sushi bar, with an emphasis on rolls, thrown in.
rocky's decor is rustic, homey bar setting on the right side or traditional dining room at tables on the left side.

Mediocre food - much rather go to Moshi Moshi for better food for less. -

Avoid at all costs!!!!!!
What the hell is going on with this place?? The service was the worst I have had in a long time!! We waited 20 minutes for the bartender to even acknowledge us, the dump wasn't even busy. Then he takes one order, walks away, and didn't even ask my friends what they were drinking. The host over heard us and never once left her perch, she was as clueless as a goldfish in a bowl.
At this point we were done, we left to go have a nice meal across the street. -

My wife and I went because I had a craving for sushi, as I often do, and we wanted to try someplace new. We arrived at happy hour.
We had the seared tune starter, raw oysters, the veggie roll, a spicy yellowtail (hamachi) roll, tofu, the crab and corn fritter, and the pork belly small plate with bok choy. Everything was good, except the crab and corn fritter, which was just acceptable because it was bland and boring.
Service was fine. Atmosphere was neighborhood-y; some young people meeting, a family or two, a few older folks (40-plus, which includes my wife and me).
All in all, it was certainly a good deal during happy hour. I would go back if I were in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't drive there just to eat there. We went to Whole Foods Potrero Hill and dropped an outrageous sum right afterward; that was a good combination trip -- the moderately priced meal balancing the huge grocery bill. -

Returned for all you can eat Sushi Tuesday. Was greeted by the owner, who came by to make sure that our needs were met. The services has improved dramatically and the food was delish. You cannot beat the deal.
________
This place has the potential to be a great neighborhood hotspot. HOWEVER....
Tonight was a perfect example of how poor management and/or employee training can ruin your business. You have specials on the board, but employees don't know what they are? Cannot describe them? Hello??? You have a popular drink on the menu, but on a Saturday night you don't have the ingredients? WTF? You run out of a special, but don't take it off the Board? Is it really too much to ask?
Wouldn't be my first choice - I'm just sayin. -

Met up with some friends after work for dinner here, and we had a great time.
Sushi rolls not to be missed:
Mr. White
Rocketfish
Soft Shell Crabby
Their fish was super fresh and tasty - I especially enjoyed the maguro sashimi.
Also, don't miss the garlic edemame and pork belly sliders...delicious!
Service was fast and friendly.
Word of advice - if you're hoping to have a nice conversation with your dining guests, ask to be seated in the back - the main dining room gets really loud with the music and bar. -

I was going to write an update to my original review, but found that this is my first one! Which makes it even more perplexing that our service last week was so horrendous. Our server was so specifically hating on us, that I was fat-headedly convinced that I had written a bad review when they first opened when Will T and I went after a 49ers game and that our server recognized me (you know when you are a long in the tooth-Yelper when you think every server in town must recognize you and be treating you differently--ouch). I had another theory, too. I actually had to squint at the guy and see if we'd dated in the 90s and I'd thwarted him somehow and he was getting me (and my friends, by association) back by ignoring and snapping at us.
But I hadn't written a review and I'm 99.7% sure that I didn't screw the guy over in this or a past life, so why we had such surprisingly bad service, I cannot tell you. Maybe just a bad day, fair enough. In which case, the more important thing you want to know about is the food. Unfortunately, it was was incredibly mediocre/two stars. We had some happy hour specials, sashimi, vegetarian rolls, and sides. Nothing had to be sent back, it was just so disappointing to finally have sushi (I only get it twice a year now, maybe!) and have it just be edible. The happy hour specials were what you would expect for $4, so that was my fault--super syrupy sweet tempura prawns, yuck. The seaweed salad was probably the highlight at "good."
Last notes on service: there was confusion from the host when we arrived, despite our OpenTable reservation, then we were eventually told by someone else to just take a seat anywhere. It took a long time for our surly server to arrive, and when he did, not only did he not ever check on us, but he forgot to put the applicable happy hour prices on our bill. I made this reservation because it was close to a playhouse we were going to that night and to give it another chance after the disappointing experience when they first opened. We were major regulars at Lingba Lounge, it's predecessor, so I wanted to give it a fair shake, but I'm afraid I won't be back. I would like to end on a positive note for those of you who want to brave it anyway--the Tapis malbec at $7/glass during Happy Hour is a delicious deal. -

I wish, I wish, I wish I were a fish. Cause fish have a better life than people.. I'll let Don sing it: http://www.youtube.com...
What kind of fish would I want to be? A tile fish like Don Knotts and save the US from the Nazi's. Maybe a salmon, ending up between a bagel and cream cheese or on the shelf at Trader Joes for $7.99 for 8oz.
No, I'd want to be a Rocketfish, a surprisely good sushi spot in the nice neighborhood of Potrero Hill.
Before coming, I read a real mix of reviews on yelp regarding this eatery. So I came in not knowing what to expect. Here's what I ended up ordering:
Dungeons & Dragons Roll: this roll is Unagi, tempura shrimp, avocado, crab, and cucumber. I order this pretty much anytime I go for sushi. Their version was good.
Rocketfish Roll: this is of course their flagship roll. Tuna, crab, tempura, topped with albacore, spicy aioli, and Unagi glaze. This roll is like how I like my woman, hot and sweet all at the same time. A delicious combo of ingredients, the spicy aioli gave a nice bite to the roll followed by the sweet of the Unagi glaze. Really good.
Bacon wrapped filet: this was the star. What I will remember most about Rocketfish. Crisp bacon wrapped around a tender cut of beef cooked to a medium rare. Amazingly flavorful, tender, and moist. There was a bed of peeled and then roasted tomatoes surrounding the filet, the tomatoes had a sweet taste that went perfectly with the filet. I dont care if its authentic, it was incredible like Mr. Limpet. Best entree I've eaten in a while...
I wish, I wish, I wish I was at Rocketfish...eating a bacon wrapped filet. -

On my first day at my new company, I learned that we had weekly team dinners where we would try a new vendor in the city. On this night, we went to Rocketfish.
WOW! Where have I been all these years? For being such a sushi lover - this place is oh-em-gee BOMB! Okay okay, I'll stop freaking out and walk you through the dishes I can remember (we ordered a lot).
1. Garlic Edamame - wowza! These are so delicious and filled with flavor - you just can't have enough! It's served in a little cup topped with crispy onion strips. Delish!
2. Dungeons and Dragons - this roll was amazing. Tempura perfection!
3. DOUBLE RAINBOW ALL THE WAY - Just do it!
4. The Rocket Fish - this is the roll they're known for. The surprising amount of crisps and flavor makes this roll another winner
5. Soft Shell Crabby - This was probably the best spider roll I've ever had
6. Green Spartan - wow wow wow! It looked so normal and basic but once it's in your mouth - the tempura crunches and perfect amounts of sauce and avocado sends this into my list of must-gets
7. Kawashima Mama - It's mini little churros with a chocolate dipping sauce... need I say more?
Those were the star dishes that I had last Monday. Go here now and fill your tummy with the above!!! You won't regret it, I promise. -

Came here with thanks to Scoutmob's deal!
Cute spot in a lovely area and right at the corner of the block - easy to find!
There's two sections of this place: one that's more bar and lounge-like and the other side, more of a restaurant set up.
Sat on the restaurant side where the sushi chefs are, where you can see them make the sushi and they're pretty young, amazingly dressed Japanese(i think) guys!
Sushi was A-OK status.a I'd recommend the Double Rainbow and the Rocketfish!
Sushi size is small-average so you'll definitely have to get a couple of rolls.
Their calamari is pretty good - one of the bigger portioned appetizer.
+ Didn't realize they had more on the wall than just on the menu so I didn't get to try the other Tapas but they sounded delicious! Will have to come and try that again.
++ REALLY GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! Much thanks to the waitress because it was a cold night when we stopped by so we were hoping we'd get warmer indoors. NOPE, we're still shivering haha and though this is a Japanese spot, it is Americanized so we were unsure if tea was free. We asked if there was charge for tea and there was, so we said nevermind.. and SUPRISINGLY, I guess the waitress felt bad for us and brought us tea anyways! She was so sweet! -

I have visited Rocketfish five or six times in the last three months, and two features are consistent: the fish is hit and miss (with Happy Hour providing the best values), and the service is either great or terrible.
I recently visited during happy hour and from 6pm to 7pm, the place was absolutely empty. People must be catching on. The red-haired bartender must be the owner, because he pours the stingiest shots I've seen anywhere. I was trying to get drinks for my table because the wait staff was nowhere to be found, and this bartender was the absolutely most impatient and unfriendly server I have met in SF.
I've read some reviews of Rocketfish that specifically praise the friendly and generous red-haired bartender, so perhaps I've just caught him on a few bad days... still, there are way too many great spots in Portrero Hill to waste any more time or money at Rocketfish. -

Oh how I love the majestic dinners I've enjoyed at Rocketfish! Especially the pork belly in salty yummy broth. Pure decadence.
Go on Thursday nights for Kenichi's FREE KJ Paul roll, a special feature for the Rocketfish Karaoke night. All ages Karaoke AND sushi -- I love that.
Of special note are the cocktails - pricey, but super tasty.
I'm going back next Thursday. You should too.

Cool place and good food.
My boyfriend and I have eaten here a few times and overall they're a decent place to stop and grab a bite.
We've only had the sushi here. I would say that they have a minimal selection of Maki & Specialty rolls and that they have the standard selection of Nigiri/Sashimi. Our favorite roll is the Rocketfish roll. It's a pretty good size roll that's super tasty and will definitely fill you up. To be honest, this roll is what has brought us back when we're in the area. Without it, I don't think we'd have come back here the few times we have, simply because the sushi menu is on the plain/average side and the prices sway more on the steep side for what you're getting... The Rocketfish roll is $15, which despite how much we like it, it's still a few dollars too much for it.
The place is divided into two sections. One section is more loungey with big comfy booths, bar height tables and a full liquor bar. The other section is more of a standard dining area with the sushi bar. Each side is on the small side and caters to a different ambiance. Personally, we enjoy hanging on the lounge side.
Service has been decent the few times we were there. There was only one occasion where we went and the service was slow and lacking. Other than that, I'd say the service is average. -

Kobe beef double rainbow.
The Double Rainbow roll features tuna, yellowtail, salmon, shrimp, crab and spicy tuna. It's about as epic as you can get and is absolutely fantastic.
Another of their specialty rolls was topped with kobe beef. Double epic.
One serving of edamame easily serves three people. The sweet tofu stuffed with rice left us stuffed.
Portions are out of control, and the menu originality is impressive. Keeping them at four stars was never really getting a welcoming vibe from our waitress, and the pop music distracted from the otherwise mellow and modern vibe.
Definitely go for the five star Double Rainbow. -

A decent sushi joint for Potrero Hill. The food is good with some new takes on typical dishes. Try out the garlic edamame, be prepared since it comes piping hot!
Their happy hour is a great deal, not just the beers but $4 rolls. Service was great and we loved the music (Cake played nonstop for the two hours we were there)!
Add in a good location with great views and a chill atmosphere and we have a great neighborhood gem. -

We use a scoutmob coupon so decieded to check it out.
Edamame was dry and hard.
We got the rocketfish roll and a roll with soft shell crab. Both had way too many ingredients in them. Were just not very tasty.
We did get a deep fried shrimp appetizer that was good.
I would never go back here again -

I LOVE Thursday night karaoke! The karaoke starts around 8pm and goes until at least midnight, 1am if there is still a crowd. It is a seriously good karaoke night, with tons of songs and great sound. If you are a karaoke singer and love sushi or Japanese cuisine, you will love this karaoke venue.
Rocketfish is also all ages and kids singing karaoke are always a big hit. And there is a full bar, so moms and dads, you get the best of both worlds! After the kitchen closes it is 21 and over. -

If fresh fish is what you're looking for, then this isn't the place for you. The nigiri and the sashimi we ordered was not very good at all. The rolls, on the other hand, is acceptable.
The service was not very good but was told that one of the servers called in sick. It took forever to get our food and drinks plus the server actually didn't even put in two of our orders and he tried to blame the kitchen for forgetting. That's wrong.
Probably won't be coming back again. Not even for all you can eat sushi. Might be a fun place to have a couple of drinks though. -

3.5 stars.
Food was decent and the service was pretty good. We had an enjoyable time.
There was actually a band/singer there when we dined and we had to pay $10 cover charge per person. While I don't mind supporting a musician ($10 is hardly supporting), I thought it was a bit odd. I guess we could have left, but we chose to stay. I'm glad we did, because she was quite good and we had a good experience! -

We went last night at my veggie friends recommendation. The place was pretty empty, but it was a monday night. The server was cute and friendly. The food came in parts. Our appetizer, then 1 meal, then the side of rice, then another side dish then a long long wait, then some sushi,
then we had to ask for our miso soup, then a long wait, then we had to ask for our other plate which we were told we didn't order. But the server checked and said "oh yeah you did order that" It came a long time later. It was delish but it took forever. the server did comp us a dessert and said it would "be right out" another wait. It was a leisurely dinner, but a mish mash of service. I would go back, but not on my own volition. -

Almost there, but not quite. I really want to give this place more stars because I love the ambiance and our food was pretty decent, but the service was kind of desultory.
We ordered some sake, the calamari, the Double Rainbow roll, and the Seven Sins (chef's sampler of nigiri). The calamari and the sake were pretty standard, Double Rainbow was a fun mishmash, and the Seven Sins was excellent - it was a great way to try some different stuff.
Our server was nice enough, but she didn't explain to us what was what when we got our Seven Sins and she wasn't too helpful in picking out an appropriate sake.
I loved the spacious, asian-contemporary ambiance and the DJ was playin some nice chilled-out tunes. It's a great place to lounge and definitely large enough to accommodate a group.
