Robert Burnaby Park is a bit hidden away, but it's worth seeking out. It's located on a hillside that slopes down from near Edmonds Street to the Trans Canada Highway, and you'll definitely get a workout hiking up and down the forested trails throughout the park.

There's a big off-leash dog park, too, where you can hike with your dog. This is a big attraction for us, as it's not much fun to just go to one of those dog parks that's just a glorified pen. Besides, my guy is the type that needs to run up a hillside to even make a dent in his energy levels; plus he has plenty of olfactory stimulation.

I've never played the game, but the disc golf course looks pretty fun. Apparently, it's Burnaby's only disc golf course, and it will also take players up a steep hill in order to play. An outdoor pool and baseball diamonds round out the offerings in this large but diverse park.

I've heard whispers that one day, they may put in a footbridge over Highway 1 to link Robert Burnaby Park with the Burnaby Lake trails. Now that would make for a cool park to spend the day.

    Off-Leash Dog Park:
It is too bad off leash areas in Burnaby are such a low priority for the Parks department.  Eight months of the year the only people at this park are in the off-leash area which is a low-lying mud hole for the most part.  The poopy bag dispenser is always empty, so don't forget to stuff some extras in your pocket.  For some reason the creek, which is always full of construction sediment from sites upstream has been blocked off for dog use.  Too bad, most dogs liked to get in there and splash and have a drink on a hot day.  The site is hard to access without a car and the gate is sometimes closed and you have to walk in.  Since nobody else uses the park I usually take my dog into the wooded trails off leash (the actual off-leash area is not very large).  Be alert, its a big park and you can lose your bearings among the large trees.

This is a flat trail about 11 km around Burnaby Lake.  Not bad to get away from the city for awhile.  Close and convenient. Pretty good for a training run or running a dog.  If you have a dog, you have to avoid the bird sanctuary there.  In the late summer there are tons of blackberries ripe for the picking.  I

This is one of Burnaby's least used parks, and that's the best part of it.  Due to the fact that it's far away from Skytrain and bus access, you don't find a lot of people at this park but it's nice to visit if you like tennis, swimming, or just hiking on the trails.  It definately has an outdoorsy woody forestsy feel to it and it's in South Burnaby! Wow eh?  The movie Twighlight: New Moon was filmed at this park. It just shows this park can portray an all-American outdoorsy forest park environment.
