2 of us did the thermonuclear challenge. 10 inch sandwich with a pound-pound and a half of beef + a full serving of their thermonuclear sauce. Finish it in 5 minutes and you get a cool t shirt and your pic on the wall.

the sauce is no joke, After finishing the first half in a minute, i saw tears fall onto the second and it hit me that this thing was hot. I picked up the second half and saw the sauce squeeze from all the sides. I'm not going to lie, I thought about quitting.

The staff working were super super cool. They had the enthusiasm  like we were the first ones to try it even though a on average 5 try it every week. They were interested in what we thought about it after and how our mouths were dealing.

For $13 you get a huge sandwich, a free drink, and this is super cool, the best tasting klondike bar of your life. One of the employees actually ran out and got them for us as were finishing the challenge up. Pretty cool move roast beef, pretty cool indeed.
Hah, the sauce was so hot, my friend was using the klondike like chapstick. I didn't eat mine as much as i let it rest on my tongue and in my mouth.

    SO yea,
    -5 stars for the challenge
(the sandwich was super super good, i woulda taken my time with it if not for, you know, the time limit and ghost pepper sauce on it).
    -10 for the staff, and
    -5 stars for the sandwich.

LOVE. IT. a fellow yelper suggested we hit up this place and I was so happy we did. First off, I drive by this place all the time and NEVER saw it. yea it's in the basement so its not sidewalk level, but it is literally a hidden gem! the staff behind the counter is really helpful and patient.

love how the board tells you how to order so there is no confusion. I ordered a regular onion with secret beast sauce and chipotle mayo and lettuce. AMAZING. the roast beef is pink and delicious and tasty, the sauce, DIVINE and such a perfect pairing. this place is awesome, definately going here for a roast beef sandwhich craving :)

Best roast beef sandwich I've ever had. This makes me wonder, though, if I've ever had a good roast beef sandwich before this. For me, this redefines roast beef.

The guy behind the counter recommended the Ianwich (sp?) and it was incredible. I will definitely be coming back to try their other creations.

One of my favorite new places that I've been to in 2012.  And I don't even like roast beef!  Here are a few tips for Roast Beast: (1) Look up the menu beforehand and have a sense of what you want to order, because there are a lot of options for breads, sauces, toppings.  (2) Try a few of the sauces once you get there.  (3)  GET THE PICKLES.

Basically every Friday we try to make a run before we go out, The Ian-wich, with spicy pickles and thermonuclear sauce. Make sure if you come bring a group of friends make them all try Roast Beast, I am sure they will agree its the best place around.

    Please never change.

I like to think of myself as a bit of a beef connoisseur, and things on Yelp have been raving about this place for a while.   So I finally got in my car, became college-y again and headed down to BU central.

Overall, this was good beef.   The meat was quite tasty and the onion roll was spot on.  The staff was very friendly, seeming as they cater to the college crowd.   The knock I have on this place is its authenticity.   When I think of beef, I think of north-shore greek owned establishments, low on love but big on taste.   Beast has the taste but the place seems gimmicy.   Too many "weird" options for toppings etc, and their Beast Sauce is kinda strange.  It seemed to be a mix of bbq sauce and dijon mustard?    I also thought the prices were a bit much - I got a Mega but it wasnt too Mega.  There are northshore spots that it can take a lesson from.

Overall, good place for beef locally.   I'll likely come back, if I had to rate, I'd give a 3.5 stars- but 3 for lack of authenticity.

Great sandwiches!...I go for the Ian-wich. If you like hot, try it with their thermonuclear sauce (don't under estimate the heat)

I always get the beaf, turkey is just okay. I like the meat grilled for the couple of mins, just coz I don't like it cold, tastes better.

    Definitely worth a try.

While I can't say this is the absolute best beef sandwich in town, I will say that it is up there.  The meat is definitely cooked to perfection:  tender, juicy, pink in the middle with a nice roast beef flavor.  I chose the secret beast sauce which to me is some kind of bbq/thousand island mix, which was neither great but not bad either.  I wish I were a regular and got to sample all the sauces they have to offer.  The 3 pepper colby cheese was excellent and the lettuce/tomato/onion rounded rounded it all out.  The wheat bread was toasted and good but not great quality.  Definitely worth the trip into Boston University territory for this sandwich.

Love the Spicy BBQ "Beast Sauce" mixed with the Ginger Wasabi Mayo on a grilled Onion roll.  Love that they have "Yummy Mummy" Brownies, so that I don't have to wait for SOWA marketplace in summer to get those.  Love the big honking roast beef sandwiches.

But the thing I love most is what that taste reminds me of.  One bite and I'm back in the 80's eating sandwiches from "Riley's" at my Grandmother's kitchen table.  Next bite and it's the mid-90's with a late night Roast Beef while looking over my shoulder at "Buzzy's" (now the Liberty Hotel's valet parking area).

They could have a wider menu, and onion rings, and they really should be open later on prime bar nights.  But these guys make good use of the space they have and have done the Boston Roast Beef tradition proud.

Let me just say, this place was very tasty. I'm not a huge roast beef fan, but this place has me reconsidering it. The meat was delicious, and I had the onion roll with lettuce, pepperjack cheese, and the chipotle sauce. I think what I liked most about this place was the mom-and-pop feel. The staff was so nice, helpful, and seemed to genuinely care that we had a good experience.

My only complaint would be it is a bit pricey. A large sandwich, though filling, pushes $9 if you add cheese. That's a little more than I like to spend on a weekday lunch, especially for just a sandwich. That being said, this will be a new splurge. It's good to treat yourself once in awhile, and for that, Roast Beast is a worthy stop.

Very overpriced for roast beef BUT very tasty sauces! Roast beef itself was pretty good but the sauces are deliiiiicious. The staff is very friendly--they even gave us a free little container of ghost chili sauce to take home (everyone should try it! it is the most delicious bbq sauce I have ever had).

Very small space so not a good place to hang out. Good for grabbing a sandwich and eating it in five minutes!

Hint: the smallest size is kinda small.  When getting larger sizes, they only add more meat.  Also, have to get the secret sauce.  ITS AWESOME!

I had the best sandwich I've ever had in my life here! Sure, the menu isn't elaborate, but it doesn't have to be. I'm pretty sure this is what ambrosia tastes like, if Zeus ate roast beef sandwiches. The staff is customer focused. When I told them it was my first time there, DJ, the man behind the counter, gave me a free drink and chips, on the house! They also let me sample all of their sauces before I ordered. The prices are also very reasonable for the portions you receive!

the only other roast beef sandwich as good was in Poughkeepsie, NY, at Rossi Rosticceria Deli.  The sandwich is cold, the roast beef medium rare to rare, but not too rare.  The onion roll I chose added to the sandwich, and they have many ways of building your sandwich.  The staff is great, really focused on the customer, offering samples of sauces, and making me feel special.

The location has a dive look along the tracks of the green line, too far down the tracks to be near anything.  But the interior is clean, the staff too, and the sandwich is one I will be back for, and with friends.

Shout out to son John for turning me on to this place!!

Found myself in Allston during the lunch hour and just so happened to walk past this joint.  Realizing that this place was the Yelp celebrity that it is, I decided to give it a go.

It swooned me with the pickles (get a sample!) and all the sauces (some amazing BBQ/mayonnaise mixture induced an overwhelming urge to nom everything). I'm not even a huge fan of roast beef, but when I saw them heaping the beautiful thing together I knew I was in for a treat.

Honestly, it seemed like my sandwich was more about the "AMAZIN CONDIMENTS/BREAD" than the meat, but I enjoyed it thoroughly and would come back.

In America we have a love of choice:  choose from 50 different types of chips at the supermarket, choose from 50 ways to have your coffee made at *cough* Starbucks, or choose from 50 pages of food over at the Cheesecake Factory.  We love choice, but at the end of the day, we end up getting paralyzed by it.

Roast Beast doesn't get down with this noise.  The charm is in the mastery of one thing, a focus on bringing you the best roast beef or turkey sandwich possible.  Choice lies in the way you build your sandwich, with a good number of combinations, along with a friendly staff to show you the ropes.

On the helpful suggestion of the staff, I opted for a large ($10) roast beef on the onion roll with half of their beast sauce and half chipotle mayo.  I went with all the veggies (all three :-/ ), the 3 pepper colby, and a side of the spicy pickles (don't forget these).

Now, I'll say straight out the gate that this sandwich was fantastic.  The onion roll was superb, the sauce was sweet and tangy and savory in all the right ways, and the caramelized onions were a great touch.  The roast beef was very thinly sliced, and was a solid portion for $10.  The spicy pickles were to die for, and I considered ordering some more as they tasted like they were soaked in tangy bbq sauce and then hit with a little spice at the end-  wonderfully juicy, with a little acidity and a kick of spice.

Here's the thing though-  if you're going to only do one thing, it'd better be perfect.  That roast beef better crawl off the plate, crawl up my arm, and whisper into my ear that I am perfect just the way I am.  Unfortunately, I just didn't get that much flavor out of the roast beef.  All the components were there and were executed perfectly, but I would have liked to see a little more from the main ingredient, the one that brought me there in the first place.

All in all, Roast Beast isn't pretentious, has a great service staff, a unique vibe with some cool touches (lab coats for the staff was a win for me), and a local challenge to create some artifacts (get your picture up on the wall and a t-shirt if you can consume a sandwich in 5 minutes with their ghost chili based sauce).  So instead of being paralyzed by a plethora of food options, come down to Roast Beast when you know what you want, and know it will be done well.

As far as Roast Beef North Shore Style sandwiches, this is the creme de la creme,  this is about as good as it gets.  $8.00 gets you a large 10oz of roast beef on a tasty crisp keiser roll.  They offer numerous cheeses. I did smoked Gouda, numerous sauces, I tried there house sauce, a tasty honey tomato bbq sauce, and they threw all the vegetables on there and some caramelized onions for free since it was my first time.  The people who worked there were friendly, prompt (I was in a hurry), and i will definitely say that i need to go back another time when i can talk with them more.  There defintely a one trick pony but this is how it should be.  If you want sushi, you don't go to a authentic BBQ smokehouse.  Places like this are the future of good food.  Focusing on quality over large selection makes room to truly tweak the thing you do and aim for ultimate perfection.  Yummy

They take the Boston tradition of Kelly's to the next level. After having Roast Beast, Kelly's will just be dissapointing from now on.

    OVERHYPED COLD SANDWICHES!

don't get me wrong, the staff made our experience WONDERFUL because they were so helpful & let us sample the sauces & fixings (like sweet pickles!) before we ordered!

HOWEVER.. i expected my roast beef sammie to come out nice & hot w/ flavorful meat... BUT INSTEAD the sandwich was COLD & the meat was pretty bland

ALTHOUGH i do give them credit for the meat being PERFECTLY THIN & their russian dressing & horse radish mustard (you can ask for as many sauces as you want! try 'em all & jus dip your sammie if you can't commit) but sauce alone shouldn't be what makes a sammie tasty

NOTE: in terms of sizes, the larger sizes just have more meat, the actual roll holding the sammie doesn't get larger!

few counter seats if you want to enjoy your sammie ASAP

After seeing everybody rave about this place and seeing it crawl up to the number one spot on Yelp, I had to try it. And while picking a friend up in the area for some lunch, this seemed like the logical spot to hit up for a quick and affordable meal. After finding parking and walking over, we arrived at the location and saw a basement. Not  one of those creepy, there-might-be-dead-hookers kind of basements, but instead a white-walled, clean one featuring some friendly folks behind the counter. We proceeded to walk in.

Upon being greeted, we walked up to the small counter and looked at the back wall where the menu is written on a giant chalkboard. Not much diversity here folks, just some North Shore-style roast beef sandwiches. The toppings are a bit more diverse than the ones you'd find at Kelly's but the options are limited nonetheless.

I decided to get a large sandwich ($8) on an onion roll (recommended  to me by the staff) with some lettuce, tomato and cheddar cheese (50¢). As a sauce, after much hesitation, I decided to get their 'secret beast sauce' which figured would be the best one since it features the establishment's name and thus should be the logical choice. I overlooked other interesting ones like their horseradish one, their thermonuclear one (no thanks!) or even their BBQ one.

I added a diet coke and my bill was around $11. I sat down at the counter against the wall and a couple of minutes later one of the two employees brought us our food. I must admit that the sandwich looked incredible. The onion roll was big, the lettuce was finely chopped, the roast beef pilled decently high. My first bite confirmed it, it tasted good. However a couple of bites in and my sandwich fell apart, half of the roast beef sliding off and collapsing onto my plate. That kind of annoyed me a lot but hey, it happens.

So why not five stars? Well maybe because there's little need-to-go-back factor since it's only roast beef. Had they had more than one type of sandwich, I would probably be apt to return a bit more but just one type? C'mon... Sure the roast beef is good, hell, it's one of the best but at the end of the day, it's still sandwich and not an averagely priced one at that.

The place is clean, the staff is friendly and they accept card payments ($5 minimum).  I will have to return though as I didn't get pickles. Yeah I screwed up and completely forgot. Shame on me.

Oh and did I mention that they have a food challenge? Adam Richman you'd better come here and try it! Actually it seems a bit easy though, there's already a lot of people who have completed it based on the pictures on the wall. You have to two large sandwiches covered in their thermonuclear sauce in under five minutes. You get a t-shirt. Not for me personally but maybe for you?

Roast Beast has roast beef to die for! It is located in a cool looking basement sort of place on the corner of two popular streets. The inside of it has a very warm theme and just feels cozy when you enter. The workers are VERY friendly and would probably give you an entire free roast beef sandwich if you asked. They gave us what felt like all the sauces and pickles to sample. They also let us sample the ghost pepper (the hottest pepper in the world). I ordered a large roast beef on deli bread with cheddar cheese and the beast sauce. Again, I sampled all the sauces and I thought the beast sauce was the best sauce. The sandwich seemed like an average size of a large. All in all it was great. - I highly recommend the onion roll, its delicious.

Good roast beef for Boston, but the best beef sanwiches aren't found here - they are on the North Shore. Try Nick's in Peabody or Harrison's in North Andover. Those are the original beef places, and they STILL dominate (and forget Kelly's, they aren't even in the same class).

I got the regular with beast sauce on an onion roll today @ Roast Beast. Great bread and excellent quality meat. But roast beef without fries? Those two need to go together. Also - they had no ketchup. I'm not the only person that likes beef dipped in ketchup.

I'll still recommend this place though. If I worked in the area, I'd probably eat it once per week.

A five star joint with about 100 reviews on yelp? Now that's quite impressive...

UNFORTUNATELY, I can't give it as many stars as many other reviewers. Why you ask? Yes, the sandwich was tasty, albeit slightly overpriced. Yes, the restaurant was not a hole-in-the-wall, but rather, a whole-in-the-ground, just how I like my restaurants. And yes, the workers were nice and patient and offered samples of their various sauces.

SO WHY ONLY THREE STARS? My friends, the roast beef sandwich was only good because of the various sauces they put on it. The component parts themselves were kinda bland (besides the pickles, which were quite delicious by itself). I had the bread by itself.. soft, chewy.. but only slightly onion-y. The roast beef by itself was also FLAVORLESS.

NOT TO MENTION, the whole sandwich was barely even lukewarm. A good roast beef sandwich, in my opinion, should be served hot, the meat should have a robust flavor it in itself, and the sauce should only serve to bring out the taste of both the meat and the bread... not OVERPOWER it so that it's the only thing you can taste.

To me, my sandwich simply served as a vehicle upon which the sauces were delivered to my taste buds.. kinda like how bagels are meant simply as a carrier of delicious cream cheese.

Sorry Roast Beast, i REALLY wanted to like you, but youre just another notch on the belt for me.

Do it BBQ style. Horseradish style. Chipotle style. It's all EFFING slap-your-hand-on-the-table good.

Every aspect- the rolls, the meat, the onions (oh, GOD the onions), the pickles, the cheese- perfect.

I got an Ianwich and it was delicious, the flavor from the sauce was amazing, but it wasn't spread around at first, so my first bite was actually disappointing. Make sure to spread the sauce around to make sure that every bite is full of that awesome flavor.

My other complaints would be the that the roast beef itself was a bit bland and my onion roll was overtoasted. Also the price range is definitely a bit pricey for a sandwich.

tl;dr - The Secret Beast Sauce carries this sandwich, make sure to spread it around before you bite.

Roast Beast is a beast of a sandwich shop!  First, I was knocked off my feet by the delicious smell wafting out the open door.  Then, no sooner had I gotten back on my feet, I was blown away by my sandwich.

I really have no complaints - I came hungry, I left full of delicious roast beef.  The meat was perfectly tender.  The onion roll was fresh and warm and loaded with onions.  Add some spicy pickles, their famous Beast sauce, chipotle mayo, lettuce, and pepperjack cheese, and you've got yourself the best lunch you'll have in a long time.  Roast Beast really has earned each and every one of those five stars that proudly sit on top of its Yelp page.  What more could a girl possibly want from a sandwich?

Wait, I know the answer to that:  More of it.  Next time, I'll be ordering a large instead of a regular.

The roast beef sandwich isn't my favorite , but as far as sammys go in Boston, I've had none better then the one i got today at Roast Beast. I had the "Ianwich" -  substituting the Beast Sauce with the Thermo Sauce. GREAT move for anyone who likes it spicy! The active pepper is the Ghost pepper, the spiciest on the planet, (apparently its used for non-lethal hand grenades in India!) As a spice fiend, i appreciate any sauce that will test my taste buds, but the Thermo has incredible flavor to back the extreme heat. The owner even hooked me up with a little to-go cup of it to take home!

Great people, great food, anyone in the Boston University, Allston, Kenmore area should make a point to check this place out. Cheers.

By far and wide the best roast beef sandwich I've had! After going to Brooklyn's Brennan & Carr's (Man vs. Food) hot beef sandwich place, my buddies and I wanted to find a quality roast beef place, here in Boston. After doing some quick searches, I found this place, which is great because I live in the area.

This place is right on comm. ave, but can be hard to spot, because it's located underground and parking can be a beastly pain, but if you're like us you'd ride your bike right onto the street and park outside of it (yeah extreme douche move, but you do what you do when you're hungry!). Workers are very friendly and will take their time and explain how the menu works and let you try certain things, also they're extra cool because some of them are fellow riders. It's pretty simply you go in, order the size you want, type of cheese, and toppings. I usually get the mega, with chipotle sauce  or sometimes the secret beast sauce (some type of bbq), with three pepper cheese, and sauteed onions. All that sandwiched between a toasted bulky onion roll. For you extreme beasts, they have the thermonuclear challenge, which is equivalent to 2 large sandwiches topped off with their thermo sauce, made from the ghost chili. I've tried the sauce and that my friend is FIRE. If you're able to eat that thing under 5 minutes you get a t-shirt and a photo on the wall.

The food is good at a good price and have been here a few times since. My friend and I have been training for this challenge. Best to know you'll be seeing my photo on the wall of beasts!

I am so incredibly happy that after weeks and weeks of passing Roast Beast every day on the T, my boyfriend and I finally decided to actually stop and give it a try! I should first mention that I am usually NOT a roast beef sandwich kind of person, and roast beef is the only thing you're going to get at this place. So imagine how ecstatic I was to get one of the most amazing sandwiches I have ever tasted from a place that only serves a type of sandwich I wouldn't usually order or enjoy!

We have been back now at least 4 or 5 times since our first trip to Roast Beast, and every single time I tell myself I am going to write them a stellar Yelp review. I finally got around do writing this, as my first Yelp review ever. Roast Beast is amazingly delicious - my favorite sandwich: Onion roll, horseradish mustard, chipotle mayo, SPICY PICKLES, and American cheese (because it melts the best).

5 stars just like everyone else.  I wish I could give it 6 stars.

The roast beef is AMAZING and the staff knows the product like the back of their hand.  They know how to sell what you'll like and as a result, you end up with an outstanding meal.

    Welcome to the neighborhood.

Checked it out because it was the HIGHEST RATED BOSTON RESTAURANT on Yelp, and it didn't disappoint.  Got the mega SAM-which and it knocks Kelly's out of the watah.  Too many sauces I wanted to try, so stuck with the standard Beast Sauce + Chipotle Mayo for the first go-around.  Next up may be Tiger Sauce and/or Thermonuclear Sauce.

-Must get spicy pickles.  They're listed as a side and not a topping, but holy cow they were good on the sandwich.

    Nitpicks:
-Beyond the pickles, the toppings options are scarce (lettuce, tomato, onion).  I am excessively topping-oriented beyond the norm, so I could have used a bit more variety.
-The location leaves a lot to be desired (best bet is to get in the Comm Ave carriage lane inbound, there are always some open spots at the curve where the carriage lane merges with regular traffic).  Should have snapped up the location down the block before UBurger moved in.
-Maybe just a teeeensy bit too expensive.  Mega costs $11 and change with the pickles.  They don't short you on the beef by any means, but the price point of some of the fast casual competitors in the area is a little more favorable.

Those are total nitpicks, though - enough to knock off one star (I'm stingy with the perfect ratings), but don't take away from the fact that they serve a damn outstanding roast beef sandwich.
