There are very few restaurants in Victoria that I would qualify in the "mid-range" for price point...at least any that are worth spending money at.  This is one of those gems with great food at decent prices.   Although the market-style set up leaves something to be desired in terms of the ambiance, the food is so freaking delicious, I would continue to eat here even if the place looked like a total dump (which it doesn't, it's just really casual.)

The crispy caperberries in the Cesar salad are unbelievably good and the homemade pastas are impeccably prepared.  By far the best pasta carbonara I've ever had.  Big chunks of pancetta, large pieces of roasted garlic, and just a hint of egg and cream to soften up the fresh ground pepper.

They had a special beet caprese salad when the tomatoes weren't in season and I think I might even like it better than the original version.  (Certainly way better than trying to work with unripe tomatoes!)

    Well done, all around.

I blame the LOLcats for the overuse of "noms," but really...there were some delicious noms here.  The BF and I came here for dinner because it's near his house and I get dragged to all these places he wants to try.  I am so glad I did.

Because it was a relatively nice day, we elected to sit outside, although were warned that the wind could make life difficult for us.  We started with a bottle of red, natch, and perused the menu.  Although the gnocchi was a main dish, we elected to have it as an appetizer.  OH MY GOD it's good.  And I know good gnocchi.

For our main courses, I had the steak with gorgonzola, and he had the pork.  Both were amazing, and there was even polenta (my fave) as a supplement dish.  I'm not going to get into boring detail about every flavor, but trust me, it's good.

Of course, towards the end of the meal, the wind had to rear it's ugly head, and a glass of wine spilled.  No worries, as I was in the mood for port anyway, which went nicely with the chocolate tort- the BF's favorite part.

Service was great, although it was fairly empty that night.  I think we'll definitely be going back.

Found this place on yelp, so I thought I would check it out. Wanted some good Italian food outside the tourist area of Victoria. The food was amazing and relatively cheap.  My girlfriend and I split both a pasta dish and a pizza.  The pasta had fresh hand made noodles and a great sauce and the pizza was thin crust with a delicious pesto sauce.  I like the setting of the restaurant and the staff was really friendly.  It is the type of restaurant that you order up at the counter, and they bring your food out to you.  Just a heads up that they only accept cash or debit cards.

Beth, who is the lovely woman of my life, picked this place out one Saturday night. It was a short drive from  her house and next door to a bakery that I am itching to check out.

It was weird because the place was so packed that they wound up putting us at a table that was directly next to the hostess' stand. Not like neighboring it but  right up against it. It reminded me of when I would get in trouble at school and the teacher would make me take a desk that was right up against hers so that she could make sure I did my work.

Anyway, the hostess wasn't at her stand very much so even though it was a little awkward it was never bad. Just weird. Anyway, the food was delicious. We split two entrees. A personal pizza and some kind of pasta. Maybe a mushroom thing spaghetti thing. I don't remember. I remember two things about it:

    1. How good it was. My pasta was delicious and served in a not too huge size so that I didn't feel sick afterward.
    2. There were no bells and whistles. At this place, if you order mushroom pasta, you're going to get mushroom, pasta, and sauce. They don't screw around with extra stuff here to balloon up the price.

I was happy with my food. The pizza was delicious too. I'd totally come back.

Casual, relaxed but really great Northern Italian food. The service is terrific, they happily give you background on the food -- what's what, what's from Italy, what's local. Great wine list, homemade pasta, great cheeses.

It is in a really ugly apartment building. Don't let that put you off!

Finally made a second visit and was thrilled to be back.

There are two things that I don't trust people to make: steak and roast chicken because both are almost always overdone. La Piola has the steak part down pat, I asked for a medium rare flank steak and got it exactly how I like it with a very rare middle and a nice layer of char on the outside.

The funghi pasta was terrific as well, homemade pasta is really something more people should have on a regular basis.

I'm sure there's food that's better than La Piola but I'm not sure why I'd bother when what's on offer is terrific.

This place does great northern Italian food! I have spent lots of time in northern Italy and La Piola is the real deal! As good as it gets!
They have a new, more-casual "cafe" format and outdoor patio seating.
