Review from Tessa H.
Greater Vancouver Regional District, BC
I'm a bit of a nerdy fan of this place, I'll admit it. But I have to say what it is exactly that I LOVE about it, because another reviewer mentioned something about the staff not smiling--I am VERY picky when it comes to customer service, and while the staff may not be "bubbly", (which some people maybe expect), I always get the sense that they actually care, and also that they want to educate you about coffee without making you feel dumb or like you're not as cool as they are (which they would have the right to, because they're all insanely knowledgable).
Of course, the coffee is always excellent--definitely top-notch. And the baking (from what I've had), is delicious.
So I just have to say the atmosphere is always great, the decor and design are stunning (logos + branding are flawless!), and even though there aren't many free seats usually, I'll just wait my turn. It's worth it. -

I am no coffee connoisseur so I am not going to pretend I know anything about coffee. My hubby loves his coffee so when I read the reviews of this place, I had to bring him to check it out.
Awesome atmosphere with the brick walls and the booth seats. And the people who make the coffee seem like real artists. I loved their latte and my hubby liked their coffee.
Enough said. -

Decor and concept 5 stars. Cool staff.
I took the servers recommendation and had brewed coffee and let him choose since it was my first time. I did not enjoy or finish my coffee. I admit, I am not a coffee expert but I do like a "good" cup. For me personally, if I just have to put a bit of cream its a good cup. If I have to put lots of cream and some sugar, it's drinkable. But if I have to put lots of cream and lots of sugar and I still can't drink it... I'd rather have tea.
I am a however a brownie expert. The gluten-free one was def the wrong choice. Gave that away.
I do want to love this place so I will go back and try a few other things.
Update to follow.
FYI, they DO have Wi-Fi. -

A gorgeous space to sip on your perfectly pulled espresso while admiring the design around the walls. I would frequent this cafe daily if it wasn't located in downtown. The parking meters would pay for an extra coffee...
If the coffee is so good, why the minus 1 star? Seating is limited with too many people sitting with no drinks on their table.
I may be a tad grumpy since I'm here to get my caffeine fix, give me a few sips and I'll be right as rain. But the staff working the register doesn't have an excuse to be Mr. Unsmiley, you work in a cafe, you have unlimited source of coffee. Crack a smile would ya?Listed in: Coffee

This place was recommended to me by locals. I think its one of the best cafes in Vancouver. That said, it's still not my favourite. 3.5. Hours could be better / earlier (caffeine needs to be the first thing in the morning) and the flow of traffic was a bit awkward to me...
Great quality selection of beans and nice staff. -

I want to like this place as it has all the right bits, a good atmosphere, great style, and friendly owners and staff. Unfortunately these things are MUCH less important to me than a good espresso. The problem is that in three attempts thus far I just can't get a decent espresso. My last was too thin and hot/over extracted. The previous visit's espresso was far too bright and my first visit was just way WAY off. They offer a choice of different espressos at any given time and this could be part of the problem. Dialing in one espresso blend and keeping it consistent throughout the day is hard enough, never mind two. Perhaps less variety and more focus?
The espresso is served in small glasses which is different but doesn't really work for me. The glass ends up being too hot to handle comfortably. The classic espresso cup plus saucer would be much preferred.
On the plus side they stock a good selection of beans for purchase.
Owners, if you're reading this please take my critiques constructively. If I didn't like your establishment at all I probably wouldn't even both writing a review. Also, I'm just a really picky espresso drinker :)
Edit: After messaging with John I'm certain that I've just had the perfect storm of bad luck in terms of my experience here. Creating a truly great tasting straight espresso shot is no easy task and even the best only hit the mark ~50% of the time at best in my opinion. After John's description of the steps involved in their quality control I'm certain that's I've just had some bad luck and my next experience will be positive. I'm looking forward to it!Comment from John G. of Revolver 4/12/2012

BEST new coffee joint in the hood!
This place is so fun...they make my coffee addiction look like a past time rather than a conviction :)
I buy all my beans here as the selection is crazy good. Usually roasted within days before you buy they also will grind them for you if you haven't recently purchased a new kick ass grinder like me :) (Army n Navy on Cordova $29.99 has lots of settings and does an automatic grind) -

The atmosphere is nice, well decorated, although too small in my opinion. I really like to spend some time with a cup of coffee, and I found the place a bit too tiny for that. You'd rather grab the coffe and leave the place.
I loved that they care so much for your coffe and make it in front of you, it's so relaxing seeing the waiters doing it. The service is nice, by the way.
The music is kind of loud but nice, and it's kind of a busy place.
I would give it less stars if I was located in any other city, but considering there are not many nice cafes in downtown Vancouver, I thought it was a good idea to give it 4 stars. It's actually one of my favorite cafes in Vancouver!

They serve Phil & Sebastian coffee (woot yyc) and they do it with style! Damn! This place represents a lot of what I love about Gastown. It's old and new with the buzz of caffeine running through it.
They also have a sweet wall installation of a world map representing where the beans are from, pretty nifty. -

I really had to add another star after this last visit. I had no complaints. I mean, where do you find a better overall, coffee spot in Vancouver?
I got to sit in the window on the ironically hard fold-up chair while people-watching, and the super nice coffee dude brought the coffee to us. I watched a dude stand outside drinking his coffee out of the glass and he looked like he could have been in a commercial. I really enjoyed every part of it. I mean, the coffee is soo good that people will order it on a freezing cold day and drink it outside in an open glass.
I enjoyed listening to Sam Roberts, too, but still missed the S & G of my last visit!Listed in: ***** Five Star Faves *****, Anything but Starbucks....

Review from Cathy S.
I never realized how many seriously crappy cups of coffee I have purchased in my life until I had my first espresso from Revolver.
The espresso I chose had a bean from Brasil with chocolatey, nutty notes. Who knew that coffee could be so smooth, creamy, naturally sweet and complex flavored? Certainly not me before this.
As someone who is likely perceived as the antithesis of a hipster, I was not made nor did not I feel uncomfortable in this cafe, although I probably would only choose to linger if I wanted to watch the earnest baristas perform their coffee alchemy.
I would go out of my way to pick up a to-go cup of this liquid manna from heaven. Minus .5 stars for having an ambiance which didn't lend itself to lingering. 4.5 stars. -

One of the best cafes in Canada.
All the coffee is done via pour-over method, which takes a little more time but pays off in spades. The Americano was as good as you could hope it could be... they use Phil and Sebastian coffee from Calgary. The place is pretty tight, so it's better for a grab n' go for a stroll through Gas-Town. -

Hands down on of the best cappuccinos I have ever had. I also, have tried the regular brew and cookies which are also good. That said, for $3.50 the cappuccinos are a better value.
Who cares about the crowd? If they are hipsters, homeless, preppy etc. it does not matter. Nice staff and a nice atmosphere is all you need. This place is a nice Yuppie-Coffee spot that I can appreciate from time to time.

ALERT: I've never sworn in a review before and I've been saving up my expletives for someone special...
I fucking love Revolver. I want to write them a goddamn sonnet. Bloody hell, these guys know their fucking coffee! Look above, you see those 19 mother-fuckin' check-ins?
The first day I went in I watched as Chris carefully weighed and extracted a cup of coffee using a Chemex carafe and Coava filter. Holy shit, that coffee was tasty. I asked about his technique which triggered his Coffee Nerd Radar. He sat down at my table and we chatted about the coffee scene in Vancouver.
Coffee Nerds like myself are referred to as "The Third Wave." First wave grew up drinking Folgers, and MJB. The only redeeming feature of which was that the can would be used for stowing live bait in corny coming-of-age movies. Second wave are people who grew up drinking stale scorching hot swill or candy cane flavoured Mocha-frappa-yo-mamma-cinnos from the big chains.
Revolver is not a roaster so why would they only brew one brand of beans like other places? Good freaking question! Instead they offer a variety of roasters. I've been introduced to beans you can't get just any goddamn place. Coava, Phil & Sebastian from Calgary, Ritual from SanFran.
I once asked them for a second coffee to go on my way out. When Chris asked what beans I wanted I asked him to pick something for me. He brewed up something from their personal stash. They had received a single bag of beans from Square Mile Roasters in England and brewed up a cup for me.
I learn a helluva lot just watching their technique. They offer a shit-load of brewing methods, Aeropress, Pourover (Coava / Chemex), French Press, Brewt, even a goddamn Syphon. And if you're curious or skeptical they offer tasting flights. A side by side comparison of three different methods. Or a comparison of three different beans.
The price of a cup is a tad higher than some other places but Jesus H. Christ you cheap bastard it's great coffee and it's a small business. Besides you can always get the coffee of the day, try somethin' new and save a buck.
George is also a bit of a tea expert. Apparently. I haven't tried it since tea is for pussies. I met a client there once. He ordered a hot chocolate. He has better taste in photographers than he does beverages. He said the cocoa was exceptional.
George and Chris and the boys from Revolver have pushed me off the coffee cliff into full-on Java-Nerdom. I bought a scale and have started measuring my grounds to water ratio. This allows me to brew even the lightest roasts at home without them tasting sour.
The place is small and charming. You ever walk into an Indian restaurant and, after noticing that it's full of Indo-Canadian families, feel assured it has received endorsement from the community? Well every time I go to Revolver I run into owners of my other favorite cafes in town. As well as the boys from Pourhouse.
Sorry about the explicit language but fuck! These guys know coffee.

So I was raving about Elysian's coffee some months ago - I think Revolver's coffee is definitely comparable in quality. I really like how they allow you to choose the espresso base for your latte, and what a smooth latte it was (I picked the Owls Howl). Their drip coffee concept, individually brewed for each cup and cleverly charged at "market price" gives the cafe a premium feel enjoyed by those looking for affordable luxury.
At $4/10 oz for a latte, compared to $3.64/12 oz, for a Starbucks latte, it's almost 32% more expensive. For a one-off (or two....maybe three...) I think the taste justifies the extra change. However, from the samples I've had, their baked goods are WAY overpriced e.g. muffins are $3.75, small, greasy and mediocre in taste.
Overall, is it worth a visit? Only you're there for the coffee. I wouldn't make it a habit if you are budget conscious - think of your coffee bill increasing by 32%.
A solid 4 stars. Change up the baked goods and it'll easily get bumped up to 4.5 :)
**Correction: Muffins are $3.25 - I am quite impressed that the owner took the time to respond to my review and correct my error, AND ask about which muffin I tried for QC purposes (see comments below). -
Review from Scott H.
I've got a problem with Vancouver coffee shops. Revolver, Milano, G and so on are all finding different "better" ways brew coffee, but they all taste the same. So does this justify the increased price?
I drink my coffee black (like my heart) and the only different "better" coffee I've had is the kenyan brew from JJ Bean and that's 2.25. Revolver's home drip cost 3.50, which is highway robbery for a black coffee.
As a result no coffee shop is going to get higher than a 3 from me.
HOWEVER what Revolver does have is very nice peoples working there and a great little space in Gastown. I'll stop in again for sure, but I'll have to cash in bottles to justify the expenditure. -

* Serious cafe *
These folks are serious about their coffee. Combine that with a nice "non-sterile non-glass tower non-Starsucks non-generic" kind of feel and this cafe is a winner.
I had an espresso, and was given the choice of two types of beans. When I asked which would be better for espresso the very serious guy behind the counter said, "That is a tough call. They both work really well. Do you prefer a smoother finish? The single origin is a bit smoother on the finish." Sold.
The espresso was served in a glass, had a good crema, and yes, a smooth finish. Photo of the espresso on the nice wooden counter by the window with a view of the street: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

Rumours can be true sometimes.... As a picky coffee hound I am, I find my self stumbling in the Revolver (like on purpose) cause its getting Yelped & Yelped as the best coffee in town...
So I said to the DJ thats spinning cool retro vinyl tunes off an 25yr old turn table... Give me one of those Espresso Macchiatos thats hittin the news stand... So the DJ hipster cool nice dude says; "We have two beans for you to pick from or we can pick for you"... Hmmm I said well nobody gets to pick my beans... please tel me the difference... Daaaa door number 1 (like I understood what he said-nope)...
Sittin at the the long table window staring into space I felt like I was back in Vancouver some 25-30 years ago..... with a cool song from the early 70s... so I pulled out my iPhone to do a Shazam what song is this app.... but my 2010 spiffy Personal mobile device has a dead battery, gulp....
So I sit there enjoying my amazingly very tasty Espresso Macchiato like I was would do back in 1973..Listed in: My morning coffee crawl

I recall a few years ago, when hipsters and lefty politicos were predicting the gentrification of the downtown East side. I've seen things drift that way for a while, with cheap pubs giving way to expensive sandwich shops.
Gentrification finally arrived with Revolver. It has the cool, distinct feel of Gastown, it makes a very good cup of coffee, and at $4, it charges a small fortune for it. That's not a cup of Joe the locals can afford, unless they are the local lawyers, engineers or designers.
Drinking coffee here is a mix of the ordinary and sacred. It's still a coffee house, with the regular diner tables and window seats, but the place has an altar, where blessed water is ritualistically turned to coffee, and where the sacred beans are prepared for a Eucharist. Only, they do not quite succeed in pulling off a Starbucks, where drinking coffee is meant to be something grander. Here, the illusion does not work.
I know I'm in the minority on this - that's why this is the only three-star review. But I have lived enough in poverty to appreciate good value, notwithstanding my improved fortunes, I still recall the mixed feelings at buying my first 420 muffin ($4+tax) this fall: I loved the joke, but hated the price.
So, this place is definitely not for everyone. If you can afford it, you'll buy a very good tasting coffee. Just don't expect a refill. -

One of my favourite coffee shops in the city! They've got a beautiful space with amazing wall art (metal nails that make up a world map) and killer coffee. My go-to drink is the macchiato which is always made perfectly with the silkiest foam. I really love how they take care in making their coffee.
They also have a great offering of baked goods and sweets. Gluten-free people take note, the GF chocolate cake is amazing. -
Review from Brent F.
I've been waiting months for these guys to open and change the face of Vancouver coffee. As an admitted coffee-bar-snob, few coffee bars satisfy me with their menu, their style, their efficiency, or their coffee options. Vancouver has been a bit disappointing for some time - so much sameness and a general lack of engagement (on par with what you can get in LA, SF and Portland). Finally Vancouver has its spot!
Designed by baristas, who exude passion for coffees and their craft. Revolver is not your typical coffee bar. There are no ceramic cups, no menu with a long list of beverages and sizes. The customer interaction does not center around "here/take away" "12 or 16 oz" or "what type of milk?" The focus here is on the coffee, and the brew method. Pour over? Aeropress? French press? Espresso? The answer is always "yes." Multiple coffee options from multiple boutique roasters. All of it in season, and roasted within the past few days.
If you're interested in exploring specialty coffee as a culinarian, or as a consumer, or as a design or craftsperson, then Revolver Coffee is your spot. Its about the ongoing exploration of coffee. No pretense. You're never wrong here, there are no bad requests, no attitude, and no false niceties. The service is genuine. The design is smart. And the interaction is unique.
Come check it out. If it doesn't change your feeling for specialty coffee in Vancouver, then you already have a spot and that's totally cool. But at least give it a try. -

The coffee was great, similar in taste and consistency as other notable cafes in the Vancouver area. Prices are competitive as well.
I just hated the urban hipster vibe. Of all cafes I've been to in my short life so far, this was easily the most pretentious crowd. I actually felt deeply uncomfortable as I entered the door. I don't know if I would go back again just because of the attitudes. The staff are nice; just the customers are kinda... idk. I guess if you fit into that crowd, then you probably wouldn't want riffraff like me there either.Comment from John G. of Revolver 1/4/2012

My new favorite place for a perfect place for any espresso based drinks.
The place reminds me of cafes in NY, the wall deco is modern and makes the best use of the small space. The seating is limited but once you sit down at a booth it's always entertaining to watch those walk-ins and the art of creating a superb cup of coffee using various devices! The baristas are seamlessly moving behind the counter and they really care about creating a perfect cup. Yes, the timer is on the counter! It is a shame I only visit once a week.. :( -

A truly one-of-a-kind coffee shop experience in Vancouver where the barrista's put some solid TLC into every cup they make ... and they make it right before your eyes! It's along the little Gastown strip of goodness on Cambie with Nuba and Meat & Bread only steps away.
I came for the first time last week and I've been back twice since! Bustling at every hour of the day with small but steady lineups with regulars galore, this little hot spot offers a variety of delicious hand-crafted coffee in a friendly, social atmosphere. You'll see lots of meetups and workers in the area grabbing their daily coffee/tea to go. Love it! -

Dreamy. Sorry, I have nothing to say that contradicts what any other Yelper has written here. I'd been waiting to try it and it was everything I expected and more. I dragged my Seattle ex here -- I brought her to one of the Italian cafes on Commercial once years ago and when I asked her what she thought she said the coffee was "adequate." (Hoping for an upgrade).
They are nice to kids, even little ones who inevitably spill, yell, break and invade other patrons' psychic space despite repeated admonitions. For such a small, hip spot this is a rarity but only adds to their perfection.
Great cappuccinos, decent oversize thumbprint cookie, no-fuss, no-charge baby cappuccinos (foam only). Our third friend had a pot of tea which was brought, timed, and had the leaves removed at the correct mark. She was a bit taken aback as she prefers to control this process herself but I love places where the experts are in charge.
I did my one cafe-nerd thing which was to sidle up at the end and ask them if they made cortados. These are Spanish espresso-and-milk drinks served in short glasses which to my mind have the perfect coffee-to-milk ratio -- somewhere between a cappuccino and a macchiato. Not only did they know what it was, they would make it for me if I asked, AND they taught me another word for it! Swoon. -

Ritual No. 1: Lounging on a Saturday (they're closed Sundays) with their daily brew.
Ritual No. 2: Chatting with the baristas who TRULY love the art of their craft.
Ritual No. 3: Being able to walk out the door with a bag of SF's Ritual Beans in hand, after having also ordered it from the Daily Special. This actually perked up a pretty grey morning.
*Ritual in SF is where I had "the best americano, of my life." http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
The prose that flows through others who have left Yelp "love notes" about Revolver's atmosphere, long bar and artwork is deep. I'd take a sip of your hand poured over or siphoned brew and continue reading.
Additional fan mail: "This latte might just trump Discovery" said Peter S when I hand delivered it to him earlier this morning. "With a latte made this well, there's no need for sugar." Eureka, people - me thinks Revolver will singlehandedly bring on his sugar-hiatus.

Finally a coffee experience that is as good and pure as some of the great coffeehouses in Portland like Barista and Public Domain. The guys are passionate and knowledgeable about the coffee bean and have a great selection of tasting options that change each day including Phil & Sabastian from Calgary and Ritual from San Francisco. They also have coffee tasting flights.
Revolver is owned by the Gianniakos family that also own Cafe Crema in West Vancouver. The four sons operate it and without exception, all know their coffee.
I had a 5.5oz cappucino that was smooth, perfectly balanced and served in a glass like it should be. I chose the Ethiopian Phil & Sabastian bean. They also use various brewing methods for regular coffee. They have Aeropresses, siphons, clevers or French presses. Takes longer than getting a drip coffee from a perculator but it is worth the wait.
The decor was designed by talented Meat & Bread and Bao Bei designer Craig Stanghetta. Very original with great attention to practical details like the angling of the backs of the wood seating and the suspended tables. The windows behind the barista station are amazing. Big front windows also make sitting at the front a great place to watch the sometimes sordid action along the street.
Overall a can't miss if you are touring Gastown's favorite haunts.Listed in: Best Coffee & Tea Houses

There's so many different types of cafe experiences to be had here in Vancouver and @beandar is recommending that you make Revolver one of them!
My visit wasn't just about drinking coffee, it was more of an overall experience and an educational one at that. I'm a bit on the obsessed side of coffee (no, really?) So I asked a lot of questions because I felt these guys are somewhat of an authority on the subject. I was seriously impressed with their Informative, in depth knowledge about the coffees they serve, and on how they prepare them. So many fun implements!
The cafe is tight, and we were lucky to get a seat on such a busy day, in fact there was a line up which is something I've personally seldom seen on a weekend at a cafe. We sat in a booth with our out of town guest and enjoyed the ambiance. I had a great time. I love the interior and how everything is set up including the antique filing cabinet at the back which houses the sugars, spoons, and other accouterments. OMG
Looking around in there I couldn't help observing how much thought went into all the details that makes this a really unique coffee experience in Vancouver. There are 5 or 6 good cafes around Gastown that are worth checking out but seriously, don't miss Revolver. -
Review from Robin M.
Revolver's flirting with me.
They're caressing my coffee-loving tendencies with familiarities like the Chemex and Kone combination I have at home - though their sexy line-up of the handled version positioned 'just so' along the brew bar weakens the knees like my variant never could. They've wooed me with suspended bench seating, polished wood, brick walls, honeycomb tiles - my lips tremble at the thought of their brew options in this seductively minimalist space. Aeropress, siphon, Chemex, espresso - I can have their rotating daily blend brewed any way I want it. My heart flutters at the thought.
Revolver knows just the way I like it: they're focused, pure, done to order, done to perfection and size really doesn't matter - their brew is strong and clean. A girl like me doesn't need much more than that. Watch out Vancouver coffee, I may have taken in a new lover. -

I need to stop going places alone! Revolver is full of cute little booths, perfect for having a good chat/meeting/gossip over. I was in a rush so didn't even have time to stop and sit, but I will be back!
The friendly guy asked me what kind of beans I'd like in my latte. This was a first for me! He told me the names, but I needed more info than that ;) Ok, so one was fruity, go on. The other one was blah blah blah CHOCOLATE blah. Yup, that one! Course, I couldn't taste it, as it was heavily masked by milk. And what a lovely latte it was! I accidentally poured a bit on my hand, and stood there desperately licking it all up, like it was the last latte on earth. *Sigh*
I shall be back *ominous look*. -

I stopped by Revolver today with high hopes that this much-talked-about Gastown spot would be open, but alas, they open tomorrow morning at 7:30am! Throwing my hands up with uncaffeinated disappointment, I prepared to walk away, but luckily Chris of Revolver was standing outside and offered to make me a coffee. A free, carefully brewed coffee.
Ho-lee, Vancouver, but this was an experience. Not only is the coffee I'm drinking incredible - brewed in a stainless steel filter invented in Portland, dripping through weighed grounds into a glass carafe - but the space itself blew me away. Modern design techniques were used to infuse this old brick space with rustic yet contemporary charm. What does that mean? It means 15,000 nails hammered into the wall to make three world maps. It means hanging tables, polished wood, exposed brick, and natural light.
I'm excited to make this a regular stop.Listed in: Coffee & Tea, Exceptional Vancouver

This is the best coffee shop in Vancouver right now. Interior design is on point, the brothers that run the shop are super friendly, and the slow drip coffee is the best in town.

Gastown, your coffee's ready.
From the team behind the multi-roaster cafe Crema in West Van, comes Revolver. Proudly boasting no guns, the revolving coffees are sure to be a huge hit in this 'hood.
Not being married to a roaster means they'll be rotating espressos, and offering only the freshest in-season brewed coffees. Coffees have seasons, shocking, but true. Working away behind the scenes, the brothers that run Revolver have curated a beautiful space that's clean, welcoming and easy on the eyes.
If you aren't up to snuff on your coffee geography, grab a seat in a booth and check out the 15,000 nail (yes, as in hammer & nails) display on the wall, forming a world map, with coffee producing regions highlighted. Sure to start conversation with even the most boring of company.
A long brew bar reminiscent of a harvest style table fosters conversation as you order your coffee (whole bean sales as well) and move towards the back of the room, engaged in conversation and brewing process along the way. Take a journey at Revolver, experience coffees from Ritual Roasters in San Francisco, Phil & Sebastian in Calgary, Coava from Portland, and I even saw a Wrecking Ball bag kicking around, also from San Francisco. Ritual and Wrecking Ball are both owned by women, which is awesome to see being supported.
The newest coffee in town opens Friday Sept. 2nd after a friends & family party today, and is sure to be filled with Baristas, coffee geeks, and folks that just want a conversation with their brew. Add Revolver to your coffee crawl list in Vancouver, young passionate Entrepreneurs who in turn support the Roasters committed to good trade practices and excellent quality are always worth supporting.
