Besides the distaste that comes with the name of this place, first impressions of Meatmarket were pretty positive - Funny roadside animal collages and colourful chairs made the place feel pretty cozy.

A surly waitress showed up straight away with tasty tortilla chips and an olive tapenade that almost made us forget about her bad attitude. The menu she'd plopped down in front of us had a number of original and  appealing-sounding options like a duck-wing confit starter and a goat cheese and grilled zucchini-topped burger.

We started with the flank steak poutine. The fries were little on the mushy side, and the steak much tougher than it could have been.

The Asian garden salad with grilled tofu was the surprise success of this meal - Only slightly discerning that the vegetarian option at Meatmarket was better than the carnivorous one.

The food overall was decent, but nothing to write home about. Meatmarket has some good stuff going for it, but doesn't quite get it all right.

Meatmarket's got some great, homey atmosphere, but thankfully doesn't come with the ambiance its puntastic name suggests. I didn't have to use a steak knife to fend off cougars, entertaining though that might have been. It's a small place, so dining at the back bar is optimal, especially for noise control. The service was pretty good, if not a little overly anxious.

But let's get to the nitty-gritty here.....1980's sitcoms where incredibly poignant. It seemed as if every single one, from The Cosby Show, to Family Ties to Growing Pains all had an episode in which a certain teenager would learn the beautiful truth they should just be themselves, because when they try to be someone else, they find they're appealing to the wrong crowd, and it never works anyway.

I kinda feel that way about Meat Market's food.

Dinner companion and I each had the 5 brochette sampler, thinking it would be a great way to taste the carnivorous wares. And while the meat was good and expertly marinated, every last one came treading in a Heavy Sauce. Four out of five sauces were over-salted and mayo-based, as if we weren't smart enough to appreciate the taste of the carne itself. .   Ironically enough, the frites (which were perfect, crunchy, not greasy) didn't come with ketchup which is the one sauce it could have used. ummm...okay?

And because Montreal wouldn't be Montreal without a quirk,  I have to say the best thing I tasted the whole night was the salad. I have no idea what kind of  dressing (five spice? all spice?) was lovingly drizzled on those field greens but daaaaayuuuum.

Also regarding the meat: Consistency is key. One steak chunk can't be so raw it's blue while the other is nearly medium well. It makes me think you aren't paying attention.  And lastly, if you're gonna have a meat sampler on your menu, three out of five meat selections shouldn't be chicken. Do people even order chicken in a restaurant anymore? I thought we'd gotten past that. They don't even serve it at wedding receptions anymore.   I mean, you have a cow as your logo, Meat Market. A cow. Remember?

And though I'm not much on cocktails I feel like if you're a bartender, you should be able to make a martini. It's not exactly an obscure drink. And we were asked how to make one by one of the bartenders.

Meat Market: Get your act together.  Start by laying off the sauces. You're better than that. People will like you for who you are not who you think they want you to be. It worked for Kirk Cameron. It'll work for you.

Fantastic! We found this place by accident.
The menu mainly consists of sandwiches--I had the Asian: tofu, mushroom spread, with an onion marmalade; it was soooo good.
My boyfriend had the steak sandwich and it was also fantastic.
I like that all their sauces, dressings, and rubs are made in-house.
I'd definitely come back for another meal.

Another case of I love my friends too much and go to crappy restaurants for their birthdays review. I would have gladly spent the rest of my life not knowing what was inside the Meat Market, but alas, shit happens. The atmosphere made me uncomfortable, crowds of 20-somethings having overpriced drinks and steak before clubbing, loud music, sleek, uninviting design. For a meat market, the restaurant offers a surprising amount of vegetarian options.  I had Le Menage a Trois (edgy! not); grilled eggplant, roasted red peppers, zucchini, red pepper aioli (which I omitted) and mixed greens. Sides are a melange of regular and sweet potato fries and a mixed salad with balsamic vinegar. The sandwich is small, but tasty despite no aioli, the sweetness of the peppers really adds a kick though to be honest I kind of wanted to douse everything in balsamic vinegar to give it an extra something. For 8.95$, I'm not complaining, but the portions are a little ridiculous. The wine was utterly forgettable, a 2005 pinot noir, and the rest of the list was also uninspiring. As I paid my cheque, I noticed that they sell in-house dressing and spices and I can't help to be a tiny bit impressed. The atmosphere, and extremely slow service, with the ok but not remarkable food left me unmarked, something in limbo. Good to know there are vegetarian options if I ever do need to return, but it certainly won't be without an invitation.

the flank steak and accoutrements were absolutely delicious. the staff was incredibly servicing; we arrived around 9 pm on a friday w no reservations. they took down my boyfriend's number and said they'd call when a table opened up in about a half hour. and they did! the music and crowd are pretty suspect, but i would definitely recommend it.
