Review from Simon B.
Restaurant Bert, or Chez Bert, is a tiny dinner on Aberdeen slight north of downtown Sherbrooke. It's a favorite spot of locals, who seem to be crowding the place at most times of the day. It attempts to emulate small American diners: a bar with 4 stools stools for lone eaters, small crowded red tables, coca-cola memorabillia, Marylin Monroe pictures and some pictures of the owner and other locals. The table mats are colorful and have the breakfast menu on it, the mugs have advertisements for a local store. The locals chat with the cooks, with the waitresses, between each other, from all ends of the tiny dinner. Great atmosphere.
I was there with my sister. The waitress seemed annoyed that both of us would only share a poutine (I was also having coffee), which was surprising given that the place was rather empty when we got in. The poutine we ordered took a good 10 minutes to come, which seemed rather long.
In the end it comes down to food, and the wait was even more frustrating as the fries were just plain awful. You could tell right away that they had taken fries that had been left there and then put them back into the frier! As a result, some fries were full of oil and incredibly hard. I couldn't even put my fork through some of them. It was gross.
The cheese curds weren't fresh but at least it was the right kind (just thawed, I would guess), and the gravy was fine. It was actually dark and a little sweet. I liked it, but the fries were ruining everything. We couldn't finish the poutine.
I left dissapointed. The food was gross, and for a small poutine (hardly enough for one) and a coffee, I left with a $10 bill. It wasn't worth it, and I wouldn't go again. If they can make a decent poutine (let alone a good one) how could i trust them with anything else?
