I stayed here last weekend for my sister's bachelorette party. I reserved a block of rooms & the woman who helped me with my semi-complicated reservation was very helpful.
When I arrived the bellman let me know that meter parking is free on the weekends & that if I entered the parking garage across the street before ~5p it'd be free. Not only was it incredibly helpful, but it saved me the $16 valet fee.
The hotel has been renovated & it shows. It's very beautiful & has a lobby bar and restaurant. My room was fabulous & the guest rooms we had (not sure about the entire hotel) all had 2 bathrooms, which was great for 4 people to a room.
Nice robes, Aveda bath products, complimentary wifi.
The weather was horrid so I was pleased to find out the sky way on the 2nd floor connected to Court Ave Brewery so we didn't have to walk outside. It's about 2 blocks away from all the bars/restaurants on Court Ave.
I'd definitely recommend staying here. If you're a AAA member don't forget to ask for a discount!Listed in: 100 Review Challenge, Des Moines

I didn't actually pay for my stay so the price doesn't factor into my rating, but I thought this was a very nice hotel and would definitely recommend it to others.. The room itself wasn't huge but it was kept up-to-date despite it being a much older hotel. It's pretty centrally located in downtown Des Moines, so it's ideal for business travelers but also for people wanting to check out things in the city within walking distance. The lobby area is fairly small and not terribly fancy but was still fairly upscale considering where it's located.
If you're a light sleeper, you might be disturbed by the plumbing because you could certainly hear the pipes every time someone started the shower or flushed the toilet from another room, but it didn't bother me much. Free WiFi was nice, and since we stayed on the weekend I was actually able to park across the street at a metered spot for free! -

A close to perfect hotel room....we could have happily lived there! I have always liked the Savery for it's location, convenience, and local color. They are currently undergoing some renovations (they took out their signature lobby carpet), but there is no lessening of their relentless drive to deliver excellent service. This landmark hotel is within walking distance to the Court Avenue district, the Civic Center, and attached to the skywalk.
The parking garage across the street is ridiculously easy to access, once you decipher the Des Moines street system, which takes patience. Then you can roll your suitcases across and into the hotel. They have not yet managed to add a ramp into the hotel, so there are a couple of short steps to manage, but the doors are automatic.
The bar has fast, friendly service, and you can get hors d'oeuvres until midnight.
It was a great beginning for our adventure. -

This is a very unique hotel in a beautiful historic building. Incidentally, the building formerly housed service-women in the 1940s. Because it is an historic building, the room was on the small side and the bathroom was tiny, but functional. There is not a lot of counterspace for make up and other toiletries and the lighting the bathroom wasn't the best - but the light in the main room was fine for doing hair and applying make up. Next time I am in Des Moines on business, I will happily stay here again. The room service was reasonably priced and came within 25 minutes of ordering.
Overall, it is clean, well kept, good location and affordable - check it out if you are headed to Des Moines. -

Wow.
I've stayed in some nice hotels in Des Moines, but this place defeinitely tops my list as far as value goes. The room was spacious (ours had two bathrooms?!), the staff was incredibly helpful, and the bed was COMFY.
It's also close to EVERYTHING downtown, especially restaurants, concerts at Wells Fargo Arena, and Court Ave nightlife.
DEFINITELY recommend. -

This hotel is beautiful and every room is different. Some have kitchens, some even have two bathrooms. Wild! I believe it's been around since the early 1900's. Beds are comfortable, bathroom is small in some units, HUGE in others. I went to another cast room's room and you could dance in her shower with 3 other people it was so huge!!
Downfall? For some weird reason my allergies act up here. I've been touring the nation and some hotels make it work for me and some don't. Unfortunately when I saw a black hair in my tub (my hair is blonde), I realized it may not be as clean as I thought. What if I had one of those awesome black lights..... I actually wouldn't want to see until I leave.
Great customer service. Great pool and work out area. Just beware if you have bad sinuses.
Beyond everything I would stay here due to location in the heart of downtown. Walking distance to everything. -

One of the nicest hotel rooms I have every had - hands down!
Big spacious clean suite with kitchen, great view, sofa, chairs, king-size bed, good cable tv, super friendly staff, etc. Awesome!
And the breakfast buffet for $11 was outstanding - without question, the BEST BACON I HAVE EVER EATEN!
Those Iowans really know their pig parts! -
Review from Reed N.
Great facilities and decent rooms are pulled down by loud radiators and mediocre hospitality at the front desk [old schoolmarms asking for work IDs and nonsense].
I probably would not stay here again due to the front desk... even though my company has a killer rate here. -

I have found myself in Des Moines twice in the past six months - both times we decided to stay at the Renaissance. It's right downtown, there is free parking in the lot across the street on weekends, and it is a historical landmark property - very beautiful hotel. The layout is pretty wonky, however. Some rooms are huge, some are just strangely shaped. Just depends on what you get, I guess.
It's great and all, but what's with no fans in the bathrooms? Update that shit. -

Outside of airplanes and trains this room has the smallest bathroom I have ever seen. But, the room is great, with a comfy bed. The hotel is pretty fancy for my taste but we got an excellent price and the FREE VALET PARKING for Prius owners wowed me even more than the free wifi. I like it here!

Historic and very nice hotel. We stayed on a 4th of July weekend and had a great time. Exceptional service. Its worth the jog off the main highway.

The Savery is a very nice mid-range hotel in downtown Des Moines. The hotel is centrally located to all the major spots in the city. The hotel is an historic property so the rooms lack equity in size and amenities. I've stayed here several times and have gotten very large rooms as well as somewhat smaller ones. The front desk staff is great and are very accommodating if you request a specific type of room. Next to the Embassy Suites, this is my favorite hotel in Iowa.

First time I have stayed in a hotel room that had 2 bathrooms. Quite strange and quite old. The room was clean and the cleaning staff does a good job. The hotel hallways smell slightly musty and have strange carpet. Its a hotel, don't expect anything extraordinary. The bar was a nice place to hangout and have a drink. Oh yes, and the phone didnt work in my room.

Very nice hotel and recently renovated. Looks great on the inside and the rooms are cleanly done. My room was very nice. Almost wasted space in the design of the room. See the pics I posted. Parking is right across the street and costs ~$11 per weekday, Saturday and Sunday are free.
