Review from Ben B.
So I don't come to Renaissance often, nor is it ever really on my mind, but when I do need a Renaissance run? It's always a successful trip.
What does it mean to NEED to go to Renaissance? Well, the educated Halifax shopper will be quick to tell you that this quirky shop on Barrington Street is jam-packed with incredible special edition Converse sneaks. From just about every colour of the rainbow, to graffiti and cartoons, there's a Chuck Taylor for everyone on the top floor. They have great clear-out sales right before a new shipment too so keep an eye out. Go, buy and get ready to kick it.
What else have they got on lock? Men's PJ pants. I know, it seems silly to say, but their selection of vertical striped Calvin Klein's is beyond compare. And lemme tell you, there's nothing quite like slipping into some Calvins first thing in the morning (and then wearing them all day if you're a lazy bum who has a home office like a certain community manager I know...).
I mean, I totally wear real-person pants all day. Just don't stop by unannounced.Listed in: Stylin'

The few times I frequented Renaissance it was because of something in the window that drew me in. After being in there, there was nothing that really wowed me.
They do have a decent selection of cloths but nothing that I would send someone down to.
However , if you are a walker and find it hard to get to other locations, this might be a good stop for you and they do carry a selection of sneakers, especially if you are a converse buff.
Nothing in here is cheap, but again, when shopping downtown Halifax, not much is. -

In a sense, this store is a bit of a one trick pony. Renaissance continues to lure people in with its colorful window display of Chuck Tailors. The display alters from front window to side window and back again. Rearranged, reshuffled, redone- no matter what way you say it, its the same thing! Its been a few years now, and Chuck Tailors seems to have taken on a role of Old Faithful.
Furthermore, this display is somewhat misleading to the sort of merchandise one may expect from this shop. With such funky colors of a somewhat hipsterish-ish shoe, I thought I'd see more of an edgy, streetwear style. But its actually quite the opposite with formal and conservative clothing to suit both men and women.
Its not bad. Just not what I was expecting. A little bit misleading perhaps? Renaissance houses some top quality threads, but nothing that really beckoned my need. -

Renaissance Clothing Company sells a pretty wide range of product, for a pretty wide age range as well. A large majority of the clothing at this shop is priced at and geared towards those looking for a casual professional look.
As one of the only (and certainly the largest) retail outlets selling Converse sneakers in the HRM, be sure to head to the second floor! Head in often if there's a particular style you're set on, since Renaissance sells out quickly. -

I have a vice. It's not nicotine, it's not alcohol, it's Converse Special Edition Chuck Taylor's. Call me a hipster, I dare you...
Converse can be a very frustraiting company to deal with, mostly because they don't ship outside the USA, which is a ridiculous policy. Because of this it's nice to have a store like Renaissance Clothing on hand.
They are an official Converse dealer and can make special orders. This means that I can finally get my white leather Chuck's, no thanks to Converse, all thanks to Renaissance!
I will be completely honest, the rest of this store does not interest me at all, I rarely even pay it a second look. I simply head for the second floor and check out the shoes, which is what you should do to.
Thanks for the shoes Renaissance, and thanks for dealing with Converse. -

I had initially walked into this store because of the grand display of Converse shoes in one of the windows. I figured this would be a somewhat alternative store with different styles and clothes. I was kind of wrong.
There was actually a pretty odd selection of women's clothes. I saw some things that I would consider wearing, but other things that I didn't even glance at a second time. It seemed like a combination of business and casual clothes, but none that I really liked.
Most of the clothes were extremely overpriced. There was one tank top for $79. A tank top! Other items were just as bad, and I saw nothing under $50. It was a little too overpriced for me, especially since it didn't quite seem like haut couture. Actually, there was something in this place I could afford. There was a random card rack placed in amongst the clothes and I think I could probably pick something off that rack for under $10... hopefully.
Needless to say, I didn't get to look at the Converse because they were all hidden in the window behind mounds of clothes, and I got sick of having my every move watched by one of the clerks. I high-tailed it out of there with nothing to show for my trip... not even a feel of the shoes I originally went in for. -

Renaissance brings the heat when it comes to creating tempting window displays, but when you get up close and personal, you realize the the window dressings don't convey what's actually in store.
I spotted a cute floral dress, and a few simple pieces while visiting today, but in total it was all relatively blah. Laura pinned the tail on the donkey when she said that Chuck Tailors are put on a pedestal at this downtown shop. They must pull in quite a bit of business because they're always the center of attention week in and week out.
Renaissance are the paradigm purveyor when it comes to Converse in this city. They'll make special orders and be sure to get your feet outfitted accordingly in the style of your choice when it comes to these time honoured sneaks.
I wasn't taken with Renaissance, but I also wasn't offended by it. I'm sure securing a piece or two is totally possible if you frequent this downtown shop! Happy trails.
