Review from Ben B.
Surprisingly, I'm quite alright with the Red Stag! I say surprisingly because most 'east coast pubs' fail to get this east-coaster excited enough to look beyond the typical vibe we usher out to impress the tourists as they flock to cheap beer and drinking songs.
Despite being in the heart of the beast (close to the water, on the main drag for cruise passenger pedestrians, and attached to the original Alexander Keith's brewery), the Red Stag has managed to keep its cool and, more importantly, its good service.
Whether you're soaking up the sun on the killer rooftop patio, or splitting pitchers with friends after sundown, the Red Stag has a vibe that keeps on giving, a menu that satisfies as far as pub grub is concerned, and staff that you're actually happy to see. -

One of my favourite restaurants in this city!
A little hidden gem in the Keith's Brewery, The fish and chips are delicious.
The onion rings and dip are to die for!
I usually try to go on the healthy side and order the grilled chicken panini with herb and garlic cream cheese and a side garden salad!
The panini is soooo good, the hint of cream cheese just makes it out of this world!
The salad is flavour full and the dressing is light and oil vinegar based superb!
Never had a bad experience, everything I've tried is fantastic and the atmosphere is great! The waiters also have always had great beer recommendations to go along with our meals! -

Very unique place, very friendly service, nice tasty beer and large menu of different fresh food. What else to wish from a bar!
Try their lobster chowder! (But be aware - it is a huge portion. :) ) It has all types of seafood: lobster, shrimp, scallops, fish. It is creamy, right consistency and with solid but well-done pieces of potato and the right amount of celery. And with fresh beer... mmmm... SUPERB! -

I believe I've become the Duchess of this joint only because it's a regular lunch spot with work folks. This place is a whole lot of meh for me (not enough to give it the two star "meh" though), but that could be because I'm not generally a pub person. Food I've had thus far is good, but not outstanding. I've enjoyed the veggie burger and the onion rings - neither is the best I've ever had, but they're not bad either. The quesadilla is okay, although a little heavy on the banana pepper.
It's a decent lunch spot, with a great patio and friendly staff. Inside is a bit on the dark and loud side, but not enough that I'd avoid it.
Overall, it's okay and that's okay by me.Listed in: 30 Days of Yelping, Pub Grub

After walking the boardwalk and swerving through people at the Buskers Festival whilst walking back to the car we were passing the Stag and exclaimed, "let's grab a beer!". So we did. The Red Stag is located inside Keith's Brewery and of course, everything has the stag on it. Even the BRAND NEW BREWTENDERS!!! These Brewtender's hold 6 pints which is equilvalent to 96 oz which is bigger than the other Brewtenders in this fine city. You do need a credit card to get a Brewtender, this is to ensure that they are not stolen. Which lets face it, probably would happen and if you do steal it that's a $250 purchase on your credit card!
We didn't eat here last night, but I have in the past and enjoyed my meal.
Service was fantastic, our server engaged with us which we really appreciated!
PS: I do in fact think that Brewtender does deserve a capital letter -

I went her a few days ago to meet a few friends who were not from Halifax. They had been wander the city for a few hours and found their way to the patio of the Red Stag.
We sat here with the after work crowd, roasting in the sun with a few drinks and some food.
The patio is great. Large, but was not too crowded (i.e., the tables are nicely spread). The only downfall is that at one point in the evening the sun went behind the bell tower and ruined our sun-bathing. When this happened the patio got quit cold.
Drinks were okay (the standard for me, a non-beer drinker). Appetizers were tasty (haddock tips and calamari), but a little small for the price. Appetizers now-a-days are more expensive, and meant for sharing (remember the days when they were 2-3$ and for one person). We were able to share, but I would have expected a little more (especially with the Haddock tips).
I'd go back again for the patio, but not for the food. -

It's about that time again. The time when Haligonians young and old flock to the patios of downtown Halifax to enjoy a burger or beer (or ideally both) in the sun. The challenge is finding a restaurant that provides ample patio real estate. Well, good news - I recently discovered that the Red Stag has a roof-top patio, and it's actually quite a good one. Although the view of the harbor is semi-blocked by Bishop's Landing, you still get the sea breeze and that 'on the waterfront' feel. They have recently revamped their menu, so in addition the patio-perks, there are plenty of tasty meal offerings, and a great beer selection.
On a recent visit there, I opted for the 'Italian Chicken Sandwich' and a salad. It was nothing particularly crazy or fancy, just a good chicken sandwich. My dining partner went for the 'South Ender Burger', and when it arrived I was immediately stricken with intense food envy - topped with arugula, goat cheese, roasted tomatoes, and a garlic basil sauce it didn't do my breath any favours, but it was so delicious. Most of the sandwiches and burgers are in the $10-$13 range, with entrees being more in the $16-$20, so you probably won't break the bank there. And if it's a nice day and you can snag a seat on the patio, the Red Stag should certainly provide you with a positive dining experience.Listed in: South End Eats

My husband and I were downtwon on an errand and decided to have an early lunch. We strolled in only to be told that the tavern was not open for another 15 minutes. We killed some time and came back. We both had fish and chips - the portions were huge. The fish was a little under cook. The waitress was really freindly but as the lunch crowd grew she was spread too thin amonst all the tables which made me glad that we came early. Had their cheesecake after - good but not the best I have. All in all a good meal for the price. The only thing negative I could say would be to the bar tender - it wouldn't have killed you to let us just and stay!

Review from Sue A.
Located in the old Alexander Keith's Brewery market, the Red Stag is pretty much a replica of a circa 1820 tavern. With its granite walls, you'll feel as if you were sitting in an Alexander Keith's beer ad. (Who is this Alexander Keith? He emigrated from Scotland, set up Nova Scotia's first brewery and brewed great beers that live on today.) That being said, the place is brightly lit, very clean and has lots of seating. It's a great place for large groups.
I visited on a Friday night with a group of friends and experienced the longest happy hour of my life. Upon our arrival at 6pm, I ordered a small draught only to be told I should get a large as it was the same price. This was the case until 10pm, resulting in many happy hours for me.
When it comes to beer, lots of special ales are available on tap. Of course many of them are Keith's ales, but you can also get other well-known draughts such as Stella and Boddingtons.
The food menu was a bit perplexing. While it had many, many items, none of them seemed particularly appealing so I went with an old standard: chicken nachos. Topped with banana peppers and caramelized onions in addition to the regular toppings and doused with the mysterious ingredient of basil oil, these were the best nachos I had had in a long time.
Local musician Corey Tetford provided live music that evening. He's a great guitar player and sang lots of great songs to be sociable by. Think Tom Petty, Van Morrison and the Beatles.
With its warm atmosphere and reasonable prices, the Red Stag is a fun place to spend an evening with a group of friends. -

People here are nutty over Alexander Keith's. Big-time nutty. I attended the birthday celebration bash on the waterfront last week, and things got crazy. The overwhelming enthusiasm for the brew is reflected all over the city, including with the brewery tour.
The tour is "theatrical," meaning employees dress up in 19th century apparel, and they're under STRICT rules to never stray from their roles. You can't even whip out your cell phone without someone commenting on your newfangled technology.
The tour is a lot of fun and the guides are great. Sometimes I felt a little awkward and didn't really know how to react to such exuberance, especially when someone's singing in your face. But as far as brewery tours go, this one is incredibly unique. You'll even get wooed through song and dance while enjoying two pints of whichever ale you prefer, and the whole thing ends with a thrilling game of poker. (I have no idea how to play poker, of course, and was ridiculed.) The building is set up to replicate the old-style brewery and even features furniture from Mr. Keith's house.
Tip? Don't do the tour on an empty stomach. I was reeling by the time I left. -
Review from Hilary G.
We were starving and this tavern isn't far from the Westin. We skipped the brewery tour and just opted for lunch indoors and were impressed by the decor. However, service is sorely lacking and our waitress didn't come by until 10 minutes or more after we were seated (and they weren't very busy). We actually went to the bar to get our beers. Sadly, we tried 4 different beers and none were much good - the IPA in particular had no traditional hoppy flavor. What saved the rating? The food. We tried the lobster tomato dip which was quite good and the haddock fish and chips were among the best I have had (I think they are known for having some of the best fish and chips in Halifax). The beer batter and freshness of the fish is stellar.

Oh Keith. How I love the!
Keith's beer is probably the most iconic beer in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After all, Halifax was the place where Alexander Keith invented his infamous beer. I don't know what it tasted like in 1820, but it definitely is one of my favorite beer's to date! And not because I am a loyal Haligonian (the name we give ourselves if we live in Halifax). I don't support anything just because it comes from Halifax. It still has to meet my ridiculous standards. And I have had beer from around the world. But Alexander Keith's beer definitely meets my standards.
So if you are unfamiliar with this incredible beer, go on the Keith's Brewery Tour. I promise you will have a good time. They have hired Actors who take you back in time to the early age of Alexander's Keith Brewery. They tell you how they make their beer, without giving away the secret ingredient and teach you the history about Alexander Keith along with a general history of Halifax. On the tour expect, games, singing and a really well done, high quality video presentation about Alexander Keith's Brewery. But don't worry. They won't leave you "high and dry." You will get some great, complimentary beer during your tour as well.
I can't say too many bad things about Alexander Keith's beer or their brewery tour. One thing would be the promise that we will meet Mr. Alexander Keith himself. The Actors promise that we will meet Mr. Keith at some point in the tour. But at no point do they actually introduce us to another Actor playing Mr. Keith or do they explain why he never showed up. Confusing. I'd suggest a small rewrite in the script or hire me to play Mr. Keith. I promise I'd do a great job!
The Actors do an amazing job and work around the clock performing 24/7. I am an Actor and can't imagine working for those many hours, tour after tour and still smiling while staying in character. So whatever they are getting paid, double it please.
Alexander Keith's is a really easy beer and brewery tour to write about. They have kept the quality of the tour consistently good and entertaining for years. Their beer has also never lost its flavor. So I am pleased to give this Brewery Tour and Beer the four out of five stars it rightfully deserves.1 Previous Review: Show all »

We spent 4 nights in Halifax on our last trip and had a blast. I've been on several brewery tours from Anheuser Busch in St. Louis to Guiness in Dublin and many in between. The tour here at Alexander Keith's was very fun. All the presenters were dressed up in 1800s style outfits and played around with the crowd. This tour wasn't one of those blah blah blah hops and barley kind of tours... closer to a small show with very energetic actors and actresses.
Keith's is some of my favorite beer around... so smooth and drinkable. My only knock was the rush to get out of the free drinking area. The barkeep went on about how you should take your time and enjoy yourself and sang a song, then... bam finish your drink and move along. I understand that they have to keep it going, but another 10 minutes would allow everyone to try a second or third flavor. -

Those who love a good tavern will enjoy their time at the Red Stag. Classic Maritime hospitality awaits with its mid-evil era aesthetic of stone walls, high ceilings and rustic wood furnishings. Its all quite tasteful and inviting, as a relaxed and friendly atmosphere ensues.
You can count on lots of beer on tap. Classic and well composed pub food to boot! The Red Stag seems like a a fantastic spot to kick back and relax amongst friends.
The crowd seems to range from young college students to tourists to older folk. It really just depends on the night. Whatever the case, the staff maintains a good time for all, and I'd recommend this waterfront location for those looking for the classic Maritime time. -

We did the brewery tour next door and wanted to relax a bit.
We made our way to the rooftop patio and let me tell you, it was really a great afternoon.
It was a weekday, so the crowd was kind of thin, but the views are nice.... and the weather was perfect. A great place to relax and enjoy a cold one.....
We tried the chicken nachos and they were tasty.... great pub food.
If I lived in the area, I could see this being a regular place of mine... The hot Canadian chicks in the short skirts were a pleasant surprise too!Listed in: Beer Me

Alexander Keith, the man, the relic, the icon.
There really isn't much you can say about this brewery and beer that isn't good! Especially not the original, India Pale Ale.
I highly recommend taking any friends/relatives that come into town down for the Keith's brewery tour. Both locals and visitors are pretty much guaranteed to enjoy! And if historical tidbits aren't your thing, then look forward to the 2 mugs of beer you're about to be served. Prepare to throw it back though. No sipping at Keith's.
Couple things to note about Alexander Keith's. 1) Those from Atlantic Canada call it 'Keith's'. You'll brand yourself as someone 'from away' if you go to a pub in Halifax and ask for "one alexander keith's please'. :) 2) Keith's has just begun to be brewed outside of Nova Scotia... heresy to some I know. My boyfriend drinks Keith's almost exclusively and he notices the difference in taste between Keith's purchased in BC and Keith's purchased in NS.
Keith's is in the midst of expanding their brand. You can now purchase: The Premium White, Red Amber Ale, Stag's Head Stout and Keith's Lite. Whether or not you'll enjoy these new varieties is a subjective matter but the success of the original alone should at least encourage you to try them! -

As a Nova Scotian by birth and a long time Haligonian, I thought it might finally be time to check out the historical Alexander Keith's Brewery. I remember turning 19 and joking with my friends that it would be a perfect place to celebrate, but over time the novelty wore off and I had never made it on a tour.
I ended up dragging a few friends from Alberta along with me a few weeks ago, and finally walking through the front doors I could smell the oat smell (is that hops?) of Keith's India Pale Ale. We were led around the brewery for about an hour and left with a few mugs of beer at the end to enjoy. While I could see that my friends had enjoyed themselves, I was nearly jumping out of my skin with excitement. It was the equivalent of a tour around Santa's Workshop for me, and it didn't disappoint. It's a chance to drink beer that doubles as an educational experience, what's not exciting about that?
I recommend checking the Brewery tour out during the summer, when it commences every half hour during the lengthened summer hours (Monday-Saturday from 12-8pm and Sunday 12-5pm). Rates and hours are posted on the website, make sure you bring a group and cash in on the discounted group rate!
Hot Hint: People of all ages can go on the tour; there are other beverage options for minors. Bring your ID if you plan to drink. -
Review from Lacey H.
Oh golly, Alexander Keith's - you've really locked Nova Scotia down as a merry old time, filled with wenches and plaid adorned mustached men. I'm not a huge fan of ye old Keith's - I find it nondescript and fairly inoffensive, but that's a sidebar to this funny little tour that transpires at the brewery market.
I've been on the tour a couple of times, and enjoyed myself on both occasions. It's pretty easy to judge and be standoffish when silliness in transpiring, but if you let go and give in then you're bound to have a few chuckles.
The acting is generally pretty great, with local talent subsidizing their aspiring careers with gigs at the brewery. It's not super expensive to take the tour and I believe it's still free on your birthday - which can be a great way to kick of your special celebration.
It's fun to head through the underbelly of the market, sussing out the old brewing grounds and the subterranean cellars. You get a couple of complimentary bevies on the tour, but make sure to bring your identification so you don't get stuck drinking juice.
There's music and little vignettes, as well as some fun patron-staff interactions that take place. I recommend this as a good larf for locals and visitors alike. If nothing else, it's fun to learn a little and laugh at the same time! -

You have to give a five star to the Oldest Brewery in Town, since 1820.
Keiths has been part of my life as well as others for a long time. If you ever go to a party, if you are not drinking it , someone else is.
Keiths Brewery Tour is a fun place to take your guests or if you have not been yourself. It will give some history as well as entertainment.
The costumes are superb. The actors are great, and having a fun time
throughout the summer.
And of course the best part of the tour. The refreshments afterwards.
You get two nice cold brews, if you are not of age or wish to have alcohol, you will get juice etc.
This is a great way to start off an evening. -

The Red Stag certainly has locale going for it. Deep within the Brewery Market, the space takes advantage of the heritage stonework thing that the whole building has going on. It's a crowd-friendly pub and has a nice rooftop patio where, if you get the right table, you can have a bit of a harbour view. Staff are young and friendly. The food is pretty decent pub fare: burgers, seafood, pastas with some pretensions toward the gourmet side - but prices are a bit high to keep the university crowd coming back.
