One of my truly favourite restaurants here in Vancouver.

The Ginger beef is to die for, also try the coconut rice.

Kam's closed after being on Davie for years but the new incarnation is now on West Broadway, serving much of the same fare that was at the downtown location. Although I'd only read about the old location, I was excited to try this place.

Let me first apologize for the overly yellow tones on all the food photos. The Torch has a horrendous flash, so despite what you see here, I didn't have curry everything! The first thing we got were the Spring Rolls - these are filled with vegetables and vermicelli and served with a slightly sweet plum sauce. Flaky skin, piping hot filling, it's exactly what a spring roll should be. Get some hot chilli sauce on the side for an additional punch of heat.

Another go-to dish is their Lettuce Wrap which we got with beef, but you can also get it with chicken. Mixed in with a lot of diced veggies, this dish almost feels healthy.  The hoisin sauce is a good addition and serves to hold the diced filling together. Everyone has their own way of rolling a lettuce wrap, but one thing to remember...less is more. Don't overfill it and you'll be fine.

Next up was the Green beans with Spicy Chicken. Green beans are great, richly flavoured and just a bit spicy. But I didn't enjoy the shape of the chicken. It made serving the dish quite awkward...long green beans and chunks of chicken, I think I would have preferred chicken strips instead of chicken chunks. But alas, that's a purely presentation criticism...the tastes are all there.

The last dish we got to round out dinner was the House Special Chilli Beef. Large beef slices tossed with even larger slices of peppers, onions and zucchini. Again, as with the Beans & Chicken, I didn't like the presentation even though I liked the flavours. I don't enjoy rough cut vegetables, and that was what ruined the dish for me. The peppery sauce was good, and great to mix with the rice we got on the side.

Since we had so many saucy dishes...we needed something carbs to soak up all the sauces. We got an order of their Coconut Rice, and I fell in love with the presentation. instead of a rounded bowl as expected, the fragrant rice was served in a banana leaf envelope. Gorgeous and tasty.

One dish we really didn't need was the Pad Thai. It's a gigantic portion of noodles, bean sprouts, shrimp with a topping of scrambled egg and peanuts. The sauce was actually really good, although I don't know if it's authentic. To serve this, toss everything together (yes, it can get messy) and get a bit of crunch from the peanuts and sprouts to go with the tender noodles and egg.

I think this is my favourite restaurant in Vancouver. I loved it when it was Kam's Place on Davie, and I still love it now. Here's why:

    1. The food, a mixture of Thai, Chinese and Singaporean, is delicious. I could eat every item on the menu. Get the lettuce wrap, it's in the appetizer section but it's as big as a main course.

    2. The price is right. Pretty much everything on the menu is $9.95, except for most seafood dishes, which are $11.95, and some vegetarian dishes that are $8.95. Did I mention there's a vegetarian section? Also, the portions are big. I usually take home leftovers. And there is often (always?) a coupon in the Georgia Straight, it's worth clipping it out. Considering the food is delicious (see point 1), this is a bargain.

    3. The people who run the place are the nicest people in the universe. Kam will likely be at the door to seat you himself. While I was there, someone came in to get take out, but wasn't sure what he wanted to order. Kam asked him a couple of questions and they kind of made up a dish on the spot together. No problem.

Good to see that nothing has changed. The new location looks just like the old one, same menu, same food, same people... slightly farther from my house, but hey, I guess I can always move.

An eating 'entertaining' experience, the triple E's is what you are getting here. I got to know Kam way back when he opened his restaurant on Davie called's 'Kam's Place'. Even back then, which I remember taking a coupon from the Georgia Straight, and going in there just to experience the food, it was always a warm welcome from a happy gentleman, who knew I would get to know the guy who constantly cracks jokes, knows multiple languages, and makes you always feel welcomed, if it is your first time, or your 10+ time, he is one of the reasons why I keep coming back. When my mom told me he opened this place up, we went, and usually come every so often (maybe once a month). Kam now jokes to me when we don't come in for a long time, "where have you been, have you been starving yourself!"

The menu is practically identical to that of his last restaurant "Kam's Place". The only thing I see that is missing is the Laksa, but every other thing is on the menu. Seperated in the form of appetizers, soups, chicken, pork, beef, vegetables, seafood, etc, there is quite a selection here!

One of the dishes that I always order, that fills me, is the curry (nasi-goreng) rice. The dish is plentiful in size, and a delight to eat. Ask for the in-house chili sauce they have and mix it with the rice, adds a good zing due to it's sweet and spicy nature. Other orders I have tried, and usually come back for are the lettuce wrap (your choice of meat), the spicy green beans and pork/beef are good too. The sizes for the portions are pretty big, bring your stomach. As Kam says, this is an affordable family restaurant, and at the same time it is a comfortable place with some decor that comes from his own house.

The staff he has with him has followed him from his old restaurant, and also gives great service to everyone sitting in to eat. I can't ever recall a bad time here, just good laughs with Kam, who always thinks up new things to say and sometimes you can get him to use his many Asian language skills. It's a place I would recommend, not just because it is a deal (and a steal) on the portions of food given, especially in this part of town, but because they are good people who enjoy what they do, and provide that service that sometimes is just lacking or missing from other places. Next time, think of coming in, and you will be pleasantly surprised.

On a side note, check out the interesting drawings going toward the washroom!

Had an excellent family dinner here a few weeks back. We showed up without reservations and they were able to seat 6 of us right away. We were the only table in the restaurant for a while, but it didn't take long for the place to fill up! That didn't hinder our amazing waiter and waitress who were super friendly and gave us quick service. The food was delicious, everyone ordered one main dish and we sampled buffet style. I was restricted to the veggie pad thai (only because I didn't want to order multiple things all for myself) but it was very tasty.

The decor was elegant, the prices were very fair and the food was excellent. I'll definitely come back when I'm in the area. Oh and I love the manager, he kept making jokes with us and was really approachable.

Stopped by here because another nearby restaurant we intended to go to was closed. Must say Red Ginger is pretty good. The place looked pretty full and there were people waiting by the door. After a minute or so, we were greeted by the owner, Kam, who apologized for the wait and said we would only be standing around for about 5 minutes. Somewhere between checking on tables and going back and forth, he kept on checking the front every minute or so but I think we waited for almost 10 minutes - I didn't really notice so that's a good thing.

We ordered the sweet basil vegetable prawns, Singapore beehon (rice vermicelli noodles), deep fried tofu with hoi sin sauce, and steamed coconut rice. The sweet basil prawns were indeed infused with sweet basil. The Singapore noodles were not bad but I've had them better elsewhere. The deep fried tofu and steamed coconut rice were delicious. There were indications of spiciness next to the dishes on the menu but I think the one chill isn't that spicy. Just a little kick to keep one alert.

Service is wonderful here. Water is always topped up, the servers make sure everything is going okay. Aside from Kam, our server also had a sense of humour. Prices are moderate too and the amount we got for the price we paid was reasonable. I'd go here again.

For anyone wondering about free parking, I'm not sure if there is any at the back of the restaurant but since it's the Broadway area, there is a lot of metered street parking.

This place is unreal.  The pricing is low to moderate and when you go with three or more people it is great to get plates and share.

We got red curry chicken, ginger beef and singaporean noodles to name a few dishes.  Each one had good cuts of meat and tasted fresh and from scratch.  I cannot stress enough how good this food is. Honestly I could eat red curry chicken from here every day.

The service is also impeccable.  The owner is hilarious and an amazing host.  He brought our table free dessert and I saw him bring a couple other tables a small gift.

    Will be back!!!

KAM! I'm so glad you're back. You have fixed my craving for ginger pork. The new space is bigger and brighter than before, but it still retains much of the charm of the old West End locale. Beckoning you to sit in an oversized bamboo chair, posing with the Terracotta Army, admiring an orchid perched beautifully inside a vase on the front tables, they are all still there. It's almost like the old world met the new world somewhere between the Gaybourhood and Fairview Slopes.

Dining with my dad (who for the past 6 months has been begging me to take him to Kam's) Kam filled us in on the large tapestry rich kimono adorning the wall. It had been locked away in storage for ten years. Ten years?! So happy it gets to see the light of day.

And the food? My dad and I ate like kings: vegetables with peanut sauce, coconut rice, spicy long bean and chicken, and of course, the aforementioned ginger pork. There was so much food left over that both Peter S and I had enough for huge lunches the next day. And of course, the warm hospitality still carries on - on my way out the door I was given a tea mug wrapped in a ladybug cello.

I would travel far and wide, even without a coupon, for my fave eats! Glad you're back!

Kam (the owner) and Tess provide wonderful service, and both the quality and quantity of food served continues to impress. As others have written, most menu items priced under $10, made even less expensive by the 2-for-1 coupon that can be found each week in the Georgia Straight. Personal favourite menu items include Sha Cha Chicken, Mixed Vegetables with Chili Sauce, the always scrumptious Pad Thai, the Orange Chicken. Fast, efficient service, pleasant atmosphere, great service, warming, nutritious food, great value for the money, all serve to make Red Ginger a wonderful and welcoming dining experience.

Dined here for the first time since opening. We used to be regulars at Kams place when Kam himself was still operating it. As soon as we walked into Red ginger he still knew who we were and the same friendly waitresses from Kams Place are there still too.

the Menu is the same as it was at Kams place. The food at Red ginger actually tastes better than it did at Kams Place. The way it used to be before Kams place went downhill.

The interior is done up very nicely and has that nice new feel.

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone lookking for good tasty food at a good value.

Pretty simple dishes. Not the best quality products. But lovely, friendly staff so that's always nice!!!  Apparently the owners have quite a loyal fan base from their previous restaurant set up on Davie Street, downtown Vancouver.

I had the Pad Thai, and it tasted like the kind of Pad Thai that you would get from a mall food court (which means ick!).  The chili chicken was not that good either.  Tasty sauce that covered strange, chewy chicken cubes.  (I guess I am used to my meat looking like meat).

Great ambiance and love the renovations to the building though.  I will probably give it a year and try it again.  :)

We were so excited to find out that Kam was opening his new place on our side of the bridge. From what I can tell, the menu is the same as Kam's Place on Davie. Our favorites are the Ginger Beef and the Kai Pad. I also really enjoy the Spring Rolls and Coconut Rice.

We've ordered from Red Ginger twice, and the quality is as good, if not better than, Kam's on Davie. Generally we prefer takeout over dining in, but the service is great either way. I highly recommend stopping by whether you were a fan of Kam's on Davie or if you're just curious about trying it for the first time.

I was a regular at Kam's place for years before he moved to Red Ginger.

The food is just as good as it was at Kam's, maybe better. Where Red Ginger really shines is in the lunch specials! I like to show up for lunch with a big container and take half home/to work for dinner. My top dishes:
    -green curry chicken
    -mixed vegetables
    -ginger chicken

The service is top notch. Water glasses never go empty. You never have to flag anyone down because they are so attentive. Kam, the owner, will actually come over and chat with you.

The new place is clean and nicely decorated. I'm so glad Kam's back!

$5.95 lunch specials are cheap, yummy and vegetarian friendly. I often get their vegetarian green curry - ready in under 10 minutes.  The best part is that they stuff so much in the to-go container I often have leftovers for an after-work snack or small dinner.

I love this place.  The food is delicious - my favourite by far is the Ginger Beef.  We have tried other dishes too but Ginger Beef is hands down the best I think.  Kam and the servers are fantastic and always remember us.  Portions are huge, yummy and with the coupon we are fed for $10 each.  One of my favourite restaurants in Vancouver, if not my favourite!  Thank you Kam :)

    I love Red Ginger.

I often ask if we can go there when we want to go out, but it's a little out of the way for us (over the bridge and down the hill).

I've eaten there once the owner (Kam? or Cam?) is so nice/friendly/generous.  You go there and he treats you like you always go there.

Mostly we get it for take out, and always Kam is very nice.

The food is good, it tastes delicious and is alaways what you order.

Really you can't go wrong in going to this place.

Catsup doesn't belong in Asian food, this may be comfort food for some but it is very disappointing for me. The people and space earn the 2 stars, sorry the dishes we has were bland (and 1 was a 2 chilli dish) and loaded with catsup.
