I must say, I am a HUGE fan of Red Barn coffee. I am an even bigger fan of their muffins. Holy goodness batman. I have no idea how they make such delicious muffins but I will try to describe them.

Now, don't go thinking that these are Dunkin' Donut style muffins. No way. These are just muffin tops. Ginormous muffin tops of heavenly goodness. Today I ordered the Glorious Morning muffin and indeed it was glorious. It melted in my mouth and I was a little sad when I finished it. Then I realized I still had a large French Vanilla coffee waiting for me. Mmmmm it hit the spot.

As I finished my coffee I sat at a small wooden table inside of Faneuil Hall and watched the many Red Sox and Celtics fans walk by as they shopped for trinkity items in Faneuil Hall.

A must try when you are in Boston.

Red Barn's coffee is simply the best in Boston. I wouldn't dare make such a lofty pronouncement if it wasn't true.

It depresses me that so many people worship the 'Bucks without acknowledging the over-roasted, burnt-ass flavor of the beans. The 'Buckers would tell you the over-roasting gives depth to the flavor. I say it just tastes like swill.

I had the pleasure of meeting Red Barn's master roaster in 2000. He's this great guy named Bill Trull and he knows his coffee...been doing this for twenty years. He sources great beans and roasts them personally in the giant roaster out in the burbs. The result is simply amazing coffee that is well-rounded, balanced, and has amazing mouth feel. (What's "mouth feel", you ask? Come on over here and I'll show you!)

Ahem. Anyway, we contacted Bill in the line of business and got him to hook up our hotel with coffee for several high end amenities we were doing at the time. We would brew it in our coffee makers and even with an industrial strength brewer, the coffee came out like perfection.

Sadly, we were never able to contract out with them; the two people in my hotel who believed in the potential for Red Barn (me and my boss) left the hotel and moved on to other things. I don't think that anyone else at the hotel took up the project. Regrettable, to say the least. Bill Trull is one of the nicest men in the retail world that I've ever met and he's just so good at what he does.

Which leads me to this RB stand in F-Hall. I went there expecting some perversion of the coffee I'd remembered so fondly, but it was BETTER than I remembered. I got a simple cup of some dark roast; after two sips, I had X-RAY VISION and HUGE PECTORAL MUSCLES. Thank you, Red Barn Coffee Roasters!

    Three Words: Milky Way Latte

    Two More: Chocolate Croissant

    Incredible!
Usually I go to Starbuck's for coffee during my break...  but I was running a little late this morning and saw the sign and decided that I was already late so why not just take a little longer. It was well worth it. The coffee was delicious and the croissant was still warm! AND I didn't have to wait in line forever!

It's the little things that make me happy.

Just another stop on my mission to get to know coffee better. My experiment has very specific parameters: every new coffee shop I go to, I try the same exact  beverage. My basis for comparison: a medium sugar-free vanilla soy latte. Red Barn's held up to my expectations in quality for the most part, but missed the mark in the strength department. The soy milk seemed to overpower the espresso, leaving me with a weaker composition that I am used to with Peet's or Starbuck's.

The service was a little slow, despite not having any line, and they only accept credit cards on orders of $10 or more.

Funny story. Okay, funny to me so perhaps not that funny. I went here with a coworker: neither of us had cash and there was a $10 minimum for charge. Obviously that meant we were going to spend $10 rather than going somewhere else/getting cash. So we each got a chai (delicious), a muffin (also delightful), and shared a piece of pound cake. Laugh now.

Okay so anyway, the chai and the muffin were great but easily blur in my mind with similar things from other coffee shops. But the COFFEE CAKE. OH MY GOD. Ridiculously amazingly delicious. They say you can order an entire coffee cake from them and seriously, I considered doing it and googling how to freeze a coffee cake. I would be afraid it would lose its moistness though (see? I really did consider it!).

So sure go here to try the coffee, or don't. But go here to try the coffee CAKE. Yes, yes, yes.

After MILES of walking on a Sunny day I was definitely looking for something to cool down with. Almost to the end of my stroll at Faneuil Hall to my next destination I happened by Red Barn near the entrance/exit doorway and it didn't have too many seating but enough for me and my luggage/backpack so I can rest my weary feet.

I asked the gentlemen with the BIG round earrings which expanded his earlobe for an Iced latte. After extracting the shot, pouring milk and adding ice, I was ready for something typical of Starbucks but it was YUMMY. This drink really ended my Faneuil experience on a positive note.

I was really considering a SECOND cup or even purchasing a pound of the Espresso Roast, that was how much I enjoyed it. They had lots of bagged beans on display surrounding me as I noticed my luggage was too full to accommodate anymore and I had lots of Espresso at home to deplete prior to the next fresh batch.

Here are the things that Red Barn is NOT:

    * A pretentious enclave where one takes up space all day in order to craft an angst-y poem on some iDevice to their equally emo S.O.

    * A shop that pipes in music from focus group-endorsed CDs that, wow, are available for purchase at the register.

    * In need of contrived sophistication by having to coin drink names that sound like the collision of an Italian dictionary and a list of J Crew colors.

And I adore the place for what it's not just as much as I love it for what it is.

Red Barn is a darn fine Massachusetts company that roasts their own coffee with heart and soul.  Its employees smile because they're friendly, not because the employee manual mandates it.   And they make my latte perfectly each and every time, because they know their craft and they rock it with each cup.

Sure, it's a coffee stand in Faneiul Hall. And yes, by writing this review I'm admitting that I was recently in and or near the dreaded tourist trap.

    But.

When it's late in the day, the caffeine withdrawal headache is kicking in, and your pocket holds only three lowly dollars that you found on the sidewalk, this is a solid option.

Even at half past seven the brewed coffee still tasted ok - not totally fresh but not burnt to shite either. The staff were really friendly and even offered us an extra cup (there were two of us buying one cup of coffee...desperate times and all that).  We said, "no thanks," but still - the smile, the effort, and all on a late slow Monday night...it was well worth it.

Wow! Finally gave this place a shot after feedback from fellow yelpers. I usually avoid this building on the weekend.

I followed Rich D's lead and asked for a triple shot wet cappuccino. Sadly, my response was a little less steller. "So, do you just want a latte?" Ah, sure. It's pretty much the same thing but I started to lose the new yelp buzz. Until I cracked into one of their scones. I purchased two scones because they don't take credit cards under $10 and my non-wet triple non-capp plus odwalla plus scone came to some peasant amount of $9.60 or so. So I got another scone and I was suddenly elevated to the status of credit card capable patron. In the end, it was worth it because the scones are awesome - they're borderline muffin tops but with the heft of a scone. Not healthy, not hearty- but tasty.

I checked "no" for accepts credit cards because a typical order at a coffee shop isn't going to sniff at $10.

But hey, the caffeine was good and the snacks excellent. Fan.

This is hands down the best commercially brewed coffee out there.  I used to think DD trumped Starbucks, and then McD's iced coffee stood above the pack.  I have just been turned onto Red Barn and I can't get enough.

Plus, the girls working there are super friendly and super fast!  I feel like I'm halfway through saying regular coffee, cream and sugar with a banana nut muffin when they give me my order.  Insanity!!!

Go there please and realize you've been drinking nothing but crap up until this point in time.

First of all, Erin the manager is an absolute doll. Always smiling and will giggle sweetly at anything you say for a nice ego boost.

The first time I came here I just had a black coffee (one of their signature roasts, I can't remember which). It was a decent cup of joe, nothing to write home about but certainly better than that crap at Dunkin Donuts.

Second time, I got a triple medium iced milky way latte. (OOOO, AHHHH.) My thought pattern went something like this:

    1) OHH MAN YUM.
    2) Oh jeez... I'm supposed to be going to Modern after this to try some pastries... I don't know if I'll be able to handle anymore sugar...
    3) Are there REALLY three shots of espresso in this? Doesn't taste all that espresso-y. (And if this is their drink with an extra shot, what's it like without it?) But I guess it's still tasty...
    4) Ugh, why is this getting hard to drink? Why is it so thick? Wait... did they use WHOLE milk in this?! CRUSHING CHEST PAINS. CALL... AMBULANCE... CHOLESTEROL... RISING...

I was too full for the rest of the day to properly enjoy my Modern pastries. :( It was tasty but really intense and, from what I could tell, they default to whole milk (rather than 2% like most places). Or it just could have been a barista's mistake. But either way, it makes for point-loseage...

Also, $5 for an medium iced three-shot drink? Slightly high for what it was.

Once the obligatory visit to Dunkin' Donuts was over, I started looking for a smaller Massachusetts coffee roaster for my caffeine fix. This location is in a quiet corner of Faneuil Hall and my visit was very enjoyable. The barista made a nice latte. Not the strongest coffee I've ever had, but it did the trick.

Outstanding coffee here, without a doubt.  Great brews - still indie in nature, and decent sweets, too.  If you are in Faneuil or near any of their other locations - check them out.  You won't be disappointed.

I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt with three stars. The Red Barn blend is very mild--it tastes a bit like a weak Kona. No bitterness, roastiness, spiciness, or fruitiness. Just a hint of nut and caramel. People who enjoy the basic coffee flavor but aren't into single-estate Guatemalans or ultra-citrusy Yemens may like Red Barn. But if you think George Howell Terroir coffee is great, you're not going to like this I don't think.

as i'm walking through the arctic, bone-biting chill each morning, i can really entertain only a couple of thoughts:

    1.  do i have cash? i hope i have cash
    2.  i hope the flavor of the day is cinnamon hazelnut
    3.  wearing heels when the cobblestone is covered in ice was a really poor decision. is nine west having a sale on flats?

creme brulee, irish creme, vanilla nut, pumpkin spice.. even egg nog! they have a different flavor every day and it's always roasted into the coffee, not added with syrup.

the best? fantastic, fresh, flavored coffee and friendly baristas every morning.   the worst? realizing i have no cash or it's chocolate raspberry day and having to trek across faneuil to starbucks for burnt, syrup-flavored coffee

    on ice, in heels.

In the present era of the $5 cup of coffee, red barn keeps it real...  2 bucks for a large and that shit will have you bouncing off the walls....  the staff is down to earth and super nice... and you dont have to be fluent in asshole to order a cup o' joe...  support local businesses , down with the venti-mcshit robbers at starbucks

I have a friend who lives in NY who has me purchase a pound of Red Barn Coffee for her every time I visit her and whose first stop when arriving in Boston is Red Barn. That should tell you something about the coffee. It's pretty quality! It is much more mellow than Starbuck's or Peet's. I actually prefer Bistani in the Faneuil Hall area, but it is really excellent coffee.

This place is much better for my soul than Starbucks..  the people are genuine and real (people who work at Starbucks are too but this isn't a large company) and for me, it makes it a little bit better easing into my day.  This place is great, the couple who seems to own it (they both used to be there every single day) are peaches and their muffins are out of this world..  I too have experienced the warm muffins here.  Two thumbs up, while still holding my iced coffee from Red Barn.  Plus..  I like the name a lot!

These guys do not know what espresso is.  Looking for an alternative to Starbucks, I tried a bag of their espresso.  I asked them to grind it for espresso.  When I got home, I found the grind to be too coarse, more appropriate for drip brewing.  When I brewed up an espresso, the flavor was a blend of annoying tastes, but not espresso.  What do I expect from a Yankee roaster?  Still looking for that Italian flavor.   Not finding it here.
