I'm sad to be dropping my rating here. It's still a restaurant I love, but they need some work - the bathrooms have been dirty and low on/out of supplies the last couple of times I went, and the main reason I'm dropping a star is that their web site has been down for absolutely ages now - over a year for sure. Gimme a break - you're a modern business and profoundly popular and you can't get it together to put your web site and menu online? Not really acceptable these days. You don't even have your hours on there!
I mentioned it to an employee once who agreed and just said it didn't seem to be a priority for them. But...it should be.
Food is still consistently very good in my experience, service is hit or miss (but more often hit, which is good) but the prices aren't low, so I'd expect more - put up your web site!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Purdy J.
Although a great restaurant option for vegan/vegetarian food, I feel that it's over priced for what you get.
Some of the items are better than others. I feel like the food/dessert was good a long time ago when vegetarian and vegan options were limited but there are a lot of people offering many tasty options these days.
Salads are a good size. Quinoa salad was disapointing. Huevos Rancheros was more like a breakfast omelet.
Vegan brownie was super disappointing... when I first laid eyes on it, I felt that it called to me "Eat me, Eat me! I am oooh so delicious, chocolatey and rich" and I knew I had to have it. After the first bite, I was sad that it was tasteless and bland. I felt that the brownie had tricked me "Ha-I'm not so tasty after all!"... as I looked down on it with sad eyes. -

So many vegetarian/vegan options! I'm not used to having more than one or two items from a menu to choose from. My boyfriend and I split a few appetizers and they were great. He also had a wheatgrass drink and said it was very good. Their desserts looked amazing, but I didn't have room to try any. Maybe next time!

So very disappointed. I've wanted to go here for quite a while...I won't ever be back! My mother and I waited 25 mins for someone to address us after being seated. Then we got our appetizer before our drinks. I ordered my meal to be low sodium. It was quite possibly the saltiest meal I've had. I could barely eat it. Not only was the meal salty, it was basically a slop. When both service and food are terrible, that's the sign of a really bad restaurant. Please don't waste your time going here are plenty of much better places in Victoria.

Loved our recent meal at Rebar. My son had the almond burger, husband had the enchilladias and I had the black bean and quinoa plate. I also had my first wheatgrass smoothie! It was SO yummy! Craving one right now! We then took some desserts to go which I think are made at Cascadia Bakery in Victoria :) We will be back often :)

I wish Rebar was in Montreal. I would eat there once a week. Stopped here with my veggie husband while on holiday and loved it so much we bought the cookbook!

Best vegetarian eats in Victoria. So good we went back a few times on the same trip.
Had the yam quesidilla which was absolutely amazing. The rebar salad was decicious. The almond burger sure didn't disappoint either.
Would definitely recommend this restaurant for vegetarians, and modern food lovers. We'll be back next time in Victoria!! -
Review from Angela L.
A friend and I hit up ReBar on Sunday for breakfast after a night out. I had heard great things about it, so I was excited to go. We lucked out, and there was no line, but there was still a bit of a wait to be seated.
We were feeling a bit haggard and needed a lift, so both of us started with a juice, which definitely hit the spot tastewise (but was a bit warmer than I would have liked). As for food, there were lots of items on the menu that appealed to me, but I settled for the huevos rancheros. My friend got a half order of the daily special hotcakes. We sipped our juice and waited for our food to arrive.
When it did, I was a bit taken aback by the size of my portion, as I wasn't that hungry to begin with and wasn't expecting to tackle such a monster. On top of that, my task was made even more challenging by the fact that it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. My friend enjoyed her hotcakes, and I ate as much as I could, but at the end of the day I couldn't help feeling a bit offended as to how poor the value was. To add insult to injury, I'm almost certain that I was charged $13 for my meal instead of the $12 listed on the menu (if my memory serves me correctly).
I'd be willing to return, but maybe for lunch to try that almond burger that everyone seems to be raving about...Listed in: Vancouver Vegetarian

This is a must go to for any vegetarian visiting Victoria.
Rebar has been in business since the 70s and is very much a cornerstone to the moder vegetarian movement. They have a wide selection of coffees and teas for breakfast, as well as fresh made juices and wheatgrass if you're so inclined. They also carry local beer and wine for later at night.
They aim to please, sourcing most of their food from as close as they can and paying attention to food security.
I am a big brunch person, and they have an ever evolving brunch menu that always please me. I especially love their tofu scrambles.
The Rebar salad is a must try if you're going to revisit, it certainly fills you up and is a nice blast of veg.
I've never had bad service at Rebar, but I have had subpar food from time to time. I would say that it's a combination of the extent to which I frequent it, and the fact that everyone has a bad day. They are really good, in my experience, at fixing mistakes and making it worth it. I've noticed that many of the original faces from Rebar are still around ensuring the place lives up to its reputation.
I also HIGHLY recommend their cookbook for any new or expanding vegetarian.
The other thing I'd add, it's not cheap, meals range in the $10-15 range depending on what you get and can go higher with a drink, snack etc. But you absolutely pay for what you get, the food is always fresh and filing. -
Review from Nicole G.
As a vegetarian visiting from the States, I was super pumped to visit ReBar after hearing awesome things about the almond burger. I even received a cook book from the hailed restaurant before I visited Victoria. It was hyped up.
Immediately, I thought the food would completely live up to the hype--the wait was long and the space was cute, colorful, and friendly-looking. I was excited.
By the time we were seated and had a chance to order, (I got the "reuben" and lentil soup, planning to bite off of the almond burger the rest of the table was ordering), my stomach was rumbling. I loved the concept of the place-the juice bar and coffee shop seemed cute and the menu sounded good. I wanted to try everything.
Let's just say when I took the first bite of my sandwich I was a little less than ecstatic. It tasted like what it was, tempeh and beets thrown on a piece of toast with a decent amount of salt and some veggies. The soup lacked any sort of flavor whatsoever and I had to drown it in tabasco. The almond burger was good, I wish I had ordered it, but it still was not phenomenal.
I think the concept of ReBar is great, and if I visited Victoria again, I may give it another shot. Unfortunately though, I can't give it more than three stars. The food was just, okay. -

Every time I visit Victoria, a stop to ReBar for a meal is a must. It's consistent, the staff are usually friendly, the patrons are often characters, and most importantly, the food is good. Not spectacular, dreaming-for-weeks-afterward-about-a-certain-dish good, but pretty darn tasty.
Don't come here if you're in a rush, or find ugly tablecloths offensive. Do order a smoothie, because they're delicious, but don't drink it too quickly because then you'll want another before your food arrives, but at $6-$7 a pop, you can only afford one.
As others have mentioned, the almond burger is always a tasty treat for those hankering for a burger, but not wanting a big fat meat patty weighing you down, or a flavourless, processed soy patty making you wish you'd ordered something else. The almond burger is made in house and really hits the spot for a hearty, healthy lunch.
I was in Rebar on Sunday morning for my first brunch experience there. I ordered the mushroom and chevre omelette. My food came unexpectedly quickly compared to my other experiences here, but it was equally delicious. The potatoes were perfectly cooked (although I wish there were a few more of them), and my omelette was jam-packed with filling, bursting out of the ends. It certainly hit the spot. Okay maybe I'm still dreaming about that breakfast a little bit. Coffee mugs were promptly refilled without having to ask. Very important.
PIck up a cookbook on your way out. I have cooked through most of it and haven't found a recipe I didn't like. I wish their almond burger patty was in there, though! -

The amount of times i tried to go here and the line up was to long for my patience. I invested in the cookbook, and it is my dietary bible. I find i can judge a household on whether they have the cookbook or not.
The few times i have eaten here it was earthy goodness. I usually opt for the things i haven't attempted to make just to see if i would actually like them. Lemon Ricotta pancakes? Vegan French Toast!, Greek red lentil soup.. all tops on my list. -

We had dinner, the 4 of us. Everything was very tasty. I'm not sure why some reviews mention that the food is blend. I had Monk Curry, very tasty and a bit spicy. I also tried their enchilada that my husband thought was too spicy but he can't handle the heat. I had a veggie juice Firecracker, was very good. They were out of many items on the menu which was annoying, but we were there at 8pm on Saturday night.

Review from elaine l.
Strike one: Made the mistake of going on a Friday night when tired after a day of travel, and hungry; we had to wait 40 minutes for a table, but wait we did, as Re-bar was recommended.
Strike two: We asked to sit at the tiny counter-style bar to have a beer while we waited, but we were denied. "The bar is for diners," we were told. The bar sat empty our entire wait.
Strike three: Re-bar boasts vegan options, but the ONLY choice on the menu was brown rice with steamed veggies. The presentation was nice, but the vegetables were cut SO big, it was embarrassing to try and eat with the given chopsticks. The dish, overall, was bland, flavorless, and a disappointment. We had a vegan brownie for desert. It was dry and flavorless as well.
Our waitress was on the downside of her busy night making it apparent that she was ready to be off; we didn't take it personal, but it was off-putting. Our bill came to $50+ for two meals without any extras. Overall, I felt cheated.
Now I tried to take into account that I was tired, and that it could have been "one of those freak experiences," but with so many good vegetarian restaurant choices in Victoria, I don't think I'd give Re-bar another chance. Sorry. -
Review from Gabriel A.
The other day I had a little cup of soup there and it wasn't the most memorable thing ever. It was a beet soup, I think.
OTHERWISE: I recommend this place to everyone who tells me that they're going to Victoria. The almond burger is killer and so are all the breakfasts. The greek one and the kurosawa one in particular. This is the good shit.
There are juices, too. They are super expensive so I don't order them unless my girlfriend is really wanting one, but they really are good.
ReBar is pricy but it's the good shit for sure -

Sorry, I'm going to have to go against the general consensus of reviews here and say that I won't come back or recommend this place.
I went here recently for lunch with friends visiting from Vancouver because one of them had the Re-bar cookbook and wanted to try out the actual restaurant. We had super high hopes for it because of recommendations from lots of places, but we left completely underwhelmed.
The three of us split an order of yukon gold fries/yam fries, spinach salad with smoked salmon and yams, and a 16oz. fruit/veggie juice. The dishes were boring and the value not there. There were five or so wedges of each yukon gold and yam that came with two different sauces: BBQ and a creamy one I can't remember. The sauces were kind of tasty, but the wedges paired with it weren't good. The spinach salad sounded really awesome in the menu description, but really, it was a pile of spinach plopped on a plate on top of some mushy yam slices, a handful of pumpkin seeds, and some smoked salmon. Presentation bad, salad dressing was meh. This was a big disappointment.
The juice we ordered was pretty tasty. I wouldn't have thought of adding red pepper and mango together in the same juice. They have a really extensive juice/smoothie list that could be fun to try out, but at those prices, it wouldn't be something I'd come back for. -
Review from Sean M.
We were on a day-trip to Victoria and while walking around, we found this place by accident. I'm not big on vegan or vegetarian to be honest but the stuff they conjured up definitely deserves praise.
The tex-mex variation, the thai spin-off and everything else we ordered hit the spot exactly the way it should. Although the cold weather & our tired legs might have something to do with it.
I would like to say that the decor could use some help but then it would take away from the overall charm so leave it be. -
Review from Susie H.
They had the best oatmeal I've ever had. I usually don't like things b too sweet so I asked for the marmalade on the side. But they had the recipe just right that I finished every last bite they served.
Their fresh juice combinations are too wonderful to pick. I took forever deciding. But their coffee wasn't so great. It was too bitter no matter what I added to it, and I didn't even finish it. -

ReBar has an absurd and undeniable charm. It isn't that this is the best vegetarian food in BC or even the best "big name" in vegetarian food (I am a devout Naam-er) but there is a lot that is great about this Victoria staple.
Every time I visit I am charmed by the friendliness of the staff, the quaint decor of the restaurant itself, and the care that is put into every dish. My mother is Celliac so finding a restaurant that offers up tasty gluten-free options has made it easier for both of us when we are visiting Victoria. Sure there is a wait at lunch time but the wait-staff put sincere effort into taking your order as soon as possible and then bringing your food out as soon as it is prepared.
As for the food, I suggest getting one of their many yummy juices and trying out whatever signature dish on the menu looks best to you. Note: as one previous reviewer suggested, the almond burger is wicked good eats.
So, despite the somewhat hefty price, ReBar is a great place to go and get fresh, well prepared food that handles any diet restrictions you can throw out. Give it a try if you have a reason (i.e. if you want to eat out but would collapse on the floor if you ate gluten... I love you mom!) but if you don't and you're eating on a budget... it might just be better to find somewhere cheaper. -
Review from Peter S.
Bland, uninspiring, and downright boring. I love what comes out of their cookbook however. But maybe this means my girlfriend is just a really good cook?
I knew I was eating two stars when I made the comment, "Wow, this ketchup is so yummy". That's kind of sad.
It was really good homemade spicy ketchup too, but that shouldn't be the only thing I want to talk about here.
It may be an institution in Victoria, but I am unlikely to visit this establishment ever again! -

Yummy yummy healthy food. Great for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner! It's great to be able to eat out without the guilt!
This place is unassuming. The decor is tacky and awkward... don't dress to impress (or bring someone here you're trying to impress...lol)
Go for the food. -

On the crunchy side of life in the best way possible. While I only had stomach room for a fresh juice (Emerald City) and date bar dessert, both were delicious!! I have them to thank for producing my favorite cookbook to date. If I lived in Victoria, I'd dine here often.

Oh ReBar how I want to love you more. You make pretty good vegetarian food and some great fruit drinks and smoothies. But you charge quite a bit for your food and it just isn't quite worth the price.
First of all, I will say that I stop here multiple times every time I come to Victoria because their fruit drinks are great. They blend the fruit/vegetables straight into the drink using blenders they have at their "bar". So if you want a healthy fruit drink, vegetable drink, or smoothie be sure to stop by.
Now for the food. When I was here two weekends ago I got the ReBar veggie clubhouse. It had marinated-spiced eggplant, grilled portabellini, mushroom and roast sweet bell pepper on a 'double-decker' stacked with fresh tomato, sweet red onion, crisp leaf lettuce and basil-lemon aioli on Cascadia Bakery's toasted sourdough. And it was served with a side salad and I chose basil vinagerette dressing.
I did appreciate how big the sandwich it was (it's called a double-decker because it is basically two sandwiches stacked on top of each other) and all of the toppings tasted great. But as you were eating it it felt like you were missing out on what could have been a great sandwich. If they had heated it up it I can't help but imagine it would have been amazing. The way it was I enjoyed it but didn't love it.
The basil dressing on the salad was pretty good. I have to say all of the seeds they used were very fresh (pumpkin, sliced almonds, sunflower seeds). The lettuce was just OK and overall it was an interesting salad but nothing mind blowing.
And that's pretty much the problem, it wasn't anything great but cost well over $10. To me the food is something I will do occasionally since it is light and usually a respite from all of the heavy three-to-four course meals I eat when in Victoria. But I would have a hard time recommending the food here to someone unless they were vegetarian and had money to waste.
I'll keep coming back for the fruit drinks for sure though. And that's what gets ReBar four stars. The food gets three for lack of value.Listed in: Top Restaurants, Victoria May 2010

I've been here twice, with a group of 5, and later a group of 8. In both cases, people walked out of the restaurant raving, converted. The food's yummy, extracting maximum flavor out of fresh ingredients.
As a vegetarian, it's nice to eat at a place where I can eat just about everything on the menu, but ReBar satisfied the cravings of folks in both groups of mostly non-veg friends.
The staff's also sensitive to food allergies and intolerances, knowledgeable about ingredients, and very happy to help. -

Had our best meal in Victoria here. The sweet potato & avocado salad was fresh and tasty, and surprisingly filling. Lots of fresh herbs and a very good dressing made me want to buy their cookbook. But alas, I have no room for more cookbooks at home.
Very funky interior, quick friendly service (there is no shortage of staff here) and plenty of interesting smoothies. The juice/smoothie menu is several times larger than the food menu. When I ordered a smoothie a day earlier, I was surprised to see whole pieces of apple dumped into the juicer and part of a cucumber. No juice from a box here!
Money well spent. -

We LOVED ReBar! For this food-allergy conscious family, helpful servers are a must, especially when my daughter is in-tow, and ReBar met and exceeded our expectations. The menu was varied and full of options from almond burgers to coconut shrimp. My husband had the udon noodles, my daughter had an amazing rice and veggie steamer, and I had the coconut shrimp, and for a (mostly) vegetarian restaurant, each of us left feeling content and full. Our server was wonderful, and the service was fast.
The decor is funky and interesting -- avocado green walls and fun art to be viewed from each seat. We were there for lunch on a Friday, and the line waiting to be seated did not end while we were there, however, it did only take about 15 minutes to get a table. ReBar is worth the wait. -

ReBar is a Victoria institution, serving a number of unique dishes for very reasonable prices, considering the quality and relative rarity of many ingredients.
Many items appear on the menu throughout the year, and others rightfully change with the seasons.
One highlight is Rebar's juice bar, from which you can order endless combinations of fresh fruit juice, which always seems to cure what ails you.
Even die-hard carnivores tend to like this place, and if they feel the need for some animal protein, they have fish on the menu.
I also like how they take reservations. -

When I spent four days in Victoria I ate here almost every day. It is an amazing cafe that sells soul food for people who love food and care what they put in their body. ReBar is so well-loved they sell their own cookbook of recipes served up regularly in the restaurant. You can even get it at Chapters (See The ReBar Modern Food Cookbook).
So if you sample something on the menu you love you can learn to make it at home. They do salads, sandwiches, soups, baked goods and fresh fruit and veggie juices, and have vegetarian and vegan options. I've had their Huevos Rancheros, which are delicious and a bean burrito that I had to come back twice for. It's guiltless eating that is good for body and soul. See http://www.RebarModern.... -

As a big group of nine people including two small children and two babies in high chairs, we were pleased that this establishment could accommodate us on a Saturday, but did have to wait quite a while even after phoning in advance, though staff was realistic about how long the wait could be.
Everybody delighted in the freshness of the food, especially a friend who cooks very healthfully and shops very consciously and owns the cookbook. The babies and kids were content with their orders, namely the Curious George sandwich (peanut butter, banana slices, and honey on brown bread), the fresh avocado, the spicy beans, and the steamed veg and brown rice.
Omelettes came with super fresh dill, salmon was candied in such a yummy way, coffee was served hot, and the server was helpful but not annoyingly present. Home fries were extra tasty.
Downsides: the long wait, not the cleanest floor under the table, a stale bagel, rather high prices.
Overall, well worth trying and certainly better than lots of the mediocre seafood joints geared at tourists.
Note our group included lots of meat eaters, all of whom were full and content at the end of the meal. -

fresh smoothies? yes. homemade jam? yes. homemade ketchup? yes.
I ordered the violent femme, which was really tasty and an excellent addition to the meal. Nothing in the smoothie overpowered, and the cucumber was an excellent addition.
This place would get 5 stars if the main dish I ordered was a little tastier. I ordered an omelette with caramelized onions and cheese. The flavors just didn't quite meld and it felt thrown together.Listed in: Diabetes!

Visited Rebar for breakfast with friends one morning. I heard a lot of good things about the vegetarian fare, and my roommates have their cookbook, so this was a definite destination for me on my last trip to Victoria.
However, to be completely honest, I wasn't overly impressed. The coffee was lovely, everyone agreed. And I think that the breakfast of my friends was actually pretty okay. One of them was eating a Salmon like contraption on a bagel, another something else. I chose one of the only vegan things on the menu, the Greek Tofu Scramble. It came with toast, and the waitress let me know that she would make sure it was the vegan bread. However, when it arrived on the table, there was butter, so she took it off my plate promising some fresh toast, leaving me with tasty looking jam and no toast. I initially waited, but my scramble began to get cold. The scramble itself was very bland and required ketchup. When we were basically done our meals, she delivered me some toast, which I shared, before we left.
I think I would give Rebar another chance, maybe for dinner, but after visiting some other cute places in Vancouver, and other places, it was nothing to write home about. -

Went to Re-Bar for a healthy lunch after kayaking. My London Fog, less expensive than at Starbucks, was also much better, however, it took a very long time to arrive at my table. I ordered the almond burger and soup. The soup was excellent. The almond burger was tasty, but fell apart as a tried to eat it... a little too heavy on the alfalfa sprouts i think.
This was a nice place to eat alone in. I didn't feel out of place at all. The godzilla action figures above the bar were cute and i loved the mosaic pieces around the entire restaurant. Very hip looking. Unfortunately, they do not have their own washrooms and, well, they were sort of below par. -

I can only base my rating on a take out experience. It was Sunday after Boxing day and it was very crowded, At least 5 people were wating for seats the entire time I was there.
I ordered the spinach salad w/ sweet potatoes, smoked salmon and chipotle balsamic dressing and it was superb. My boyfriend got some sort of sandwich w/ swiss and spinach. We were both impressed with the food, very tasty and unique.
The prices not so great. The sandwich says on the menu that it comes with side salad but we were told that was a mistake. Well it is a darn pricey sandwich (~$12 and about average sized).
The service was polite and the food took 20 minutes which is what she said it would take.
May go back again when a little fatter in the wallat. -

5 STAR PLUS: My husband and I took a short three day trip to Victoria earlier this week. It was glorious! One of the nice surprises of the trip was the discovery of a cool little restaurant called ReBar: Modern Food. It was so good the first night, we had to go back a second time. My husband had the most perfect green curry (Monk's Curry) dish ever. I got over my jealousy once I took a bite of my enchiladas con calabacitas! We topped dinner off with a slice of sour cherry pie-YUM! On our last day we had lunch at ReBar. My husband had the veggie burger and I had the shitake-tofu pot stickers with brown rice. We split a fantastic quinoa-corn salad-you must try it..a nice blend of texture, and flavor! Later, we found a book store and that had a copy of Audrey and Wanda's cook book: rebar modernfoodcookbook. Tonight, we will savor Smokey Green Split Pea Soup from their cook book...the aroma in our home is making me salivate! The atmosphere at ReBar was wonderfully warm and conversational, the wait staff that took care of us, were AWESOME. We are sad that Rebar isn't in our back yard.
