Review from Charles T.

In my quest to eat my way around Halifax I ended up at Ray's of India at the Seaport Market for lunch. I can only imagine what my life would be like if I spent it doing more productive things then trying out all these different places to eat!
I opted for the butter chicken with rice, some sort of flat bread which was not naan but I am not really sure what it was, a lentil pakora and a small cup of mango lassi. It came to $12.50, although because of change issues I only ended up paying $12.00. I felt it was a little steep given what I normally pay for at similar places at the market.
I will admit I have never been a butter chicken fan, but have only tried it when friends have made it and knowing those friends, it probably came from a jar from the grocery store, the regular ones, not the specialty shops. So I figured I might as well give more authentic butter chicken a try.
I got two little drumsticks, about the size of the drum sticks you would get when you order wings. The chicken was tough and needed salt badly. The sauce was okay, I didn't dislike it like I had the butter chickens I have had in the past, but it wasn't brimming with flavour either.
The biggest disappointment was the rice, I originally did not plan on getting any, at $4 for plain rice, it seemed like a waste. Boy did I wish I had stuck to my guns, it was so watery that I had two bites and it went in the garbage. All I could taste was water.
The lentil pakora was okay, I like the one i get from my usual Indian place better. The flat breadish round things were gross. I made myself take a second bite to make sure I didn't make a mistake, I didn't. The followed the rice in the garbage.
The mango lassi was nice, although again I prefer the versions I had other places better.
Given the cost compared to other places I frequent and the tastes, I would suggest skipping Ray's Of India. There are a lot of Indian options in Halifax and usually a couple others at the market which are better.Listed in: With a Little Help From My…, Marvelous Market Musts
