I'm a big fan of what Raw Sugar is doing. Think small coffee shop meets hole in the wall bar, where you're just as comfortable having a cup of tea while writing a manuscript or having a pint with an old friend. Occasionally they'll invite musicians to play acoustic guitar sets.
My next ambition for Raw Sugar is having a board game soirée with some friends. -

Raw Sugar Café is a hub of indie art, folk and emerging bands and a blast of vintage charm - right in Chinatown.
I use to go almost everyday when I was working in that area. The staff is friendly, the music is always good (if not local, then definitely not mainstream - I heard neo-Brit-pop once) and the food is delicious.
Unfortunately, the selection of food is limited as it is a coffee shop first and their opening hours are very flexible, starting around 10 am last time I was there (a few months ago).
However, if you love vintage looks, yummy bites and strong coffee, vegan options and plenty of teas, a place to read or chat as well as discover art and new bands - then Raw Sugar Café is a must see.Listed in: Best Coffee & Hang Out

I love this place. There's always a spot in a corner for me to sit down with my book and a beverage. They make an awesome London Fog, but I usually end up having a pint of Beaus (on tap). It's not the kind of place you'd go for dinner, but if you need a snack the food is quality. I recommend the quiche or one of the pastries. Great people watching too.
My only complaint is that it closes at 7 pm. Seriously?! The place usually seems busier at 6:30 than an hour or two earlier, so I'm not sure why they close so early. -1 star. -

FINALLY. It took three days and a decent walk over to Chinatown but I finally found the one café in Ottawa than isn't afraid to show some character. No more Starbucks, no more Second Cup, no more Bridgehead...it's all about the Raw Sugar baby!
Just past the Chinatown Royal Gates, this hipster hideaway is good enough to balance out the sea of suits and to-go cups that flood the capitol's streets. A mish-mash of vintage chairs, tables and couches from the fifties are scattered among church organs, vinyl records, owl figurines ("put a bird on it" anyone?) typewriters, books and boardgames immediately let the unconventional feel at home here.
Local art and, from what I hear, local band performances round out the community value of this coffee shop while delicious coffee (not even a hint of bitterness) and fresh baked sweets seal the deal.
If they had wireless, I'd never leave!Listed in: Ottawow!

Finally came here! Woo! I was really happy to find this place tonight, right in front of the Chinatown gate. Inside was nice, quirky mismatched furniture and lots of couch/table space in a fairly small area. The selection was decent (coffees, some tea, some iced variations, hot chocolate, etc) and served in mugs.
I really wish this place was open late. I spoke to the barista/owner and she said they were closed at 6pm this week (!!) but hopefully would sort out their hours soon.
Today, I tried their green tea lemonade and found it a bit weak, though the iced latte was very tasty and my friend enjoyed her hot chocolate. Next time I'll definitely sit on a couch as that area had a really cluttered-but-cozy look.
They also serve stuffed grape leaves, hummus, etc and their desserts look like they're definitely worth a try.
All in all I will definitely visit again, though probably not as a regular because for regular trips and to-go drinks it comes to approximately the same amount as Second Cup and is a bit less convenient, at least for me--I love a late night coffee run with friends on weeknights after work. -

The Raw Sugar Cafe is a great place for artists. It is filled with a strange combination of random furniture, that all seems to fit together somehow.
There is art hung on the walls, these exhibitions are changed on a regular basis.
Many locals come in here to play games that are on a shelf in the cafe. There is also a collection of books that you can read from. When you leave, you just leave a bookmark at your page and resume reading the next time.
If you feel like having something stronger than coffee, beer is served here. This is also great for when there are late night music venues held here.
A really funky interesting place! -

Ordered a few dessert pieces overtime from here.. can't say it amazed me after the huge cult following this place has.
Maybe I'm just ordering the wrong things?? -

Holy crap! Ottawa's 'only hipster café' is pretty damn good if you ask me! Beats out most of the hip cafés in Montreal I think. The service is nice, the selection of goodies and savories satisfactory, and the coffee is great!
The decor is inspired, and pleasing on so many levels. We went to see a friend play a show, and the sound quality was pretty amazing for such a small eclectic space.
All in all a lovely place that I will definitely return to on my next trip to Canada's surprisingly wonderful capital (I love how Ottawa keeps getting better the more you see and do there). -

Friendly service, decent coffee and treats / sandwiches. Cool place to hang out although has curiously limited opening hours. (I am used to late night cafés)

This is Ottawa's only hipster cafe, and it does it well! Great atmosphere, great decor, plus great coffee and tea make this place worth coming to again and again.
