Review from Nick B.

Rani's got a new owner - a young guy from Toronto who's really energetic about revamping the place and gettng it in. As I recall, Rani is a friend of his family and he's decided to come to Halifax and give the business a go. It's clear that he's putting some effort into it, too. I had a great butter chicken roti at his selection, complete with a homemade pepper sauce that he's planning to try to market more broadly.
I used to work in the Toronto area, and roti shops are everywhere, and always a good go for a cheap, filling lunch. Although the prices are higher, substantially higher, I wasn't at all disappointed here. -

uh, no, never - again. This place is just plain awful. I've eaten Indian and Caribbean food for years and this place cannot make butter chicken to save their life - or dishes of the like. Seriously, if you think this place has game it just proves that there isn't much choice for ethnic food in Halifax.....2 stars because the people are nice, but sadly the food is not...

Its not exactly a posh south asian restaurant when comparing side by side with Taj or others. Infact, they are more to Caribbean style Indian food. With that in mind, I would say that their hospitality and dishes aren't too bad. Rani herself is warm and very easy going.

There's nothing like a lack-luster converted Tim Horton's to spawn a truly bare bones diner scene. Rani's Roti Stop in the South End is by no means an atmospheric culinary experience, unless of course the ambiance you seek is a minimal décor, styrofoam plate/plastic fork type of deal - then this is your spot.
I really enjoy grabbing a bite at Rani's. She is always there waiting behind the counter, smiling when you arrive, serving up your meal promptly. Sure it's not the best roti if you compare it with a larger city's offerings like Toronto, but for the Halifax area, it's pretty good. I always get a potato or chickpea roti, and opt for some of here tasty in-house made hot-sauce on the side.
The servings aren't ample, but it hits the spot if you're not trying to sate a killer hunger. The prices are a tad high for what you receive, but for some reason it doesn't bother me - perhaps I can forgive because I'm smitten with the overall drab appeal of this joint.
I suggest heading in for lunch, perusing the free reads, and then heading over to the Sally Anne for a wee browse. You'll be fueled and ready for the afternoon post consumption of these sweet island eats at this little roti nook. -

Rani's Curry shop caught my eye after working and wanted a quick lunch. I thought a nice Hot Jamaican Patty would do the trick.
I was so disappointed with this. I am happy that they made their own patty but it was not good. There was not taste, period. It was not even spicy. I did not even finish the patty. The texture of the pastry was not the same that a patty usually has.
I was expecting a lot better from a homemade patty. -

I have been a fan of Caribbean food since a family trip to Trinidad a few years ago. At Rani's we had the curry channa roti, a chickpea and potato curry inside of large roti. It was great, spicy, but the real heat comes from the intense pepper sauce. Can't wait to go back!

This little shop is located in an unfortunate corner of a parking lot - not the most enticing from the outside but the food is tasty. My only complaint is the cost. We had two veggie rotis (one channa curry, one potato curry) which cost $7 and $7.50. A side of plain rice runs you $3, and the meat and seafood rotis get as high as $14.50. You get a healthy sized meal out of each one but to me this seems like a lot for what is essentially Indian and Caribbean fast food. I have since been discouraged from returning by the cost; I consider going, then decide to go home and make my own meal for a lot less.
They do have take-out and delivery though, which could come in handy if you're feeding a group. Ideal if someone else (like your company) is paying for it and wouldn't mind the expense.
