Farewell to one of Halifax's few indi music stores.  They will be closing their doors end of March.  On a positive note they have 50% off sale though it kind of makes me sad taking advantage of it.
The store is what you'd expect from a indi music store, bins upon bins of CDs, tapes, vinyl and dvd's.  Well organized and easy to find what you want (love they have a metal section!).
Customer service was great, we even vented on how the downloading scene is killing the indi music stores... but welcome to the new millenium I guess.  Maybe they ought to open a store where you pay to download music from itunes or something.
Sad to see one of my fellow neighbours move out of town.  Barrington St kills yet another business.  -sigh-

Random Play is a bit of a mixed bag. While I'm happy to see Barrington Street holding onto its last independent music outlet, this rickety little spot isn't exactly flourishing.

There are selections to pine through: punk, indie, soundtracks, top 100, best sellers, amongst others. Local music is displayed, and A to Z archives are provided for those on a quest for specifics. Vinyl of 7 and 12 inch are here for (mostly) decent prices, as well as racks of t-shirts for representin'.

The best part may be the 50 cent cassette tapes. You never know when you may need to pick up a quick gift or hint some nostalgia. And  with a price like that, its all too convenient.

I certainly wasn't blown away by my browse, nor did I find myself indebted to new and exciting musical vibes. Random Play is worth a gander, but don't expect fireworks.

I've had better Random experiences. But they do support local artists.

Random Play is an okay CD & DVD store. Their selection is minimal in comparison to other stores in the same area but their customer service is good. They don't harass you but if you have a question, they are more than happy to help. Their pricing on DVDs isn't that impressive. I can find better pricing on new DVDs in a drug store sadly enough.

One thing Random Play does have is a good selection of local artists. So they are a local store, supporting local artists. That is the reason they get a third star. Without that one item, I would take the star away. Why they don't call themselves "Local Artists & More CD/DVD Store," I don't know. Random Play as a title definitely doesn't help the sell that's for sure. So I would pop back in simply because they support local artists. That and for the off chance they have a CD I couldn't find across the street at another CD store. Besides those two reasons, this isn't a very impressive store. If they want to compete they must add a website and increase their volume along with decreasing their pricing. For now, three stars it is.

Random Play always seemed like CD Plus' less talented little brother. But now that the older sibling has vacated the territory, this small music shop is all there is left on Barrington. Kind of sad.

Andrew and I popped in today on a tip that they're now carrying vinyl. The selection wasn't vast or ripe with fruits worth picking, but the DVD prices were pretty good and there were a few worthwhile CDs along the walls.

I noted sections titled: goth industrial, indie, soundtracks, as well as a tiny anime movie section. The space is bright green and simple, with well organized displays.

Random Play is okay. If you're shopping for some new tunes, you might as well venture in. What have you got to lose?

I popped in to Random Play one day to check out their vinyl selection (which is listed on their sign as one of the formats the offer). My time would have been better spent walking around the corner to Taz - RP just doesn't have much in the way of vinyl, just a moderately sized rack of used stuff, plus a few new items on the wall. (All in the back of the store, if you want to check it out for yourself.)

RP seem to have a wider selection of CD's, but I'm not in the market. I appreciate that it must be hard to be a CD store these days, but RP doesn't give much of an impression that they're changing to meet the times. Maybe I'm missing something, though - they are surviving in some primo Barrington real estate, so they must be making some sales.
