    Update

    Yummy!!!

I tried their spicy tonkotsu ramen and it is delicious. The noodle is different from other ramens which I like. It is stiffer and the broth is awesome.

    Coming back for sure.

    It's pretty bad.

I came here for the first time during a work lunch.  I sincerely hope that I never have to come back.  I had the Shio tonkotsu ramen, extra large.  The pork slices are delicious.  That's about it.  The ramen noodles were thin and not that chewy.  The soup tasted like a milder, less authentic version of southeast asian laksa, rather than shio.  The menma were marinated too long and tasted off.  They didn't have enough bean sprouts to help develop the umami flavor.  Actually, I can't really remember if there were any bean sprouts in there.

It seems to me that Santouka is the only place to go for decent ramen.  I should go back to Motomachi some time or Nanchuu in Richmond.  I heard good things about Nanchuu recently.

This is somewhere between a 3 and 4 for me.

I had the tonkotsu ramen with black garlic. The black garlic really added a nice garlic kick to the bowl (stating the obvious).

I thought the bowl was a little small and they weren't too generous with the toppings. I should have gotten some add-ons. But my opinion may be skewed since I was ravenous after the Sun Run 10k. Included was pork belly chashu, seaweed, spinach, fried onions (a new addition to ramen for me), an egg, and seaweed. I thought the noodles were a little strange and reminiscent of the packaged variety, however, the broth had good flavor.

This is actually an LA-based chain, and it was the closest to my hotel. I wish I got to try some of the other Vancouver ramen offerings. Next time!

This is my first time at Jinya Ramen house. I frequent Kintaro on Denman.

I ordered the Shio, my 2 dinner companions ordered the Miso. We realised the noodles were different in both soups. The Shio noodle resembled the dried raw noodles you get in packets at T&T. The noodle in Miso wasn't as much like dried raw noodles, though my dinner companion did not like it compared to Kintaro's noodles. The Shio broth was good, but is nothing to shout about. The toppings were disappointingly few and the portion was exceedingly small for the price we had to pay - $9.00/bowl! A cup of green tea cost $2.00! You won't see me back at this Ramen house.

So, forget the atmospheric aspect of the Ramen experience, I can assure you Kintaro on Denman is a better bet for quality, quantity and all-round value.

For a basic ramen shop, (there are many in Vancouver) this is a nice quiet little place. It is also extremely nice to have the hostesses and staff greeting customers in chirpy Japanese.
Moving onto the menu, I found it to be a little bit more basic than it is at other ramen houses such as Santouka or Motomachi. I ordered the spicy tonkatsu and while it was mildly spicy, it was nowhere near enough to add to the flavour of the broth. The noodles were ok, but I felt that compared to the other ramen houses, it was not in the same league. Overall, I think Ramen Jinya isn't that bad, but unless you aren't picky with your ramen or want to avoid the long waits elsewhere, there are better options.

Update: I've since been to Motomachi and wasn't impressed. AND, Ramen Jinya has since updated their menu and now has even more awesome selections. So tasty. I've tried all the different broths here by now and can say hands down this is my favorite ramen joint in the city.

The noodles have been great each of the last 6 times I've been, and the flavors are just stupendously good. And now that they have my new favorite which comes with black garlic, seaweed, and an egg -- I've got no reason to go elsewhere.

For anyone who gave this place lower reviews previously, I encourage you to go back and try it again. They seem to be making a lot of updates to address some of the concerns voiced in these reviews.

I don't know much about Ramen, but judged just on it's own merits this place seems pretty good to me.
The rich broth was maybe a bit too salty, but was full of amazingly tender and tasty pork pieces. The noodles had a nice texture, the dishes didn't seem very spicy which is probably how they should be. Some of the additions like the leek are quite overpriced, although the boiled egg (tea egg?) was better value. The unsweetened iced green tea was delicious.
Food is served in very cool red dragon bowls and spoons, and the waitresses yell hello/goodbye/orders in incredibly loud English and Japanese, which is very cute.
Would definitely go again, to here and other Ramen places.

This place was a bit of a let down for me. Having an unhealthy obsession with ramen I was pretty excited a while back when I learned that Jinya would be coming to Vancouver, but after a lot of underwhelming reviews I was reluctant to try it. Until a couple days ago.

It wasn't terrible, but it definitely wasn't on par with some of the other ramen in Vancouver. I ordered the spicy tonkotsu and they gave me a choice of mild, medium or spicy, so I ordered the spicy. My girlfriend ordered the shio which they apparently only make enough of for 20 servings each day. It was around 2 pm so we thought they might be sold out but they had some. My spicy tonkotsu was not spicy at all and the broth was barely more than lukewarm. The taste was ok and they gave me lots of noodles - the bits of meat were quite tasty. The shio was ok too, but not as good as I thought it would be with all the talk of "only 20 servings a day!". Whoopdeedoo.

With the other options in the city I probably won't go back.

This is where I became hooked on Ramen and I definitely recommend that first-timers come here.

First of all, the menu is very first-timer friendly as they have a selection of broths for the less adventurous, ie. chicken and vegetable for those who aren't used to having fatty pork slabs in thick broth. As well, there is a wide range of toppings to choose from, or it's at least presented that way on the little plastic billboard on your table. This positive point may be overlooked by the experienced Ramen-slurper (yes, in Japan, you slurp up those noodles and soup!), but variation is important and going to a Ramen shop that only offers 2 or 3 items can feel limiting to a Western-menu reader. Oh yes, and there's wonton for the real rookies.

Now for experienced Ramen-slurpers: although I've never had the "authentic" experience in Japan, I feel like I've been to enough places in Vancouver to evaluate Ramen Jinya comparatively. On top of that, working so close to Ramen Jinya, I've tried every single thing on their menu...except for the spicy broth (sorry, I'm a weakling in that deparment!). So, here is my rating system for Ramen, and I've decided to compare it directly to Santouka, which I have to admit, is my favourite Ramen joint in Vancouver.

    1. BROTH: 4.5/5
I'm always a fan of their Shoyu, but I found all the broths to be very flavourful and extra thick. If you want to compare it to Santouka, which most people want to do, I'd say it's on par with theirs, but perhaps a smidgen on the fattier side. Definitely have a hot beverage after your meal to clean off your palate.

    2. TOPPINGS: 5/5
Both the pork and chicken slices are melt-in-your-mouth tender...actually, MORE melt-in-your-mouth tender than Santouka's, so Jinya takes 1 extra point for meat. When it comes to the other toppings, as I've mentioned before, Ramen Jinya really provides a variation: bamboo, corn, mushrooms, butter, sprouts, Japanese leek, spinach, seaweed, broccoli, tofu... Of course, most importantly of those toppings is the flavoured egg, which is a must-have, as no Ramen is the same without it. But to be honest, going from restaurant to restaurant, I've never had a flavoured egg "beat" another flavoured egg, so it isn't like their flavoured egg holds some type merit over the others.

    3. NOODLES: 2.5/5
If you're a first-timer, then you wouldn't know any better, as I didn't and would have given the noodles a 4/5. The noodles are cooked to a good consistency, hold flavour well, and there is the perfect noodle-to-broth ratio (though I have seen some order extra noodles). Against Santouka, however, Jinya's noodles lack that squiggly spring that makes slurping noodles so satisfying. (Sorry about all that unintentional alliteration)

    4. SIDES: 2.5/5
Definitely adequate. Karage, gyoza and pork chasu on rice are all tasty and that's that. Flipping over to Santouka, I'd say their gyoza is exceptionally pleasing and their pork chasu on rice is a long closed-eye sigh in your mouth! Oh, and as far as I know, Jinya still doesn't serve tea, whereas Santouka does.

    5. EXPERIENCE: 4.5/5
Ok, so ambience and service and all that jazz don't actually play a role in my Ramen-rating, but it is important nonetheless. While at Santouka, you're pretty much guaranteed to have to wait in line and sit rather uncomfortably in earshot range of your neighbours, Jinya's peak hours don't leave you feeling packed like a sardine in a tin. As well, Jinya has a wide white wall on which Japanese movies are continuously projected, an awesomely entertaining perk. I find the servers far more attentive at Jinya and I never feel like I'm being rushed out either.

Final perk of Ramen Jinya: All staff make a point of yelling at you in happy Japanese on your way out the door. =)

I am definitely the ramen aficionado.  I love Motomachi and Kintaro.  I saw this restaurant on a list in a magazine and really wanted to try it.

I came when it was an hour before closing and their last call for food.  I ordered the miso ramen and my boyfriend ordered the spicy.

The toppings that were offered without extra cost was spinach, bean sprouts and the pork.  I paid the $1 for an egg which is standard.  I hoped that they would have a bit more toppings like corn, seaweed, bamboo shoots without the extra price.

The noodles were ok, but motomachi and kintaro beat them in this category.

The thing they did well was the broth.  It was tasty and thick!  Although the spicy soup could be spicier.  We almost finished the broths completely.

Again, Motomachi and Kintaro are the winners in the pork cha-su department.  Maybe it's personal preference but I found it too fatty and low grade.

I would probably stick with Motomachi and Kintaro for ramen.  But it was good to try and the waitresses are super nice and have service with style!

Vancouver is the land of asian food. In downtown Vancouver, particular the west end, it's a land of ramen shops. With so many really great places to choose from, I really have to put Ramen Jinya at the bottom.

The noodles were cooked well enough, but the broth wasn't as rich as Motomachi (my favourite) or Santouka. I think the only thing this place has going for it is that it's located in a part of town where ramen shops are far and few between.

I went to this store many times,I totally love the noodles there,it's a little bit different from most of the ramen house on robson street or denman.
let me think how i can describe their soup. I am never a big soup kind of person, but i just cant stop drinking their soup till it's all gone and I would feel like to have some more. you can easily taste the juicy meat flavor from the soup,it's so rich but not feeling fatty. Their Chashu is perfectly done with some fat and some meat on. it melted in your mouth!!! the noodles is not the yellow ramen other store use to have,it feels like the noodles in the tan tan noodles type of noodles. ok now ,I am making it sound like a tongue twister :P
I had their shoyu ramen, and spicy chashu ramen.
as for shoyu ramen ,I love how the soup doesnt taste too salty like others, and the fried onion the on top as garnish just make it tastand as for spicy chashu ramen, they will ask you how spicy you want which is the first time some store would make a different levels of spiciness. I asked for extra spicy, and it does taste spicy!!!! I love it!!!!
I also had the gyoza,it was very good, worth to try it and see if u like it :)
the only down side of this restaurant is the last time when i went there with my husband,it was pretty busy, and the waitresses feel like not well trained and had no clue what's going on. we wait for 20 minutes to get our water ,and they messed up with our order because they don't get what we were ordering. other than that,I love this restaurant, and now I just by thinking about it i wanna go back there right now!!! num num num!!!

I'm not the expert on ramen shops in town, but I'm hoping that fact would help me be more inclined to be impressed every time I stepped into one for the first time. In short, I wasn't impressed. The staff is friendly, but the menu is confusing in that it's hard to discern some items from others based on naming alone, and substitutions don't seem to be possible without additional cost. For a newbie it would be difficult unless you didn't care which type of noodle and soup you wanted.
The broth was bland, ingredients sparse, and it wasn't worth the price. I may have to try something different next time, but it may be a gamble. What's unfortunate is that this is one of the only ramen options on this side of downtown, so Jinya has the opportunity to capitalize on that.

On a cold winters night, it's always good to have a bowl of chicken soup with noodles.

What they have here is kinda like that.  It wasn't until a day after I ate here that my brother mentioned to me that he thought their chicken soup tasted like Campbells soup.  And yeah, it kinda did!!!

For me, that was a good thing.  I know it's not Campbells soup from a can, but, now I'm not sure if it's from scratch.  It must be.

I do like the soup flavour, but my brother said that for a restaurant it's got to taste better.  I'm not so sure.

I like it.  It has a nice warm feeling about it.  The noodles weren't as chewy as the last time, but still decent.

H and I ordered  a side of Gyoza and a side of Chicken Karaage.  The chicken was pretty good. I'd eat it anytime.  Nice tender juicy large pieces of boneless chicken, deep fried.

On the big screen behind us was the hockey game
The staff were pretty upbeat and friendly and the place had decent rotation of customers.

So some may say yay to Jinya, while other purists may not.  I guess it really comes down to what you like.

It's all about the timing too.  Ramen in the summer on a hot day just isn't as good as a cold brisk winters eve.  Especially if it's with company I really like.

Bonus for the  sugar free option on the iced green tea.

I'm starting to doubt my memory of delicious ramen. Now, I'm not calling anyone unauthentic; ramen varies greatly depending on the region in Japan, and I haven't found one in Vancouver that matches my memory.

I was looking forward to Jinya, having been told that their noodles are straight. that was true, but the texture was still rougher than the noodles I crave. I had the Shoyu Tonkotsu, but I couldn't find the flavour. I would assume it's well-crafted, with flavours not in-your-face, but it seemed like nothing was center stage and all the dimensions of flavours were hiding in the wings. I never got to see them.

I tried their chicken karaage as well. It came with a bit of daikon-oroshi (grated white radish), which was enticing, but the chicken wasn't marinated enough. Even without the daikon, there was not enough taste.

Oh yeah, you can tell they've done business in North America, since the first thing they ask is whether you want anything from the soda menu (I'm not counting this against them). It's nice that they offer unsweetened iced green tea, too.
Another North American thing -- they have Vegetable broth ramen.

They have a TV projected onto the wall, with sound on. I may have not have minded if there was a game on or sports news telling me results, but I wasn't in the mood to listen to CFL trade details.

Pro:  It's not located near all the other ramen shops, but rather on the opposite end of downtown...which means that if were far from the West End, you now have a ramen restaurant near you.
Con:  The price is steep for your portion...and the veggies are truly sparse.  I would suggest that rather using a huge bowl, they should use a smaller bowl for the ramen so that you don't realize what a small portion you get compared to other places. But then, the smaller bowl might then emphasize how little veggies (spinach/bamboo) you get...it's more like garnish.  Oh geez...for the price, can we just get a little more veggie so that we don't feel ripped off???  Additional toppings range from $1-3...really?!?!?!  Flavor of the soup base and pork didn't blow me away and was mediocre at best.

I suppose that this is the price you pay for not trekking across town.

This place is hand down the best ramen in Vancouver.

I had the shoyu and the broth was so rich and thick that it almost tasted like gravy.
The noodles are handmade and you can tell! They are firm and perfectly cooked while absorbing just a tad of the broth flavour
The pork is by far the highlight. It melts in your mouth, but still has a slight smoky flavour.

If you are a fan of ramen and haven't been to Jinya, I highly recommend you give it a try ASAP!

Decent, no complaints.  One of the few places I could get a vegetable broth ramen, so this is bonus for me.

My vegetable ramen arrived and its nothing I've seen before.  Instead of various chopped veggies, it was topped with a green salad.  Yes, fresh greens, a little odd but once it was slightly blanched in the soup its not too bad.  However, it also came with cooked spinach and that's pretty much it for my toppings.  I could have added tofu, bamboo shoots etc but they start at $1.00 when the bowl of ramen was already $8.75.  A little pricey for what it is and portions are on the small side.  Broth was flavourful, noodles were perfectly al dente/chewy.

In summary, decent noodles but if you have no problem finishing the bowls at Kintaro, their standard size will not be close to being enough.

    Ramen: $8.75
    Plus toppings: $1.00 to $3.00
    Pop: $1.75
    All adds up rather quickly.

Nice decor, good layout and use of small space, comfortable seating. Good service and timely.

After reading some of the initial reviews for this new ramen place, I decided to try it out with my friend.

We chose the shio and shoyu ramen to share.  We also put in a side order of eggs and gyoza.

The staff was not adequately trained for the opening and she came out to say that they were out of eggs.  I was shocked and wondered whether they lost their mind because it was only 2pm and they've only been opened for a couple of hours.  She apologized and ran back into the kitchen, only to come running out right after to proclaim they have eggs again.

We got the ramen and was told that they were having issues with the stove and the gyoza was coming out later.  Truthfully, the ramen itself was good noodles, but the broth was really nothing special.  It tastes like concentrated chicken broth that I could make at home, unlike the ramen at Santouka on Robson, which is easily the best ramen place in town.  I usually don't order shoyu ramen because they usually come out super salty and ruin the broth.  In the case of Jinya, I'd suggest the shoyu over shio.  Shio tasted extremely blend and had no complexity in its falvour.

Next came the gyoza and it was plain and nothing to rave about.  But just as I was about to finish the last gyoza I noticed that the pork was pink.... it was HALF RAW!  ***Gag***  My friend got the runs that night, luckily I survived.

By the end of the meal we both agreed to not to return and we told the waitress that we wanted to pay half and half on the bill.  Instead of doing it straight on the mobile ATM machine, she took away the cheque and disappeared for 5 minutes.  She came back with TWO bills... one for $20, and one for $10.  We just stared at her.... speechless.  Another waitress came running out to apologize and took away both bills for another 10 minutes.... by that time we were so done with the craziness that I just went to the front to pay for the whole thing.  It was obvious that they had no clue how to operate their POS system.

If the food was absolutely amazing, we would have no issue returning with the awful service, but that is clearly not the case here.  Heed my advice and take your ramen cravings down at Santouka or Kintaro instead.

This is a damn fine Ramen. The Pork is excellent...tender...fatty...juicy melt in your mouth delicious. Excellent rich fatty super flavourful broth.

I'm not Japanese, nor am I an expert of Ramen. I do like food and this is good food. If you think instant noodles are a better choice than this you might have been drinking out of their toilet by mistake.

I have had other Ramen in Vancouver and this is one of the best...I have yet to try Kintaro*SINCE TRIED IT GOOOD!*, I know...I know...that means I haven't had decent Ramen...  but I'm sure they will be on the same level.

This is a tasty quality soup that I'm sure you will enjoy.

Also a plus for being in a fairly convenient location instead of way down in the congested west end. Sorry west enders...I love your hood but sometimes when I want to drive to pick up dinner the thought of getting near Robson/Denman/Georgia during rush hour A.K.A. dinner time makes me want to cook a box of Kraft Dinner. Here walking is easy, for me, and there's usually parking to be found.

The fiance and myself had been walking by this place while it was under construction for a while, and wondered when it would open up...   we're partial to Japanese cuisine (Junko the fiance being Japanese and all), so we decided to go in and give it a shot (I was thinking burgers... but I'm always thinking burgers).   ;)

It wasn't too busy when we showed up and ordered, but by the time our food came out the place was 75% full (got full FAST...  not sure why, it was about 8:00pm around then)....  there was a cheesy Japanese soap opera on the big projection screen...   Junko was having fun recognizing some of the actors, and commenting how old some of them looked compared to when she was living in Japan...  me... I was enjoying the translations which went from really good during the conversational stuff between the younger characters to some really bad Google translations when things got a little more formal with elders.   Hilarious stuff!

Ok... on to the food...   it seems like the style lends itself more to a Fukuoka style pork broth noodles (they do have chicken broth, and veggie broth too....   veggie broth seeming to be almost impossible to find in ramen shops).   I'm a fan of pork...  so it seemed a no brainer to me, and we split on two different types.   Junko went for the Shio broth, and I went for the Spicy pork broth.    It was a really nice balance of spice...  I didn't find it too hot, but pleasantly spicy enough (could have been a touch hotter... but I can add a bit of chili paste or flakes if I want).  Junko found it spicy, but our tastes on what is and isn't spicy are worlds apart.   She liked her Shio broth... but after we came back home she was pretty thirsty...  implying a bit too much salt in there (soup tends to be salty though...  a nature of the beast when you're not making it yourself).
The noodles in her were quite thin, and mine were a more normal thickness, but both were done very well and al dente.   Some places serve you mush, but not all can get it to that nicely cooked texture.   We ordered gyoza as well...  and those came out fairly quickly, and the soup shortly after we were about half done the 5 gyoza.   The gyoza were tasty... not the best, not the worst we had ever had...   pretty good value.   The price over all wasn't bad, but not great...  other places will offer maybe a better deal because the broth includes more extras like bamboo shoots and all... here almost everything you want to add is $1 extra...  so be carefull, your ramen could end up pricey if you like a lot of stuff in there.
The pork meat in the broth was quite fatty.... they advertise it as pork belly... so you have to expect a fattier cut... and it definitely was.  Think uncured bacon type meat.    Was this good or bad... that's a personal choice...  I would have preferred a slightly less fatty cut of meat, but it does definitely give you a more tender pork in the the broth.

Would we go back...  sure....   is it our favorite ramen shop in town...  no.  Not really.

Ramen Jinya is  chain from LA, that recently opened in Vancouver...and being a self proclaimed ramen expert, I had to check it out.

Firstly, it is not located in the 'Ramen District' (Denman & Robson area), which is a nice change, because I don't need to travel as far to get my fix.

I ordered the tonkotsu shoyu ramen, and was very pleased with my selection. Typically, the shoyu ramen in Vancouver is a tasteless bath of soy sauce and that's it. Not the case with Jinya...the broth was rich and flavourful.

But the highlight, hands down, is the chashu (pork)...it is the best around. It's not a tough, cold disc of crappy pork. Rather, it's a delicious, tender cut, that leaves you wanting more.

Being that it is relatively new, the sides (ie gyoza, rice balls etc) don't exist yet, but I expect they should be coming along soon.

Also, I wouldn't mind a tamago in the soup...nudge nudge wink wink

We've been waiting a long time for this place to open and when it finally did, we've gone almost every week since! I love ramen noodles and my favorite ones are the spicy soup base ones, the miso soup and the wonton soup...my favorite! I also like adding extra spinach to mine although I wish they would heat it up so it doesn't make the broth cold! I do however am weary about the butter they put in it too. Strange, but does give it a yummy buttery flavor, probably good to have once in a while, especially on cold wintery days!!

    POOR.  Bordering on Fair.

I ordered Tonkotsu ramen within 30 seconds of it arriving it started to form an MSG fatty film. It was SALTY as hell.

    Noodles were fair.

Not sure what other patrons are raving about. There's FAR better ramen out there.

Good restaurant. Tried the pork ramen with the original pork broth, and thought it was very tasty with lots of flavour and oomph. The noodles were also nice and chewy. The pork itself had the right amount of meat ratio to fat. No gripes there. But, I have to compare my experience here with Motomachi Shokudo. The difference is with the pork. Motomachi uses kurobuta pork, which regrettably, I'm partial to. But, all in all,  this was a good dining experience, and will happily return.

We really enjoyed this place.  It was one of the best ramen places we've had outside of Japan.  We tried three different varietes, the shoyu (soy sauce) tonkotsu, the shio (salt) tonkotsu, and the chicken.  The shio was definitely the winner.  The pork belly they use is really succulent.  Don't be surprised that ramen is basically the only thing on the menu.  We took our two young kids and since there isn't really a kids menu we ordered them a chicken and wonton ramen and sides of gyoza.  They brought us two small bowls for us to divide up the girls ramen and that worked out well.  Noodles are quite good.
