A girlfriend of mine suggested that we go to hot yoga and she found Rama Lotus on the Internet. I'd heard of it before through friends, but neither of us had been. We went to their hot yoga class on a Friday night. We arrived a few minutes early to fill out forms for new students. These are available online if you want to cut down on wait time. The place was really packed the entire time we were there - before, during, and after our class. A lot of people bring their own mats and towels, though, so everything is pretty organized and the service is fast. The prices are inexpensive, and your first class is only $8. Mat and towel rentals are available, and a long towel is required for hot yoga.
The hot yoga class is practiced in, of course, the hot room. The class was packed but there was enough space for everyone. The room wasn't blistering hot, and not too humid. The lighting was dim and the instructor changed it depending on what stage of the class we were at (stretching, increase heart rate, relaxation). Our instructor was fantastic! The class was for all levels, so she offered variations for each pose, for beginners, intermediates, and experts. Her demonstrations and timing were perfect and she pushed us to test ourselves, but never strain. My friend and I had a great, extremely sweaty, workout, and felt both invigorated and refreshed after. Our bodies were tired but not exhausted. We had a great time and would absolutely love to go back! -

Sigh, this place was a great experience and I'm definitely hooked. Rama Lotus offers over 100 classes each week with 14 styles of yoga to choose from. This huge selection allows people to go when it best suits their schedule instead of feeling confined to a set class each week.
I went to Yin yoga, which is more so about stretching, meditation and stress release, unlike Yang yoga, which is more about strength and it's usually what you find in Western cultures. My instructor was very calming, supportive and accepting of all experience levels. She emphasized the importance of listening to the limits and needs of your body rather than competing and comparing with the rest of the class. Sessions are usually 1.5 hours, but it went by so fast I didn't want it to end. My friend has also gone to Hot yoga, which sounds interesting. Basically, it's yoga in a room that's somewhat like a sauna. While exercising and relaxing, you're also draining your body of its impurities. It can get messy though.
Rama Lotus is usually open from 6:30am-9:15pm. First timers pay $7, while every class after that is $14. If you buy packages (e.g., 10 classes), you get a price break. A Daily Practice Package is $1675 ($4.59 per class for every day of the year). Students get a 50% discount on weekday classes (6:30am-4:00pm) and 10% off weekend and evening classes. They rent mats and towels, and they also have a boutique. -

I've been taking Bikram classes here for years.
Overall, it's a great studio with high quality instruction and a laid back attitude. The Bikram yoga room is currently being renovated with hardwood floors which is a great upgrade. Their class prices are competitive with other area studios. There is ample street parking available.
The main drawback of this studio is the small and busy changing rooms. It borders on unbearable on busy days. -

Don't expect good customer service if you practice here. I am not the only one who has experienced the utter rudeness of the staff at Rama Lotus. I have been studying Bikram yoga for years in Ottawa and Toronto. I had purchased a 20 class pass in June 2010, only was able to use one class because I had to move back to Toronto. However I do come to Ottawa quite often and was hoping that they could extend the deadline until August, so that I would have a chance to use them. The review committee said only if I purchase another 5 classes will they extend it for three months... so essentially after I spent 250$ or so on ONE class they wanted me to purchase another 5 class pass from them. This was their answer. I am an Ottawa native and have a lot of friends that practice yoga, none of us are going back. I will also encourage others to practice elsewhere. Their facility is dirty, until they removed the carpets there were ants in the carpets and most of the instructors ,NOT KATHERINE, are rude. She is amazing.
Bikram is the exact same practice at every yoga centre in the world and can be found anywhere else in Ottawa with better customer service. Practice elsewhere...
