I have always found the perfect accessory at Ragpickers, and come Hallowe'en time, it is perfect for figuring out what you want to dress up as. It has an eclectic feel the minute you walk in the door, with super helpful staff. There are clothes for ladies and fellas, both new and vintage. Reasonably priced too. The yearly all you can wear sale is a riot!

Specialties

Winnipeg's counter-culture institution Ragpickers Anti-Fashion Emporium & Books is among Western Canada's premiere vintage apparel, costume and book stores. For the better part of a quarter century shoppers have browsed among its beautiful historical costumes, thousands of select used books, and the surprise in its every nook and corner. Entering its centuried edifice, you are captivated by the endless variety of colour and texture--and the thrilling promise of discovery. Owner Kristen Andrews is the happy heart of an urban style oasis offering vintage & designer clothes, accessories, costume and prop rentals, jewellery and handicrafts, local CDs, and books to a clientele as devoted as they are diverse. Upstairs, the Ragpickers Theatre Annexe (the "Viva Libra" Theatre) is host to bands, plays and community events. At "Rags", ever the domain of artists, performers and activists, the casual shopper may find themselves amongst the brightest lights of the city's independent scene.

History

Established in 1984

Begun as a simple used clothing store for women, Ragpickers almost immediately began a Vintage Collection and soon the Anitfashion moniker was attached as fashionistas flocked in for the latest in underground &  retro trends....there followed Mens' Wear and accessories and the first of many expansions into bigger locations. The first major location featured Emma G's Deluxe Eatery in the front of the store, the next location added a book store, the next after that a 6000 sq ft space over 2 floors  offering Bicycles, Furniture, Custom Made Jewellery, Zines and Printing and had the energy of 13 people working collectively. The current location has seen Ragpickers purchase the Antique Collection of historic theatrical costumers Mallabars and as such offers rentals and a Vaudeville style Theatre for productions. While many movie and theatre departments shop for their items here, the general public is still welcome and in fact, newly found vintage is still put out nearly every day!
