Well this is an easy A because there's no place like Radar. It's the best. I've been coming here since they opened and have always been treated wonderful. All the stylists are very sweet and friendly. Between me, my kids and soon to be husband we have had all our hairs done by a few stylists. Martin does dude hair only, and does it well. We love Martin. Sharon has cut my son's hair and did a great job, and is just a sweetheart. Misty has cut and styled my hair, loved it. Aubrey did my color once... looks amazing. And last but not least is my favorite. Betsy.
Betsy is the master at cuts, color and styling while she dances and tells jokes. It makes the whole experience more fun and on top it, you have kickass locks to show off!
I love Radar Hair & Records! -

I had a great haircut with Jennifer C. last week. My first thought the next morning is "damn, I love my hair!".
I've moved a few times the last several years, and always nervous to have that first session with a new stylist. My thick and Asian hair can be a lot to handle sometimes, but Jenn did a great job with the layers and lightening the weight of my hair right in time for the summer weather. I loved the big space, too.
I definitely see why this place is rated so well. I felt right at ease, she asked me very insightful questions about how I keep my hair, and she was incredibly friendly about discussing other alternatives to coloring my hair in a salon. No product pushing, no urging to make future appointments, just a great time getting my hair cut. They also offer a touch up trim a few weeks out to clean up bangs, etc. I love this! -

Go see Katie! I've been seeing Katie for about five years now. I followed her from VAIN. She knows what is doing. I trust her with my hair that I let her do what she wants. She's definitely likes to work with color. Since I have dark/warm hair, she knows to work with 'cool' colors so my hair doesn't turn orangey. She is so passionate about her profession that she even has tattoos of her hair scissors and etc! I will continue to go to Radar as long as she is there....She's the best hair stylist out in SEATTLE :)
As for the review on the salon... It's a spunky, oldies, hip, not-your-usual hair salon. The owners are super nice and they bring their dogs, Opal and Little Richard to work. It's an open space warehouse-ish type of area. They also sell records and artwork... Duh, hence the name... (Hair and Records). there's lots of parking (on the weekends) and public transportation goes thru that area since its across the Starbucks HQ.
If you don't go here... you're missing out on the best hair style in Seattle :) -

I recommend Sharon unequivocally!!
I've gotten my haircut by Sharon for several years and each time, regardless of the length and style, it's been exactly what I wanted. Not only is the cut great, Sharon is smart and funny and I enjoy the time talking and catching up with her as well.
You can't go wrong with Sharon! -

Stumbled upon this venue via Devacurl's site.
DevaCut specialist Aubrie tamed my curls and gave me the umph they needed! Even after two months my hair looks like it just got cut. I liked her quietness, so I could really relax and not have to chataway.
The venue is fresh and edgy. Saw all types of people walking in - suits next to dreads next to sweatshirts. Everyone was so friendly. Definitely recommend! -

Radar is much more than hair & records -- did you know Radar is also an event venue? And a solid community? I've been here twice in the past month and have enjoyed being in this funky, arty space.
My first exposure to Radar was for a SpokAnarchy! release party. My ears were entertained by the 80's punk rock scene on stage, now 30 years older. My eyes were drawn to the walls -- Edgar Allen Poe, Bride of Frankenstein, art on vinyl, and even on velvet. My current favorite is a velvet poodle on a moped, for your viewing pleasure in the bathroom.
My next trip to Radar was for a Bread and Soup event to benefit Radar's own Betsy, who is one of the key forces behind this amazing space. While I don't know her personally, I can only imagine what a special person she is to create this space, and then fill it with so many caring people who want to support her to get well. I've also heard there are some heads of hair that miss her ultimate stylin...
Keep your eyes and ears open - there's a party going on at Radar! -

Went for the first time to Radar Hair and Records from my friends' recommendations. I had Roxana cut and color my hair, which is very short.
The place is very big and open, full of color and art on the walls. Really cool atmosphere. All the employees there are hip and friendly, there are couple dogs in the space and it's just fun to be there.
Raxana is very sweet and fun to talk to. She listened to my ideas about my haircut and color, studied my hair for a while, and gave plenty of suggestions. She finally decided on a vision and made me feel confident that it'd look great. She was happy to go "bold" with both cut and color and had tons of great ideas for styling it too. Just overall made me feel very happy about my choice.
Needless to say Roxana was very diligent cutting my hair, she's a real perfectionist. She took her time to cut, dry, cut, get the hair wet, cut again, see how it dries, cut again. Awesome! Even after styling my hair she couldn't help but continue to do tiny touch-ups to my already perfect cut. I really I appreciate that kind of thoroughness.
I felt like a rock star walking out of the salon and I will definitely be back to see Roxana; she got a great deal of awesome ideas for my future hair-cutting adventures. -

Tried to make an appointment over the phone once at Radar. The guy who answered did not answer with the business's name and then when I tried to verify I called the correct place he was way rude. I gave up at that point I will not give a business money when they can't answer the phone correctly and professionally.

You know you've gotten a great cut when you are constantly getting compliments from strangers on your haircut.
I've been seeing Roxana at this salon for the past year or so. I was originally referred to see another stylist here but I was having a hair emergency and Roxana could see me immediately. She did such a wonderful job that I've been coming back to see her on a regular basis (every 5-6 weeks).
Roxana has a way of getting my color perfectly matched and excellent gray coverage. It never fades. Also my hair carries a lot of red pigment in it so a lot of times with other stylists it ends up brassy looking but not with Roxana.
The salon offers veggie dye which I love!
I've recently moved away but am still coming to Seattle periodically and continue to get my hair done here. The love affair with Radar Hair and Records and Roxana continues.
Every time I come in I am warmly greeted and taken to Roxana's station. She always whips up a magical cut and style for me that is fresh and cutting edge.
I love the fact that everyone that works here is real. And not snobby as you find in some other salons.
I love the retro everything here!
Cuts and color are very affordable here.
If you come on the weekends or after hours you can park for free on the side of the building. -
Review from Morgan R.
I visit Scarlett here at Radar and, like, seriously - best haircut I've had in years. She's working with me to grow my hair out and is even understanding of the fact that I can't always afford to come in every month (which is such a blessing). She really, REALLY takes her time, makes sure everything is perfect and even, responds really well to whatever crazy input you have about your hair, and suggests similar alternatives if she thinks whatever you have in mind won't work. She has been a blessing to my fine hair, and I'd highly recommend her to anyone who is frustrated with their mop being in a perpetual state of frustrating disarray.
Aside from all of that, I LOVE the space. It's so bright and cheery in a very non-offensive way (think Andy Warhol, not a preschool play area) and they really made such creative use out of an old industrial space. The vintage shop is cute and everything has an antique vibe, although it is well decorated and put together. I don't know, I just love coming here! Every visit is a treat, really. -

I followed Scarlet to Radar from her previous salon, and it's definitely worth the extra trek! She is a master of thin/fine hair and I trust her completely. I've always been thrilled with what she's done with my hair, and all her suggestions have turned my flat, boring hair into something wonderful.
Radar itself is a very cool spot, and I was thrilled with all the cool retro stuff to look at while I waited, like 8 tracks, records, cassette tapes, vintage clothes and purses. There was also some interesting art on the walls, and everyone was very nice. Come here, you won't regret it! -

I have been to this location with Scarlet twice, and each time it perks me up-- I love the art on the walls and the bright pop of color. It breaks up the gray of the sleepy Seattle Saturday doldrums.
I have very fine hair, and as such, I have been relatively unhappy with my boring hair for most of my adult life. All of that has changed, however, since I found Scarlet. I was hesitant to trust people, and went form stylist to stylist, dissatisfied with the experience and the style itself. I found it difficult to find a stylist who knew what to do with fine hair. After years of fantasizing about a major change, but being too timid to change, I went from brassy-blonde-blah hair, to platinum blonde, and have successfully grown out my bobbed hair. By summer I will have the beautiful waist length hair of my dreams. And its all thanks to finding the right hair artist.
And I say artist because she is. Scarlet is a hair genius. She knows exactly what to do with fine hair, with long hair, with bleach, and knows exactly which products to use. She and her magical scissors have changed my life.
Definitely worth the price, definitely the best place to go for getting your hair done, and especially, for the fine haired ladies among us searching for the answers to the flat hair dilemma, check out Scarlet, she is brilliant. -
Review from Niko O.
Being a long-time Planned Parenthood supporter, I jumped at the chance to participate in their recent Chic for Choice fundraiser. There were about 7 salons and I called Radar because they were nearby and had terrific Yelp reviews. A guy named Johnny called back and booked me with the stylist Kate Kalnins. Since it was a Sunday, parking was super easy in SODO and I had no trouble finding the salon.
I didn't even have time to sit before Kate came up to get me. Immediately I felt a bit nervous because her own hair style is pretty radical... kind of like the goth version of the Flock of Seagulls guy. I'm a dorky middle-aged woman, so Kate was probably equally taken aback by my extreme dumpiness and lack of style; nevertheless, she couldn't have been more welcoming. She was so friendly and gracious, all the while being very attentive and conscientious about her work. Kate gave me an amazing cut, kind of Joan Jett and very different from the boring look I've had for the past 10 years. I wasn't expecting that and it was all due to her "shear" skill and imagination. Kate's going to be my stylist from now on!
But the biggest surprise of all was Johnny (the appointment guy), who came up to me while I was sitting in the chair and asked if I remembered him. Well, I had to put on my granny specs to see who he was and by golly, it was Johnny Samra, who I'd had the pleasure of working with (along with his mom) about 8 or 9 years ago! In between other careers he got married to a hair stylist named Betsy and together they launched Radar over a year ago. I'm so happy for Johnny's success. He's fun and a really great guy with a big heart. Now he has a venue for art, music, style and the occasional benefit. Speaking of which, there's a benefit for the Prostate Cancer Foundation going on this Saturday, so go! And say hi to your new favorite hair salon! -

Review from Raina D.
I visited Radar last week and had my hair cut by Katherine. She took my hair from a grown out gross bob to a short fun cut, just like I wanted. I ended up with a choppy, spikey, shavey, cut that was just what I needed!
The location in SODO makes parking easy and hassle-free which is just one of the perks. The building has an old warehouse feel with some modern, bright touches, and is very cool. They also have a few dogs that greet you as you walk in!
As for Katherine, she took the time to cut my hair carefully and not just rush to the finish. She asked for my input (which I really didn't have much to offer) several times as she was going rather than just waiting til the end as with most people I've been to.
The price is very affordable especially because I've paid more for haircuts that turned out just so-so.
I couldn't be happier and definitely recommend Radar to everyone, with a 5 star yelp average (and no mixed reviews), you can trust that whoever cuts your hair will do a fantastic job. This is the first time I will actually return to a stylist in 3 years of searching, so congrats Radar and Katherine! -

My boyfriend was due to pay Martin a return visit and this time, instead of waiting for him, I opted to get my haircut at the same time. I have long layers and it's hard to mess than up, so I wasn't picky about my stylist. Misty was available and affordable, so I thought "why not?"
She was super nice and listened to what I wanted (which was basically for everything to look the same, just shorter). She delivered on what she promised and I was never worried at all during the entire process. Though she used a multitude of products in my hair, she never once tried to sell me anything (I really appreciate that!).
I'll probably be back in a few months for another cut.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Martin has been cutting my husband's hair for a few years now. The hubby is not the easiest customer- extra large dome, and thick hair, both of which just stand out more if the hair is cut too short. Martin always tailors his hair expertly, and does little extras like an eyebrow trim that we both appreciate.
Recently, I was looking to do a rather drastic change from my shoulder-length blah, and after chatting up Martin for a few minutes he suggested I go to Sharon. She rocks SO unbelievably much. I admittedly gave vague preferences (chin length, not too fussy, maybe some layers?), but she busted out a fantastic haircut that exactly matched the picture I had in the back of my mind. Regarding the 'not too fussy' - I literally have to do nothing to it and it looks awesome. I can even wake up in the morning and throw on a hat for a few minutes to 'style' it. Sharon is also a bike commuter like me and totally nailed the looks-good-post-helmet criterion. I am in awe.
At $65, it's a little more than I'm used to spending for a haircut, but Sharon also does a 4-week checkup and free trim, just to see how things are working out with the new 'do (how cool is that?). And honestly, for this kind of skill, I'd probably be willing to pay significantly more. -

Hapa Boy is extremely good looking despite everything he does to keep himself looking as raggedy as possible [he owns FOUR In n' Out t-shirts. That alone is evidence] This is a man who also owns no hair product, and was happily using Pert before I came along. Pert! But as luck would have it, he has happened upon the ONE man on earth who can tame his incredibly thick hair: Martin Horiuchi.
Yes, I love you Martin. We've never met, true, but you manage to keep my Hapa Boy looking cool in the face of incredible odds. I salute you, Martin. You have kept the bowl from my love's head, and for that I wish you many more years of happy clipping. -

I have put in a couple decades looking for someone who gets my hair. I called Radar in a desperate attempt, explaining my hair to Johnny, who with the right mix of humour and intensity quizzed me on my needs. He sent me to Katherine. I went. She cut. I thought I'd wait a couple weeks to let the cut grow out and see how it behaved before I reveiwed...and now, simply, I can stop my frantic search. I don't know what she traded to the powers that be so she can cut like this, but the upshot is:
Katherine = Pure Genius
Also, the place is sweet and the folks nice. -

Alright, I am writing this review for one specific sylist: Katie Wagner. Radar Hair is supreme awesomeness but Katie is da bomb! I'm an older gal, bit's of silver poking through, and was living in Belltown-skads of twentysomething, hipsters, artists and the like.
I've always been a low-key kinda girl, but I wanted to be stylish. So, after a consult, Katie was the right one to go to because she not only cut and colored my hair -in beautiful complementing highlights, she made me look like I fit into the scene. I felt sexy, sassy, and confident as I swaggered back to Belltown. I was finally uber cool. And Katie was so friendly-like an old time confidante. She made me feel confident, understood my needs, and really listened. The cut and style was perfection on parade, and the coloring made me look younger by a good 5 yrs. Will I go back? Oh hell yea...will Katie be my go to girl-damn straight. -

Fellas, if you know you deserve a proper haircut with a modern edge, go see Martin Horiuchi. Martin is helpful in providing guidance and insight to a hairstyle that will suit you best.
Also, he is a true Seattle (southend!) original, born & bred. Don't miss out on a haircut from this up-and-coming Seattle original. -

Any time the boyfriend gets a hair cut I would cringe. Super Cuts would shave his head too close and he'd look like he was on his way back into the military.
Not at Radar Hair and Records.
When he first started going to Radar I started actually COMPLIMENTING him. He was ecstatic that he finally found a stylist that knew how to treat his hair right. And he was bringing home some choice vinyl records. Sex Pistols, Black Flag, Gang of Four... good stuff!
Of course I would have to try out his stylist too.
And I did.
Betsy is the owner and gave me the cut and color that I had been wanting for the past five years. She just GETS IT!! I felt really bad because she stayed really late since my hair was getting bleach, dyed, toned and cut but she was super nice about it. I will definitely be back for more!! -

I have never followed a stylist from one salon to the next because I had never really thought there was much of a difference...until now.
I first came across Martin at Valentine's after being fed up with haircuts that were just not worth it. After becoming curious of Valentine's I read reviews that said stop being cheap and pay the extra $10! Great advice! I luckily made an appointment and got Martin. Not only does Martin take the time to figure out what you are looking for, but he also uses his talent to offer his own sense of style and make sure the job is done right.
Not only is Martin great, but I enjoyed the atmosphere in Radar with all the color, records, loving dogs, and garage style vibe. Its a good experience well worth the money. -
Review from Chris T.

I get my haircut every few weeks as image is pretty important to me, but most of it has to do with the fact I have to look my best in front clients. I've been to em all - The corner barbershop, the "friend of a friend", college students in barber schools, franchise establishments (supercuts, megacuts, etc, etc), upscale "why the hell did I pay that much for a haircut" foo foo type salons...then..there's Martin.
It's kind of like comparing a swiss army knife to a scalpel..while one tries to be many things to many people, doing every job poorly, Martin is the scalpel - representing the best talent money can buy. He's more like a specialist, really.
So much so that I've been going to him for many years as he's transitioned to different companies. While location may have changed, service and quality have stayed the same. In the end, location and ambiance falls 2nd to service and talent for those looking for the best.
Though I don't have difficult hair, I'm really particular about my cut. My problem has always been finding a barber/stylist that listens and knows how to interpret my feedback while creating a product that I'm satisfied with.
The confidence reinforcing feeling you get from a fresh cut is kind of like that feeling you get having that first well deserved drink after a long week at the office. If this was the case consider him the bartender!
On top of that he's a musical genius and really down to earth regardless of his huge fan base and for those who are fans of music, the venue where he's currently located serves as a great backdrop for cool informative conversation with one of the regions top musical talents.
Job Interview, Hot Date, Wedding, Friday night on the town, whatever the occasion (even if there isn't one) - if you want to look your best, do yourself a favor and go to Martin. -

Sharon is the only person in the world who can make me look cool.
The first time I went in, I cut a couple of inches off my mermaid hair. The second time, I had an episode where I cut a huge box in my bangs because they were falling into my eyes. Sharon fixed that up and gave me a cute shorter cut. This last time, she thinned out my rebellious thick hair so that it would look less 'mom' and much cooler.
She's a life-saver and as another reviewer said "a keeper!" -

I do not give 5 star's frequently, but when I do...you better believe it. This will probably be the only 5 star that I will allow myself to rate, due to my experience with frequently getting my haircut every 2 weeks.
Go to Martin, is all I can say. He has a gift like no other.
I personally know the man who got him (Martin) started, and it's not Valentine's. He is very particular with how he wants his hair, and that's no joke. He has magic with the clippers, probably because that's what he started cutting with.
It may be pricey, but it is worth it.
Keep up the great work Martin. I have not forgotten you. Some day we'll meet again.Listed in: Best of the Best -…

Betsy is the BEST!
She has solved the mysteries of my cowlicked, part-curly-part-straight hair. For the first time in literally 25 years, my hair is manageable, healthy and looks great! I owe it all to Betsy at Radar Hair & Records.

This place ROCKS! I am a 45+ professional/ soccer mom who got bored one day this summer with my doo, and thought I would stop by the cool looking place by the Stadiums!
So glad I did. I got a walk in appt. with Brie (sp?). She was incredible. She took lots of time with me and gave me a fabulous cut that lasted and looked good for a long time....
When my teen daughter heard about the combo record shop/ thrift store/ art gallery/ salon/ concert venue she wanted to try it too. Misty rocked her world as she patiently combed out every dread wanna be inch of her mane! Misty listened to her and made my sweet girl even more beautiful than she usually is!
As Misty tamed the wild mane, I returned to Brie who once again gave me an incredible cut. So happy to have found this place. I am horrible at booking appointments, but with the combination of talent, great attitudes and fun, I know at some point I won't be able to just walk in.
This place is AWESOME! -

This is an awesome space. I followed Scarlett over here and I stand by my previous review (at her previous salon) that she is awesome. She has taken my har from bright red to a beautiful and very platinum blonde. She is fun to talk to and is always super nice. Today I came to he and said that I felt like I wanted to shave half of my head...kind of. And she wisely told me to wait until I really wanted to do it...very good advise. I appreciate that she listens to what I want and always takes great care of my hair! I am moving, but if I weren't she would likely be my hairstylist for a long time.

A little bird told me this was the new place to be cut so I got on my good foot and hopped the light rail on down.
Ok, so I'd been cutting my own bangs for the past year after a terrible cut I got from another salon (ahem, Rudy's). What I've come to realize is that every good female hair stylist has had Betty Page bangs at one time or another.
Jenny S. is no exception. Although she has some sweet dreds now, don't let that throw you off. She got me cleaned up and made me look presentable--giving me a nice trim for the rest of the do by adding back in some layers to my grown out hippie mess.
Prices are reasonable. Sure, they are a nice place, but they are not charging ridiculous amounts like you'd see at Aveda or...well, that's why I was cutting my own hair. I just don't pay over $40 to get my hair cut. Its hair. It grows. Its not forever.
Anyway, the place is rad. I couldn't get over the huge warehouse feel and awesome colors--I'm a big fan of color, and oh boy do they got it. Lots of art on the walls and adorable doggies all about. I get the feeling it would be sweet to just kick it here.
And I hear they're having a party soon w/bands and all that so we will get to kick it soon. Pretty friggin wicked for a hair salon!
Oh and if you're a dude, get a cut from Martin. My man has never looked better. -

Having the same barber for over 10 years while living in Philly, I was very nervous about finding a new barber when i moved to Seattle about 3 years ago. I somehow stumbled upon Valentine's Barbershop online and the receptionist working there enthusiastically recommended Martin. As an African American, I was doubtful at first about Martin's ability to cut my hair without jacking it up. I was very pleased and pleasantly surprised after my 1st haircut with Martin--it was not only comparable to my barber in Philly, but i liked it even more. Martin has some diverse skills as a barber to go along with his diverse clientele.
When Martin decided to "take his talents" to Radar Hair & Records, I did not hesitate to follow him. I actually enjoy the new spot more than Valentine's. There's a nice laid-back, retro-like ambiance at Radar Hair & Records and it's very spacious. The staff are cool and down to earth as well.
So fellas, if you want a fresh cut for a decent price, check out Martin. Trust me--you will not be disappointed. -

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Aubrie. I love her so much that I sought her out to this new location. I love her so much that even though I'm moving to SF this weekend, I really and truly am considering flying back up here every few months to get my cut from her.
Honestly, my cut isn't hard. Trim my hair a few inches, re-layer, and give me side swoopy bangs. Pretty conservative and simple. Here's the thing though....I've been to other stylists in the past and had the same request and it's NEVER turned out this good. It's always been nice, but I've never been as complimented and asked who my stylist as much as when I get a cut from Aubrie. Seriously, the day I got my cut I had 5 friends ask for her name and number and 3 people randomly say, "I don't know what it is today, but you look amazing/pretty/gorgeous today." When I say, "oh I got a haircut today" I immediately get "damn, that's an amazing haircut. Wait...I'm not sure what to think about those compliments now. Anyhow, that's how amazing Aubrie is.
I even made my boyfriend to go her after the asian bowl-cut fiasco he had at another salon. He also went to another trendy salon once, for convenience, and got a cut from a girl who made him look azn rice rocket guy (what's with these asian male hairstyle stereotypes?!!). He came home and looked at me and said, "You were right, I should have gone to Aubrie." And how often does he admit I'm right?!?! Gotta love Aubrie! -

Why not give this place five stars? Great atmosphere, good music, nice personable people and where else can you get your hair cut and feel like you're in a yellow submarine? I went for the first time yesterday and I will most definitely go back. I will also refer my friends.
The prices are reasonable and last time I went there was a dog just chillin' out. Love it! -

Betsy is awesome, warm, talented, friendly, helpful, funny, and has a sixth sense about people and their hair. I can be kind of inarticulate about what I want, but she sensed what I was getting at and gave me something even better than what I was expecting. Not only that, she was patient about explaining in simple steps how to make my hair look awesome on my own at home. I've been wearing my thin, limp hair up in ponytails for months, and for the first time today after my haircut with Betsy, I wore it down and was not the least bit self-conscious. It was a huge step. Thanks Betsy (I just almost misspelled your name "Besty"; appropriate!)

Absolutely the best salon I have been to in a long time where your not surrounded by a bunch of snooties. Love the atmosphere, while it being a very casual, hip/trendy place they are at the same time very professional. Jen C chopped my good 10 inches of long thick madness and gave me a cute shot bleached cut. So much fun and even though it took hours to do I didnt get tired of talking to her.

5 stars for Radar. Not only was the place awesome but to just make it more wonderful my hair stylist Jennifer Cassady did an amazing job. She listened to me and really thought about what would be best for me in the long run. The hair color turned out amazing too!
