Amazing store, with great selection of most rare and hard to find titles, including independent and foreign films! They also have a wide selection of old TV shows (Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, Mannix, Dungeons & Dragons) for rent there, and their Blu-Ray section is great too. I'm glad that I got a rental membership there-I'll always rent from them.
Love Queen video, all of its locations. The staff is always helpful, they have a great selection of both mainstream and more obscure titles.
Why can't Queen Video migrate to San Francisco?
They have a great selection and knowledgeable staff all without the garish blue polo shirts or the in-your-face advertisements about the 2 movie rentals, 3 bags of popcorn, 2 bags of candy and a 2-Litre soda for 9.99 (God Bless America).
Interesting side story: I went to rent a movie at Queen Video and my always forgetful video buddy racked up 27 dollars in late charges. Subsequently, we paid the fee and rented our movies. Came in the next day to rent another movie (yes, we have no lives) and the guy behind the counter said that we had a late charge of 27 dollars. We told him that we paid it the day before. Acting on blind faith and our word he believed us and erased the charges. That my friends, is why I love Canada. Never in a million years would that happen in corporate America.
Queen Video is quite simply the best video store on the planet. They surely have every single movie you could ever imagine, including that obscure title your university friend told you about from his Early-Nineteenth-Century-Film-101 class.
The staff is awesome and their "pull the plastic velcro off the wall" system makes it easy to find out what they have in stock. Best of all, their prices beat any other video store out there, including http://zip.ca.
They recently started a movie podcast, too, which is awesome. You can find it at http://moviemorons.com. And lastly, no, they aren't paying me! I'm just *that* much of a Queen Video fan!
A great place for movie enthusiasts.
I was introduced to Queen Video when I first moved to town and was not used to the "take the tag from the wall" system of things. However, the amazing video collection and the outstanding rental price kept me coming back every week.
Though I dislike the fact that I had to sign up for a new card at every separate location (why are they all called Queen Video then if they all require their own memberships??) and not to mention leave behind my credit card info, I do love the store.
The staff have never been overly helpful. Yes I'm sure they have a great film repertoire seeing as they talk to each other about 'awesome' movies they watched for film school but it would be 'awesome' if they talked to each other AFTER they finished checking me out. The staff seems quite aloof.
Still, can't beat the price or the selection (in that order).
Queen Video has a great, great selection of films and a very, very knowledgeable staff. I went here to rent a bunch of seasons of The SImpsons and Seinfeld. They had pretty much every single season of both which is something you probably won't find at Blockbuster (unless, of course, you're willing to buy them).
They also had a fantastic selection of new releases, but most important a lot of great classics which are harder to come by these days. The guy at the counter also recommended some great movies and made some solid critiques on new movies that we hadn't yet seen (and now won't).
If you want to support local business and get a good bang for you buck, Queen Video is where it's at.
I'm a child of the suburbs, so the first few decades of my life were spent trying to find a decent movie to watch at the big chain video stores. When I moved downtown to go to school, the thing I was most excited about was being near a Queen Video. Now, even though I've lived downtown for almost a decade, I still want to make that "aaaa" sound (like a chorus of angels singing) every time I walk into one of their stores. Seeing a huge wall of indie movies still makes me excited, even when it's a Friday night and the selection has been seriously picked over. Not seeing an entire wall of the latest Tom Cruise flop makes me even happier.
The store uses the velcroed tag system, so sometimes its best to scan for tags rather than look at the boxes themselves if it's a busy night. I always try to keep this in mind to avoid the disappointment that quickly follows the excitement of discovering that a) a movie I really want to see is on DVD and b) some other sucker has beaten me to the punch.
I've been to three Queen Video locations downtown, but generally end up at the Queen and Cameron location the most. The selection is good at all three, but the people who work at that location are way cuter and cooler.
They have an excellent selection. If you're looking for something obscure, Queen Video is the most likely place to have it, and if they don't have it, they might just order it. It would be awesome if they catalogued their movies online, so that you could check ahead of time which location has the movie you're looking for (they have three locations), so that you're not running around town searching.
My only problem with them is the late fees -- I'm terrible at bringing movies back on time, and overdue fines at Queen Video can get very costly. The shelves also tend to be very disorganized, so it's impossible to find something specific without an employee helping you, which they often aren't willing to do.
