A solid choice for the off beat. informative staff who love movies and aren't afraid to make recommendations without prefacing them first or offering lame caveats. In the age of the Internet and ubiquitous streaming sites and free torrents Queen Video is worth checking out as you will inevitably leave with something in hand that you didn't previously know to exist. A visit here is a must for all serious cinephiles or for those adventurous enough to expand their horizons.

Great selection for sure. But an indifferent/ too cool for school staff. If you are looking for a good selection and a staff that is passionate about movies and open to chatting about them, try Suspect Video on Markham.

Lots and lots of movies, helpful staff, and reasonable pricing. I know that I am a luddite to be renting actual, physical movies, while the rest of you are off getting your movies for free via technology, but this is what I do. And it is nice to support an independant video store.
I have had a couple of issues with renting DVDs that were too scratched to play, but I recognize that this is a problem instrinsic in the technology. They were happy to refund my money, so no complaints. I didn't get to see the second half of Dune, but I think I can imagine how it ends. -

The staff here is very helpful in locating and finding titles for you. Once, I couldn't find the location of the DVD that I wanted, and the clerk pulled the DVD from the back and rented it to me anyway. He indicated that he would find the case instead.
The only downside is that the DVD's get rented for quickly. You might have to wait a couple of days to find the title that you want. The plus side is that the clerk can put a hold on a title for you.
I love this place -

I'm a big supporter of local independent places - my main video rental store was Suspect Video, before they fell victim to the huge Queen Street fire last year. As much as I'd love to give Queen Video a good review, I always find myself feeling frustrated when I go to rent anything from them.
Ok...
So, my roommate and I wanted to rent "Everything Is Illuminated". Not there. Then we remembered "Rocket Science" - getting excited about seeing that, we were disappointed when the velcro tab was taken. Finally, we were like "Fine. Let's rent the Bee Movie". There were 10 copies available to rent, and all were out. THE BEE MOVIE!!
It's become a really busy place to rent movies - especially since the Blockbuster right across the street has become a Sobey's. Good for them, but with the hight in popularity, they need to stock more copies of movies, because only on very rare occasions, I actually get to rent what I went there for. -

These guys and gals are so cool and their knowledge of film is astounding. I rent from Blockbuster from a sheer convenience standpoint, but I'll always try here for the special rents I require from time to time.
Also- they're pricing is way better than the big boys. -

The selection is splendid, the shop is clean and organised, the hours are great, and the employees are friendly. I love this place!

While Queen video's other locations may be considered all part of the same beast, I would argue that the Bloor location is a creature all of its own. With a very steady business (so popular, in fact, some QV fans take credit for putting the Blockbuster across the street out of business) and a staff of people who know their stuff, you're always likely to find something you want here. Any given night of the week you will find this independent video store full of browsers wandering through the thousands of titles, trying to slip past each other in the crowded shelves to check if one title or another is in. If you want something obscure, ask and ye shall receive. And in the odd chance they don't have it at the Bloor location, they will obtain a copy from one of the other stores. And if in the very rare instance they don't have it at all, they will put a copy on order and let you know when it came in.
I wouldn't recommend walking in blindly and asking the staff what they recommend seeing, despite their reputation as true cinema buffs. The best thing to do is wait until you see something that you absolutely love, and then ask the staff there what they would recommend if you were looking for something in that style/vein/etc. They do indeed know what they are talking about and if it isn't too busy are more than happy to chat film with you until you find something that suits your fancy. The prices are reasonable and the length of rentals is more than fair, especially for DVD box sets or non-new releases. Just try to return it on time or you'll get one of those gentle reminder phone calls that you hijacked their only DVD copy of Pootie Tang. :) -

For a cinema buff such as myself, this is about as good as it gets. When I saw the list of auteurs on the front window, I knew I had found the right place, and years after I rented my first movie, I wasn't disappointed.
Queen Video so good in fact, that I canceled my http://zip.ca account and paid off my massive late fees to return there. Said late fees were due to a month long attempt to watch Tokyo Story (3 hours of solemn Japanese cinema needs the right mood, and I didn't find it at the time, nor the other two occasions I rented it). Luckily the fine was only about $15 (47 cents a day I think for old releases), and they gave me a discount, which has become a regular feature because of my tardy return habits.
I see complaints here about not having enough copies of certain new releases. While I can see the point that some times you are craving something particular, this logic still utimately baffles me. Have you seen even a fraction of all the great movies that have come out in the past? No, obviously not. So why are you so upset that you can't rent some semi-decent adaptation of modern fiction when there are literally hundreds, if not thousands of better movies to choose from.
Some day I hope to get a job there so I can be surrounded by fellow film snobs. Till then, I'll just continue to geek out in small talk with whoever is behind the counter about the sex scene Don't Look Now. -
