Review from Allison M.
My boyfriend and I happened in here in search of hot chocolate. The owner was sitting with his wife outside and immediately jumped up to welcome us inside. We started looking at the menu, and he started listing all of his recommendations-- but didn't even mention hot chocolate. When we remarked that we had really come in for some hot chocolate, he eagerly told us that of course he had it, but what would be really delicious would be some cocoa-chai... Hot chocolate mixed into a chai latte. And my sweet bowen island, was he right.
He made some conversation, then left us inside to warm up (it was a chilly day that we had spent hiking), enjoy our cocoa-chai, and admire (read: question?) the New Agey pseudo-ethnic decor. There was also a leave-one, take-one bookshelf, and I think we read some antiquated film theory textbook. It was such a wonderful place to spend some time waiting for the ferry to come in down the hill! This was a couple of months ago, so I truly hope it hasn't gone out of business! -

Bowen Island, BC
Kate and Troy opened their intimate Bowen Island restaurant in late fall 2010, featuring Indian/Pakistani-inspired cooking. So-good-it's-bad-for-you Butter Chicken and spicy Dahl are featured daily, along with home-made Chai Tea, Raita, and buttery/garlic-goodness Nan, and savoury Samosas and Chutney ordered from an Indian supplier in Vancouver; two or three other curry-inspired dished are featured every day: recent dishes include Muttar Paneer (peas and Indian cheese), Palak Paneer (spinach and Indian cheese), Rajma (kidney beans and tomatoes), Pumpkin Spice (with nutmeg, cinnamon, and coconut milk), Channa Masala (chickpeas and tomatoes), Asian-influenced cous-cous, and Biryani (savory rice, sometimes with chicken); other meat dishes include Moroccan Beef and Lamb/Chicken/Beef Vindaloo; eclectic vegetables, including purple cabbage, often inspire other dishes. Over the months I've sampled almost all of the offerings, every one a fierce delight (and some more fierce than others - last week's Rajma and this week's Rajma, for example, are seldom identical, just delish in different ways, and the level of spiciness varies from pot to pot). Teas, soft drinks, fruit juices and coffee from the Bowen Island Roasting Company are on tap. Maybe soothing Lassi when spring comes? Please? Inside seating is limited to a table for 4-6 and 10 or so counter seats, but warmer weather will open up outside seating. A lot of the business is takeout - I've been there when people call from the ferry leaving Horseshoe Bay for Bowen to place an order. And, just as good as the food is for the body, the happy, calming energy of the space, and of Kate and Troy, is nourishment for the soul.
Open currently Wed-Sat 11-8, Sun 12-7, cheques or cash only for now, the table can be booked for a party of four to six. Prices are more than reasonable, but the Qi for Two - two of every day's offerings, substitutions okay - is more than enough for two adults, at $22.22. Yummers...
